Notes: Mike had to be disappointed at Pomona as he failed to qualify. Only two Mopars qualified for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after this, NHRA gave the Hemis a new 7.10 lb. per cubic inch weight break. It seemed to help as at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, four Mopars qualified and Fons' 8.97/152.54 was the quickest (#9). But he faced Bob Glidden in the opening round and Mike's 9.03 lost to Glidden's 8.96.

Notes: Alban qualified #12 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he lost to Randy Humphrey. At the NHRA Springnationals, an 8.72/157.34 qualified #5 in the field, but he lost to Don Nicholson in the first round. He continued to qualify well when he showed up at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, hitting 8.65/158.73 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, by qualifying #9 that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Gauthier ran a strong 8.67/157.61, but it wasn't enough as Glidden moved on with an 8.51/158.

Notes: Gauthier failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran really well at Cayuga on May 17 for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He reached the final against Frank Iaconio. But his 8.62/158.45 finished runner-up to Frank's 8.45/160. Alban qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals in July with an 8.57/159.29. He slowed to an 8.75/155.17 in round one, that lost to Mark Yuill's 8.54/158. NHRA held its next Eastern Regional race at Maple Grove on August 2, and Gauthier was there. His 8.60 qualified #5 and gave him the honor of running low qualifier, Iaconio, in the first round. Alban gave it a good shot, but his 8.58/159.01 finished second best to Frank's 8.53/158. The following week(August 9), he was at the NHRA Grandnationals, where he ran a great 8.48/162.45 to qualify #6 in the eight-car show. This time he lost to the eventual winner Lee Shepherd, in the opening round, but his booming 162 held up for the Top Speed of the event honors. 37 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Alban ran 8.57/160.42 to get the #11 spot in the field. He faced Bob Glidden in the first round, and had the car break on the line. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. It was a great showing for the Canadian.

Notes: Don started the season in a '69 Cuda that he raced at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lost in the first round, to Ronnie Sox. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 10.22 and lasted until round two, where he lost to Wally Booth's Camaro. On February 15, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 10.12 qualified #7, and he advanced past round one when Sam Carroll fouled against him. In round two, he lost to Don Carlton driving one of Sox and Martin's cars. Rockingham hosted the AHRA Pro-Am Championships in April, and Don was there. He advanced when Ed Miller pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan on the landing in the first round. But in round two, he fouled against Sox. He had some bad luck at the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier Raceway. Don qualified #4, but before eliminations, he was changing engines. The hoist broke and dropped the engine onto the grill and radiator support on the front of the car. The damage was too much for the car to run. Grotheer was at Dallas for the Division 3 Opener on May 3. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 10.64 lost to Jim Hayter's 10.32. A week later, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Forty-four Pro Stock cars were there, and Don's 'Cuda was one of them. He beat Hubert Platt and then lost in round three. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He beat Eddie Schartman's 10.59 in the first round, with a 10.42, but he lost in round two. He also lost in round two a week later (June 14) at the NHRA Springnationals. A first Round 10.31 beat Ronnie Mercer, but he fouled against Booth in the second round. Grotheer won at Seattle's Pro Stock Championships in July. He qualified #1 with a 10.27 and then ran 10.28 in the first round, over a fouling Jim Petrie. He had an easy second-round race and then ran another 10.28 in the semifinals to beat Dick Tutino. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck. Don set both ends of the track record while winning with a 10.10/136.36 over Lambeck's 10.43/135. His next stop was at York for the NHRA Summernationals. Don qualified #4 with a 10.06/137.40. He ran another 10.06 at 138.46 in the first round, to beat a fouling John Petrie. In round two, his Cuda developed problems and slowed to 15.05 that lost to Herb McCandless' 10.06/138.

Notes: Grotheer was one of the top Mopar performers in Pro Stock during the first three years of the class. He started the '72 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. A 9.78 qualified #7, and he beat Melvin Yow in the first round. But in round two, a strange thing happened. Grotheer was to race Ronnie Sox, and Don's car died on the line. But then Sox fouled. So, both cars were disqualified from further competition. Don then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the 32 car field, and in the opening round, his 9.66 beat alternate Monty Mantovan. His 9.74 beat Wayne Gapp's Maverick in round two, and a third-round 9.93 topped Reid Whisnant's quicker 9.82. He beat Arlen Vanke in the semifinals by a tenth with his 9.79 putting Vanke's 9.89 out of the show. That set up a final-round meeting with Bill Jenkins' new Vega. Bill had only qualified with a 9.90, but he had picked up to 9.60s in eliminations with a best of 9.62, and in his semifinal race, he had taken out Don Carlton driving the "Motown Missile" with a 9.68. So, Jenkins was the favorite. Sure enough, Grotheer slowed to a 9.82/141.95 in the final that lost to Bill's 9.68/140. Still, Grotheer had the satisfaction of finishing first in class among the Mopars. His next big race was the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland. He ran 9.68/144.46 to qualify #3 in the sixteen-car field, but he fouled against Max Hurley in the first round. In April, he ran at the first USRT event at Phoenix. He qualified #7 and was runner-up to Dick Landy for the third-place honors. He won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Laplace on April 16. Grotheer set Low ET for the event in qualifying #1 with a 9.65. In the final, his 9.68/141.73 beat Charles Lamarr. He was at Capitol Raceway for another USRT event where his 9.49 qualified #4. He raced for the second place honors by beating Vanke's 9.62/142 with a 9.65/143. In the final, he fouled away a 9.61 against Ken Dondero, who won, driving Don Nicholson's Maverick to 9.52/143 for the win. He also won the second NHRA Division 4 race at Southland Dragway on May 28. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Don didn't qualify so well as he only got the #10 spot in the sixteen-car field. But during eliminations, things fell into place. In the first round, Carlton broke on the line; Stuart McDade broke in Billy Stepp's car in the second round, and Don advanced with a 9.74. In the semifinals, a slight holeshot, coupled with a 9.80 beat Landy's 9.79. Grotheer found himself in another final round against "Grumpy" Jenkins. The results were the same as Bill's 9.67/143 easily won over Don's 9.79/141.95. Of course, he won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Lubbock. He was at York US 30 for the USRT event in July. In the qualifying round, Don's 9.55/146.10 (Top Speed) beat Dondero's 9.58/142. He was fighting for the second place honors, and to reach the final, he ran 9.48/146.10 over Wally Booth's 9.60/140 AMC effort. In the final, his 9.54/145.63 finished runner-up to Mike Fons' 9.36/145. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. It was a 32 car show and is 9.70 qualified #8. He beat Rich Maskin in the opening round and a 9.71 in round two, beat Jerry Miller's 9.84. Round three saw his 9.72 take out Bob Lambeck at 9.81. He faced Landy in the semifinals, and his 9.72/142.85 lost to Dick's 9.68/142. A couple of days later(July 19), he was at Atco for the USRT race. He qualified for the second group with a 9.64/143.54. He went on to win the second place honors by running 9.52/144.46 in the final. In August, he won the fourth NHRA Division 4 race held at Albuquerque. He qualified #1 and, in the final, set Low ET and Top Speed with a 10.35/135.13 over Irv Beringhaus 10.40. | Don won the NHRA Division 4 title in 1972. Also ran 9.65 at LaPlace and 9.549 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge.

Notes: Grotheer was at LaPlace in January for some test runs. He was running the car at legal weight and ran 9.20, 9.25, and 9.27. Don did not qualify at NHRA Pomona or Gainesville. He sold the Duster to Sox & Martin after losing his factory deal. He then returned with a Cleveland-powered Ford Pinto and ran well at Indy. Don ran 9.20/150 with the Duster at 2700 lbs. Notes: Ran 8.879/154.37 debut at 78 Pomona Winters. | John qualified on the "bump" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with an 8.85/154.90. He had one of the two Mopars that qualified for the field, and in the first round, the two were matched. Hagen got an easy solo and ran 9.02/151.77 to advance when Randy Humphrey broke on his burnout. But in round two, Hagen’s off-pace 9.03/151.77 lost to Frank Iaconio's 8.68/155.

Notes: John's little Arrow kept getting stronger and stronger as the year went on. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with an 8.49/161.00. He beat Joe Anderson's 8.64/154 in the first round, with an 8.65/160.14, but an 8.55/160.14 in round two lost to Pat Musi's 8.45/160. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with an 8.60. In the first round, he lost to Don Nicholson's Boss 429 powered Mustang. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but his 8.68/157.61 qualified #13 for the NHRA Springnationals. An off-pace 8.72/157.34 lost to Andy Mannarino's 8.57/154. The Mopar fans were starting to notice Hagen at Englishtown, where the Arrow set Top Speed at 161.57 in qualifying. His 8.51 time gave him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, an 8.59/161.00 beat Steve Taylor's 8.72/152, but another 8.59/159.85 in round two lost to a quick-leaving Frank Iaconio, who won with an 8.65. A week later (July 26), he was at Brainerd for the fifth NHRA Western Regional event. Hagen made his way to the final by beating Bill Prince with an 8.58/158.73, and a semifinal 8.55/161.87 took out Larry Peternel. In the final, he faced Lee Shepherd, and John sped to an 8.60/162.45 (Top Speed) but lost to Shepherd's 8.55/157. He was disappointed at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 8.51/161.29 best was good for the first alternate. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. An 8.53/157.89 qualified #4 in the eight-car field and an 8.51 in the first round, beat Peternel. In the semifinals, he improved to 8.43, but it wasn't enough to beat Shepherd's 8.41. He was at Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships that featured a "Mountain Motor" Pro Stock show, but his little engine could not compete against the huge engines. He did run 8.49 and 8.51. At Indy, he set Top Speed for the NHRA US Nationals at 163.63. He qualified #5 with an 8.47/161.87 and lasted until the semifinals, where Bob Glidden's 8.44 nipped his 8.46. It was after this that the car really came alive. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals, where he qualified #2 with an 8.35/164.83 (Top Speed). An even better 8.33/164.83 in round one beat Mark Yuill's 8.62/155. In round two, his 8.42/161.57 advanced when Mannarino fouled, and in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.47/161.29 against Dave Hutchens' 8.50/144. Then came the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Once again, he qualified #2 with an 8.330/165.13. The speed was a new NHRA record. John beat Musi's 8.47/157 in the first round, with an 8.43/164.23. A round two 8.44/163.33 advanced when Don Coonce fouled. In the semifinals, he beat Yuill's 8.46/159 with an 8.42/164.53. The only trouble was, while Hagen was flying in the speed department, Shepherd was the quickest with an 8.27 in qualifying and an 8.37 semifinal win. John picked it back up to an 8.39/164.23 in the final, but he still lost to Lee's 8.35/161. It was still a great showing, and with the new 500 cubic inch rules going into effect for '82, he was expected to do well in the new season. He ended up finishing seventh in the season-long NHRA points chase. John also ran 164.77 at Brainerd WCS 7/81. He was the fastest NHRA Pro Stock car before the switch to 500 cubic inch engines. (Check out the crew chief.)
