Notes: Rick Howard photo. Also ran 9.84 at St. Louis. | Jim qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 10.092/138.24. He had the third quickest Chevy in the 32 car field behind Ron Hutter and Bill Jenkins. He lasted until round two before losing to Arlen Vanke. Shortly after that, he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. This was a sixteen-car field and five Camaros made the field with Jim's 10.16 being the slowest (#15). But he picked up to 10.06/136.98 in the first round, to beat Dick Oldfield who fouled away a 9.96/140 in the "Motown Missile.” Another strong run of 10.07/137.19 beat Lee Smith's quicker 10.02/138 in round two and going into the semifinals, Hayter had the only Chevy left in the field. But he slowed to 10.12/137.67 and lost to eventual winner Vanke’s 10.01/140. In Mid-March, he joined the Fred Gibb racing team. He was the strongest of the four Chevy qualifiers at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 9.750/141.16. But he fell off to 10.13/137.61 in the opening round that lost to Reid Whisnant's 10.05/138. His next stop was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final, but in spite of running 9.96/137.61 he was nowhere close to the winning 9.71/141 of Don Carlton who had now taken over driving the "Motown Missile.” The Chevy Pro Stock teams were having a harder and harder time trying to keep pace with the Mopar Hemis. Even the Fords stepped up their pace and the Chevy teams were starting to fall behind. It was dark days for them in NHRA competition, but AHRA decided to let the Chevys have a weight handicap. Of course, this helped immensely. At Green Valley Raceway, for the next AHRA Grand American race, all the Mopar teams boycotted this race except for Bobby Yowell. So, the field was made up of fourteen Chevys, one Ford, and Yowell's Duster. It was a Chevy lover's dream. Jim beat the Camaros of Wayne Dobbs, Bill Hielscher, and Royce Freeman to reach the final. His semifinal win came with a 10.09. His final round opponent was Joe Satmary whose semifinal win came at 10.32. So, it looked like Hayter had the win in the bag, but he fouled and gave the win to Satmary. Things were still really bad for the Chevy teams in NHRA as at Dallas, for the NHRA Springnationals, Jim only qualified #18 in the 32 car show. He lost to eventual winner Ronnie Sox in the opening round.rn |

Notes: Paul qualified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown with an 8.702/151.00. He improved to an 8.601/156.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to overcome eventual winner Lee Shepherd's 8.58/159. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, where his 8.820/150.50 best was good for the third alternate. A week later (August 10), he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Paul qualified #5 in the eight-car show with an 8.71. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round match with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Bob won their race and went on to win the event. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. NHRA racer; had a small block, not a hemi. |

Notes: Dick Landy's last Omni. | Paul ran 8.52/159.29 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 8.60/158.45 beat Gordie Rivera's 8.62/157, but in the second round, he lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.47/159 with an 8.66/159.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with an 8.54/158.45. In the first round, he fouled away an 8.523/161.00 against Pat Musi's 8.50/159. He was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals with a best of 8.70/154.63. Paul got into the show when Warren Johnson's Starfire broke, but his 8.70/157.85 in the first round, lost to Bob Ingles' 8.58/155. He lost at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in the first round, when he fouled away an 8.708/154.63 against Musi's 8.64/159. Originally listed 161.87 speed, but removed that until we get confirmation. This was a small black wedge, not a hemi. |

Notes: 339 W-2 Wedge Small block, not a hemi. Set national ET record at 8.48 at Gainesville, then reset it at Fremont at 8.43. Tested 342 Ted Spehar engine. | Bob parked his championship-winning Fairmont and went to Chrysler for '79. Racers thinking it would take him some time to adjust to the new combination, were not too happy after qualifying ended at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There at the top of the ladder, was Glidden's 8.56/159.57 (Top Speed). An 8.59 at only 147.05 beat Brad Yuill's 8.83/154 in the first round. He picked up to an 8.50 at only 144.69 to beat Larry Lombardo's 8.70/156 in Bill Jenkins' Camaro in round two. His speed continued to drop as in the semifinal; Bob ran 8.58 at 140.84 to drop Don Nicholson's 8.83/156. That put him in the final against Joe Satmary. Bob lost a freeze plug and had to drive through his own water, and still set an 8.49 track record at a paltry 150.75 to beat Joe's 8.71. At the NHRA Gatornationals, it was more of the same for the other Pro Stock drivers. Bob qualified #1 at 8.52/159.57 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.58 beat Nicholson, while his 8.55/149 advanced when Satmary fouled in round two. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with an 8.48/150 over Mark Yuill. It was good to see long-time Pro Stock campaigner Ronnie Sox up for the challenge in the final. Sox was also running a 340 based Mopar car, and this was the first all Mopar NHRA final in six years. But it was apparent that his hasn't as stout as Glidden's as in the final, Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.53/147.29 as Sox fouled with an 8.75/156 attempt. Things didn't change when the teams pulled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Once again, Glidden headed the Pro Stock qualifiers with an 8.54/158.45 (Low ET and Top Speed). It was an eight-car show, and Bob breezed past the first-round with an 8.59 when Jim Kinnett fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.61/151 beat Randy Humphrey's 8.66. In the final, he ran Lee Shepherd. The two left together, but soon Bob took control, and his 8.59/149 beat Lee's 8.71/155. At the NHRA Springnationals, there was some hope for the other Pro Stock racers when Bob didn't quite win all the accolades. Sure he set Low ET, was first in qualifying, and won the race, but someone else got Top Speed (Larry Lombardo at 159.85). His 8.57 (Low ET) was tops in qualifying, and he ran 8.69, 8.66, and 8.66 over Satmary, Shepherd, and Frank Iaconio to reach the final against Lombardo. A final round 8.61/157.61 copped the victory over Larry's 8.76/151. Bob was now undefeated for a full year in NHRA National event competition. He finally lost at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals. He had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 9.08/148.27. In the first round, a 9.12/141.73 beat Nicholson, but he fouled against Randy Humphrey in the semifinals. He made it one round further at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #1 with an 8.52, then set Low ET and Top Speed at 8.51/160.14 on his way to a final-round meeting with Iaconio. Bob's Arrow broke in the final, and Frank got the victory with an 8.60/156. He got back to his winning ways at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Glidden qualified #1 in the eight-car field with an 8.49/158.17 (Top Speed). He beat Mark Yuill in round one, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET at 8.46 over Nicholson, who fouled. In the final, he met Iaconio again, and this time the little Arrow didn't break. Bob ran 8.47 to take the win over Frank's 8.53. In August, Byron held an interesting best of three match race between Nicholson's Mustang and Glidden's Arrow. They were said to be legal weight, but the times were pretty quick. Dyno beat Bob three straight with a best of 8.34, while Glidden's three runs were 8.46, an 8.36 with a red light, and an 8.37. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Bob was running some special carburetors from Holley. Once again, he qualified #1 with an 8.58. Another 8.58 at 157.34 beat Kinnett in round one. He set Low ET in round two with an 8.56/157.61 that took out Andy Mannarino. In the semifinals, another 8.58/156.79 beat Kevin Rotty's 8.71/157. In the final, he faced off against Lombardo in Bill Jenkins Camaro. Bob grabbed the victory with an 8.61/143.50 over Larry's 8.72/154. |

Notes: Arnew was at Dover Dragstrip in April for an NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. In the first round, his 10.33/132.00 beat Ken Montgomery's 10.67/133. Unfortunately, he ran against Bob Banning Jr. in the semifinals and missed a shift, advancing Banning into the final. Jack was at Capitol Raceway on June 27 for another NHRA Pro Stock circuit race. It was an eight-car show, and his 10.28/135.73 beat Clarence McNeal in the opening round. In the semifinals, he took on the always-tough Ed Miller. Arnew won with a 10.19/135.36 over Ed's slightly better 10.18/135. This moved Jack into the final against Bill Blanding in the "Mimi" Camaro. The two had a good race, but Jack was sharp on the tree, and his 10.23/136.80 got the victory over Bill's 10.16/136. In early August, he reset the A/MP record to 10.33 at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove with this car. He also won the NHRA Pro Stock Circuit Race held at Maple Grove on September 5. In the final, he got off the line really well, and his 10.34/131.96 held on to win over Rick Holladay's much better 10.19/134. Also ran 10.19 at Jackson, SC, and 10.24 at Maple Grove. |
