Notes: Ran 9.64 at OCIR and 9.680/142.63 at Tulsa. | Mopar lovers had it all their way in the first couple of years of Pro Stock. The 'Cudas, Challengers, Dusters, and Demons were winning everything. Then there was this guy, Bob Lambeck. He took an old Super Stock Dart and converted it into a Pro Stock, and made it run faster than it should have. He won a lot of events with the old Dart, but a new ride had to come. Lambeck had this new Duster running in January for the first OCIR All-Pro race. He lasted until the final, where his off-pace 10.15/136.15 lost to Butch Leal's 9.56/144. He lasted until the semifinals at the next All-Pro race. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified in the top half (#11) of the 32 car field. He lasted until round two before losing to Ronnie Sox. Bob had the misfortune of qualifying #5 at the third OCIR All-Pro race. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Leal which he lost. Lambeck faced Leal again, but this time it was in the final for the Bakersfield March Meet. Bob pushed the 'tree a little too hard and fouled. A week later (March 12), these two was in the final at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Lambeck out qualified Leal with a 9.53 compared to Butch's 9.56. They were behind Ken Dondero's 9.44 in Don Nicholson's Maverick. Bob beat Ed Terry, and in round two, his 9.56/144.23 beat Dave Atkins. He had a tough foe in Bill Bagshaw in the semifinals, but Bill broke a driveshaft, and Lambeck advanced. Leal had run a track record 9.40 in his semifinal win, so he was looking good, but he reversed the outcome of a week earlier by fouling. Bob got the victory with a 9.52/142. At the final OCIR All-Pro race, it was expected to be another close race between these two. They qualified one-two with Leal's 9.64 getting the pole over Lambeck's 9.68. Bob quickened his pace with a 9.64 of his own in the first round. Things were going according to plan until the semifinals, where Leal broke a rod and lost while Lambeck went 9.68 to trailer Bob Anderson. He then faced Ken Van Cleve for the money, and Ken fouled, giving Bob's 9.72/142.40 the win. He finished runner-up to Sox at the IHRA 1/8 Mile Championships at Charlotte. He competed at The IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until round two before Sox's 9.45 beat his 9.56. |

Notes: By 1973, there weren't a lot of Challengers running in Pro Stock as most of the Mopar campaigners had switched to the A-body platform. Castaldo stuck to his Challenger and did well with it. In April, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Those pesky Vega's were running well as they picked up the first three spots in qualifying. Castaldo's 9.52 beat Earl Hansell's 10.81 in the opening round of eliminations. But he spun the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Rich Mirarcki's 9.85. He was at Englishtown on April 15 for an eight-car round-robin show. In the first round, his 9.71/145.86 lost to Mirarcki's 9.51/144. In his second race, Ray Allen's 9.50/145 defeated his 9.57/143.31. He soloed in his third race and ran his best time at 9.53/144.23. Shortly after that, he went to Connecticut for yet another eight-car show. A first-round 9.72 beat Rich Simone, and in the semifinal, his eased up 10.16 advanced when Frank Iaconio fouled. But he hurt the engine on the pass and could not run the final. Iaconio took his place as the "break rule" was in effect. Charlie was the second alternate at the NHRA Summernationals at 9.52/143.50. That was his only NHRA national event. Charlie won at an Englishtown event in July with a 9.51/143.76, per Raceway Park News. He also ran 9.46 at Atco. Reed Koeppe owns the car as of 9/21, and he confirms S&M built it. |

Notes: Coleman had his new Duster out at LaPlace Dragway on April 1st for the NHRA Division Four opener. In the first round, Bob Penner fouled against him. A 9.50 in the semifinal beat Charlie Rogers' 9.60. In the final, he faced low qualifier, Larry Huff, and Huff ran an off-pace 9.88/142 while Bob got the victory with a 9.44/144. He was at Southland Dragway in May for the second NHRA Division Four race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 9.19/148.29 while reaching the final. In the final, his 9.48/145.39 finished runner-up to Oscar Roberts' 9.49/143. |

Notes: Hagen was in Minnesota in July for the USRT event. He lost in the first round, but he came back for a consolation race against Don Grotheer. He lost that race too, but he did run a personal best (to this point) of 9.48. |

Notes: This car was driven by top fuel driver Steve Carbone at the Division 4 WCS event at Albuquerque the weekend of August 11/12/1973. | Huff was runner-up to Butch Leal at the second OCIR All-Pro race. His final round 9.55/144.23 lost to Leal's 9.36/147. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 in the sixteen-car field with a 9.63/142.63. He lost to Dick Landy in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his 9.80/142.85 qualified #18 in the 32 car show. He lost early in eliminations. Larry qualified #3 with a 9.58 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He worked his way to the final of the eight-car show, stopping a tough Bill Bagshaw in the semifinals. In the final, he ran Bob Lambeck and his 9.47 took the victory over Bob's 9.60. A week later (March 11), he was at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 9.37/145.86. Once again, he worked his way to the final, running a strong 9.26/147.28 in round two while beating Sonny Bryant's 9.38/144. In the semifinal, a 9.28 beat Larry Breaux's 9.35. In the final, he faced low qualifier Landy, who had set Low ET in round two with a 9.07. Huff tried hard in the final, but his 9.32/147.29 was no match for Dick's 9.12/150 and Larry had to settle for the runner-up spot. It was then back to OCIR for the final All-Pro race ran on March 24. Huff qualified #4 and in the opening round to beat Ken Van Cleave with a 9.36. A second round 9.28/146.34 beat Jim Baker, but he lost to Landy in the semifinals. He got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace in April. There, his final round 9.88/142 lost to Bob Coleman's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 9.44/144. The Challenger was starting to get dated by 1973 standards, but he was still doing pretty well with it. On May 24 he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American held there. He qualified #5, but failed to reach the finals. In June he was at Denver's Century 21 Dragway for the AHRA Springnationals. Once again, he failed to make the finals after qualifying #4 with a 10.01. He went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals the following week (June 10). A 9.53 got the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car field, but a 9.71 in the first round, lost to Bob Riffle's 9.51. |
