Notes: West ran a 6.61 to qualify #7 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. An off-pace 7.06 in the first round, lost to Dick LaHaie. The team then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a best of 6.065/222.77 left them outside the field as the sixth alternate. Where did the team run 230.76 mph? | The motor belonged to Johnny West and was pulled out of the funny car when they had made enough match race money to go big show racing with the dragster! - Johnny West, Draglist LIVE, 2/3/20

Notes: Last time we ran the car was in '82 at the Pomona Winternationals and Bakersfield March Meet. Did not qualify for Pomona and I really don't remember if we qualified at Bakersfield or not. Man, that was a long time ago, Bill. Sold everything afterwards. however, it was very exciting to compete for the few years that we were involved. Costs a lot more to run than the BB/FC that I had prior. Way more fun though. - Ron Meredith | The team was the eighth alternate at Pomona at 6.098/229.00. However, Ron's memory forgot that they came back out for the World Finals at Orange County. They were the sixth alternate there at 6.20 (speed unavailable).

Notes: Butch qualified #12 at Bakersfield with a 6.07. This was his first attempt in running TF. He beat Jeb Allen in the opening round, but an off-pace 6.68/09.79 in round two lost to the eventual winner Lucille Lee's 5.86/238. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he was the first alternate at 6.402/216.86 but he got into the show. In the first round, the car failed to fire in his match against Dwight Salisbury. That was Butch's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Baxter had one of 16 Top Fuel cars at St. Louis attempting to qualify for the eight-car field for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Unfortunately, he ended up as the sixth alternate for the show. By 1982, the days of the Chevy-powered Top Fuel cars were numbered. The only place they could qualify had been AHRA events. But now, even that was too tough. What class did Baxter race in 83/84?

Notes: Malone 81/84. | Don started the '81 season by winning the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.33/230 over Jerry Ruth. He then showed up at the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington and qualified #2 with a 5.92/243, but the car started wheelstanding against Richard Tharp in the first round, and Don's 6.03/250.69 (Top Speed) lost to Tharp's 5.95/237.

Notes: Won 1981 AHRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, becoming the first and only woman to do so. Also won Bakersfield March Meet, becoming the first and only woman to do so. | Shirley started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals, where she qualified #5. In the first round, a 6.37/218 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.35/218. She then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 40 Top Fuel cars tried to get into the sixteen-car field. A 5.84 qualified #3 and a first-round 5.92/241 beat Frank Bradley (5.94/241). In the second round, a 600-foot wheelstand cost her the race against Marvin Graham. It was on to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet that, as mentioned above, she won. Shirley ran a 5.91/243.90 to qualify #3 again, and a first-round 5.96 beat her former partner Connie Kalitta in the first round. In round two, a 5.94/240.64 dispatched Mark Prudhomme's 6.19/213. In the semifinal, she met Jerry Ruth, and a 5.84 (Low ET) got her into the finals. A 5.92/245.90 (Top Speed) won the event over Doug Kerhulas. She backed that win up with another win a week later at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Shirley qualified #4 with a 5.76/247.93. A first-round 5.80/241.28 beat Mark Oswald and a second-round 5.74/250.00 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, a 5.79/244.56 took out Dave Settles. In the final, she met strong competition in the form of Jody Smart. It was a good race, but Shirley's 5.81/247.25 prevailed over Smart's 5.89/245. On April 5, she ran at the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley, where a 6.03/225.56 qualified #1. She met Smart again in the first round, and a 6.10/222.77 beat his tire-smoking 6.38/233. Unfortunately, it was her turn to smoke the hides in the semifinal against Gene Snow. On April 26, she was running in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.83 qualified her #4 in the eight-car field. A 5.89/238.72 beat Kerhulas' 5.91/240 in the first round, and a 5.97/236 beat Jeb Allen's 6.00/241 in the semis. Another win came her way in the final when Muldowney's 5.95/239.36 beat Terry Capp's quicker 5.91/238. On May 3, she took another win at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. She qualified #3 and beat Don Garlits in the semifinal before beating Chris Karamesines in the final. Another win came on May 17 at Cayuga Dragway Park in Canada for an NHRA Eastern Regional. There, she set Top Speed at 239.36 before running a 6.21/231.36 in the final over Kerry Sweigart's 6.29/225. Shirley skipped over the following two NHRA events, not going to either the Cajun Nats or the Mile High meet in Denver. Early June found Shirley racing at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.10/236.85 qualified #2. A first-round 6.19/229.60 took care of Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car, and in the semifinal, a 6.24/234.99 beat Fred Snavely. In the final, she faced #1 qualifier Garlits. Garlits ran the track's first five in the final, a 5.99/237.47 to win over her 6.23/203. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, a 5.90/214.28 qualified #4. A first-round 5.92/243 beat Marvin Graham, but David Pace beat her in the semifinal with a 5.92. Shirley tried hard setting Top Speed at 244.56. She won the AHRA Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, setting Low ET at 5.84 in the final while beating Garlits. In July, at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the combination just wasn't there. She lost two engines in qualifying before making the field with a 5.86/238.72 (#11). She then wounded another engine in her first-round loss to Smart. At the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals, a 5.97/243.24 left her outside the eight-car field (#4 alternate). In August, Shirley competed at the AHRA Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway. She qualified #4 and beat Karamesines in the first round, with a 6.05/243. She got a free ride into the final when Joanne Reynolds broke. In the final, she met Ruth, who laid down a 5.90 (Low ET) at 236 to beat her 6.03/231. It was the same outcome at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Ruth stopped Muldowney again in the finals with a 5.74/238, beating her 5.89/202. Times were way low at this meet due to questionable clocks at Spokane. She had Top Speed at the US Nationals, qualifying #8 with a 5.74 and another 5.74 in the first round, beat Oswald (5.84), but she lost in the second round.

Notes: Ruth started the season at the AHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/234 but lost to Don Garlits in the final. He qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, hitting 5.80 for the top spot and a first-round 5.85/243 that beat Gene Snow. In the second round, a 5.95/240 lost to Richard Tharp's 5.83/243. On March 8, he went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 5.96/234.98 qualified #5. He beat Gary Beck in the first round, with a 6.00/225.56, and when Dennis Baca lost fire in round two, he singled with a 5.92/221.67 into the semifinal. Unfortunately, paired against Shirley Muldowney, he smoked the tires to an 8.35 and lost to her 5.84 Low ET blast. In July, he ran a best of 6.16/230.17 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, which was good for the #3 alternate. On August 16, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.91 and in the first round, a 6.03/228 beat Junior Kaiser. In the semifinal, the "King" met the "King," Ruth beat Garlits with a slower 6.02/228 to Don's 6.00/245. In the final, he met the "Queen" as he faced off against Shirley. It took a new track record 5.90 at 236 to win over her 6.03/231. He faced her in the final again the following week at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He set a new AHRA ET record of 5.57 in qualifying and ran 5.82/237 over Chris Karamesines and 5.98/219 in the semifinal over a fouling Garlits. In the final, Ruth's 5.74/238 beat Shirley's 5.89. He qualified #4 with a 5.72 at the NHRA US Nationals, but as mentioned above, he lost the quickest side-by-side race ever in the first round, when Connie Kalitta's 5.74 beat his 5.77. Garlits got one back from Ruth at the AHRA Autumn Nationals at Seattle. The two met in the finals, and Don's 5.97 beat Jerry's close 5.89 for the title. In October, Ruth ran at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. There, a 5.85/233.16 qualified #11. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.95/222.77 wasn't good enough to get around Jeb Allen's 5.73/244.56. He qualified much better at the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.74/238.09 notched the #4 spot. A better 5.72/242.58 beat Kalitta (5.83/236) in the first round, but in round two, a sleepy 6.09 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 6.11.

Notes: Jeb's 5.628 at Gainesville was not backed up but was the first time someone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' 5.637 from Ontario 1975. Received a 254.01 mph national record at Bandimere because NHRA was still factoring times for the mile-high race plant. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. Jeb's 250.69 at Gainesville was the 7th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Jeb won the 1981 NHRA Championship by 31 points over Gary Beck. | Jeb was the only driver that qualified for every NHRA national event in '81. He had switched to a 10-71 supercharger with a larger fuel pump and a hotter magneto for the season. His season started at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing, where he won Top Fuel with a 5.86. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.86/246.57. A 5.87/245 beat Tony Ceraolo in round one, and he followed that up with a 5.84/245 single in the second round when Mike Tarter was unable to run. He was winning rounds but was burning pistons on almost every run. Allen stated that with his new engine set-up, the air/fuel mixture wasn't right. In the semifinals, his 5.86 beat Dave Settles' 5.94, and he grabbed the win with a final round 5.92/229.59 that beat Marvin Graham's 6.01/236. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #6, running 5.98/241.28 for the spot. Unfortunately, rain delayed the race one week, and Allen could not run the rain date as it fell on the same date as the NHRA Gatornationals (March 15). Jeb made quite a splash at Gainesville as he ran a 5.62/250.69 to qualify first. The 5.62 was the first time anyone had gone quicker than Don Garlits' historic 5.63 from '75. He failed to back up the time for a new NHRA record as in the first round, his 5.80/248.61 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.79/243. The following week he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals but rain-interrupted again, and the race was postponed one week until March 28. He qualified #3 with a 5.97/242 and a first-round 6.04/231 beat alternate Paul Romine's 6.20/223. In the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.39/209 that lost to Jody Smart's 6.05/243. The next NHRA event was the Cajun Nationals at Atlanta. It was a tough show to make as it was only an eight-car field. Jeb ran 5.86/236.84 to qualify #6. He beat Graham in the first round, with a 5.92/236.84, but a 6.00/241 in the semifinals lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.97/236. It was then off to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Allen qualified #3 with a 5.83 and a first-round 5.85/249.30 (Top Speed of the meet) beat Connie Kalitta. In the semifinals, he ran a good 5.89, but he finished behind Graham's even better 5.82. Another big win came at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.86/252.10 (Top Speed). His 6.00/247.93 beat Mike Tarter in the first round, while a 5.92 in the semifinals beat Mark Oswald. In the final, he ran Richard Tharp in the "Candies & Hughes" car. Tharp smoked the tires, and Allen ran 5.99/248.61 for the victory. A week later (May 24), he was back in the winner's circle at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Dragway. There he qualified #2 with a 5.87 and a first-round 5.99 beat a tire-smoking Graham. Tharp also smoked the tires against him in the semifinals, and Jeb's 6.02/243.90 advanced into the final. There he ran Terry Capp, and both had traction issues with Allen's 6.11/233.16 coming out on top over Capp's 7.15. Things didn't go as well at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.93/243.90 in qualifying placed him #7 in the field, but in the first round, his car broke, giving Jim Head an easy run into the second round. After that, it was off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.93 at a track record speed of 244.56. A first-round 5.95/242.58 beat Capp, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.92 at 243.24 to beat Johnny Abbott's 5.96/238. He faced David Pace driving the "Carroll Brothers" car in the final, and a 5.94/243.24 got Jeb another victory.

Notes: Gary was at Sacramento late in June for the NHRA Western Regional race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.88/235.61. In the opening round of eliminations, his off pace 6.38/197.81 fell to Jim Murphy's 6.18/231. The teams' 5.793/250.69 was the quickest DNQ in history at Indy. The speed made him the 8th member of the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. They were the second alternate at the Golden Gate Nationals at 5.938/233.16. Those were Gary's only two NHRA national events of the year.

Notes: 1981 was also a very good year for Marvin during which he again won the NHRA Grand Nationals, and won the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, the IHRA season finals race, the Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Medford, Oregon, points races, and was runner-up at the NHRA Pomona Winternationals and Golden Gate Nationals. Marvin finished fourth in the NHRA points championship. he ran 250.00 (in 5.633 seconds) at Fremont on October 4, 1981, to become the 12th entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. The team was always among the quickest and fastest cars at each event. | At the season-opening NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, only two cars qualified that did not run a five-second time. Graham was one of them, qualifying #15 for the show with a 6.01/240.64. A first-round 6.08 beat an off-pace Gary Beck (6.43) in the first round, and in round two, he improved to 5.92/243.90 to beat a wheelstanding Shirley Muldowney. In the semifinals, his 5.96 beat Richard Tharp's 6.03 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. This set up a final-round meeting with Jeb Allen. Allen had been running steady 5.8s, but he had been burning a lot of pistons doing it. In the final, Marvin's 6.01/236.22 finished second best to Allen's slowest run of eliminations, a 5.92/229. Still, it was a good run for Graham considering he almost didn't qualify. The Bakersfield March Meet was his next stop where he qualified #10 with a 6.03/226.70. He surprised #2 qualifier, Terry Capp, in the first round, when he beat him with a 5.95/240.00. In round two, Marvin improved to 5.87/242.58 while beating John Kimble. But at the top end, a wing strut came loose and the wing flew off the car. The dragster unloaded and the rear wheels spun, causing the rear end to blow. This kept Graham from running Doug Kerhulas in the semifinals. The following week (March 15), he was in Florida for NHRA Gatornationals. He used a 5.744/246.57 to qualify #2 behind Allen's 5.62. But an off-pace 6.25/201.79 in the first round, lost to Dave Settles' 6.02/216. It was then off to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the eight-car field with a 6.15/222 which placed him on the "bump." But after qualifying, it rained and the meet was postponed a week. Marvin was unable to return for the rain date on March 28. On April 5, he was competing at the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley Raceway. A 6.28/222.22 qualified #4 in the eight-car show and in round one, his tire-smoking 6.78/226.70 beat Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car at 7.09/199. Graham smoked the tires again in the semifinals and lost to Beck. Atlanta was Marvin's next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was a tough eight-car field to break into, taking a 5.87 just to qualify. Graham's 5.82 qualified #2, but he lost to Allen in the first round. He got a victory at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships on May 3. His 5.81/238.72 qualified #1, and he beat Bobby Hilton in the first round, with a 5.79/239.36. In the semifinals, his 5.82 stopped Allen's 5.89, putting him into the final against the upstart, Mark Oswald. It was a close race that saw Marvin win with a 5.84/238.09 over Mark's 5.85/246. Yet after that victory, he failed to qualify a week later (May 9) at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional where his 6.22 was the first alternate for the eight-car show. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified on the pole with a 5.77 (Low ET) at 237. The run came at a cost as he hurt some parts and was unable to run in eliminations. Marvin's best NHRA national event times came at Fremont, where he ran the great 5.633/250.00 in eliminations.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1981. | Tharp started the '81 season by qualifying #13 with a 5.97/236.84 at the NHRA Winternationals. Despite the relatively poor starting position, Richard picked up to a first-round 5.78 (Low ET) at 245 over Gary Cornwall's 5.92/238. A second round 5.83/243 beat low qualifier Jerry Ruth's 5.95/240. Tharp slipped to a 6.03 in the semifinal that lost to Marvin Graham's 5.96. At the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, on March 15, Richard's 5.82/240.64 qualified #7. A first-round 5.91/243.24 beat Terry Capp, but Jody Smart's 5.87/245 beat his 5.91/243.90 in round two. The following week (March 22), the Candies and Hughes team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.03/230 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. Tharp picked up to a 5.95/237 in the first round, to beat a wheelstanding Don Garlits. In the semifinal, a 5.97/232 beat Dick LaHaie and in the final, he soloed to the victory when Smart's car broke on the line. Tharp was definitely not happy when their best of 5.97 failed to qualify for the eight-car show in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 17, Tharp was runner-up to Jeb Allen at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.85 and a first-round 6.06 beat alternate Richard Holcomb. He ran another 6.06 in the semifinals to beat Butch Osmon's quicker 6.01 in the Jim and Allison Lee car. But in the final, a tire smoking 11.91/53.41 lost to Allen's 5.99/248. It was strange to see the Candies and Hughes fueler on the bump, but that's where they were at State Capitol Dragway for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24. A 5.97/245.90 got them the #8 spot in the eight-car field. Tharp's 6.01 in the first round, advanced when Gary Beck fouled. But in round two, a tire smoking 6.27/231.36 lost to Allen's 6.02/243. Things were worse at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals when Tharp's best of 6.07/232.55 was good for the fifth alternate. There was a bit of irony in the team's next win. It came at the IHRA Northern Nationals and Tharp beat Mark Oswald for the title. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in July, Richard ran a 5.94/241.28 to qualify #2. Unfortunately, Doug Kerhulas stepped up to a 5.99 in the first round, to beat Tharp's 6.03. The Candies and Hughes team always ran well at the NHRA Summernationals and in '81 they stayed true go qualifying #2 with a 5.76/246.57. A first-round 5.86/246.57 beat Frank Bradley, but in round two, Oswald (that name again) beat Tharp's 5.92/243 with a 5.90/243. Richard was running some big speeds at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. During qualifying, he set Top Speed at 249.30. He beat Connie Kalitta's 6.03/231 in the first round, with a 5.83/247.93. In the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires to a 6.05/245.90 loss to Beck's 5.83/236. The team looked like they were on their way to a win at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 5.88/242.58 only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.04/243.90 beat Kalitta. In the semifinals, Tharp set track records of 5.74/250.00 on a solo pass when Johnny Abbott couldn't show. But in the final, his KB engine threw a blower belt, giving Marvin Graham an easy 7.08 pass for the win.

Notes: Photo from 81 US Nationals. 250.00 run at Indy on September. 6, 1981, was the 9th entry into the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. Confirmed 5.947 from Gainesville 3/81. | Failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals, but rebounded nicely by qualifying #2 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet with a 5.90/237.46. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Marvin Graham's 5.95/240. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where a 5.94/226.13 qualified #15, but in the first round, Richard Tharp's 5.91 beat Terry's off pace 6.66/161.29. At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals on April 26, a 5.84 qualified #5. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.99/220.04 when low qualifier Mike Tarter fouled. In the semifinal, Jody Smart broke and Terry advanced to the final with a 6.01/234.98. In the final, he ran a quicker 5.91/238.72, but lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.95/239.36. He followed that finish with another runner-up spot at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals on May 24. There, he qualified #3 with a 5.88 and ran a 6.09 in the first round, to get past a blower-popping Tony Ceraolo. In the semi's, a 6.06 beat Smart's 6.11. But in the finals, Capp had problems and slowed to a 7.15 and Jeb Allen won with a 6.11/233. He made another good showing at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #5 with a 5.92/239.99 and beat Connie Kalitta in the first round, with a 5.98/219. In round two another 5.98/238 beat Mark Oswald (6.02/239). But in the semifinal, Gary Beck stopped him with a 6.11/220. He ran at the NHRA Mile High Nationals on July 4 where he qualified #5 with a 6.03/238.72, but he lost to Allen in the first round. AT the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.86/239.99. A first-round 6.03/233.76 advanced when Kalitta fouled. A second round 6.02/233.76 got past a tire-smoking Graham, but in the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires to a 15.52/50.30 loss to Mark Oswald's 5.99/238. In August, he ran in Canada at the NHRA Grandnationals at Sanair, but a best of 5.95/237.46 left him outside (#3 alternate) in the qualified eight-car field. Terry made up for not making the show at the next NHRA event, the US Nationals. There 46 cars tried for the sixteen-car field and he qualified #5 with a 5.72 and made it all the way to the semifinals where despite a quicker 5.80 he lost to eventual winner Johnny Abbott's 5.84. It was then on to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. Another great run of 5.73/230.17 qualified #5. He beat Lucille Lee's 6.40 in the first round, with a 5.88/235.60, but in the second round, a 5.83 by Tharp ended Capp's chance for the win. He went to OCIR with high hopes for the final race of the season the NHRA World Finals. A disappointing 5.91/234.98 left him out of the show and was #3 alternate.

Notes: David qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.940/230.17. He beat Mike Tarter in the first round, with a 6.085/229.59, but in round two, his 6.273/216.86 lost to Dave Settles' 5.89/225. He failed to qualify (first alternate) for the eight-car field at the NHRA Western Regional at Green Valley, but he got in when Keith Craig was unable to run. Pace faced Gary Beck in the first round, but his tire-smoking 6.64/224.43 lost to Beck's 6.21/219. In May, at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, David set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.800/247.93. In the first round, he slowed to 6.16/233.16 and lost to Jody Smart's 5.91/243. David qualified #8 at the Springnationals with a 5.936/243.24 and beat Jim Barnard in round one, 6.134/236.84 to 6.19/231. He set Top Speed of the Meet at 5.921/247.93 over Shirley Muldowney's close, holeshot-aided 5.964/244.56 (.001 seconds margin of victory - about four INCHES at the stripe)! In round three, David slowed to a 6.331/212.76, and Butch Osmon advanced at 6.12/209. David qualified #4 at Denver with a 6.000/237.46. He beat Rob Bruins in round one, 6.012/238.09 to 6.11/239.99, and drove around a Doug Kernulas holeshot in round two, 5.994/238.09 to a close 6.050/241.93 (.007 seconds - a little over two feet). He slipped to a 7.43 in the final, and Jeb Allen got the win at 5.94/243. David qualified #6 at Indy with his best ET of the year, 5.731/246.57. In round one, he beat a fouling Frank Bradley, coasting to a 9.51. In round two, he blasted a 5.887/250.00 to beat Dwight Salisbury at 6.20/176. David's 250.00 run at Indy on September 7, 1981, was the 11th entry in the NHRA 250 MPH Club for Top Fuel. He beat Connie Kalitta in the semis, 6.59/145, when Connie could not fire. In the final, he fouled and coasted to a 7.67, while winner Johnny Abbott also coasted through to a 10-second win. David qualified #5 at the World Final at Orange County with a nice 5.747/246.57. However, Shirley Muldowney surprised him with a holeshot and a better ET in round one, taking a 5.88/243 to 5.901/236.22 victory. AKA The Texas Whips. Photo from Gainesville 1981.
