Notes: Smart qualified #10 at the NHRA Winternationals at 5.945/243.90. A first-round 5.99/210 lost to Dave Settles' 5.90/242.58. At the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, a career-best of 5.749/247.25, qualified #3. In the first round, a 5.814/245.23 just nipped Dick LaHaie's 5.92/234. In the second round, he upset Richard Tharp with a 5.875/245.90, beating the Candies and Hughes driver's 5.91/243. A 5.937/239.99 beat Butch Osmon's 6.01/239 in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the semifinal. In the final, he met Shirley Muldowney, and his good 5.896/245.23 still lost to the lady's 5.81/247. He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 22 and qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.92 (Low ET) at 243. A first-round 5.98/238 beat Mark Oswald (6.14/230), and in the semis, a 6.05/243 beat Jeb Allen (6.39/209). He broke in the final against Richard Tharp, resulting in another runner-up finish. In April, he raced at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional points race. A 6.80/231.36 qualified #5 in the eight-car show and a tire-smoking 6.38/233.76 loss to Muldowney in the first round, gave Smart nothing more than Top Speed of the meet. It was on to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where again he set Top Speed of the meet at 243.90 at 5.829 in qualifying #3. He got past the first-round with a 5.847/241.93 to beat Frank Bradley's 5.94/236, but he broke against Terry Capp in the semifinal. On May 3, he set Low ET at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am race. A first-round 5.77/247.25 got the mark in a win over Osmon (6.07/231). In the semifinal, a quicker 5.87/243.90 lost to Oswald's 5.92/242. He ran at Bristol on May 17 for the IHRA Springnationals, where his 5.90/245.23 just made the bump in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and could not run, allowing alternate Mike Tarter into the show. Later in May, at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field at 5.890/246.57 and beat low qualifier David Pace in the first round, with a 5.91/243.90. In the semis, he smoked the tires to a 6.11/245.23 and lost to Capp's 6.06/237. He again ran well at the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.884/242.58 qualified #2, but Osmon put him on the trailer in the first round, with a slight holeshot aided 6.124/229.9 to his 6.115/230.17. The race was a theoretical dead heat - .000 seconds! Jody qualified #3 at Englishtown with a 5.781/248.61. In round one, he beat Shirley Muldowney, 5.822/245.23 to 5.882/234.24, but lost to Gary Beck in round two, 5.80/238 to 5.945/243.24. He was the first alternate at the Molson Grandnationals at 5.919/241.93. At Indy, he set a personal best elapsed time with a #7 qualifying 5.738 at 247.25. Billy Williams upset him in round one, however, 5.89/243 to 5.956/246.57. He qualified #7 at Fremont as well, hitting 5.771/242.58. In round one, he beat Doug Kerhulas, 5.79/245.90 to 5.84/241, but broke against Jeb Allen in round two. Jody just missed the field at the NHRA World Finals. His 5.914/243.24 was the second alternate. Where did Smart run 249.30?

Also 5.872/234.37 at NHRA Fremont and 5.839/247.93 at NHRA Orange County, but her best times were at Indy, the team's first race on the NHRA trail together. I'm thinking that this car eventually became the Mitch Danekas "Adversity" that was later sold to the MOB team? - Tim Simplot

Notes: Ernie was a DNQ at the Pomona Winternatinoals. He was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. It was an eight-car show, and Ernie's best of 6.15/239.37 was good for the third alternate. Ernie ran at the NHRA World Finals, but a 5.998/240.64 was the eighth alternate. Where did Ernie run 5.879/248.61?

Notes: First in the 5.50s, but not backed up for the record. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.632. Beck started the '81 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.92. In the first round, he ran an off pace 6.43 and lost to Marvin Graham's 6.08. He then ran at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.14/225.56 qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field, and he suffered another first-round loss when he ran a 6.40/211.26 to lose against Jerry Ruth (6.00/225). The following week at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, a best of 6.08 failed to qualify for the all five-second show. In April, things got better for the team when a 6.12/203.61 qualified #2 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener at Green Valley. A first-round 6.21/219.51 beat alternate David Pace (6.64/224), and in the semifinal, a 6.27/224.43 beat a tire-smoking Graham. In the final, he met Low ET setter (6.00), Gene Snow, and a 6.29/206.42 took the win when Snow's car broke. On April 26, he again failed to qualify when his 5.93 was the first alternate at the eight-car field for the NHRA Southern Nationals. In May, he rebounded with a runner-up finish to Gary Cornwall at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #4 with a 6.09/231.95 and beat John Kimble in the first round, with a 6.30/234.37. A 6.20/240.00 beat Rob Bruins in the semifinal, but a final round at 6.40/225.00 lost to Cornwall's 6.24/236. He finally got back into the fives again at the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 24 when a 5.88 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he fouled against Richard Tharp in the first round. Another runner-up performance came at Bandimere Speedway on May 30 for another NHRA Western Regional meet. He ran 5.95/223.88 over Jim Archer (6.35/217) in the first round, and then set Low ET with a 5.93/229.59 victory over Bruin's 6.33/215 in the semifinal. In the final, another good run of 5.97/227.84 was good for runner-up as Johnny Abbott's 5.95/230 beat him to the finish. A big win followed on June 21 at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.89/234.37 and beat Bruins, Jim Head, and Terry Capp to meet Butch Osmon in the Jim and Allison Lee car in the final. Beck won easily with a 6.05/224.99 when Butch had problems and slowed to 7.56/113. Things didn't stay so rosy as at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals, on July 4. A best of 6.12/208.81 in the thin air was a non-qualifier (#1 alternate). Again things changed for the better as he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals, setting Low ET at 5.74 in his semifinal victory over Jeb Allen and beating Mark Oswald in the final, 6.02/221.13 to Mark's 6.16/236.84. At the third NHRA Eastern Regional event at Indianapolis, he qualified #4 at 6.04. A first-round 5.98/219.51 beat George Tolon's 6.08/228. Doug Kerhulas stepped up with a 5.88/236 to put Beck's 5.96/223.32 on the trailer in the semi. Then he won at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.79, advanced past a fouling Jody Smart in the first round, and beat Tharp in the semis with a 5.83/236.84. In the final, a 6.01/231.95 beat Jeb Allen's 6.30/241. On July 26, he showed up in Atlanta for an NHRA Eastern Regional race and won that too. He qualified #3 with a 6.07/210.77 and ran a first-round 5.82/237.46 over Jenks Bailey, and a semifinal 5.97/216.86 took care of Smart (6.09/230). He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 5.80/243.24 defeat of Jim Head's 6.04/234. Gary's streak of wins ended on August 9 in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.74/246.57 and beat Doug Kerhulas with a 5.89/241.28 in the first round. Unfortunately, a broken fuel line in the semifinal gave Graham a single into the finals. He qualified #1 again at Indy with a track record 5.63 at 244.56 but again failed to reach the finals. Oswald stopped Beck in the first round, at the IHRA US Open on September 13. Gary ran an off pace 6.37 to lose to Mark's 5.82/212. In October, he qualified #2 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals but was upset by Connie Kalitta in the first round. Then came the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #3 with a 5.72/226.13 and a first-round 5.73/233.76 beat Dick LaHaie (5.83/233). Round two saw Beck's 5.72/239.36 beat Lucille Lee (5.95/234), and in the semi's, a 5.77/236.84 beat Shirley Muldowney (5.97/211). In the final, Beck dropped a bombshell, his 5.57/245.23 defeated Dwight Salisbury and broke the track et record of 5.77 held by Muldowney since May of '77.

Notes: Runner up to Gary Beck at OCIR World Finals 1981. | Dwight was at Sacramento on June 27 for the NHRA Western Regional. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.92/229.60. Dwight beat Mike Palmer's 6.05/226 in the first round, with a 5.95/231.96 and a semifinal 6.03/192.31 advanced when Gary Cornwall broke a rear end. He was to face Jim Murphy in the final, but Murphy had blown his engine in the semifinals and was unable to make the final so Dwight soloed for the win with a 9.07. Dwight attempted to qualify for the eight-car show at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was the fifth alternate with a best of 6.20/230.76. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where his 6.13/223.43 was good for the sixth alternate.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. Where was the 5.72/247.93 run? | Tony qualified #12 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.95/233.16, but a 6.02 in the first round, lost to Jeb Allen's 5.87/245. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran a career-best (by two tenths) of 5.76/246.57 to qualify #5. But once again he went down in the first round, this time, the car was at fault as it was stuck in reverse giving Butch Osmon a single into the second round. Ceraolo attempted to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.91 failed to make the eight-car field. He did get a runner-up finish at the NHRA Eastern Regional in May at Englishtown when Doug Kerhulas stopped him for the money. Tony qualified #7 on May 24 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but in the first round, against Terry Capp, he pitched a blower. He was close to making the field on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. A 6.11/229.60 was good for #1 alternate. Shortly after that, he raced at Indianapolis for the NHRA Eastern Regional where his 6.10 did make (#7) the show. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.26/211.76 lost to Jim Head's 5.99/228. At the NHRA Summernationals, he again ran well, but his best of 5.99/231.36 was again #1 alternate. He traveled up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but again failed to qualify (5.99/236.22).

Notes: Hilton failed to qualify at the IHRA Winternationals but got into the show when Marvin Graham could not run. Unfortunately, in the first round, a 6.54/218 did him no good against Dick LaHaie's 6.18/224. He was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #5 and shut down against low qualifier and eventual winner Graham in the opening round. Hilton qualified #7 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals with a 5.90/247.25. He blew the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981.

Notes: Kalitta's best of 6.06/233.76 failed to qualify at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals (3rd alternate). He went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.05/235.60 qualified #11 in the field. He faced his former girlfriend Shirley Muldowney in the first round, and his tire-smoking 7.15/220.04 lost to her 5.96. A week later (March 15), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 5.832/245.90 to qualify #8. A first-round 5.848/241.28 beat Kerry Sweigert, but in the second round, Kalitta again faced off against Muldowney. And once again, the results were the same, with Shirley's 5.74/250 beating Conrad's 6.135/215.82. Kalitta was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 5.945 was good for the sixth alternate in the eight-car show. On May 3, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Kalitta qualified #7 in the eight-car show and lost to Jeb Allen's 5.85 in the first round, with a 6.20. Connie qualified #13 at Columbus with a 5.981/233.96. He lost to Terry Capp in the first round, 5.98/219 to 6.096/238.09. He qualified #7 at the Mile High Nats with a 6.06/237.46 but lost a close one to Johnny Abbott on a holeshot in round one, 6.012/235 to 6.003/236.84 (.023 seconds - about 7 feet). He qualified #4 at Englishtown with a nice 5.821/239.99. But nemesis Terry Capp upset him in round one, 6.03/233 to 6.165/229.59. Connie upped his game at the Grannadional Molson, grabbing the #2 qualifying spot at 5.770/245.23. But he got bit again in round one, as Richard Tharp took a 6.04/243 to 6.129/240.00 decision. Connie qualified #12 at Indy with a 5.762/245.23. in round one, his 5.743/246.57 victory over Jerry Ruth's 5.772/239.99 was the quickest side by side pass in drag racing history. Shirley could not show for their second-round race, and he coasted to a 7.13. But Connie lost fire against David Pace in the semis, ending his day. Connie ran 5.837/231.95 at the Golden Gate Nats to qualify #10. He upset Gary Beck in round one, 5.82/235.60 to 6.09/213, and he improved to 5.76/240.00 to take out Frank Bradley's 5.98/227 in round two. Marvin Graham beat him in the semis, however, as Connie shut off to an 8.70. At the OCIR World Finals, Connie went 5.815/235.60 to qualify #12. Jerry Ruth returned the favor from Indy by taking him out in round one, 5.72/242 to 5.834/236.22. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981.

Notes: The team took delivery of their new Don Long-built car the day before the NHRA Winternationals. They ran a best of 6.02 for the first alternate. Not bad, considering that 40 cars were going for the 16-car field. At the NHRA Gatornationals, they made the field with a 5.88/242.58 qualifying #12. Mark lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. On March 22, they were at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a 6.02/244 qualified #5. In the first round, a 6.14/230 fell to Jody Smart's 5.98/238. A 5.91 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 26, but they ran 5.82 to qualify #2 the following week at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am race. Another 5.82/241.28 beat a wheelstanding Frank Bradley in the first round. In the semifinal, a 5.92/242.58 topped Smart's quicker 5.87/243. Mark faced Marvin Graham in the final and lost a close 5.84/238 to 5.85/246.57 race. At the next IHRA event, the Springnationals at Bristol, on May 17, they again qualified #2, this time with a 5.85. A first-round 5.86 beat Don Garlits' 6.01. Unfortunately, he broke an oil line in the semifinal, smoked the tires in his own oil, and lost to Jeb Allen. Oswald got a big win at the IHRA World Nationals, beating Garlits in the final with a 5.91/245. On the NHRA side, he qualified #9 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.94/241.93. He met low qualifier Billy Williams in the first round, and Mark's 6.14/234 advanced when Williams's car broke at half-track. In the second round, a 6.02/239 lost to Terry Capp's 5.98/238. He made the finals again at the next IHRA race, the Northern Nationals, but he had to settle for runner-up when Richard Tharp beat him this time. The team didn't run at the NHRA Mile High Nationals but showed up at the Summernationals at Englishtown. A 5.83/241.28 qualified #6. He beat Butch Osmon in the first round and Tharp in the second (with a 5.90/243.90 to Tharp's 5.92/243), a 5.99/238.72 in the semifinal beat a tire-smoking Capp. The team found themselves in another final round—this time against Gary Beck. Beck had been running strong, and his final round 6.02/221.13 beat Oswald's 6.16/236.84. Back at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals, they didn't run as well as they had been. Mark qualified #7 in the eight-car field and a 6.18 in the first round, lost to Allen's 6.00. The team bypassed the NHRA Grandnationals before showing up at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Once again, they just squeaked into the field with their 5.789/245.23 getting in on the bump. A first-round 5.84 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.74. The team rebounded by reaching the final at the next IHRA event, the IHRA US Open, on September 13. A first-round 5.82/212 beat an off-pace Beck at 6.37. A 6.11 took care of a tire-smoking 6.42 from Tharp in the semifinal. In the final, a slow 6.27/228.42 lost to Graham's 5.98/240.00. The 245.23 at Indy was the team's best NHRA speed.

Notes: Frank debuted a new car that was 200 lbs lighter than his '80 car at Tucson for the opening event of '81, the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost to Jerry Ruth in the first round. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.94/241.28 but once again lost in the first round. This time, Shirley Muldowney beat him with a 5.92/241 to Frank's 5.94/241. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet and ran a 6.01/223.88 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, the race was rained out and ran the following week. Bradley was unable to stay as he had to go to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.84/245.23 qualified #9. He faced the task of meeting #1 qualifier Jeb Allen who had run an all-time best et of 5.62. Unfazed, Frank went out and ran a 5.79/243 to beat Allen's 5.80/248. It was a good race. In the second round, he slowed to a 6.04/241.93 and lost to Butch Osmon's 5.97/239. Bradley then qualified #7 in the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but due to another rain delay, he could not stay for eliminations, letting alternate Paul Romine into the show. He cracked the tough eight-car show in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.87 earned him the #7 spot in the field. People like Gary Beck, Dick LaHaie, Richard Tharp, Connie Kalitta, Osmon, Mark Oswald, among others, were outside looking in. Unfortunately, Jody Smart beat him in the first round. Frank next went to Rockingham on May 3 for the IHRA Pro-Am. He qualified #6, but the front tires wouldn't stay down in the first round, and he lost to Oswald's 5.82/241. He attempted to qualify for the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, but his best of 5.95 failed to make the show. Frank could not make the field again, this time on May 24, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The trend continued for the following two NHRA events. At the Springnationals on June 21, a 6.03/229.56 failed to get into the show. And on July 4, for the Mile High Nationals, a best of 6.23/227.27 could do no better than the seventh alternate. That all changed by the NHRA Summernationals, where a 5.86/240.64 (#10) got in easily. But a first-round 6.15/222.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 5.86/246. His next stop was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field and made it into the final by beating Don Garlits in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to Muldowney. Frank did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. At the NHRA US Nationals, a 5.78 got him into the show (#14), but he tossed a blower belt in the first round, and lost to David Pace. He ran even quicker at Fremont on October 4 when his 5.759/237.46 qualified #6 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. A first-round 5.86/237.46 beat Jim Barnard, but a 5.98/227.27 in the second round was no match for Connie Kalitta's 5.76/240. He ended the season by running a stout 5.77/231.36 to qualify #7 at the NHRA World Finals. He lost a first-round clash against Lucille Lee with her 5.95/240 beating his quicker 5.94/227.54. Photo from Indy 1981. Did Frank go 5.75 at a Division 7 event at Fremont on 4/12/81?

Notes: Karamesines was at Fremont for its East/West meet early in the year. While he didn't reach the final, he set Low ET at 5.85 in a field that included Don Garlits and Jerry Ruth. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified second behind Garlits and just ahead of Shirley Muldowney. He lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to "Big Daddy." In June, he also raced at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, but his 6.79/207.38 in the opening round fell to Fred Snavely's 6.73/192. Chris did not race at any NHRA national events this year.

In May, he won the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. He qualified #3 with a 6.06/237.46 and beat Marvin Graham in the first round with a 6.17/236.84. In the semifinal, a 6.20/236.84 (again) beat a tire-smoking Jim Murphy. Gary met Gary Beck in the final, and a 6.24/236.22 beat Beck's 6.40/225. He raced at another NHRA Western Regional meet at Sacramento on June 27. He qualified #4 at 5.97/241.94 (Top Speed). A first-round 6.19/234.98 beat Larry Sutton, but in his semifinal race against Dwight Salisbury, he broke a rear end and slowed to a 7.52/120 loss. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA US Nationals, but his 5.852/241.93 ended up as the seventh alternate. That was his last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: This was the former "Blue Max" TF car. Jim's first race in Top Fuel was at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 26. His 6.139 best fell far from making the 5.87 bump. At the NHRA Springnationals on June 21, his 5.99/236.22 qualified #15 in the field. A first-round 6.27/229 advanced when Jeb Allen broke. Gary Beck put him on the trailer in round two with a 6.09/213. In July, he raced at Indianapolis for the NHRA Eastern Regional meet. A 5.97/233.76 qualified #3, and another five, a 5.99/228.42, beat Tony Ceraolo in the first round. In the semifinal, a much-improved 5.89/233.16 dropped Johnny Abbott's 6.00/238. In the final, another good 5.92/234.37 beat Doug Kerhulas' 6.24/228 for the title. At the NHRA Summernationals, Jim qualified with his best ET of the year, a nice 5.837 at 239. In round one, he lost a close one to Johnny Abbott, 5.83 to 5.99 at 241.28, Jim's best speed of the year. On July 26, he raced at another NHRA Eastern Regional meet, this one in Atlanta. A 6.29/227.27 qualified #4, and a 6.16/225.56 beat Kerhulas in the first round. In the semifinal, he got the odd-lot single and advanced to the finals against Beck. Head was shooting for two wins in a row, but his 6.04/234.98 came up a bit short against Beck's 5.80/243.24 Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run. Jim attempted to qualify for the NHRA Grandnationals, but a best of 6.29/233.76 was a long way from the 5.89 bump spot for the eight-car show. Jim was at Beech Bend on August 23 for another NHRA Eastern Regional race. He ran 6.13/226.13 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. He smoked the tires to a losing 6.42/222.17 in the opening round, while his opponent, Dick LaHaie, won with a 5.92/237. He also failed to qualify for the IHRA US Open at Bristol on September 13 but got a break when Neil Mahr could not run. Jim was inserted into the field, but in the first round, Jeb Allen's 6.02 beat his 6.28.

Notes: Dick started his '81 season by qualifying #1 at the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Shirley Muldowney in a close first-round race with a 6.35/218 beating her 6.37/218. But he lost in the semifinal. Shortly after this, he had all his spare parts, tools, and fire suit stolen from his trailer. He had to borrow equipment to run at Pomona. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #14 with a 5.97/227.84. He ran an off pace 6.07 in the first round, that lost to Johnny Abbott's 5.89/243. At the NHRA Gatornationals in March, he used a 5.85/234.98 to qualify #11. In the first round, Dick ran a strong 5.92/234.37 but lost to Jody Smart's 5.81/245. The following week (March 22), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.00/230 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.18/224 beat Bobby Hilton's off-pace 6.54/218 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. In the semifinals, he ran 6.05/231 but lost to eventual winner Richard Tharp's 5.97/232 in the "Candies and Hughes" machine. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. It was a tough field to break into as it was only an eight-car show. Dick's best of 5.90 was good for the third alternate, but he was in good company as Gary Beck, Mark Oswald, Tharp, Connie Kalitta, and others failed to qualify.

Notes: Mike qualified #8 with a 5.927/239.99 at the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Doug Kerhulas with a 6.06/236.22 but wounded his engine and could not run in the second round. He ran a strong 5.772/240.64 to qualify #6 at the next NHRA event, the Gatornationals, on March 14. In the first round, his 6.043/236.22 lost to David Pace's slower 6.085/229.59. Mike qualified #1 in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round, against Terry Capp. His 5.769 at 237.46 in qualifying was a new track record. He attempted to qualify at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but a 5.95 best left him outside the eight-car field. The following week at State Capitol for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he again failed to make the field as a 6.037 was the 4th alternate. That was his final NHRA national event for the year. Notes: Murphy was one of 40 attempting to qualify in the sixteen-car field at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the field that had a 6.02 "bump." Jim qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.25/235.36. In the opening round, his 5.98/237.46 downed alternate, Richard Ogg's 6.72/213. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Doug Kerhulas' out of shape,8.20. The following week(March 15), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. Seventeen cars were there, and his 6.08/233.76 qualified #6. In round one, Murphy's 6.18/237.76 lost to Howard Haight's 6.15/235. He was back at OCIR on May 9 for the NHRA Western Regional race. He ran 6.10/233.76 in qualifying, and in the opening round, he got to solo at 6.39/233.76 when Tom Poindexter broke. But he boiled the hides in the semifinal to an 8.49 that lost to eventual winner Gary Cornwall's 6.20/234. Jim also ran at NHRA Fremont and was the first alternate at 5.927/233.76.

Notes: Dave was at Famoso in February for the Bakersfield March Meet where he qualified #12 with a 6.07/236.22. The race was delayed one week due to rain. Dave was unable to stay and alternate Ed McCulloch took his place in the field. On March 15, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 6.14/237.46 only qualified #7, but in the first round, he beat Jim Barnard with a 6.08/237.46, and in the semifinals, his 6.18/234.37 advanced when Gary Ormsby was shut off on the line. In the final, he faced Rob Stirling's Chevy-powered car. Dave got the victory with a final round 6.21/231.36 over Stirling's 6.32/223. | The team was runner up to Larry Sutton at OCIR the following weekend. It was a beautiful Don Long car with a Tom Hanna body and Kenny Youngblood paint design. Braskett painted it and Dennis did the upholstery and roll bar padding. – Dennis Taylor, Draglist LIVE, 5/04/20 | The team entered two NHRA national events in 1981. They were the sixth alternate at the Golden Gate Nationals at 5.995/226.13 and fifth alternate at the Orange County World Finals at 5.949/222.77.
