Notes: According to Joniec, he got a best 0f 9.38/146 with it by the end of '72. He got that time running the Boss 429 as he had run out of parts for the "cammer". |

Notes: A 1970 built Maverick Pro Stock built for NHRA only (somewhat successful car). Won Best Engineered Car award at the 1970 Gatornationals. - Sam Auxier Jr. website | Auxier qualified for NHRA's first Pro Stock race, the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona held on February 1. His 10.49/132.54 held for the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to Bill Bagshaw in the opening round. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 10.40. It took a 10.36 to make the show. On March 8, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match race against Dick Collins. Sam won their first race with a 10.51/132.00, but he fouled in the second race to even up the score. In the deciding race, Auxier won the match with another 10.51 at 130.05. He faced Bill Jenkins for a match race at Atco in early April. The "Grump" won all three on their races as Sam was not having a good day. He fouled in the first race, his 10.50/129.12 lost to Jenkins' 10.21/136 in the second race, and the car broke so he was unable to run Bill in the final race. Bill would have been hard to beat as he ran a solo 9.91/138 to claim the match race victory. Shortly after that, he was at Richmond for the Super Stock Unlimited circuit race. He won the race, running a 10.71/128.67 in the opening round over Tommy Cox. A semifinal 10.50/131.61 stopped Bob Beck's 10.57/127. In the final, he faced Collins and a 10.48/130.63 beat the Camaro's 10.55/132. The following week (April 19), he was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the first round. Sam was at Englishtown on July 5 for a NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. It was an eight-car show and in the opening round, his 10.37/131.57 beat George Weiler. In the semifinals, opponent George Wahlen got out of shape and Sam advanced with a 10.41/130.81. He faced the Camaro of Dick Collins in the final. The two had a good race, but the Camaro's 10.34/133 beat the Maverick's close 10.38/130.62. In the September 18 Drag Times issue, Sam had the car listed for sale with a 427 tunnel port for $6,500. Best NHRA times of 10.405 at Gainesville and 132.54 at Pomona Winters in 1970. |

Notes: Did Sam run these exact times in 1972 after running the same times in 1971? Auxier was driving his Mustang in May at Atco during a four-car show. He ran 10.07/137.82 to beat a motor blowing Bobby Yowell in his first race and another 10.07 at 136.98 beat Rich LaMont's Gremlin in the second race. In the third race, his 10.05/138.03 lost to Al Joniec's Maverick, which won with a 9.80/141. |

Notes: Qualified at Indy 1972 with a 9.734 then went quicker during eliminations. | Shortly after taking over the driving duties of Dyno’s Maverick, Dondero went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 9.44 and picked up to a first-round 9.43/145.63. In the semifinals, he ran another strong 9.46/145.39, but lost to Butch Leal's track record 9.40 at 146. Ken qualified #2 with a 9.461/144.69 at the Gatornationals. A first-round 9.51/143.08 beat Bobby Yowell's 9.71/141. In round two, a 9.57 beat Stuart McDade's 9.65. But in the semifinals, a 9.54/143.31 lost to Don Carlton's 9.55/143. He stopped off at Englishtown for an eight-car show, but after beating Carmen Rotonda in the first round, with a 9.66/142.63 it rained and the race was called off. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. At the USRT race at Capitol Raceway, Dondero qualified #6 with a 9.55. He ran a best of 9.52/144.95 before losing in round two. He ran a 9.58/142.85 best at the Super Stock Nationals, but lost early. A 9.62 qualified Ken #6 at the IHRA Summernationals and another 9.60 got him through round one, but he lost to his boss Don Nicholson in round two. At the US Nationals, a 9.73/140.84 qualified him #7. On September 10 in Toronto for the second annual All-Pro Nationals, Ken set a 9.56 track record at 145.16 while winning the event. - RH |

Notes: There were very few SOHC-powered Mavericks running in Pro Stock in '73. Of the few that were, this Earl Wade prepared one was the most successful. In May, Ken competed at the Irwindale Memorial Day Championships. In the opening round of competition, his 9.74/139.96 beat Dale Falk's 10.39/131. In the semifinals, his 9.73/140.18 lost to Larry Breaux's 9.55/142. He won the Woodburn Mini-Nationals. He had beaten Jim Baker and Don McLavey to win with a 9.79 best. Ken was at Sacramento on July 29 for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 9.78 qualified #2 behind Sonny Bryant's 9.61. He improved to 9.73 in the opening round over Baker's broken Camaro. In the semifinals, Hedman's 9.72 beat Roger Adsit's 9.80. A final round 9.78/139.54 beat Jack Manchester's 9.82/141. The following week (August 4), he was at Irwindale's T-Shirt Night race. This was another eight-car field, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bryant. Ken's 9.88/139.10 lost to the Camaro driver's 9.41/144. Shortly after that, Hedman was at Bonneville for the fourth NHRA Division Seven race. He got the "unlucky" #5 spot in qualifying again, and this time, Irv Beringhaus, who qualified #1, beat his 10.39/130.25 with a 9.84. |

Notes: Confirmed 9.933/137.82 at Indy 1972. Ran 9.79 at Atco 1972. Atco ad advertising match race with the Baldwin Super Camaro in March 72 claimed 9.72/141 times. Al beat Lee Edwards in a best of three match race at Atco. Shortly after that, he was at Cecil County, where he ran 9.70 twice and a 9.69. In August, he was at Maple Grove for its Pro Stock Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Rich Mirarcki. Joniec tried hard, but his 9.87/139.10 lost to Mirarcki's 9.68/139. According to Joniec, he got a best 0f 9.38/146 with it by the end of '72. He got that time running the Boss 429 as he had run out of parts for the "cammer." |

Notes: This car never ran Pro Stock and was only raced as a heads up match racer. Don raced the car for 6 months between April and September 1969. While researching the Dyno Don book, I found the quickest times for the Cougar were a 9.99 at 138 mph recorded during a match race at Thompson, Ohio in September. |

Notes: Don's 9.81/139.81 set both ends of the national record at Atco NJ WCS meet in the fall of '70. The car also had Low ET at Indy Nationals with 9.90. Qualified fourth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 10.013/139.10 (the quickest non-Chrysler). | Don had some teething problems at the AHRA Winternationals in Jan, where the car appeared, still in primer. He lost a rod in qualifying and fouled out against Dick Arons in the opening round. In February, for the NHRA Winternationals, Dyno's Maverick qualified at 10.47/128.95 but lost to Don Grotheer in the first round. At the big OCIR US Pro Stock Championships, Don qualified fifth with a 10.05. In the first round, his 10.00 beat the Wheatley Brothers Camaro. He beat Butch Leal in the second round, and in the semifinals, he cracked a cylinder head while winning. There was no time to repair, and he ran Bill Jenkins in the final with the cracked head. Jenkins got the victory with a 9.87/139 over "Dyno's" fouling 9.93/138.24. On February 22, he qualified second with a 10.12 at Irwindale for a Pro Stock race. He ran a best of 10.10/137.19 before meeting low qualifier Dick Landy in the final. A final round 10.29/135.90 took the win when Landy fouled away a 10.24. One advantage Don had with running the Ford SOHC engine was that he could rev the motor to 8,500 to 9,000 rpm to shift. The lightweight overhead cam engine made this possible where both the big block Chevys and the Mopar Hemis were shifting at around 8,000 rpm. At AHRA's second race of '70, Don ran a best of 10.12 and faced Ed Miller in the final, but a missed shift cost him the race. Also, in March at Rockingham for the third AHRA race, the Pro-Am, Don qualified with a 10.05/137.82 and advanced to the final with a best of 10.00 before losing to Ronnie Sox. A big win at the Northern Nationals at Fremont over Bill Bagshaw came next, along with Low ET honors at 10.04/138.46. At the Super Stock Nationals on May 10, Don was disqualified. On May 16 at the AHRA Frontier Grand Am, Don lost in the semifinal. A 10.25 was all Don could do in qualifying at the AHRA Springnationals, and he lost early. Intake manifold manufacturers were not interested in developing a manifold for this engine in Pro Stock racing because there were not many of them around. But Edelbrock came up with a new tunnel ram manifold for the SOHC, and at the NHRA Springnationals, Don's Cammer had one. He had been running a stock factory single plane manifold with two bolt-on risers before this. A 10.23 in qualifying and a first-round 10.14 didn't show much, but it was the first new development for the engine in a long time. He lost to Sox in round two. At the St. Louis 1/8 mile championships, Don qualified #1 with a 6.53, set Low ET at 6.46, and won the meet. Another big win came On July 1 at Capitol. Dyno won the meet over Ronnie Sox with outstanding times of 9.88, 9.87, and 9.86, all at 139.75 and a final 9.74/140.18. In July, for the NHRA Summernationals, Dyno qualified ninth with a 10.15. At AHRA's seventh race, the New England Grand Am, on August 2, Don qualified #1 at 10.03, set an AHRA mph record at 138.46, and set Low ET and Top Speed in winning the event with a 9.88/139.53 over Ronnie Sox. On August 23, at York for the AHRA Summernationals, Don reset the AHRA Pro Stock ET and speed record to 9.78/140.62. A win at the AHRA race at Bristol over Herb McCandless was next, and his 10.07/137.19 was good for Low ET and Top Speed. A 9.90/139.31 was good for Low ET and the number one qualifier at the US Nationals, but Arlen Vanke got him in round three. At the AHRA World Finals, he qualified #1 with a 10.06 and went on to a semifinal finish. Nicholson qualified fourth at the NHRA Supernationals with a 10.01/139.10 and went on to run a best of 9.96/139.96 before losing to Vanke in round three. Shortly after this, Don was at Fremont for a best of three match against Jenkins. By this time of the season, the Ford driver had quite a power advantage over his GM rivals." Dyno" won three straight with times of 9.71/137.75, 9.75/141.50, and 9.76/141.73. The closest the "Grump" could run to these times was a 9.92/138. After such a great season, the NHRA World Finals was somewhat a letdown to Don as he failed to qualify due to a blown engine. Because of this car, and only this car, NHRA considered banning the SOHC motor from Pro Stock competition, which went down unfavorably by track owners and promoters. Also, rumors swirled wildly about Dodge picking up Don for '71. The best NHRA national event times were the 9.900 Low ET at Indy (139.31) and the 139.96 at the Ontario Supernationals. |

Notes: Don was #5 qualifier at Indy 1971 at 9.691/141.06. AHRA record holder at 140.62 in January 1971. Ran 9.75 at York. | Nicholson continued to be Ford's strong hope in Pro Stock racing in '71, but as the season progressed other Ford drivers such as Wayne Gapp and Eddie Schartman also started cutting some numbers. Don started the year by winning the Lions AHRA Grand American in January with his "old" '70 Maverick. He qualified #2 with a 9.76 and a 9.83/139.96 (Top Speed) beat Bill Hielscher in the first round. Butch Leal was still driving his Camaro at this race and in round two he fell to Don's 9.81/139.81. In the semifinals, a 9.85/138.46 beat Don Grotheer's 'Cuda at 9.92/137. In the final, he came up against Bill Bagshaw in his "Red Light Bandit" Challenger. The two had a good race, but "Dyno's" 9.81/139.93 came out on top over Bill's 9.89/139. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he debuted his new '71 car. Nicholson lost in round two to John Petrie. He did better the following week at OCIR's Pro Stock Championships. He ran a best of 9.76/141 in beating Don Carlton who was driving for Billy Stepp. Don was a little embarrassed when after doing a burnout, he backed into Don Grotheer's 'Cuda. The Maverick was fine, but the "Cuda's grill was bent up. He was runner-up for the second consecutive year when he faced Grotheer in the final. Grotheer got the last laugh as his 9.78/141 got the win when something broke in the Maverick's driveline. Don had some bad luck at AHRA's Winternationals at Beeline when he ran 10.12 in qualifying, but he broke a flywheel and was unable to run in eliminations. Nicholson had the only Ford that qualified at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.82/142.18, but he lost to Arlen Vanke's 9.70/141 in the first round, with a fouling 9.88/138.88. A big win came at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Twenty-eight-cars made the first-round and 'Dyno's" 9.85/141.28 advanced past round one. In round two, a 9.84/141.06 beat Bob Riffle in his new Demon while an odd-lot single in round three at 9.75/141.28 set Low ET of the meet. He had a close race against Mike Fons in the semifinals where his 9.83/141.06 prevailed over Mike's 9.87/138. In the final he came up against Bill Jenkins. It was rare not to see a Mopar in a Pro Stock final in '71 so this was great for the fans. Don got the win running a 9.76/141.06 over "Grumpy's" 9.97/139. He was at Greensboro on May 23 for a best of three match race against Ronnie Sox, but it was not his day as he lost three straight. That was better than what happened at Cornhusker where once again he faced Sox in a best of three, but on a losing 10.08/134.73 in the first round, he spun a main bearing on his "Cammer" and was done for the day. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals in June. It featured a 32 car field and Nicholson was the quickest non-Chrysler car in #7 with a 9.85. He picked up to a 9.83 in the first round, to drop Petrie and in round two, an improving 9.77 beat Ken Dondero's 9.96. This left Don's Ford stacked up against seven Mopars going into round three. Nicholson showed he could drive by slapping a slight holeshot on Fons and winning with a 9.82 over Mike's 9.81 in the "Rod Shop" car. Score was now Mopars 3, Ford 1. In the semifinals, Don chalked up another win, running 9.77 over Grotheer's 9.87. This put him in the final against Sox. It was another good race, but Don's 9.78/140.40 finished second best to Sox's 9.70/143. Cecil County held its All-American Pro Stock Championships soon after and Nicholson was strong. He ran a track record 9.52 in the first round, and a 9.53 in the semifinal put him into the final against Jenkins again. Once again Don got the win, running a 9.57 for the title. During this time, "Dyno" was running Match Races all over the country. This is where he made most of his income. He was at Great Meadows for a four-car show where he reset the track record to 9.65 at 141 in the first round, while beating Sox's 9.81/141. But in round two, more problems in the way of a blown engine kept him from making any more runs. Early in July, he faced off against Sox in a best of three at Atco. Sox won the match, but Don made it tough. Ronnie won the first race with a 9.49/144 over Don's 9.68/142.18. The Ford came back to take the second race with a 9.52/143.54 over Sox's 9.50/143, but a final run of 9.52/144 won the match for Sox when "Dyno" fouled away a 9.61/143.08. Just before the NHRA Summernationals, the Maverick was parked in Jenkins garage and Bill was helping Don adjust the carbs. It must have paid off as Don got Ford its first NHRA National event win. Don even thanked Bill in his after race thank you in National Dragster. The race was run at Englishtown and as per usual, Nicholson was the quickest non-Chrysler qualifier at #5 with a 9.66. He stayed consistent, running 9.68 in round one, over Ron Hutter, a 9.64 in round two over Jenkins' 9.86, and a big win in round three where his 9.66 beat low qualifier Don Carlton's 9.67 in a close one. In the semifinals, he slowed to 9.72/140, but it was still enough to beat Petrie's 9.77/141. In the final, he met up with Fons. Don got the victory with his best run of the event, a 9.63/141.73 over Mike's 9.68/142. Rumor had it that even Chrysler reps were happy with the Ford win as they were worried that NHRA would try to even the playing field for '72. Another final round showing came at the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. He ran times of 9.77/140.62, 9.81/139.96, and 9.71/141.73 to make the final. But as good as these times were, he was about a tenth off of the "Mopar Missile's" times. So, in the final, he gambled on the tree and lost. Carlton went on to win with a 9.62/142. Nicholson won IHRA's Canadian-American race at Union Grove. In the final he faced another Ford, Ed Schartman's Comet. Don won with a 9.3 time over Ed's 9.8. Another win came on August 29 when he won the AHRA Grandnationals. There his final round victim was Joe Satmary who Don beat with a 9.77/141.73. He was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. His 9.69 qualified #5, but in the first round, he lost second gear and the race to Wally Booth. Shortly after this, American Motors was looking for drivers for their new Pro Stock program. A contract was offered to Nicholson, but he declined. |
