Notes: Gary qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.51. Unfortunately, he fouled against Don Garlits in the first round. Garlits, in his not-yet-updated '81 car, got Beck to red-light by hitting the throttle before the green. He again qualified #1 at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 5.47 (Low ET) at 250.69 gave him the spot. A 5.53/249.30 advanced in the first round, when Gene Snow broke. In round two, he beat Dick LaHaie with a 5.55/251.39. In the semifinals, he raced his boss, Larry Minor, and Beck's 5.62/249.30 won over Minor's 5.99/220. This set up a final between him and Joe Amato, who had recorded the first 260 mph run in his semifinal race. Joe got the win with a 5.54/262 over Beck's runner-up effort of 5.68/245.90. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Gary slipped to #3 in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 5.60/253.52. A blown engine finished him in the first round. The Larry Minor team showed at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. Beck ran 5.48/259.36 to qualify first. An improved 5.45/261.62 beat Butch Blair, while in round two, he set Low ET with a 5.41/261.62 that beat Danny Danell. In the semifinals, he also set Top Speed with a 5.53/262.39 that beat Denver Schutz. In the final, he ran his boss. Gary took the victory with a 5.49/253.52 over Larry's 5.67/256. Back on the NHRA tour for the Cajun Nationals. Beck ran 5.60/252.10 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He beat LaHaie in the first round, with a 5.64/253.52 while a 5.53/259.36 advanced in the semifinals when Amato broke a rear end. Once again, Gary had to run his boss, this time for an NHRA victory. Beck got another win with a 5.69/252.10 over Minor at 5.91/246. His next win came at NHRA's next race, the Springnationals. There he qualified #1 at 5.52/257.14 and in the first round, he ran a solo 5.63/255.68. In the second round, Connie Kalitta fouled, and Beck advanced with a 5.69/245.23. He soloed again in the semifinals after Doug Kerhulas could not show after crashing into the catch net in his second-round race. Gary ran 5.49 (Low ET) at 258.62 to advance. In the final, he was up against Amato. Gary got the win with a 5.54/257.14 over Joe's 5.70/243. He kept racking up the wins when he won the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 5.57/259.36 and beat Danell in the first round, and LaHaie in the semifinals to meet Minor in the final. Gary won the event with a final round 5.76/239.36 over Larry's 6.45/144.00. This was Beck's 18th win in NHRA National Events. The NHRA Summernationals marked a low point in Top Fuel racing when only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Beck ran 5.52 to qualify #2. He lasted until the semifinals, where he fouled against eventual winner Frank Bradley. The next stop on the NHRA schedule was at Denver for the Mile High Nationals. Gary set a track record 5.51 in qualifying #1, but in the first round, he lost to Kalitta, who would go on to win. He again qualified #1 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd with a 5.56/257.14, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Gary Ormsby. The NHRA US Nationals at Indy was not a good showing for Beck. Sure he qualified #1 with a 5.51/251.39, but in the first round, a camshaft broke, and the car showed to a 6.59/134 loss to Minor's 6.45/162. |

Notes: Chris started the '84 season at the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.05 qualified #6, and in the first round, he ran a 5.90/205 that lost to Frank Bradley's slower 5.96. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the sixth alternate with a 5.917/229.59. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he had help from Sid Waterman and Ron Capps. His first qualifying pass was a 6.01. That was followed by a career-best 5.74. The third run produced a 5.75. Finally, a 5.655/249.30 qualified #8 and an opening-round 5.846/240.64 advanced when Jack Ostrander shut off. In round two, Gary Ormsby's 5.65/249 beat "The Greek's" 5.801/243.90. Still, the "Greek" moved into the tenth spot in the NHRA TF points standings with this showing. Chris qualified #10 at NHRA Columbus at 5.770/238.09. In round one, he beat Frank Bradley, 5.867/193.95 to 6.00/211, but shut off to an 11-second run, losing to Doug Kerhulas in round two. Chris qualified #8 at NHRA Englishtown at 5.698/241.28 but lost a close race to Gary Beck in round one, 5.61/251 to 5.688/240.64. Chris ran 238 at ADRA West Salem, OH, on July 22. He lost to Dick Lahaie in the first round. At Spokane on August 19, his 5.53/238.72 qualified second to Don Garlits for the ADRA World Finals. He then beat Arley Langlo and Frank Bradley to meet with Garlits in the final. In the final, Chris' 5.52/255.69 snagged the victory over Don's 5.63/254. He qualified #7 at Indy at 5.654/244.56 but fell off to a 6.366/240.00 that lost to Howard Haight's 5.81/226 in round one. That was the Greek's final NHRA national event of the year. At the end of September, he was at Acadiana International Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 5.84 qualified #4. George Tolon's 6.56 in the first round fell to the "Greek's" 5.92/243.24. In the semi-final, his 5.96/240.64 defeated LaHaie's 6.18/215. Once again, he faced Garlits in the final, but this time the finish was reversed when "Big Daddy"s 5.56/256 got the win over Karamesines' 5.71/243.24. His best NHRA times were 5.654/249.30. |

Notes: Bradley started his season at Tucson in mid-January for the AHRA Winternationals. His 5.95 qualified second to Jerry Ruth's 5.88. In the opening round, his 5.96 beat Chris Karamesines' late 5.90. In the semi-final, he lost to Gene Snow. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, Frank's 5.73/250.69 qualified #10. In the first round, Larry Minor's 5.40/248 defeated his 6.01/221.12. He did not compete at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals or Atlanta and Baton Rouge. He was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. The AHRA shows were all eight-car fields at this time, and he qualified #5 at 6.10/233. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ruth. Bradley improved to 6.00/238 to upset Ruth's 6.07/225. In the semi-final, he lost to eventual winner Don Garlits' 5.94/236, which beat his off-pace,6.21/221. Shortly after that, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A great 5.64/242.24 qualified #3. But he slowed to 6.00/211.76 in round one and lost to Karamesines' 5.86/193. He then went to St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4, and in round one, his 5.95/238 took out Dale Wilch's 6.25/218. He then set Low ET in the semi-final with a 5.76/236 over Dick Lahaie's 5.92/240. He faced Snow in the final, and Bradley smoked the tires to 6.02/231.37 in a runner-up finish to Gene's 5.89/240. He did not compete at the NHRA Grandnationals, but on July 8, he won the AHRA Grand American at US 30, Gary, Indiana. Three cars had qualified at 5.57, and Bradley's was good for the #3 spot on the qualifying chart. In the first round, his 5.58/252.39 beat Jack Ostrander. Karamesines fouled against him in the semi-final, and Bradley stormed to 5.53/255.31. The ET was a new AHRA record. He went up against Garlits in the final, and Frank was more than up to the task, as his 5.60/254.59 got the victory over Garlis' 6.13/175. The following week, he won again, taking the top honors at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Once again, he ran 5.57 (at 252.32) to qualify #3. He made only one qualifying run as only 12 cars had shown for what was supposed to be a 16-car field. He then took out Snow in round one with a 5.52, and in round two, his 5.66 beat Gary Ormsby's quicker 5.62. Gary Beck fouled against him in the semi-finals, and Bradley advanced with a 5.62. He faced low qualifier Joe Amato in the final, and Joe was the favorite to win based on performance. Bradley's car was the only one in the field running a Milodon engine and a conventional Spring-type clutch. But the two had a great race that came down to the wire, with Frank's 5.569/251.39 stealing the win from Amato's 5.57/249. The week after (July 22), he continued to show that he was for real. He was at West Salem's Dragway 42 for the ADRA Grandnationals. Only six cars had shown, and he qualified #3 at 5.6. He beat Ostrander in the first round before setting Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-finals at 5.62/253.52. Unfortunately, he was late off the line and, despite running so well, lost to Snow's 5.73/241. His next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #7 for the eight-car field with a 5.77/237.46. In the semi-final, he beat Ormsby in round one before losing to eventual winner Connie Kalitta. In August, he was at Spokane for the ADRA World Finals. He lasted until the semi-final before losing to Karamesines. There were 24 TF cars at Indy attempting to qualify. Bradley managed to qualify #8 with a 5.65/250.69. In round one, he beat alternate Grant Stoms. In the second round, his 5.89 fell to Kalitta's 5.72. Frank's best NHRA times of the year were at the Summernationals at 5.569/254.95. Frank had a good NHRA season, but those were his best times and finish. Only six cars showed at the ADRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42, OH, Bradley qualifying 3rd at 5.70/246. In semis, lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 5.73/241 holeshot despite setting Low ET and Top Speed of Meet with a losing 5.67/253.52. |

Notes: Danny was way down the list of non-qualifiers at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he did much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It helped that only 16 cars showed for the field, so there were no non-qualifiers. But still, he ripped off a 5.81/241.28 to qualify #13. That was quicker than Don Garlits, who followed him with a 5.85. Unfortunately, in the opening round, Danell slowed to 6.11/230.17 and lost to Dick Lahaie's 5.73/241. In April, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field and went out in round one, where his slowing 6.77 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.70. He then returned to Bakersfield, hoping for a repeat as he had won the race in '83. Twenty-four cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.83 qualified #5. He improved to 5.75/243 in the first round, beating Garlits' quicker-but-later 5.73/244. He improved just a little more in the second round to 5.73/245, but it was no match for eventual winner Gary Beck who ran 5.41/261 in the other lane. Near the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.69/243.24 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In round one, Joe Amato's 5.65/257 defeated his 5.79/244. Columbus also suffered from a lack of TF entries for the NHRA Springnationals. Only 15 cars showed. Danny ran 5.72/240.64 to qualify #6. In the opening round, the car lost fire on the line against Bob Simmons. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran 5.75/249.30 to qualify #6. He lost to eventual winner Beck in round one. Only 12 cars showed at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Danell qualified #7 at 5.660/250.69. In the first round, he broke a transmission and lost to Amato's tire-smoking 7.64. Amazingly, Danny's best time of the year came at the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #2 at 5.627/247.93. He best Gene Snow in round one as both cars had issues but lost to Joe Amato in round two, 5.78/238 to 5.840/241.28. Photo from 1984 Pomona. |

Notes: Ernie ran at Pomona Winters (in another car, we think) and the Pomona Finals. He qualified #13 at the finals with a 5.773/250.69. In round one, he lost to Larry Minor, 5.53/250 to 5.802/249.30. Was this a new Al Swindahl car in 1984, or the 1982 Swindahl car? When did he stop running the 1972 SPE car? |

Notes: Snow debuted his new Former Patrick and Connell car at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 5.765/235.60 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gary Beck. The race between the two didn't materialize as Snow's car broke. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car show with a first alternate 5.770/242.58. He qualified #9 at the Englishtown Summernationals at 5.718/245.90. He lost to Frank Bradley in round one with a shutoff 10.80-63. Gene ran 5.68/246 at ADRA West Salem, OH, on 7/22/84. He qualified #6 at Denver with a 5.779/241.93, but he lost to Danny Danell in round one, 6.89/161 to 7.83/88. Gene qualified #4 at Brainerd at 5.683/239.36 but again could not move past the first round, losing to Connie Kalitta, 5.98/205 to 6.010/208.33. Gene qualified #6 at Indy with a solid 5.646/247.93. In round one, he got revenge on Danell, 5.620/243.90 to 5.82/243. A consistent 5.625/240.64 took out Joe Amato in round two. But old nemesis Connie Kalitta ended Gene's day on a holeshot in the semis, stealing a 5.791/236 to 5.790/250.00 victory. Gene's next race was the World Finals, where he qualified #12 at 5.769/244.56. He lost a close first-round match where Shannon Stuart got a .499 to .526 holeshot, and both racers ran identical 5.695 ETs (Snow at 243.90). Former Kilpatrick & Connell 5.44 car. Gene eventually sold the Swindahl car to Dan Pastorini. |

Notes: Ruth qualified #1 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals with a 5.88. He had lots of issues in the opening round against Don Garlits. Not only did Ruth blow a rear end, but he also blew his engine while Garlits went on to win the event. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 5.880/231.36 was the second alternate. Jerry reset both ends of the track record at Tulsa in qualifying #1 for the AHRA Springnationals with a 5.60/249.30. In the opening round, he slowed to 6.07/225 and lost to Frank Bradley's 6.00/238. Pomona was Jerry's only NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Denver ran one NHRA national event in 1984, qualifying #8 at the World Finals at 5.701/249.30. He beat Ralph Pearson in round one, with a 12-second shutoff after Pearson lost fire. Shannon Stuart defeated Denver in round two, 5.69/250 to 5.957/243.90. Assuming Denver was in the Raisin Express, but that needs confirmation. Former Jim Bernard Northwind. |

Notes: Won Division 7. Doug qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.78. He lost to Shannon Stuart in the first round. He didn't go to Gainesville or Atlanta, but he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet run on May 13. He qualified #4 with a 5.76 and beat Dennis Taylor in the first round. Doug got a round two solo when Howard Haight ran out of parts and was unable to run. In the semifinals, he lost to Larry Minor's 5.51. Doug ended his career as a Top Fuel driver at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals on June 10. He qualified #7 with a 5.72/234.98 and in round one, he advanced with a 5.90/240.64 when Al McFayden broke. In the second round, his life was changed when he ran a 5.76/247.25 in beating Chris Karamesines, but he was unable to bring the car to a stop at National Trail's short shut down area. Kerhulas crashed into the safety net hard. He suffered serious head injuries and ended up being in a coma for ten days. |

Notes: Kalitta started his '84 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event held at Firebird Raceway. His 5.62/233.76 beat Gene Snow in the final. Scott qualified #7 at NHRA Pomona at 5.691/236.84. He lost to Chuck Haase in round one, 5.81/244 to 6.978/122.95. Scott began campaigning a funny car and did not run any other races in Top Fuel on the NHRA circuit this year. | This photo is of the TF final round @ GVRC Sunday, 2/19/84. Gene Snow, driving his old '81 ACI car, is on a decent pass of 5.66 @ 245.90. Scott Kalitta is blasting out a 5.56 @ only 221.13 to crush Snow. Scott's 5.56 and the 5.52 @ 222.77 run the previous evening were the quickest runs I ever saw @ Green Valley. - Jack Muller |

Notes: Bruce raced at the Winternationals and the Mile High Nationals this year. At Pomona, his 6.180/206.89 missed the field. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.878/244.56. He gave Joe Amato a scare in round one. Bruce got a solid holeshot and ran a decent 5.958/239.36. Amato was just able to come around him on the top end with a 5.904/241.28, a margin of .005 seconds (about 1.75 feet)! |

Notes: With IHRA dropping Top Fuel for '84, Ostrander had a lot fewer races to run. Only sixteen cars showed up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Jack qualified lat with a 6.413/196.50. He shut off against Chris Karamesines in the opening round of eliminations. He went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field; his best of 6.008/228.42 was the third alternate. He competed at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he qualified #6 and lost to Dick Lahaie in the opening round. Jack ran 6.42/231 at ADRA Dragway 42 in August. He was the second alternate at Indy with a 5.882/244.56. We formerly listed a 5.61 best for Jack this year. Did he run that in ADRA competition? Photo from 1984. |
