Notes: Bob was at Mission Raceway in July for the NHRA Division Six race. In the opening round, his 6.40/181.08 beat Tom Christensen's 6.78/198. In the semi-final, he then ran 6.27/228.42 to defeat Mike Palmer's 6.43/214. He was to face Rob Bruins in the final, but he suffered engine damage in his semi-final win and could not run. Shortly after that, he was in Seattle for the PDA's first of three races. It was a 32-car field, and in round one, his 6.61 advanced when Jim Bucher's Chevy failed to fire. Gary Beck threw a blower belt in the second round, and Mitchell ran 230.17 to advance. He lost in the next round. He qualified #16 at NHRA Seattle at 6.106/235.50. Bob broke against Hank Johnson in round one. That was Bob's only NHRA national event in 1976.

Notes: Walt was at Ontario Motor Speedway for its New Year's Day race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.59 qualified #10. In the first round, he hurt some parts on the run and could not race his opponent, James Warren. Ran 6.26/235.60 at OCIR WCS. Did the team run another 5.99 at 240 this year?

Notes: This team was out to prove that the Chevy "Rat" motor could survive in a class dominated by the Chrysler Hemi. Some Chevy-powered Top Fuel cars were still out there in 1976, and five of them qualified for the sixteen-car field at the Irwindale Grand Premiere event. McDaniel's 6.24/223 got him the #9 spot in the show. That gave him the honor of running low qualifier Stan Shiroma, who had run the first 5.8 by a Chevy to get the pole. Shiroma went up in smoke in their race, and McDaniel advanced with a 6.31. He took on another Chevy-powered car in round two. This time, Rance quickened his pace to 6.17/224 to beat Howard Haight's slowing 7.13/121. He ran 6.24/225 in the semifinals to beat Dave Braskett's 6.46/223. His final-round opponent was Frank Bradley, who had run 5.96 in his semifinal race. It didn't look good for the "Valley Fever" car, but Bradley smoked the tires and shut off to 10.20 while Rance ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.15/225.56, to pick up the victory. The team's next stop was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. There were only two Chevy-powered cars qualified. Rance had the quickest, getting the #10 spot, while Larry Dixon qualified his Chevy right behind in the #11 spot. Both lost in round one. Rance's off-pace 6.76 lost to Bradley's 6.33. The team failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but was awarded the "best appearing pro crew." McDaniel qualified #21 in the 32-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. His 6.23/222.77 lost to Braskett's 6.09/229 in the first round. Sacramento held an eight-car show, and Rance lost to the only other Chevy in the field in the first round. Dixon's 6.16 advanced when McDaniel had problems and had to shut down. Nitro Championships Orange County CA 1976. Also ran 6.15 at Irwindale Grand Premiere.

Notes: AKA The Carpetbagger. Best times at NHRA Ontario at 5.870/234.37. | Baca started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.07/216.86 best failed to make the field. His next showing was at the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.09/229.00 qualified #10 in the 32 car show. But he was a little late off the line in the opening round, and his 6.18/226.13 lost to Gary Cochran's 6.22/224. Later that month, he won an eight-car show at Sacramento. Dennis had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.01, and in the first round, his 6.31/193 beat Shorty Leventon's 6.41/218. Gary Ormsby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak in the semifinals, and Baca's 6.15/227.85 advanced. He faced Shirley Muldowney in the final, and she had problems and shut down to 9.61 while Dennis got the victory with a 6.25/202.24. At the end of March, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. His 6.25/231.95 qualified #12. He faced Gary Beck in the opening round, and Beck had run 6.07 in qualifying, so it looked bad for Baca. But Beck's car sounded rough, and sure enough, it spit and popped to a 27 second time while Dennis advanced with a 6.46/220.58. However, his fun was short-lived as in round two, eventual winner Frank Bradley's 6.23/214 sent Baca's 6.37/231.36 packing for home.

Notes: Gary qualified #26 at the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.31. An opening round 6.22/224.43 beat Dennis Baca's quicker 6.18/226, but in round two, he shut down to an 8.18 in a loss to Don Garlits' 6.15. On June 6, Cochran competed at Portland International for the Rose Festival Drag Championships. It was an unusual fourteen-car field, and Gary qualified #7 at 6.31. An opening round 6.29/234 beat a motor-blowing Ron Smith, and in the second round, his 6.12/234 beat Jim Barnard's 6.16/233. But in the semifinals, eventual winner Jerry Ruth ran 6.04/233 to beat his 6.18/233. Gary was at Sacramento on June 19 for the second NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.15/230.18. In the opening round, another 6.15 at 231.37 (Top Speed) beat Ken Moitoza, and he set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.13/225.56 to take out Gary Cornwall. He faced Garth Widdison in the final, and Garth broke while Gary picked up the victory with a 6.17/230.17. Ran 6.30/230 at Irwindale WCS.

Notes: ZL1 Chevy Engine. Photo from the 1976 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 5.99 at Irwindale WCS. | Dixon started his season at the New Years Day race at Ontario Motor Speedway. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show with a 6.80. An opening round 6.52/179 hurt some parts, but he still advanced as his competition, Arly Langlo, smoked the tires and shut off. The engine was too badly hurt to run the second round. He then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. There, his 6.42/216 qualified #12. An impressive 6.16/223 in the first round, beat Gary Beck's quicker 6.14/234. He got even quicker in round two, where his 5.99/226 beat Jim Plummer. Unfortunately, Larry smoked the tires in the semifinals, and his 7.97 lost to Frank Bradley's 5.96. His next stop was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11, but in the first round, his off-pace 6.73 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 6.34. Beeline hosted the NHRA sanctioned Phoenix Winter Classic on January 25. A 6.19/223.32 qualified the Chev #12 in the field. But in the first round, both he and his opponent, Jerry Ruth, smoked the tires. Ruth's 6.40/199 came out on top over Dixon's 6.49/225.00. No Chevy-powered cars could qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and Larry had to watch from the sidelines. On February 21, he was at OCIR's East vs. West meet. Dixon wasn't in competition, but when Rick Ramsey had a blower explode in the first round, of the six-car match race, his car was pressed into service. He ran Beck in his first race, and the Chev's 7.49/179.64 lost to Gary's motor blowing 6.42/185. In his second race, he improved a lot, running 6.26/233.16 to beat Muldowney's shut-off, 10.50-61. The following day he was at Fremont for its East vs. West show. Once again, it was a six-car round-robin show. An opening round 6.27/225.56 beat James Warren's 6.58/196. A second-round 6.36/223.32 beat Bradley who blew a head gasket. In the third race, his 6.48/226 beat Ken Moitoza who shut down to 10.52. Dixon was declared the winner of the race based on wins in the competition. Larry was at Portland in May for the Oregon Open. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.11 and lost to Hank Johnson in the opening round. The next day(May 8), he was at Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. The qualifying had been done on May 2, but it rained, and the race was postponed one week. Larry qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field at 6.28/206.89. He had the only Chevy-powered car in the field. In round one, his 6.38/222.77 beat Gaines Markley's 6.60/189. In round two, his 6.26/214.28 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.23/235. He was at Columbus in June for the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.30 best ended up as the fourth alternate for the show. He won the OCIR Nitro Championships held on June 26. He stopped Randy Allison in the final. He was at Seattle for the first race of the PDA Championships in July, but his 6.52 in the first round, lost to Johnson's 6.42. On the NHRA trail, Larry did not qualify at Pomona (times not reported), fourth alternate DNQ at Columbus (6.306/225.00), and #32 qualifier at Indy at 6.352/225.00. Larry improved mightily in round one, to upset Rob Bruins, 6.136/233.76 to 6.174/240.64. He then lost to Jerry Ruth in round two, 6.044/231.95 to 6.378/205.47. Larry then did not qualify at the Fallnationals (times not reported) and at the World Finals, where he ran a nice 6.100/231.95 for the third alternate slot.

Notes: Walt "Tricks" Barbin was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona (times unavailable). Frank Holden also had a Top Fuel license and drove at the team's following two NHRA national events, Columbus and Englishtown. Walt was back in the saddle at Indy but was a second alternate DNQ at 6.44/199.11, which makes sense, given that the bump spot was a 6.41. But we show a 6.68/196.93 on one version of the DNQ sheet. Walt was at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the Snowbird National Open at the end of November. His 6.26/233.76 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.43/223.32 beat Marvin Schwartz, but he left before the tree had even been activated in the semi-final, and eventual winner Ron Correnti soloed into the final. We formerly listed 5.835/234.37, but we think that is the 1980 IHRA Bristol ET and one of the 234.37 NHRA runs from another year. We need confirmation.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1976. Tom had a bad weekend at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in June. While attempting to qualify for the show, he had just finished making a 221.13 pass that failed to qualify. Then his parachute failed to open, and he drove into the safety net. The dragster ripped through the net and ended up getting wedged under a guardrail. Somehow, Tom was miraculously unharmed.

Notes: Salisbury started his season at Ontario Motor Speedway for the New Year's Day race. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.34/199. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.25/220 beat a crossed-up Dave Braskett. Eventual winner James Warren stopped him in round two with a 6.03/213 that took out his 6.22/224. Dwight qualified #9 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals; this set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Paul Longenecker. Dwight smoked the tires in that first-round race to a 7.04/157.34 that lost to Paul's 6.24/222. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.02/222.22. Unfortunately, he lost to Warren in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #16 in the 32 car field with a 6.14. He got a solo in the first round, when Gary Read shut off on the line with problems. Dwight advanced with a 6.44/153.84. In round two, his 6.36/222.22 beat a wheelstanding Gary Cornwall. He got another solo in round three when Denver Schulz could not show after blowing his engine in round two. Dwight ran 6.35/226.13 to advance. Once again, it was Warren who put an end to his run. In the semifinal, Salisbury's 6.50 lost to Warren's strong 5.90 (Low ET). He did not run at Gainesville for the Gatornationals, but on March 28, he was at Fremont for the opening NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #9 at 6.21/232.55, but low qualifier Warren stopped him in the opening round. James' 5.97/235 put Dwight's 6.43/207.37 on the trailer. Notes: Allison had not raced since mid-'74 when he showed up at Ontario Motor Speedway for its New Year's Day race. He ran 6.17/196 to qualify #3 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.31/209 beat Gary Read's tire-smoking 6.96/179. Frank Bradley slept on the line in round two, and Allison's 6.32/201 beat Frank's much quicker 6.10/233. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire in the semifinal, giving his opponent, Flip Schofield, a solo into the final. Randy then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.14 qualified #6. But he had hurt some parts during qualifying and could not run in eliminations. Alternate Gary Cornwall took his place in the field. His next appearance came at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.56 qualified on the "bump" for the 32 car show. Once again, he had trouble in qualifying and was unable to race in eliminations. This time Read took his spot in the show. Allison was runner-up to Larry Dixon at the OCIR Nitro Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.13/239.36 that beat Dwight Salisbury's 6.31/220. Randy did not enter any NHRA national events this year.

Notes: Schultz was at Ontario Motor Speedway's New Year's Day race. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.24/217. In the first round, he beat Ray Stutz with a 6.25/204. In round two, he got a solo as Larry Dixon had broken some parts in his first-round race and could not return for round two. Denver ran 6.52 to advance. He had an excellent race against James Warren in the semifinals that saw his quicker 6.09/227 lose to Warren's 6.10/204. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.98/231.36 qualified #10. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Beck in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #20 in the 32 car field. A first-round 6.11/213.27 beat Jim Barnard, who had to shut down with lots of tire shake. In round two, Shorty Leventon fouled against him, and he blew the motor on a 7.36 pass. Due to the blown engine, Schultz could not return for his round three match against Dwight Salisbury.

Notes: Photo from the 1976 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Team was so happy with Farr-built, former LaHaie car that they had Wayne build their first brand new dragster. | Hank ran really well at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. The track record going into this event was 6.10. He ran 6.05, 6.03, and 6.01 to win, stopping Clayton Harris in the final.
