Notes: World Champ 67/68. Ran 7.03/223.88 at 1967 World Finals. Originally had 6.685 listed for this year, but moved it to 1968 because it would have been the all time quickest and we didn't have verification. Can someone confirm what year and where the team went 6.685? Also did the team run quicker than the 7.03 World Finals time in 1967? NHRA Tulsa OK 1967

Notes: At the AHRA Winternationals, Osborn qualified #13 in the 32 car field. His 7.12 beat Steve Carbone's quicker 7.04 in the first round, but he lost to Leroy Goldstein in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #25 with a 7.20/190.67 and advanced past the first round with a 7.41/205.50 when Jim Nicoll fouled. In the second round, his 7.11 beat Ron Rivero's quicker 7.08. In the third round, John Mulligan's 6.86/221 stopped his 7.42/158.17. He qualified fifth (7.11/218.96) at the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9. That was pretty good, considering that 35 cars were going for the eight available positions. A first-round 6.98/220.04 carried him past Butch Maas' 7.27/171. He fouled against Carbone in the semifinal. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, Bennie qualified #18, and a 6.96/202.24 got him past a fouling Gerry Glenn in the first round. His second-round 7.91 lost to Dwight Salisbury's 7.36. He won over an eight-car field at Oklahoma on April 6. He set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.15/213.38 in the final over John Wiebe's 7.27/198. He then went to Amarillo on April 20 for the second NHRA South Central Pro Fuel Circuit race. It was an eight-car show that had 22 cars attempting to qualify. Unfortunately, Bennie failed to qualify. A week later (April 27), he was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division Four race. A 7.09 qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field, but he lost early. On May 11, he raced at NHRA's Division 4 race at Tulsa. A 7.08 qualified second to Carbone, and the two of them made their way into the final. Carbone laid down a 6.87 track record to stop Osborn in the final. At the third Division 4 race at Corpus Christi on May 18, he took a big win, beating a fouling Larry Brown in the final with a motor-saving 8.28. Earlier, he qualified second with a 6.92 behind Watus Simpson's 6.91. He ran 7.67 on a first-round single when Dave Chenevert was unable to run, and in the second round, his 7.17/211.26 beat Chip Woodall. In the semifinals, a 7.77 beat Pete Robinson's sleepy 7.29. He faced Tom Hoover in a best-of-three-match race at Minneapolis on June 8. In the first race, his slower 7.03/225 beat Tom's 6.92/206. In the second race, Hoover's track record 6.83 beat Osborn's 6.86/222.76 to even up the match. Bennie locked up the match in the final race with a 6.85/224.42 that beat Tom's 6.98/208. At Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.96/221.67 qualified #29. He fouled against Chenevert in the first round. Shortly after that, he was back at Corpus Christi for a sixteen-car show. He ran 7.33 to qualify #3. A 7.43 in the opening round beat Wes Granger's 8.28, and he improved to 7.27 in round two that defeated George Cox's quicker but later 7.19. Paul Pritchette fouled against him in the semifinal, and Osborn made an easy pass to advance. He went up against future superstar Kenny Bernstein in the final. Bernstein got the victory with a 7.15 over Bennie's 7.31 runner-up effort. Twenty-three cars tried for the eight spots available at the Division 5 race at the end of June at Opelousas, Louisiana. Bennie's 7.01 fell just short of the 6.99 bump. He had blown his good engine and attempted to make the show with his backup motor. Back at Dallas on July 20 for the Division 4 race, Bennie took another win, running as quick as a 6.89 over George Cox's 6.95 in the semifinal. For the win, he beat Richard Tharp in the Carroll Bros. car. On August 9, he ran at the OCIR Anniversary race. A 7.08/212.76 beat Butch Maas in the first round, but he fouled away a 7.04/214.79 against James Warren in the semis. At the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley on August 24, a 7.06 qualified #16 in the #32 car field. He ran an 8.12/124 first-round run over a fouling Grover Rogers. In the second round, Woodall's 6.99/210 beat his 7.24/198.22. At the Division 4 final at Amarillo, a 7.06 qualified second. He was upset in the first round by Larry Brown's 7.44 that beat his 7.49. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 6.735/218.97 qualified #25. He ran a first-round 6.82/217 over Don Garlits, who accidentally hit the kill switch. Due to John Mulligan's accident, he ran a 6.87/185.56 single in the second round. He fouled away a 6.77/222.22 against Don Prudhomme in round three. He was back at Tulsa on October 19 for the AHRA Points Finals. A first-round 6.96 beat Robinson who had John Skiba helping out. A second-round 7.02 beat Jim Nicoll, but his clutch locked up against Leroy Goldstein in the semifinal, and he was eliminated. Then he traveled to Dallas for the NHRA World Finals on October 26. He qualified second with a 6.74/222.76. A first-round 6.84/217.91 beat Ron Goodsell's 6.96/217. He singled with a 6.82/223.88 (Top Speed) when Kelly Brown lost fire in Leland Kolb's car. In the semifinal, Carbone's 6.69/211 beat Bennie's 6.96/218.97. The Indy 6.735 and Dallas 223.88 were his best NHRA national event times. Where did Bennie run 227? Notes: Bennie Osborn had two really great seasons in the sport. Before '67, he was a good hard local racer, with not many people outside of Oklahoma hearing about him. But that all changed in '67, and if anything, he ran even stronger in '68. After that, he quickly faded out of the racing spotlight. He started the '68 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 7.05/207.36 qualified #6. An easy 7.44/208.32 beat Earl Binns' 7.53/214 in the opening round. In the second round, his 7.37/213.28 fell to Jim Dunn's 7.29/201. He was at OCIR early in March for the PDA Championships. In the opening round, his 7.01/216.32 defeated Norm Weekly in the "Beachcomber." He lost soon after to John Mulligan. Shortly after that, he was at Bakersfield for the March Meet. A 6.96 qualified #4 in the 32 car field. He ran 7.11/187.50 in the first round to beat Walt Stevens, driving the "Outcast." In round two, both he and his opponent, Dominic Cardoza, shut down, and Osborn won the coasting contest. The same thing happened in round three against Leroy Goldstein when both cars lost their fire during their race. This time, Bennie lost to Leroy. He was at LaPlace on April 7 for a best-of-three-match race against Dave Chenevert. It was not a good day for Chenevert as he lost three straight. In their first race, Dave fouled, and Osborn ran 7.50/151.51 for the win. The best race of the match came in their second round. Bennie's 7.08/215.30 beat Dave's 7.14/216. The "Shreve Auto" car had throttle problems in the last race, and Bennie soloed with a 7.07/215.82 for the win. Of course, he was at Oklahoma City Raceway on April 21 for the Drag World Fuel Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he waded into the semifinal with ease. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with his 7.07 at 219.34, beating Tom Hoover's Ford-powered car. He faced low qualifier Jimmy Nix in the final, and Osborn slipped to a 7.35/222.77 (Top Speed) that finished runner-up to Nix's 7.13/219. He made up for that by winning over an eight-car field at Odessa, Texas, on May 5. He qualified #1 with a 7.40/206.88 and then improved to 7.22/197 in the first round to beat Bobby Joe Rutledge's 7.68/198. He improved even more in the semifinal, where his 7.19/200.88 beat Larry Brown's close 7.23/216 in the "Chaos Kids" car. Gary Bailey fouled against him in the final, and Bennie ran 7.20/207.84 for the victory. On May 11, Bennie was at Green Valley for an eight-car Pro Fuel Circuit race. He qualified #1 with a 7.42/201.34 and won his first-round race at 7.55/206.42. He fouled away a 7.15/212 against Don Cook in the semifinals. The following day (May 12), he was at Tulsa for another Pro Fuel Circuit race. Osborn set Low ET at 7.11, but in the semifinals, his 7.35 lost to Cook's 7.25. He won an eight-car show at Oklahoma City on May 18. In the final there, he ran 7.21/220.34 (Top Speed) to beat Vic Brown's fouling 7.25/219 in the "Creitz & Greer" car. Bennie was at Tulsa for a Texas Pro Fuel Circuit race on June 9. Twenty-six cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Osborn got Low ET of the meet with his 7.13 taking the pole. He lasted until the semifinal before losing to John Wiebe when Bennie had a freeze plug come off and got water under the tires. At Englishtown on June 17 for the NHRA Springnationals, Osborn qualified #2 with a 6.86. Unfortunately, he fouled against Chris Karamesines in the first round. The Pro Fuel Circuit held an eight-car event at Amarillo on June 23. Bennie qualified #4 with a 7.44, but in the first round, he improved to a 7.27/211.36 to beat Jim Nicoll. A 7.41 in the semifinals fell to the race's eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 7.37. Another win came at the NHRA Divisional race at Opelousas, LA, on June 30. There, his final round 6.83 won over a fouling Jimmy Nix. In Mid-July, he was at Amarillo for the Texas Championships. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 7.56/210.76. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the opening round and his engine blowing 7.46 defeated Kenny's 7.73. Unfortunately, he was unable to return for the semifinal. Bennie ran 7.021 at Indy 1968 and 7.05/211.76 at the Dallas International Raceway NHRA World Finals. | Also beat McEwen at OCIR in a one-run, $14,000 (14 grand) match at OCIR in April, 7.02 to 7.40. Notes: Bennie did not tour much, preferring to stay closer to home in the Oklahoma area. He did not race at NHRA's big shows (Pomona, Bristol & Indy), but he did make a big splash at Tulsa for the World Finals. Osborn was at Odessa Dragway in April for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.32/204.08. His 7.47/206.84 advanced in the opening round, but a second-round 7.46/208.32 lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 7.20/210 in the Crower-Blair car. He was at the NHRA Division 5 Opener in early May at Great Bend, Kansas. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 7.65 but failed to reach the finals. He ran really well on May 30 for Pittsburgh's Memorial Day Championships. It was another eight-car show, and Bennie qualified #3 with a 7.94/194.38. He then set Low ET and Top Speed during eliminations with a 7.61/199.10, but he lost to John Wiebe in the final. On June 3, he was at Oklahoma City for the NHRA Division 4 race. A 7.56 qualified #7 and another 7.56 in round one, beat Vic Brown's quicker 7.43 in the "Spoiler," but Osborn hurt his engine on the run and could not make the semifinals. The next Division 4 race was at Pel State Drag Strip on June 25. In the first round, Osborn made an easy pass to advance when Joe Haggerty, driving the "Chaos Kid's" car, shut down early. In the semifinals, his 7.58/192.84 lost to Nando Haase's 7.22/196. His next stop was at Castle Rock, Colorado, for the High Altitude Nationals. Bennie qualified #5 in the sixteen-car show, and he beat Don Denner in the first round, with a 7.73/187.10. But a second-round 7.68/198.22 lost to Alan Bockla's 7.61/211. The following week (July 9), he was at Tulsa for a six-car show. He didn't win (Don Garlits did) or even make the final, but he set Low ET at 7.40. Bennie was back in Oklahoma City for the Southwest Fuel Nationals in August. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.26, but he was upset by Dan Rightsell in the first round. The next day (August 27), he won the Tulsa Invitational race. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a track record 7.18. In the first round, Bertie Williams fouled against him, and Osborn advanced with a 7.28/208.80. Goldstein fouled against him in the semifinals, and Bennie made an easy pass. He faced Rightsell in the final, and a 7.26/209.78 got him the victory over Dan's 7.42/177. Back in Oklahoma on September 11 for an eight-car show, Osborn's 7.76 qualified #4. He lasted until the semifinals before losing to Brown, who was now driving for Creitz-Greer. In October, Wichita held a big show that had 42 cars attempt to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Osborn qualified #10, but a 7.44/198.66 in the first round, lost to Wayne Griffith's 7.29. At Tulsa, for the NHRA World Finals, Osborn became well-known to the racing community. He qualified #9 with a 7.23/221.12. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Vic Brown, who was still driving the Creitz-Greer car. Bennie opened many eyes when his 7.14/214 dropped Brown's 7.17/215. A second-round 7.19/220.58 beat Griffith's 7.47/171. He then faced Steve Carbone, driving "Sneaky Pete" Robinson's SOHC Ford car. This was a close one as Carbone had Osborn covered and then pulled the 'chute too early. Bennie's 7.13/219 barely nosed out Carbone's 7.07/187. He faced another SOHC Ford in the final, Lou Baney's "Brand Motor's car driven by Don Prudhomme. Osborn was more than up for it. He reset the track record to 7.03 at 223.88 to get the victory over the "Snake's" 7.12/222. Beat Prudhomme in the finals at Tulsa to win NHRA Top Fuel World Championship in 1967.

Notes: Bennie was the second alternate at Pomona with a 7.132/217.39. On March 1, he was at LaPlace Dragway for an eight-car show. He had a blower explode in the first round while running against Marvin Schwartz. Osborn left the track surface, and after he got the car stopped, he discovered that the off-road trek slightly bent the chassis. The car was repaired in time for the Dallas season opener on March 15, which featured a best-of-three-match race against Richard Tharp driving the "Creitz and Donovan" car. Bennie lost the first two matches and the race, but he won the last one only because Tharp fouled. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Springnatinals in Dallas. Although we don't have that exact ET, we know that Gerry Glenn ran 6.685 for the 4th and Chip Woodall ran 6.741 for the sixth spot, so we are listing 6.71 for Bennie until we get confirmation. He beat Doc Halladay in round one, 6.948/192.71, to a shutoff, and he won at 6.863/196.07 in round two when Bob Murray broke. Bob Gibson's 6.91/207 beat Bennie's 9.55 shutoff in round three. Bennie was a DNQ at Indy with a 6.97 best and was the fourth alternate at the Dallas World Finals (times not reported).

Notes: This was the last season that the little Chevy-powered cars stood a chance against the Chryslers. New tires had knocked the cars out of contention now that the Hemis could hook up. Slippery tracks gave the cars a bit of a chance. Regals in the "A&B Speed Shop" car held out well. The unblown car qualified well in some big shows. On March 14, he qualified for a sixteen-car show at Fontana with an 8.13. Unfortunately, the little Chevy failed to fire in the first round against Bob Downey in the "A&W Root Beer" car. The following week (March 21), he was at San Fernando for an eight-car show. His 8.48/185.84 failed to qualify for the field with an 8.42 "bump." Regals faced off against Bob Harrop's Coronet on June 12 at Cecil County for a best-of-three match. The Dodge got a running start in their first race and won with an 8.18/137 to Regals' 8.23/177. After that, Harrop was given a two-second hard start, and Bernie came from behind and won both races with times of 8.32/177 and 8.34/176. Photo from Bakersfield, March 1966.
