Notes: Ran 6.08/231.36 at Bakersfield and 6.04/238.72 at OCIR WCS 76, where he was runner-up. Gary was in Sacramento on June 19 for the second NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.19/230.18. An opening round 6.13/225 beat Dennis Baca, but he lost to eventual winner Gary Cochran in the semifinals. Gary was the first alternate at the World Finals at 6.083/236.22. That was his only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Hagestad's 6.24/240.00 was the first alternate for the Phoenix Winter Classic at Beeline Dragway. He got into the show when Bill Pryor had to drop out with problems. Unfortunately, Bruce was shut off on the line due to an oil leak, and his opponent Bob Struksnes got a solo into round two with a 6.29/226. Bruce was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona (times unavailable but no quicker than 6.75). That was his only NHRA national event of the year. The car was known as the Stock Broker.

Notes: The team switched to an aluminum Keith Black hemi mid-year. Ran 5.95/234.37 at Winternationals | Kaiser started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #14, and in the first round, his 6.33 beat Gaines Markley's 6.47. In round two, the eventual winner Frank Bradley's 6.25/214, beat his 6.46/212.76. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic. A 6.13/229.59 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field, and an opening-round 6.25/221.67 took out Ken Moitoza's tire-smoking 7.70/127. In the second round, Jerry Ruth also smoked the tires against him, and Kaiser's 6.20/233.16 advanced. He slowed to 6.51/214.79 in the semifinal, and that was enough to let Gary Beck gave the win at 6.31/218. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom recorded a first for himself. His 5.95/234.37 in qualifying was his first trip into the five-second bracket. That gave him the #8 spot in the show. He duplicated those times in the first round, to beat Jim Murphy. In round two, he beat Tom Toler, but his semifinal 6.27/212.76 fell to James Warren's 6.11/236. Still, it was a strong showing for the team. The next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet. Kaiser qualified #13 in the 32 car field with a 6.12/230.17. Another 6.12 at 231.36 beat Terry Capp's 6.32/222 in round one. An off-pace 6.53/208.81 still beat Dave Braskett in round two, and he ran his best of the weekend, a 6.10/234.37 to beat John Wiebe's 6.13/229 in round three. However, the run took its toll as Tom was unable to show for his semifinal race against Tony Nancy.

Crane lost on a massive holeshot to Clive Skilton (who ran 6.37) but still managed a 6.03 to back up his record. Peter ran 6.47/185 and 6.48/211 at Santa Pod 5/76. He led the field with a 6.82/196 at Santa Pod 8/76. Peter ran 6.57/196, 6.65/194, 6.37/201 at Santa Pod 9/76. We need an official third digit on the five if anyone has it. Speed on the run was 215. Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Runner up at Columbus. | Bob qualified #14 at the Gatornationals with the 6.18. He had a strange first-round race with Clayton Harris. Harris fouled, handing the win to Edwards, but Bob crossed the centerline on his pass and was disqualified. It was the old "first or worse rule." At the NHRA Division Two opener held at Warner Robins, Bob had a very close first-round race against Jim Bucher that saw both cars break the beams at 6.46. The Chevy ace got the win light, however. Bob won the second NHRA Division 2 race at DeSoto (Bradenton) on April 11. He qualified #2 with a 6.41/230.76 behind pole-sitter Clayton Harris at 6.41/224. These two would advance to the final. To reach the final, Bob got to make two easy solo passes, with his best time being 6.88/216.80. Harris was unable to show in the final, so Edwards made a 6.42/217.91 pass for the victory. On May 9, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field but got into the show as an alternate. In his first-round match, he stepped up to 6.26/233.16 but lost to a quicker-leaving Hank Endres, who won with a 6.28/231. Bob attempted to qualify for the eight-car field at the Dutch Classic held at Maple Grove in May. Unfortunately, his 6.41 was only good enough for the first alternate. Edwards was at Blaney S.C. in early June for the third NHRA Division Two race, and while he didn't reach the finals, he left his mark by setting Top Speed at 236.22. At the NHRA Springnationals, Edwards qualified dead last in the sixteen-car show with a 6.25. He did make the most of it, though. A first-round 6.37/229 beat Pat Dakin's tire-smoking 6.74. A 6.50/229 in round two dropped a tire-smoking Graham Light at 6.82/206. His 6.31/233 won in the semifinals when Richard Tharp also smoked the tires to a 6.56 loss. In the final, he ran a 6.30/227.37 but lost to Shirley Muldowney, who was picking up her first NHRA National event win with a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet charge of 5.96/243.90. Bob attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but his 6.24 best failed to make the show. The following weekend(July 18), he was at Suffolk for the fourth NHRA Division Two race. Edwards qualified on the "bump" with a 6.27 for the eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.31 lost to Larry Bucher's 6.20.

Notes: Toler started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Tom qualified #4 at 5.896/238.72 at the Pomona Winternationals. He ran 5.960/234.37 with the backup steel block to win round one when Pat Dakin smoked the tires. Tom did not show against Tom Kaiser in round two. The team went to Gainesville but was the last alternate (times unavailable). Their next NHRA national event was the World Finals at Ontario, where Tom was the fourth alternate at 6.100/238.72. Did the team run 240.22 somewhere this year? Former Don Prudhomme "Yellow Feather." AKA Rainbow car. Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. | Ritter was at Ontario Motor Speedway for its New Year's Day race. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.07. In the opening round of competition, his 6.26/225 beat John Rodeck's Chevy-powered car at 6.41/225. In the second round, his off-pace 6.61/212 lost to Flip Schofield's 6.33. The team then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. A 5.92/238.72 qualified #3. Gary got a solo in the first round, when Don Durbin shut off on the line. He ran 6.21/221.12 to advance. It was in round two that we saw just how good a driver Riter was. He was racing Dave Braskett when Gary had his motor blow. Pieces of it took out the right rear slick, and only his amazing job of driving kept the dragster from crashing. We needless to say, he lost the round as Braskett won with a 6.09/217. He did not run again until Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, his 5.99/238.09 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Bradley in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.09/227.84 qualified #9 for the 32 car show. Stan Shiroma's Chevy was shut off on the line against him in the first round, and Ritter soloed at 6.20/223.88. In round two, Gary lost another engine, and his competition, John Wiebe, advanced with a 7.09/177.

Notes: Graham started his season at Beeline at the Phoenix Winter Classic. He showed up with a new Dan-Capp 8.71 blower. He qualified #14 with a 6.20/232.55. Unfortunately, he had his brakes fail on the line in the first round, and he could not stage properly. That gave his opponent Gary Beck a free pass into round two. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. OCIR held its East vs. West meet, and Graham was one of the six cars chosen to run. All cars were to make three runs. In his first race against James Warren, he had problems and shut off to 6.56/166.97 while Warren won with a 5.88 (Low ET). In his second race, his supercharger exploded, and he was done for the day. He was supposed to run at Fremont's East vs. West meet the following day, but the damage was too severe. He also did not run at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #8 at 6.13/229.00. An opening round 6.15/222.77 beat Steve Stephens' 6.45, and he got a solo in round two when Bob Struksnes was unable to repair his car in time. Graham ran 6.22/238.72 to advance. In the semifinals, he ran the strong Chevy-powered car of Jim Bucher. Neither had a good run, but Jim's 6.40 beat Marvin's 6.66 to the stripe. The following week(March 21), he was at LaPlace Dragway for the NHRA Division Four opener. It was an eight-car show, and Graham soloed with a 7.06 in round one, when Bill Wigginton broke. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.10 at 229.00, beating Dale Wilch and moving him into the final against Frank Bradley. With a 6.18/234.98 (Top Speed), Graham picked up the victory over Bradley's 6.26/209. He was back at LaPlace for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 2. A 6.30/214.79 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he had a coasting contest with Wigginton as both blew their engines. He won that race, and in the semifinals, he got a solo when Stephens could not show. Graham advanced with a 9.05. The final was noteworthy as his competition, Richard Tharp, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car, thought Graham was trying to burn him down. Marvin later admitted that he probably did as the Donovan engine could take more heat than the later model KB engines. Tharp won their race quite easily, running 6.35/234 for the victory over Graham's 6.61/183.29. But it wasn't over yet as Tharp came over and started beating on Graham's helmet while it was still on his head. Marvin responded with, "Richard, you won! What are you upset about?" Not long after that, Marvin was at Tulsa for the AHRA "Okie" Nationals. A 6.43 qualified #4 for the eight-car show, and he beat Dale Wilch's Chevy-powered car in round one. Graham smoked the tires to a 7.46/145.73 loss in the semifinals to eventual winner Bradley's 6.14/231. El Paso Dragway hosted the next NHRA Division Four race on May 16, and the Graham vs. Bradley rivalry continued. Graham ran 6.86/199 over Paul Smith and a solo 6.66/206.42 to reach the final against Bradley. The two had a great race that saw Bradley win with a 6.67/206 over Graham's 6.73/211.76 (Top Speed). He defended his PDA title in 1976, but he ran into a dry spell after making some serious engine changes. Photo from the 1976 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. The best NHRA times were 6.132/238.72 at Gainesville. Also ran 6.184 at Indy and 233.16 at OCIR on 7/31/76.

Notes: Ken qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Classic. A 6.24/226.13 got him the spot. In the opening round, the car went into tire shake, and he shut down to 7.70/127.65 in a loss to Tom Kaiser's 6.25/221. He was at Fremont on February 22 for the East vs. West Championships. He was filling in as the cars of Gary Beck, Marvin Graham, Jeb Allen, and Rick Ramsey all suffered from engine damage the night before at OCIR. Moitoza's car failed to fire in his first race against Gary Ritter. In the second race, his 6.39/203.61 beat Ritter, who blew an engine. In his final race, he shut down to 10.52 in a loss to Larry Dixon. He was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race early in May. He qualified #14, and Rick Ramsey fouled against him in the opening round. Ken lost in the second round. He also raced at Sacramento in June for its NHRA Division Seven race. His 6.24/225.01 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Gary Cochran in the first round. Ken lost their race. Moitoza was back at OCIR at the end of July for the third PDA Championship race. Forty cars attempted to qualify for the 32-car field, and his 6.51 qualified #28. All the "name" drivers dropped off in eliminations, and he found himself in the final against Gary Beck. His day started by winning the first round over an engine-blowing Jim Bucher. Randy Allison had a blower explode in round two, and once again, Ken advanced. He had to make a hard run in the third round, where his 6.25/231.36 defeated Hank Johnson's 6.44/171. He then pulled off a major upset in the semi-final, where his 6.02/238.09 dropped Marvin Graham's 6.08/233. It looked like he would win the whole thing in the final as he had gotten out ahead of Beck, who was busy smoking the tires, but then Ken's also broke loose, and Gary's 6.43/226 drove around his 6.89/203 for the victory. - Ron Howard | Another take: I remember Ken Moitoza having some big moments in top fuel, like getting a runner-up finish to Gary Beck at the PDA Championships at OCIR in 1976. He was the surprise of the event, and look what he did: Rd. 1 Jim Bucher, Rd. 2 Randy Allison, Rd. 3 Hank Johnson, SF Marvin Graham. That's a hard day's work in anybody's book. - Clifford Cain

Notes: Bruins had just gotten his Top Fuel driver's license a week before he was driving Herm Petersen's car at Portland International's Rose Festival Drag Championships on June 6. It was a fourteen-car show, and he qualified #2 with a 6.14. In the opening round, the two low qualifiers got to make solos. Rob ran 6.12/237.46 (Top Speed). He got another solo in round two when Stan Shiroma could not run after losing an engine in the first round. This time Bruins advanced with a 6.10/226. In the semifinals, he came up against Hank Johnson. Hank had been running 6.20s in eliminations, but he picked up to a track record 5.93/233 to beat Bruins' 6.22/232. He won the NHRA Division Six race at Mission Raceway. A 6.24/193.13 beat Maynard Garrity's 6.53/206 in round one, and a 6.12/233.76 in the semifinal topped Johnson's 6.26/227. He was to face Bob Mitchell in the final, but Bob had problems and was a no-show. Bruins made a 6.41/166.97 solo for the win. Rob did not race at the first PDA Championship race held in Seattle. Rob beat a fouling Garlits at the second PDA Championships race at Fremont. His final round times were 5.96/236.22. Rob finished #2 in Division 6 in 1976 while filling in for Herm Petersen. He also ran 6.07/229 at Irwindale WCS.

Notes: Shiroma started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway's New Year's Day race. He qualified #13 with a 6.67. But his opening round 6.55/225 lost to Flip Schofield's 6.34/208. After that, he went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere event. He really shook them up there when he qualified on the pole with his 5.86 (Low ET) at 236.84. It was the first time a Chevy-powered Top Fuel car had broken into the 5.8 barrier. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to the eventual winner Rance McDaniel, who was also running a Chevy-powered car. Shiroma ran 6.069/236.22 for the fourth alternate at the Pomona Winternationals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #25 in the 32 car field. In the opening round, he developed some trouble and was shut off on the line. His opponent, Gary Ritter, advanced with a 6.20. He had a bad weekend in Portland on June 6. He was there for the Rose Festival Drag Championships. It was a fourteen-car field, and Stan lost an engine while qualifying #12 with a 6.88. In the opening round of eliminations, he beat Bob Mitchell's 6.22/226 with a 6.20/211, but it cost him another motor, and he was done for the day. Stan qualified #10 at the NHRA Fallnationals at 6.045/223.88 but lost first-round to a Gary Beck holeshot, 6.19/233 to 6.18/217. He qualified #15 at Ontario at 6.053/233.16. In round one, he beat Ray Stutz, 6.35/230.76 to 6.43/235.60, but Dennis Baca got him in round two, 5.99/231.95 to 6.52/193.96.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. AKA Preying Mantis. | Allen started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he failed to qualify. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for its East vs. West meet. Six cars were to run, with the winner of the event determined by race wins. In Jeb's first race, his off-pace 6.50/215 lost to a motor-blowing Gary Beck who ran 6.00/212. He won his second race with a 6.27/229.59 over Marvin Graham, who lost a blower on the run. In his third race, Allen's car broke and slowed to a 6.77/151.26 loss to James Warren's 6.02/215. He was supposed to race at Fremont's East vs. West race the next day(Feb.22), but the engine damage kept him from competing there. He also did not run at the Bakersfield March Meet or the NHRA Gatornationals. He was at the NHRA Division Seven opener held at Fremont on March 28. There he qualified #15 with a 6.28/227.27. In round one, his slightly improved 6.20/217.39 beat Arley Langlo. Jeb continued to improve in round two, where his 6.14/232.55 beat Rick Uribe. But in the semifinals, his off-pace 6.67/201.79 lost to Dave Braskett's 6.14/231. The NHRA Division 6 opener was run at Seattle on May 2. Allen qualified #4 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.22/225.56. An opening round 6.25/225.00 beat Jim Barnard's 6.71/194. In round two, his 6.72/188.67 lost to Bob Mitchell's 6.42/204. The rest of the race was rained out until May 9. On May 8th, Allen was in Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.02 qualified #2 behind Beck's 5.99. An opening round 6.18/232.55 beat Herm Petersen's identical 6.18/235. But the run was costly as Jeb hurt the motor and could not return for his semifinal match against Hank Johnson. He was at the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus, where he made six passes, attempting to qualify, but his 6.29 best left him as the second alternate for the show. He always had good luck at Englishtown, and '76 was no different. His 6.07/234.37 qualified #8 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he got a solo in round one, when Grant Stoms was unable to run. A 6.13/210.77 advanced. In round two, his 6.13/227.27 beat Beck's 6.66/161. Allen improved to 6.06/228.42 to beat Dale Funk's similar 6.06/238 in the semifinals. This moved him into the finals against Richard Tharp, driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. The two had a good race, but Tharp won his first NHRA national event with a 5.99/244 over Jeb's best of the weekend,6.04/231.36.

Notes: Frank was driving Walt Barbin's car at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, an opening-round 6.67 lost to Junior Kaiser's 6.50. On the NHRA national event trail, Walt drove at Pomona but failed to qualify. Holden took over and was the second alternate at Gainesville at 6.260/234.37 and the #9 qualifier at Columbus at 6.205/220.04. He lost to Shirley Muldowney in round one, 6.07/228 to 6.532/200.89. Frank also ran 6.08/231.95 at IHRA Bristol Spring 1976. The team was the fifth alternate at Englishtown (no times available but slower than #4 alternate Ted Wolf, who ran 6.259). Barbin drove at Indy but was the third alternate. That was the team's last NHRA national event for the year.

Notes: Tom was at Tucson in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #14 in the sixteen-car field and in the first round, his 6.33 beat Gaines Markley's 6.47. In the second round his 6.46/212.76 lost to eventual winner Frank Bradley's 6.25/214. He the NHRA Winter Classic at Beeline Dragway. Tom lasted all the way to the semifinals before losing to Gary Beck. He ran his first ever "5," a 5.95/234.37 during qualifying at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. That placed him in the #8 spot in the field. Another 5.95/234.37 in the first round, beat Jim Murphy and in the second round, he took out Tom Toler. In the semifinals, his 6.27/212.76 lost to James Warren's 6.11/236. Not too bad for a steel motor running against all the aluminum motored cars.

Notes: Unique body design hid the slicks in these tapered pods, but Don returned to a conventional setup. Don qualified #15 at Pomona at 6.030/235.60. He lost to Paul Longenecker on a holeshot in round one, 6.085/237.46 to Don's 6.061/234.37. His next event was Englishtown, where he finished as the first alternate at 6.224/223.32. Don qualified #7 at the Sanair Grandnationals at 6.377/220.58. He lost to Grant Stoms in round one, 6.17/218 to 6.41/211.76. That was Don's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: By '76, the Donovan engine was not the motor of choice for Top Fuel dragsters. But there were some strong holdouts, including this team. Their season started with the AHRA Winternationals held in Tucson. Bill qualified #12, but in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.48 lost to Jim Plummer's 6.37. The next stop was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. There, his 6.22/223.88 qualified #15. Unfortunately, the motor was damaged on that pass, and Bill could not run in eliminations. The first alternate, Bruce Hagestad, took his place in the show. Bill was the 11th alternate at Pomona. Times unknown, but no quicker than the 6.75 recorded by the 10th alternate. Bill was the eighth alternate in Gainesville (no times, but not quicker than 6.28). They got closer at Columbus, but their 6.293/222.22 was the first alternate. Bill made the show at Indy, running 6.133/235.60 for the #22 slot. Jeb Allen crossed the center line in round one, sending Bill's 6.261/229.59 on to round two. Frank Bradley ended his day there with a 6.046/197.36 taking out Pryor's troubled 12.41/59.00. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year, but they did win the 1976 Division 3 championship in a repeat. | The team won the 1976 division title as well, in addition to the AHRA Nationals in St. Louis. - Phil Burgess, Dragster Insider, 9/30/08
