Notes: Gary started his driving career driving for Larry Minor at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He had run 5.88/237.46 to qualify #5, and in round one, his 6.01/238.72 beat Johnny Abbott's 6.05/243. In round two, his 6.02/238.72 lost to Connie Kalitta's 6.01/238. Gary qualified #1 at Bakersfield for the March Meet with a 5.86/234. A first-round 6.28 beat John Kimble, but he lost before the finals. He grabbed a win at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Baton Rouge on March 9. He qualified #1, and in the final, his 5.93/237.46 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Kelly Brown's 6.05/222 in his debut, driving the "Blue Max" dragster. Beck continued to get stronger with each race, and at Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the pole with a 5.818. He improved to a track record 5.717 at 243.24 in the first round to beat Dick LaHaie. Bob Noice broke on the line in the second round, and Gary soloed into the semifinals. He beat Richard Tharp driving the "Candies and Hughes" car with a 5.82. In the final, he faced Jeb Allen, and Allen ran a career-best 5.80 at 247 to get the victory over Beck's 5.92/236.22 runner-up attempt. NHRA ran the second Division 4 race at Green Valley Raceway on March 30, and Gary's 6.28 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. He narrowly won a close race with Tharp in the semifinals, where his 6.39/222.22 beat Richard's close 6.41/234. Beck was supposed to race Kalitta in the final, but Conrad had crashed into the safety net in his semifinal win and could not run in the final. Gary took an easy solo for the victory. He also won the third Division 4 race at Houston in April. However, only three cars showed up for the race. Beck set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.96, and in round one, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 5.97/235.60 to advance to the final. In the final, Steve Stephens broke, and Gary went 6.09/227.27 for the win. Another win came on April 27 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a tough show as it was only an eight-car show, but Gary's 5.95/238.72 qualified #4. A 6.04/239 in the first round beat Tharp's 6.05, and a semifinal 6.03/238 beat Shirley Muldowney's quicker 5.92. He was up against Allen in the final, and he reversed the outcome on the Gatornationals by stopping Jeb with a 5.93/239.36. Beck made a trip to OCIR in May for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Things didn't start so well there as he exploded a supercharger during qualifying on Friday. He made it worth his while as he came back out and qualified #1 with a 5.89 (Low ET) at 234.98. Gary beat Gary Ritter with a 5.94/236.84 and Kimble with a 6.04/231.95 before stopping Doug Kerhulas in the final with a 5.99/236.84. He skipped the Division 4 race at Amarillo but was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. His 5.98/236.84 qualified #6 for the show, and an improved 5.94/234.98 in the first round beat Mark Howick. In the second round, he smoked the tires to a 6.25 that lost to Stephens' 6.19. The team's next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was just an eight-car field, but Gack could qualify #3 with a 6.06. He ran a slightly improved 6.04 in the opening round to beat alternate Johnny Abbott's 6.22, and he improved even more to 6.00/232.55 in the semifinal to beat Allen's 6.18/214. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Jerry Ruth, and Ruth was tough as he had been the only car in the fives at this race. Sure enough, Jerry's 6.00/230 scored the victory over Beck's 6.14/218.44 runner-up bid. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.97 qualified #8. Gary's first-round 6.01/235.60 beat Bruce Hagestad's 6.14/229, but in round two, the car broke a fuel pump on the line, and Gary could only watch as Marvin Graham made a 5.94 solo into the semifinals. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.996/231.95. That set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Graham. Beck tried hard in their race, but Graham's 5.85 made it look easy as Gary was over two tenths back at 6.08. The Gainesville times were Gary's best on the 1980 NHRA tour. | Won Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge

Notes: Photo from Indy 1980. National Dragster listed Albuquerque, NM, as Tony's hometown when he ran at Sanair 1980. | I can confirm that Ceraolo lived in Albuquerque at that time. He had moved there to be close to family (elderly mother I think) and was only there a short time (maybe 2 years). He did run at least one time at Albuquerque Dragway while living there. - Lyle Greenberg

Notes: Grant qualified #12 at Gainesville at 6.20. In round one, he beat James Warren, 6.264/218.97 to 6.26/175. In round two, Pat Dakin got the best of him, 6.06/236 to 6.17/237.46. Grant was at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division One opener. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.98/240.00 (Low ET and Top Speed). But he was upset in round one, where Bob Simmons stepped up to a 5.99/227 to beat his hard-charging 6.27/240.00. Stoms failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.17/220 best. In July, the team ran a strong 5.910/242.58 #qualifier at NHRA Englishtown. Grant beat Paul Longenecker in round one, 6.28/210.77 to 6.77/163, but lost to Richard Tharp in round two, 6.03/243 to 6.27/214.79. Grant qualified #3 at Sanair at 6.15/233.76. He beat Bob Struksnes in round one, 6.04/219.51 to 6.36/203. Shirley Muldowney ended Grant's day in round two, 6.00/234 to 6.30/171.10. The team qualified #3 at Indy with a nice 5.922/241.28. Grant beat Johnny Abbott in round one, 6.086/223.88 to 6.31/226. Clive Skilton defeated his troubled 7.91/108 in round two with a 6.13/221. That was the team's last NHRA national event this year.

A first-round 6.02/240.00 beat Dave Uyehara's quicker 5.97/238, but in round two, his 6.05/241.28 lost to Jeb Allen's 5.88/245. Photo from 1980 US Nationals.

Notes: Hall started the year at Pomona, where he failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. Early in May, he was at Seattle International for the second NHRA Division Six race. He qualified #7, and in the first round, Mike Palmer fouled against him, and Ernie advanced with a 6.15/231.36. In the semifinal, eventual winner Rob Bruins' 6.07/241 dropped his 6.22/226.13. At the NHRA Regional race held at Jackson County Sports Park in September, Hall ran 6.34/222.77 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.16/227.84 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as Shirley Muldowney beat him with a 6.12/230. Ernie was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, where his 6.107/237.46 qualified #13. In the opening round, his 6.070/237.46 beat a broken Doug Kerhulas, but he fell to Jeb Allen in round two, 6.03/240 to 6.10/230.76. That was Ernie's only NHRA national event this year. Where did he run 5.99/241.28?

Notes: We need to confirm this 5.76. Do not think that the team went that quick (and indeed, NHRA reports that their 5.96 bump spot qualifier at Gainesville 3/81 was a career best to that point). Ran 238.72 at Columbus and 6.05 at Indy 80. | Kerry was at Rockingham in April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified for the eight-car field, but a 6.14/234 in the first round, lost to Mark Oswald's 6.12/236. On May 4 he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. A 6.45/234.98 qualified #6 for the eight-car show. Sweigert really improved once eliminations started as in round one, he beat Bobby Hilton with a 6.10/213.27. In the semifinals, a 6.15/217.91 beat Larry Bucher. He faced Jeb Allen in the final and unfortunately, he smoked the tires to a 14.97 that lost to Jeb's 6.01. Kerry was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 6.12/238.72. He qualified #12 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he lost to Marvin Graham in the first round. At New England for the NHRA Division 1 final Kerry's 6.29/228.42 qualified #6. He had problems in the first round, and shut off on the line against Neil Mahr. Kerry barely made the show at Indianapolis where his 6.05/240.64 qualified #31 in the 32 car field. John Kimble's 6.10/232 in the first round, beat his 6.13/237.46.

Notes: Duplicated his 240.64 best speed at the NHRA World Finals. | Jerry "The King" Ruth lived up nationwide to his nickname into the 80s, when he designed the "Swindhahl F-86," followed by Terry Capp/Bernie. Notes: Frank started the '80 season at the AHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #2 behind Connie Kalitta. He beat Johnny West in round one, and then Shirley Muldowney in the semifinals. In the final, he faced another tough opponent, Jeb Allen, but Bradley was more than up to the task, taking his first victory of the new year. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 5.864/237.46 qualified #3 for the show. Frank ran 5.92/227.27 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Junior Kaiser's 6.10/226. But his second round 6.12/220.58 fell to Richard Tharp's 6.05/243. He did not compete at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. A 5.97 qualified #6, but he lost to Allen in the second round. Frank qualified #6 again at the eight-car show at the Cajun Nationals with a 5.98/233.76, but he lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. On May 18, he was at Amarillo Dragway for the NHRA Division Four race. He reached the final only to have his quicker and faster 6.10/231.69 lose to Kaiser's 6.16/224. A 6.06/226.70 qualified #13 at the NHRA Springnationals, but Shirley had his number as a first-round 6.08 by the lady beat his 6.10. Another first-round loss came at the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where he qualified #2 at 6.11/213.78. On June 29, he was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.19 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but he met Don Garlits in the first round. Despite running a slightly quicker 6.12, he lost to Don's 6.13. Bradley qualified #9 at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown, but a first-round 5.98/233.76 lost to the low qualifier Tharp who ran a 5.90/243. Dragway 42 hosted the AHRA Grandnationals on July 27, and Frank was there, qualifying #5 with a 6.03 in the eight-car show and setting up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Garlits. For the second AHRA race in a row, Don beat Frank in the first round. He managed to qualify #4 with a 5.85 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals but was upset by Ernie Hall in the first round. Both smoked the tires, and Hall recovered first, running 6.22 to beat Frank's 6.26. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, Frank qualified #8 in the 32 car field with a 5.88/235.60. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in the first round, against Tony Ceraolo. At Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, he failed to qualify. He ran much better at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, where his 5.96/239.99 qualified #8. An opening round 5.90/235.60 beat John Kimble's 6.16/235, and in round two, his 5.97/237.46 took out Johnny Abbott's tire-smoker. He slowed to 6.02/240.00 in the semifinal, but it was still enough to cover Jerry Ruth's tire-blazing 7.61. He faced Shirley in the final, and as had been the case all season, the lady had a hex on him as her 5.95/241 got the victory over Frank's off-pace 6.46/204.09. He finished the NHRA season in tenth in the season-long points standings. Frank's 5.864 from Pomona was his best NHRA national event ET for 1980.

Notes: We need to confirm that this was Dave's own car (or was he driving for someone)? | On May 17, Dave was at OCIR for the third race of NHRA's Division 6. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.04/227.27. In the first round, he was involved in a tire smoking battle with John Kimble. Braskett's 7.90/150 finished second to Kimble's 7.46/197. Also 6.048 at Ontario World Finals 1980.

Notes: LaHaie attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.05/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). He did manage to qualify #9 at the Gatornationals, but he lost to Gary Beck's Low ET shot of 5.71/243 in the first round. Dick went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he broke in the semifinals while facing off against eventual winner Richard Tharp. He did win the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins with a final round 6.24/204.08. The second Division 2 race held at DeSoto Memorial only had two Top Fuel cars show. So to win, Dick just had to beat Bob Strauss, which he did with a 6.33/226.13. He almost did as well at the next Division 2 race, taking the runner-up spot to Jeb Allen at Gulfport International. Unfortunately, a best of 6.15/228.42 failed to make the show (third alternate) at the NHRA Springnationals. Dick rebounded by winning the next Division 2 race at Blaney with a final round 6.24 over Bob Strauss. He got his first NHRA National event win at the Summernationals on July 13. He qualified #5 with a 5.94/233.76 and a first-round 5.99/236.84 beat Bob Simmons. In the second round, a 6.00 took out Tharp in the "Candies and Hughes" car, and in the semifinal, he beat a tire-smoking Connie Kalitta. Facing him in the final was Jeb Allen, who had set Low ET at 5.85. Dick ran a consistent 5.95/235.60 to win over Jeb's 6.04/238. The following week (July 20), Dick was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.99 qualified #5 in the eight-car show, and he lost to low qualifier Marvin Graham in the first round. At the end of July, he was at Union Grove for the NHRA Division 3 race. Dick qualified #2 with a 6.06, and in the first round, his 6.25 beat Lou Novotny's 6.47. In the semifinals, LaHaie ran 6.11 to beat Luigi Novelli. In the final, he ran Shirley Muldowney, and despite running a 6.03, he lost to Shirley's 5.90. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.02 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he ran 6.08/226.70 to take out Allen, but he lost to Muldowney again in the semifinals. We formerly listed 5.705/240.00 for Dick this year. His best times in NHRA national event competition were 5.910 in Seattle and 238.72 at Englishtown. We are listing those as his best times until we can get confirmation on the 5.70/240. Won Division 2 in 1980. Dick also a 5.991/231.36 at Sanair. When he won the Summernationals over Jeb Allen, going 238 mph, it was the first time he had driven a fueler through the lights under power since his crash in 1975! - Dick LaHaie, Racing & Rockin Radio, 2/24/14

Notes: At the Division 4 Opener on March 9 at Baton Rouge, Kelly was runner-up to Gary Beck, clocking a 6.05/222.22 in the final to Beck's 5.93/237. A week later, the team was at Gainesville for the Gatornationals. It was a rough weekend for the team as they blew two engines and a supercharger in qualifying. Finally, a 5.900/233.76 landed them in the #3 spot. Unfortunately, Brown lost to Richard Tharp in the opening round with a 10-second shutoff. Another early loss came at the second Division 4 race at Green Valley, where he qualified #5 with a 6.77 but lost in the first round. Kelly qualified #13 at Ontario World Finals at 6.015/238.09. In round one, he lost on a holeshot to Connie Kalitta, 6.159/229.59 6.140/218.97. Photo from 1980 Green Valley WWCS. Dave Settles ran ACI chassis. Foster Yancey & Brad Camp also had an A/FD. Notes: Larry was at Indianapolis in April for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.22/230.76 but failed to reach the finals. The following week (April 27), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.09 best failed to qualify for the all-five second field. NHRA ran the second Division 3 race at Edgewater in May. Brown ran 6.17 to qualify third, but a troubled 12.32 in the opening round lost to Mark Oswald. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #12 with a 6.05/233.76. He made an easy solo in the first round when opponent Jeb Allen shut off with no oil pressure. In round two, his 6.25/226 advanced when Bob Noice broke a couple of rods and oiled down the track. Lady luck seemed to be on his side as a 6.21/234 advanced in the semifinals when Steve Stephens fouled. But his luck ran out there as in the final, he faced Shirley Muldowney. She had been running 6.0s in all three of her elimination runs, and Brown was in trouble unless she broke. Sure enough, Shirley ripped off a bracket like 6.04/233 to win over Brown's 6.57/163.04 shut-off run. It was still an excellent showing for the "Roach Coach." After such a good showing, Larry hoped for more of the same at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #14 and advanced over a wheelstanding Dave Uyehara in round one. In round two, he faced Allen, and both had problems. Jeb broke a rear-end but coasted through as the winner when Larry blew an engine. Brown followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 6.26/214.28 ended up as the third alternate. He qualified #29 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.030/238.09, and his 6.082/220.58 in the first round wasn't too bad, but Allen's 5.918/245 was better and advanced Jeb into round two. | This race is interesting because we formerly listed Larry at 5.919 for this year, but his best NHRA national event ET was the 6.030 at Indy. He did run 6.0's almost everywhere. We think the formerly-listed 5.919 was confused with Jeb Allen's winning time against Larry in round one at Indy, 5.918 to 6.082. Let us know if you have evidence of Larry going 5.919 this year.

Notes: Jim lost to Connie Kalitta in the first round, at the Bakersfield March Meet. He was at Fremont in April for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #8 with a 6.10/231 and a 6.09/228.42 beat Joe Ortega's 6.19/231 in the first round. But in round two he had problems and shut off to 11.86 in a loss to Gary Ritter's 6.09/229. He qualified #23 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.98/231.36, but a 6.15/229.00 in the first round, lost to Gary Beck's 6.01/239.

Notes: Chris started the '80 season by qualifying #4 at the AHRA Winternationals. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in the first round. A week later (February 3), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.028/232.55 qualified on the "bump." He lost a motor in the first round and the race. Both he and Bob Noice ran 6.100 (The Greek's at 234.37), but Bob got the win light. He made an amazing pass at the Bakersfield March Meet during qualifying. The car got completely sideways at around 150 MPH, but Karamesines somehow saved it. In June, he was in St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. His 6.34/218.98 qualified #5. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.52/214.80 lost to Jody Smart's 6.39/224. Karamesines qualified #7 in the eight-car field at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Chris won round one over a broken Mark Oswald at PHR championships at 6.06/226.70. In the semifinal, an off-pace 6.48/227 lost to Don Garlits' 6.34/238. Qualified 16th at Indy 1980 at 5.923/236.22 in the last 32 car show there. He fouled against Junior Kaiser in round one and lost despite running quicker, 6.09/229 to the Greek's 5.985/230.76. Pomona and Indy were his only two NHRA national events of the year.

Notes: Dennis qualified #3 at Fremont for the NHRA Division Six race on April 20 with a 5.94/227.84. The race was rain-delayed, and many cars did not make it back for the rain date. Because of this, Baca got to solo in the first two rounds before he lost to the eventual winner Marvin Graham, in the semifinals.
