Notes: Paul attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.202/216.81 was good for the third alternate spot. He was at the Gatornationals and qualified #9 at 6.380/211.25, but he fouled against low qualifier Gary Beck in round one, on a 6.65/187.89 pass. He ran 6.317/2121.76 at the Springs (R1 loss), 6.387/228.42 at the Summers (R1 loss), 6.403/209.30 #12 qualifier at the Grandnationals, and a 6.316/213.27 first-round win over Herm Petersen, but shutoff loss to Terry Capp in round two. He qualified #24 at Indy at 6.244/234.98 (R1 loss), and #13 qualifier at Ontario at 6.045/220.59, and a tough R1 loss to Dave Settles, 6.13/216 to 6.161/231.95. Photo From 1974 US Nationals. Notes: Bob started the '74 season at Beeline in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 with a 6.31/227.27. A first-round 6.41/225.00 lost to Don Garlits' 6.12/227. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to qualify. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, he ran a 6.46 to qualify, but he lost to Larry Dixon in the first round. Bob won over a sixteen-car field at the OCIR Nitro Jam race on June 29. A 6.49 in the opening round defeated Gary Ritter; in round two, his 6.45 beat Bob Noice's 6.55, and in the semifinal, he ran 6.17/234.98 to beat Gary Cochran's 6.51/227. He faced Frank Bradley in the final, and Bradley was tough as he had won his semifinal race with a 5.97/230. Both fell off in the final, but Williams' 6.27/233.16 got the victory over Bradley's 6.50/223. The following week (July 6), he was at Irwindale for the NHRA Division Seven race. There a first-round 6.48/226.13 fell to Bruce Walker's 6.38/219.

Notes: Baca did not tour as much in '74 as he had in previous years. He did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals, but that was his only NHRA national event all year. He qualified #1 at the Sacramento Grand Opener in February with a 6.08. The time held for Low ET, but Dennis failed to reach the finals. He was back at Sacramento for another Top Fuel race in March, but again failed in his bid to reach the final. His next race was the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont. There he was running strong. A 6.39 qualified him #5 in the sixteen-car field and a first-round 6.27/213.27 advanced when Gerry Glenn shut off. In round two his 6.21/231.36 beat Dan Richins and another 6.21/234 in the semifinals stopped James Warren who lost an engine at half-track. This put Baca into the final against Don Garlits. Both had smoky runs in the final, but Garlits' 6.86/231 nipped Baca's 6.87/225.56. He did not race at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Pomona, but he was at the second Division 7 race held at Sacramento. His 6.25 qualified #4 in the twelve car field. But in round one, his dragster broke, handing the win to Don Durbin. Early in July, he faced off against James Warren in a best of three match race at Fremont. Unfortunately, this was not Baca's day as he lost all three races. A couple of days later, he was at Irwindale for another NHRA Division 7 race. Frank Bradley's 6.42/213 beat his 6.64/226.13 in round one. He then had a rematch against Warren at OCIR. James won the first race, but then Baca's 6.25/231.36 won the second. The tiebreaker for the victory saw Warren take it with a 6.06/217 over Dennis' 6.35/233.76. The Top Fuel teams returned to OCIR for the PDA Championships on July 26. There were 56 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car show. Baca qualified and then out drove a sleepy Bradley in the first round, where Dennis ran 6.38/223.32 over Frank's 6.34/230. In round two, Rance McDaniel thought that it was time to show just how powerful his Chevy was and he laid down a 6.01 (Low ET) to beat Baca's 6.36.

Notes: Won Division 5 in 1974. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 233.12 at Pomona Winters 2/74. Ran 6.38 at KCIR. | Mark qualified #1 at Thunder Valley for the NHRA Division 5 Opener with a 6.44 (Low ET). He beat Howdy Williams (no relation) in the first round, with a 6.55/221.12 (Top Speed). In the semifinals he ran an easy solo when Dale Wilch's Chevy broke. He met Mike Wagoner in the final and it was sure to be close, but Mark broke a blower belt and Wagoner ran 7.05 for the victory. Mark was determined to make up for it at the next Division 5 race at Minnesota Dragways. He got an easy solo in the first round, when Jack Mitchell lost fire on the line and in the semifinals, Bob Struksnes blew his engine and Mark advanced to the final against low qualifier, John Wiebe. Mark hadn't made a hard run in eliminations and in the final his 6.97/208.89 lost to Wiebe's 6.44/229. At the third NHRA Division 5 race, Mark lost to Wagoner in the first round, when he broke a rod and shut off. He was at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race where he lasted until round two before he lost to the eventual winner Terry Capp's 6.37 with a 6.57. He failed to qualify at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. The following week (September 9), he was at Denver for the NHRA Division 5 Final. A first-round 6.87/199.54 advanced when Lee Beard fouled, but in the semifinals, his 6.66/215.82 lost to Bruce Jarrett's 6.55/216. 6.32 229 1974 NHRA US Nationals.

Notes: The team qualified #9 at Pomona with a 6.089/233.70. They lost to James Warren in round one, 6.01/230 to an off pace 7.05/177. They qualified #15 at Gainesville with a 6.473/215.82 and took an upset win over Jeb Allen in round one, 6.381/221.67 to 6.56/217. Opponent John Wiebe did not show for round two, so Jim got another win, rolling through at 9.22/75. The dream ended in round three, as Gary Beck ran 6.66/174 to defeat Jim's 15-second shut-off run. That was the team's final NHRA national event of the year. They were at Indianapolis in April for the NHRA Division Three opener. A 6.35 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, Jim fouled against Jim Walther in the opening round. In May, they were at Edgewater Park for a UDRA Circuit race. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.51/195.22 qualified #3. But Jim was unable to run in eliminations and was replaced by Frank Hawley. The team entered NHRA Indianapolis but did not show. They also ran 6.11 at Beech Bend. AKA Fighting Irish.

In round one, he ran 6.220/229.00 to defeat Billy Campbell at 6.31/217. He coasted to a 7.22 win in round two after Frank Bradley could not start. Eventual winner Marvin Graham finally ended Jim's day in round three, 6.08/232 to 6.276/231.95. Photo from the 1975 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Notes: Here's a nice shot of Pat Dakin in G. L. Rupp's car losing a motor during Saturday afternoon qualifying at the 1974 Summernationals. This car was one of the nicest-looking dragsters of its day. Simple but effective graphics. Also, note those enclosed front wheel tubs. Although a neat idea while stationary, they were rudders at speed. If you had to correct and turn the wheel, they would fight you big time, ultimately sending you further out of shape. - Peter Kumble. (Note: The wheel pants having a rudder effect is generally accepted, but many notable top fuel drivers dispute this. Bp). | Ran 6.29 at Indy, 6.06 at Pomona, 6.40 at Gainesville, 6.26 at Englishtown, 6.33 at Indy. Dakin and partner G. L. Rupp had one of the stronger-running Donovan-powered cars at this time. | At Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, Pat qualified #6 with a 6.06/233.16. A first-round 6.07/219.51 beat Gaines Markley, and in round two, he advanced with an easy 6.57/191.48 when Don Garlits broke. Unfortunately, he lost to a strong 5.84 Low ET of the meet blast by Gary Beck in the semifinals. The team was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March, and they qualified #12. In the first round, Dakin's 6.40 lost to Mike Wagoner's 6.39. Pat won the Easter Bunny Top Fuel Open at Bowling Green, Kentucky. On March 31, they were in Charlotte for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was a 1/8-mile track. Dakin made it into the final by beating Tom Raley in the first round, when both ran 4.39, Pat at 161.87. In the semifinals, a 4.49 beat Marvin Schwartz, but in the final, he lost to Dale Funk. Dakin qualified #1 in the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 6.56/189.47. He then set Top Speed of the meet with a 225.55, but he lost before the finals. Indianapolis hosted the first NHRA Division 3 race, and a 6.29 qualified the team #3. Dakin fouled in the first round against Jim Bucher. They were a little off at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, only qualifying #14 in the field. But Dakin was up to the task, pulling a holeshot 6.40/204.54 to beat Billy Campbell's quicker 6.34/225 in the first round. He did it again in round two, running 6.37/226.70 to beat Bill Pryor's 6.34/192. Unfortunately, they hurt some parts and were unable to run in the semifinal and Pryor was reinstated.

Unfortunately, a first-round 6.26/229.00 failed to get past Gary Beck's 6.15/231. He went to Pomona, but failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Division 3 Opener, Dick's 6.37 qualified #5 in the eight-car field forcing him to run low qualifier, Billy Campbell in the first round. In that race, Campbell’s 6.18/222 got the win light over his 6.40/223.88. The NHRA Springnationals saw a 6.31 qualify him in the #12 spot in the show, but a first-round 6.37/224.43 lose to Herm Petersen's 6.30/227. Dick's next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He led qualifying on Friday with a 6.23/233.16, but when qualifying ended, the time held for the #4 spot in the field. Things didn't go to well in round one, however, as he smoked the tires to 6.51/208.81 that lost to Pat Dakin's 6.26/227. A week later (July 21) he won the Beech Bend All-American race. There he beat Flip Schofield in the final. 6.31 223.88 1974 NHRA US Nationals.

Notes: Jim was a Chevy supporter until the end. After Top Gas ended as a class, he went hard to make a Chevy Rat motor competitive in T/F. Many other Chevy teams owed a lot to Bucher as he paved the way for them. He started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the bump with a 6.171/231.95. His was the only Chevy-powered car to qualify. Unfortunately, the engine died on the line against John Wiebe in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals (times not reported). Jim qualified #1 for the eight-car field at Charlotte Speedway for the 1/8 Mile IHRA Southern Nationals with a 4.39/176.12 (Top Speed). An opening round 4.18/175.09 was good enough for Low ET while beating Bob Pennington. In the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Dale Funk. In April, the NHRA Division 3 Opener was held at Indianapolis, and Jim qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.48. Pat Dakin fouled against him in round one, and Bucher advanced into the semifinals, where he smoked the tires and lost to Billy Campbell. Early in May, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. It was another eight-car show, and his 6.28/228.42 got him the #2 spot in the field. In round one, he improved slightly with a 6.27/220.58 to take out Dale Thierer's 6.49/211, but he broke on the run and could not return for the semifinals. He traveled to Canada the following week (May 19) for the second NHRA Division 1 race. He made the show, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Gary Beck. As usual, he was the only Chevy to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.250/229.00 qualified #7. Bob Struksnes shut off in the opening round against him. Hee dodged a bulletin round two when his 6.466/225.00 got around Dave Settles' 6.509/230.76 in the "Candies and Hughes" machine. His run ended in the semifinals, where Carl Olson's 6.18/228 beat his 6.36/208.33. Jim's next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Thirty-five cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Bucher's Chevy got the #15 spot. A first-round 6.50/220.04 beat Don Souter's 6.70/215, but he smoked the tires and shut off against Jim Murphy in round two. He was runner-up to Wiebe at a Top Fuel show at Martin, Michigan. Two Chevy-powered entries made the field at the NHRA Summernationals, and surprisingly, Bucher was not the quickest of the two. That honor fell to Don Powell (#9). Jim's 6.489/230.17 qualified #15. Both went down in the first round. Bucher had problems and slowed to 7.28/172.74 in a loss to Herm Petersen's 6.34/225. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where, once again, he was the only bow-tie campaigner to qualify. His 6.351/230.76 got him the #7 spot in the show. He beat Flip Schofield's 6.42/218 in the first round, with a 6.325/230.17 and a round two 6.53/200.44 advanced when Dakin lost an engine. But once again, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut down to a 10.87 loss to Beck's 6.28. Things looked really good at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where 39 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Jim showed his strength as a 6.16 qualified #5. It was interesting to note that he out-qualified all the Donovan-powered cars. In round one, the rear end in the car let him down as it broke on the line, advancing Ron Correnti. His next stop was at New York National for the ill-fated PRO race in August. His 6.24/221.66 qualified #10 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he improved to 6.11/227.27 to beat John Austin, whose 'chute released early. A second-round 6.05/233 beat Souter's 6.40/207, and a third-round 6.09/229.00 beat Ted Wolf in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. The race was run poorly, and in round four (yes, round four, not the semifinals), he faced Wolf again. This time, Bucher had problems and shut down early. He was at Maple Grove for its All-American Pro Series race shortly after. This was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, his 6.22/221.13 advanced when Wolf lost fire. In round two, he fouled away a 6.39/208.81 against Sarge Arciero in the "Jade Grenade." At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Jim qualified #13 with a 6.171/230.76, but an even better 6.164/232.55 in the opening round fell to Dwight Salisbury's incredible holeshot and a 6.270/215.31. That was Jim's final NHRA event of the 1974 season. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida.

Notes: This team ran hard; it didn't matter where or what sanctioning body ran the event; they were there to race. The team returned from running the car in Australia in January. Schofield had become the first driver to run a "six" on their soil. His best had been 6.87/221. On June 1, they were at Blaney, SC, for the NHRA Division 2 race. Schofield soloed in the opening round when Jim Hundley lost fire, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Don Powell's Chevy-powered machine. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.28 qualified #10, but Flip had trouble in the first round, against eventual winner Gary Beck and shut off. The following week (June 16) saw the team at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. They qualified #11, and in the first round, the car lost fire against Jim Murphy. The next stop was at Indiana for NHRA's 1/8 mile drags, and while Flip didn't reach the final, he set Low ET at 4.15. In July, the team got a runner-up finish to Dick LaHaie at the All-American Drag Open at Beech Bend. The next stop was at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. A 6.43/219.51 qualified #15, and in round one, Flip's 6.42/218.44 lost to Jim Bucher's 6.32/230. Then came the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, where they qualified #15. This time a 6.33 got the spot. But another 6.33 in the first round, lost to John Austin's 6.27. The ill-fated PRO National Challenge race at New York had Schofield qualify #24 in the 32 car field with a 6.45/198.22. But the team continued to have problems getting past the first-round at major events. This time Flip fouled against Jeb Allen. 6.65/197.36 NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/01/74 Best NHRA national event times were the 6.288/223.32 at Columbus. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Flip ran 6.30 at Beech Bend and 6.40 at Indy. Where did the team run 6.01/232.55? Notes: Marvin was virtually unknown when he entered the national scene in 1974. He switched to a Donovan power plant and with the help of his pal Mike Kuhl, was able to start running very strong. His first NHRA national event was in 1974 at Englishtown, NJ, where he promptly qualified the car at 6.367/229. Although the car was running strong with Kuhl's help, Marvin still had to be coaxed into participating at the NHRA US Nationals in Indy by friends/competitors Carl Olson and Kuhl. The two went so far as to carry the engine parts Marvin needed from California to Tulsa on their way to Indy and made sure the engine was built in time for Marvin to get there. As a result of this push, Marvin was able to notch his first-ever National event win. His best NHRA national event times of 6.081/232.55 came at Indy 1974, where he killed 'em with consistency on race day over 32 cars. Later that year, he won the AHRA World Finals and decided to go full-time racing. | He was at Green Valley for the rain postponed AHRA Grand American on May 8. Marvin qualified #5 and lasted until round two before losing to eventual winner Don Garlits. He was one of 35 cars attempting to qualify at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Marvin made the show, qualifying #9 and setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Clayton Harris. Graham's 6.36/228.42 beat Harris' off-pace 6.72/196 in their race, but in round two, a 6.34/227.27 lost to eventual winner Dale Funk's 6.24/230. He qualified #8 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.36/229.59. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.61/214.79 lost to Harris, who got some revenge from Bristol with a 6.34/229. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis, Marvin's 6.60 qualified #5. He had problems in the first round, and slowed to a 7.16 loss to John Austin's 6.55. Marvin was at Wichita for the third NHRA Division 5 race where he set Low ET at 6.30 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. He beat Junior Kaiser in the first round, with a 6.65/211.76 and in the semifinals, he eased it through when Mike Wagoner fouled. He faced John Wiebe in the final, but he smoked the tires and shut off to 10.02 in a runner-up finish to Wiebe's 6.57.

Notes: Orange County run made Frank the 16th and final member of the Cragar Five Second Club. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | Frank started his season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals in January He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.27/217.39. Another 6.27 at 220.58 advanced in the opening round and a holeshot 6.20/225.00 beat Jerry Ruth's 6.16/225 in round two. His run came to an end in the semifinals where Don Garlits unleashed Low ET and Top Speed (5.78/247) to stop Bradley's advance. He went to Pomona the following week for the NHRA Winternationals where his 6.12/220.04 qualified #11. Dwight Hughes fouled against him in round one, and Bradley took an easy 7.25/142.63 ride into round two. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.43/215.82 lost to Bob Noice’s 6.30/201. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Frank’s 6.16/225.00 qualified #5 in the 32 car field. He won his first-round race easily and then took a close one from Randy Allison in round two where his 6.25/227.84 beat Randy's 6.27/230. He gave eventual winner Carl Olson his biggest scare in round three where Frank's 6.09/232 lost out to Olson's quick-leaving 6.10/217. At the end of March, he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. There he qualified #11, but he lost to James Warren in the opening round. A week later (April 6), it was Warren again who stopped him in the first round. This time at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race held there. Frank had run a 6.40 to qualify #9. That was pretty good considering that there were 42 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car show. His next stop was at Sacramento for the second NHRA Division 2 race. He had a great leave in his first-round race that saw his 6.19/228.43 beat Ron Attebury's quicker 6.10, but in round two he lost to the eventual winner Olson.

Notes: Photo from 1975 NHRA Springnationals. Also 6.08 at Pomona Winters 2/74. Won infamous PRO Race at New York National in August 1974. Ran 6.38 at Gainesville, 6.38 at Columbus, 6.24 at Englishtown, 6.13 at Indy, and 6.06 at Ontario. Pictured car was actually John's second RE car. The 73 cars were built by Ed Mabry. | Wiebe was still Ed Donovan's 'test car.” Any new developments for the Donovan 417 were tried on John's car first. At the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Wiebe’s 6.08/230.17 qualified #8. There were actually four Donovan entries that outqualified him. In the opening round, Jim Bucher's Chevy broke on the line and a 7.03/197.36 advanced. In round two, John’s 6.27/226.70 lost to eventual winner Gary Beck's 5.90/223. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where his 6.38 qualified #11. He gave Don Garlits a driving lesson in the first round, where his 6.39/194.38 beat "Big Daddy's" quicker 6.28/232. But John was unable to run in round two as the engine was hurting and Jim Murphy soloed into the semifinals. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Grand Am Nationals. Wiebe qualified #3. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Garlits. He then went to Dragway 42 for another AHRA Grand American race. John beat Chris Karamesines in round one, and in the semifinals, Garlits fouled against him. He faced Paul Longenecker in the final and Paul's 6.36 gave John a runner-up finish. Early in June he was at Spokane for the AHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #4 and lasted until the semi's where Beck's 6.15/226 beat his 6.47/196.06. At Columbus, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.38. Wiebe's holeshot 6.62 in the first round, beat Ronnie Martin's quicker 6.59. In round two he faced fellow Donovan campaigner Herm Petersen. John’s 6.53 beat Herm's 6.58. Unfortunately, John came up against Beck in the semifinals, and Beck set Low ET with a 5.98/245 to stop Wiebe's early shut-off 6.55/194.38. He got a win over an eight-car field at Martin, Michigan. He stopped Bucher's Chevy in the final and had earlier set a 6.09 track record. He opened up the month of July with another win at Kansas City for the AHRA Drag Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.22/218.44 behind Garlits' 6.08/238. These two would work their way into the final. A first-round 6.24/222.22 beat Jerry Wilson and a semifinal 6.20 beat Karamesines. Garlits had run 6.12 and 6.17 to reach the final so he had the edge. But in the final, both slowed and John's 6.41 got him the victory over Garlits' 6.61. Wiebe had the quickest Donovan qualifier at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. His 6.30/204.54 got him the #6 spot. He improved to 6.25/216.86 in the first round, over Grant Stoms' 6.36/224. But an off-pace 6.45/225.56 in round two lost to Dave Settles' 6.17/238 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He did not race at the NHRA Division 5 Opener, but he was at the second Division 5 race held at Minnesota. Wiebe dominated the show. He led qualifying with a 6.35 (Low ET). He ran 6.43/217.39 and 6.44/205.01 to reach the final. A final round 6.44/229.59 (Top Speed) got the victory over Mark Williams' 6.97/208. He did not make the trip up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, choosing to stay closer to home and run the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis that was being run the same weekend (August 4). Things didn't go so well as he qualified last in the eight-car show and in the first round, the car refused to fire, giving opponent Bill Pryor an easy run into the semifinals. John then went to Wichita for the third Division 5 race. He won again, but this time it wasn't so easy. Marvin Graham qualified #1 and had worked his way into the final to meet with Wiebe. Marvin smoked the tires and John's 6.57/207.84 got the win. His next stop was at New York International for the PRO National Challenge race. The race was poorly managed, but that didn’t take away from John's victory there. He deserved it. There were 38 cars attempting to qualify for the 32 car field and Wiebe got the pole with a 6.12/206.32. He ran his first ever "five" in the first round, where a 5.96/217.38 beat Pryor's engine blowing 6.25/182. A second round 6.05/210.28 beat Stoms' 6.08/232 and in the third round, he got a solo and still legged it to a 6.06. John got yet another solo in round four, and his 6.48/219.50 advanced into the final. He was to run Bruce Walker, but Walker's car lost fire on the line and Wiebe soloed yet again for the win. Another final round showing came at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. John qualified #4 with a 6.58 and he made runs of 6.69/198.23, 6.38/208.81, and 6.29/225.00 over Frank Bradley's 6.44/223 in the semifinals. In the final he faced Canadian Terry Capp and the two had a great race, but Capp's 6.32/234 beat John's close 6.35/229.00.

Notes: 1974 Popular Hot Rodding Magazine Championships Top Fuel winner. Ran 6.12/228.42 to win the race. Ran 6.12 at Indy and 6.38 at Gainesville. This team had a really great season in '74. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Billy qualified #10, but a first-round 6.42 lost to eventual winner Dave Settles' 6.29 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Another first-round loss came at the IHRA Southern Nationals where he lost to Dale Funk who would also go on to win. Things went better at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. There Campbell qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.13 (Low ET) at 222.77. An opening round 6.18/222.22 took out Dick LaHaie's 6.40/223. In the semifinals, Jim Bucher smoked the tires with his Chevy powered car and Billy's 6.18/218.97 advanced into the final. Unfortunately, the dragster broke and Paul Longenecker eased to the victory with an 8.91. It was a heartbreaker for the team as they were running a tenth better than Longenecker. The next stop for the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. An easy 6.95/213.77 qualified #5 in the eight-car field and once again Billy found himself in the final. Also, once again the car let him down as it lost fire giving final round opponent, Jim Hundley a solo for the win. Things didn't go very well at Columbus where the team failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. And at the IHRA Springnationals, they qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field, but Campbell was caught napping in the first round, where his 6.34/225.56 lost to Pat Dakin's 6.40/204. He had another runner-up finish at the NHRA 1/8 mile drags at Kentucky where a final round 4.39 finished second to Dale Funk's 4.18. A win finally came on July 28 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City. There Campbell set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.05 (track record) at 237.46. A final round 6.06 beat Dick Rosberg. It was then off to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Campbell qualified #3 with a 6.50, but he picked up considerably in the first round, where his 6.24/225.01 dropped Don Souter's 6.50/229 from the program. A semifinal 6.43 beat a tire smoking Funk and put him into the final against Bill Pryor. The two had a good race, but Pryor's 6.30/225 got the victory over Campbell's 6.46/193.14. Then came the big win over a sixteen-car field at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The team only qualified #8 with a 6.27, but that was pretty good considering that there were 39 cars attempting to make the show. He picked up to 6.21 in the opening round to drop Chuck Kurzawa and a second round 6.30 advanced when Don Garlits had his transmission break just off the line. In the semifinals, the team stepped it up some more running 6.11/236.22 to eliminate Jeb Allen's 6.22/230. In the final, Campbell faced Settles and another strong run of 6.12/228.42 got the job done over Dave's 6.29/221. New York National was the next stop for the PRO National Challenge race. Campbell’s 6.25/225.00 qualified #11, but a sleepy 6.35227.82 lost to Gary Ritter’s 6.41/227 in the first round. The team was probably lucky to lose early before the race fell to pieces. Bowling Green held a Pre-Nationals warm-up race and the "Golddigger" was there. A 6.35/218.97 qualified #2 in the eight-car field and he beat John Hilton and John McNew (with a 6.42) to reach the final. In the final he smoked the tires and lost to Ritter's 6.21/230.

Notes: Chuck was the first alternate at NHRA Gainesville (times unavailable but slower than 6.634). He was the second alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.359/217.85. At NHRA Englishtown, Chuck was the #1 qualifier and Low ET of the Meet at 6.148/231.95. He beat Don Powell's tough Chevy in round one, 6.279/227.27 to 6.299/227.27, and he followed that with a win over Gary Beck in round two, 6.392/227.27 to 6.613/225.56. Eventual winner Dale Funk got the best of Chuck in the semis, however, 6.234/233.76 to 6.657/184.42. Chuck qualified #31 at Indy with a 6.296/230.17. He beat Jim Walther in round one, 6.348/220.04 to 8.369/102.15. John Wiebe beat him in round two, 6.159/229.00 to a troubled 7.586/118.89. Chuck also ran 6.17 at Tri-City.

Notes: Powell was determined to show that a Chevy could still compete in Top Fuel competition. He did really well in '74. At the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins, he won the event. A first-round 6.66 beat James Warren (not the Division 7 Warren), and in round two, Don set Low ET of the meet with a 6.30/225 to beat John Austin's 6.36/231 in the "Hot Tuna" car. In the final, he ran 6.35/225.56 to beat low qualifier Jim Hundley's 6.52/215. He proved it was no fluke when he won the Second Division 2 race at Suffolk as well. Powell set Top Speed in the first round, when his 6.39/226.50 beat Bob Pennington, while in the semifinals, his 6.24 was good for Low ET while stopping Austin. In the final, another 6.24 at 225 grabbed the win over Larry Bucher's 6.32/177. The third Division 2 race was held at Blaney. Once again, the Chevy-powered car would find its way into the final. Eliminations started with Don's 6.68/215.30 beating Ed Horton while a 6.41/225.00 (Top Speed) beat Flip Schofield. Unfortunately, his final round 6.49/220 had to settle for runner-up to Paul Longenecker's 6.33/208. With these strong performances, Don won Division 2 in 1974. Notes: Part of a growing number of Chevy-powered Top Fuelers in the mid-'70s. Howard was at Pomona but was the ninth alternate (times not reported but not quicker then 6.30). He qualified for the Bakersfield March Meet but lost in round one. Haight was at Irwindale's T-Shirt Night event in May, but a first-round 6.73/218.44 lost to Don Enriquez's 6.56/213. The team ran at Indy as shown but was a third alternate DNQ at 6.320/231.36. That was their last NHRA national event of the year. Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Notes: Don Steele was a radio personality. The Howards Cams Rat. Ran 6.14/204.54 and 6.21/193.96 at PRO NY National in August 1974. Ran 6.07 at Sacramento. | Larry started the '74 season at Irwindale for the Grand Premiere race. There was no qualifying as the positions were drawn from a hat. All eight-cars in the field were members of Cragar's Five Second Club. Larry drew Don Moody in his first-round race and Moody fouled, advancing Dixon into the semifinal. In his semifinal race, he ran Tommy Ivo, who smoked the tires to a 7.74 and Larry won with a 6.65/193.96. In the final, he was up against the "Old Man," Don Garlits. Larry's Chevy lost a blower on the line and Garlits took the victory with a 6.38/226. The team did not qualify at the Pomona Winternationals, but Larry ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #15 in the 32 car field with a 6.37. An opening round 6.51 beat Bob Williams' 6.62 and he made an easy pass in round two when Jeb Allen fouled. In round three, the Chevy finally met its match as he lost to Gary Beck. He disappeared from the qualifying lists for the early part of the year as the team was "dialing in" their Chevy powerplant and they failed to qualify at quite a few shows, but the team made the field at the OCIR Nitro Jam held at the end of June. Dixon beat Gary Hazen's 6.66 in the first round, with a 6.47 and in round two, a quick-leaving 6.40/218.97 beat James Warren's 6.36/229. Unfortunately, he lost to Frank Bradley's 5.97 in the semifinals. The following week (July 6), he was back at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. An opening round 6.38/205.47 beat Gary Ritter's 6.43/219, but in the second round, Leland Kolb's 6.32/225 stopped his 6.39/207.85. The team had a great NHRA Indy event. They qualified #17 at 6.193/215.31, then got a holeshot win in round one, at 6.205/214.79 over Jerry Ruth's 6.144/234.37. Larry then defeated Sarge Arciero, 6.179/215.82 to a shut off 8.67 at 1999. Gaines Markley finally ended the Chevy’s day in round three, 6.167/237.46 to 6.272/209.30. The team qualified #8 at the World Finals at 6.011/226.70, but nemesis Markley got them in the first round, 6.08/220 to 6.30/198.

Notes: Finished in NHRA Top Ten 1974. Dangerous Dan Ferguson was his crew chief. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Ran 6.18 at Beeline, 6.33 at Gainesville, 6.21 at Columbus, and 6.38 at Englishtown. | The Donovan powered Top Fuel dragsters ran really well in '72 and '73, but by '74 the late model Hemi was really taking over in the fuel ranks. Wagoner opened up the season by winning the first big event, the AHRA Winternationals, with his Donovan powered car. He qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.23/226.70 (quickest Donovan in the field), but in the first round, his off-pace 6.46/226.07 lost to Gaines Markley's 6.46/214. Lucky for Mike, Markley broke on the run and was unable to run in his round two race, so Wagoner got back in on the "break rule." He made good on his second chance by stopping low qualifier Pete Kalb in round two with a 6.21/228.42, and a solo 6.20/230.76 advanced to the final when Gary Beck lost a blower belt on the line. He faced Don Garlits in the final and "Big Daddy" looked like he was tough to beat as he had set Low ET and Top Speed in his semifinal win with a 5.78/247. Sometimes a little of luck goes a long way as in the final Garlits lost his brakes and was unable to stage so Mike got to run a single for the win. He still made a strong 6.18/226.70 pass for the victory. He also had the quickest Donovan at the NHRA Gatornationals where he qualified #5 with a 6.33. He beat Pat Dakin in the first round, before losing a 6.52 decision to eventual winner Dave Settles' 6.22 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Mike was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified #5 with a 6.95/213.77 in the eight-car field. He failed to reach the finals. Also in May, he was runner-up to Chip Woodall at the Lakeland National Open. There, his final round 6.47/197.46 lost to Chip's 6.40/218. The next stop was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He didn't have the quickest Donovan in the show, but his 6.21 qualified #5. He beat Paul Longenecker's 6.57 in the opening round with a 6.34, but he lost to Carl Olson in round two. This was followed by a victory at the NHRA 1/8 Mile Drags at Indiana. There a final round 4.37/169.81 beat R.J. Thomas. Earlier, Wagoner had set Top Speed at 178.92. Mike was at Thunder Valley in Marion, SD, for the NHRA Division 5 Opener. He beat the Kaiser Brothers in the first round, with a 6.71/215.30 and in the semifinals his 6.56/216.34 beat Bob Struksnes. This put him into the final against Mark Williams. Mike got the victory with an easy 7.05/149.50 when Mark lost a blower belt. At the third NHRA Division 5 event held at Wichita, Kansas, Mike beat Mark Williams in the first round, before fouling away a 6.64/217 in the semifinals against Marvin Graham. He qualified #1 with a 6.49 at the NHRA Division 4 final at Riverside, but a blower-popping 6.55/214.79 lost to Clayton Harris' 6.66/204 in the first round. Formerly listed 5.975/245.23, but we need confirmation of those numbers. Do you have that info? Best NHRA national event times were the 6.213 at Columbus and 228.42 at Gainesville.

Notes: Bruce started his season at the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #15 with a 6.36/216.86. In the first round his 6.39/222.77 lost to Dominic Cardoza's 6.20/229. But Cardoza broke and was unable to run in round two so Bruce was reinstated on the "break rule." In round two, he ran a consistent 6.40/222.22, but lost to Gary Beck's 6.15/230. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his best of 6.20/230.76 failed to qualify. He was at Bakersfield for the March Meet where he ran 6.24 to qualify #9. In the first round, he ran 6.41, but lost to Dwight Hughes. Early in April he was at OCIR for an AHRA Grand American race. There were 42 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Bruce's 6.38 got him the #5 spot in the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Ritter in the opening round. Team ran 6.32 221.97 1974 NHRA US Nationals.

Notes: Ron ran 6.35/216.86 to qualify #14 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, both he and opponent John Wiebe ran 6.31, with Wiebe winning. But John had hurt his engine and could not make round two, and Attebury was reinstated. He faced Don Garlits in that second-round race and fouled, running a 6.38/198.23. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, but his best of 6.190/222.57 was only good for the first alternate. He got into the field when Tommy Ivo, who had already qualified, crashed on a subsequent qualifying pass and could not run. Unfortunately, Ron's first-round 6.25/230.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.21/233.16. He won the Sacramento Grand Opener in February, winning with a 6.37 in the final when James Warren broke. Ron ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he qualified #30 in the 32-car field and lost to Gary Hazen in the first round. The following week, he was back in Sacramento for an eight-car show. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.24. In the first round, he shut down to a 6.85/134 loss to Don Garlits' 6.12/214. He also lost in the opening round at Fremont on March 31 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. There, Dominic Cardoza stopped him. Attebury was one of 42 drivers trying to qualify in the sixteen-car field at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race held the first week of April. He failed to get into the show as the "bump" ended at 6.42. He was at the Third annual Irwindale T-shirt night race. It was a sixteen-car show, and his first-round 6.37/191.08 beat Gary Cochran's 6.44/222. But in round two, he fouled against eventual winner James Warren. The team ran 6.38/227.27 in a DNQ effort at the 1974 NHRA US Nationals (12th alternate). That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year.
