Notes: Endres started his '74 season at Suffolk for an eight-car show in March. His 6.80 advanced when Dale Thierer shut the "Sparkling Burgundy" car off on the line in the first round. His 6.84 fell to Sarge Arciero's 6.33 in the "Jade Grenade" in the semifinal. He was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro race. It was another eight-car field, and in the opening round, Hank's 6.72/191.89 beat Sarciero who smoked the tires to a 6.82/222.77 that almost overtook the "Nirvana" car. As fate would have it, the two lined up again in the semifinal when Thierer had blown his engine in the first round, while winning and could not return. Sarge was back into the show with the "break rule" in effect. This time the "Grenade's" 6.24/226 easily beat Endres' 6.67/201.34. But things took a turn again in the other semifinal race when Chuck Turner and Tom Raley totaled both their cars in a crash. Obviously, neither was able to make the final. So for the third time, the "Jade Grenade" and the "Nirvana" lined up for another race. This one for all the marbles. There was no stopping Arciero on this day as his 6.28/218 got the victory over Endres' 6.68/206.42 runner-up effort. On April 21, he was at Cecil County for its National Open. A quick-leaving 6.86 in the semifinal beat Charlie Greer's 6.79, but Hank had blown his engine on the run and could not run Thierer in the final. After a couple of runner-up finishes, it had to feel good when he won the New England Fuel and Gas Championships in May. Hank's final round 6.50 beat Sam Miller, driving Fred Forknor's car. He didn't have to wait very long before winning again. On May 11, he won the Dutch Classic at Maple Grove. In round one, his 6.35/223.88 defeated Larry Bucher's 6.37/221. In the semifinal, he had a great race that saw his 6.36/222.77 beat Thierer's 6.39/203. He faced Miller again in the final, and once again, Hank got the win, with his 6.45/221.13 topping Sam's 6.59/210. The following week (May 19), he was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the second NHRA Division One race. Unfortunately, he broke against Tony Ceraelo in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Shortly after that, he went back to Maple Grove for the third NHRA Division One race. Sixteen Top Fuel cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and Hank qualified on the "bump" with a 6.61. He really showed 'em in round one, where his 6.37/217.91 startled Gary Beck's 6.35/222. But Hank slowed to 6.59/209.79 in the semifinal that fell to Miller's 6.43/217. Former Dick LaHaie car. |

Notes: Sam was driving Fred Forkner's car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Thirty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and Miller qualified #5. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.38/223.77 lost to the meet's eventual winner Dale Funk's 6.25/216. The following weekend (June 22), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division One race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 6.48/190.67 defeated Roger Toth's quicker, but later 6.46/215 in the "Hemi-Hunter." In the semifinal, Hank Endres' 6.59/209 fell to Miller's 6.43/217.38. Sam broke, and Dale Thierer soloed for the victory in the final. |

Notes: Martin was one of the 32 Top Fuel drivers competing for a spot in the 32 car field at New York National for the PRO National Challenge race. His 6.25/222.76 qualified #12 but a tire-smoking 6.74/196.50 lost to Larry Bucher's 6.35 in the opening round. NOTE: Two Ron Martins were racing this year. I believe this was actually Ronnie Martin out of Metarie, LA, in the Robert Anderson car. We need to confirm. |

Notes: Ivo was at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race on January 12. There was no qualifying as all eight-cars running were members of the Cragar Five Second Club. Positions were drawn from a hat. Tom raced Gary Beck in the first round, and his 6.57/208 advanced when Gary got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, Ivo smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.74 loss to Larry Dixon's 6.65/193. He did not run at the AHRA Winternationals, but he made a big slash at the NHRA Winternationals. During qualifying, the car got sideways during a 6.05/209.30 run. It rolled hard and was thought to be completely destroyed. Everyone wondered if Ivo was going to be alright. He raised his hands and he was ok. He was not hurt in the crash at all, but while getting out of the wreckage he scratched his leg. Tommy stated that it was "the first time in 17 years of racing that he'd been on his head”. He also stated that his eyes were closed through most of it. The crash took place Saturday, near the end of qualifying and is time would have got him into the #5 spot in the show. First alternate, Ron Attebury took his place in the field. He was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.81/212.76. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Jim Hundley in the first round. Tommy was a match racer, he didn't care about the "big shows" as he made his money on the match race trail. His car was competitive and he could have easily qualified for most races, but he chose to that the "sure" money that the match race brought in. That being said, he went to Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals, and he failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show. One of his match races came in July at Gary, Indiana’s US 30. He faced Don Garlits and won the match with a best of 6.26. Anytime you beat Garlits at this time gave you reason to smile. He also attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. There were 39 cars attempting to make the sixteen-car field and his 6.41 ended up at the third alternate. He then went to New York for the PRO National Challenge race. A 6.49/222.22 qualified #29 in the 32 car field. An opening round 6.40 fell to Junior Kaiser's 6.24. | Tom crashed in a fiery rollover at Winternationals. He then rebuilt and raced two weeks later. Tom actually qualified on the run where he crashed! Photo from the 1974 PHR Championships, US 131 Dragway, Martin, Michigan. |

Notes: Herm had his new streamliner out for the first time at Irwindale in January. He made two easy passes before getting on it and running a 6.78/205. The car was a 6.300 fifth alternate (speed unavailable) at Pomona. Shortly after that, he went to Rocket City Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Don Garlits. He lost all three races, turning a 6.78/188.67 best. The track had not been used for two years, and the cold weather also kept the cars from getting any traction. Still, Garlits had run a best of 6.26/198 in their match. Because he was the defending race winner of the NHRA Gatornationals, all he had to do was make a pass to qualify. Petersen's 6.634/221.13 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He lost first-round to Carl Olson's holeshot-aided 6.730/186.72 to Herm's 6.637/218.44. Herm had realized before this that he had to switch back to a more conventional car. The beautiful Can-Am-inspired body looked great but was too heavy for the car to pull. Don Ewald and others have said that if the team had tried this with one of the powerful new 426 aluminum motors instead of the 392-based motor, it is possible the experiment would have worked. |

Notes: Ran 6.35 at PRO NY National on 8/74. | Larry was at Suffolk in April for the NHRA Division 2 race. It was an eight-car show, and he soloed in the first round, when R.S. Thomas lost fire. In the semifinals, his 6.60 beat Jim Hundley's 6.68 in the "Starrliner." This put him into the final against Don Powell's Chevy-powered car. Bucher ran a strong 6.32 in the final (at only 177.04), but he finished second best to Powell's 6.24. He also qualified for the NHRA Division 1 opener held the following weekend (May 5) at Englishtown, but the car broke, and he could not make the first-round call. On May 11, Bucher was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. In the first round, he and Hank Endres had a good battle with Hank's 6.35/223, nosing out Larry's 6.37/221.13 for the win. He was back at Maple Grove on June 22 for the Division 1 race. Sixteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and Bucher qualified #3. He even out-qualified Gary Beck, which in '74 was a huge deal. But in the opening round, Larry took a bit of a nap on the line, and his 6.47/214.28 lost to Dale Thierer's 6.49/209. |

Notes: White was at Fresno in March for its Winter Race of Champions. It was a sixteen-car show, and three Chevy-powered cars made the field. Surprisingly, Joe was the quickest at 6.20, putting him in the #2 spot behind James Warren's 6.14. He got lucky in round one, as he lost a blower belt but still advanced as Gary Ritter fouled. He lost to Dwight Hughes in round two. Who is partner Hicks? |

Notes: Jack qualified #1 for the eight-car field at Columbus on May 5 for the second NHRA Division Three race with a 6.52. He reached the final against Chuck Kurzawa, and despite setting Low ET with a 6.50/218.97, he lost to Chuck's quick-leaving 6.63/223. We have photos of the car from Gainesville 1974, but they do not appear on any qualifying or DNQ lists for NHRA national events this year. |

Notes: Bill was at OCIR on April 6 for the AHRA Grand American race. There were 42 cars trying to make the sixteen-car field and his 6.40 got him the #10 spot. Unfortunately, in the first round, he faced eventual winner Don Garlits and he sneezed a blower, giving Garlits an easy 6.47 win |

Notes: Doug was at Edgewater Park in May for a UDRA Circuit race. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.51/214.88 qualified #2 behind Pat Dakin's 6.43. In the first round, he soloed at 6.52/214.28 when Gary Dye shut down on the line with an oil leak. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, his car broke against Dakin. The team entered 1974 NHRA Indianapolis but did not show. |
