Notes: Jim "Jazzy" Nelson is credited with being the first prominent racer to utilize the Fiat Topolino ("little mouse") body in drag racing. His flathead-powered, '34 Ford-framed competition coupe presaged the many hundreds of Fiat-bodied altereds that were to follow. Four Stromberg 97s bolted to an Edelbrock manifold atop a '49 Ford block. He shifted a '37 Cad-LaSalle trans. Nelson was a frequent Top Eliminator winner (against dragsters) in the mid-Fifties. - RT |

Notes: Time (on fuel) cited in Don Montgomery's definitive book "Those Wild Fuel Altereds." Note: all entries for this team use spelling "Burkhart" as appears throughout Montgomery's book. Name spelled "Burkhardt" in most period Drag News articles, captions, but those were frequently mispelled. We need to confirm which is correct. - RT |

Notes: Said to be the first major non-automotive sponsor in drag racing. - BP; On Apr. 8, this car debuted at Pomona as the Armstrong & Williams B/D, with Hal Williams driving. The engine was an Ardun-Merc. On May 6, again at Pomona, Maurice Richer had joined the team, and the Ardun-Merc was replaced with a 341ci Chrysler Hemi. It ran as the Armstrong-Richer & Williams Nesbitt's Orange Special. But after that race, Williams dropped out of the picture. Armstrong and Richer traded driving throughout the '56 season. They both did very well. Armstrong's finest moments included winning Top Eliminator at Pomona at the Chrysler-engined dragster's first outing on May 6. He took Top Eliminator at Pomona in July at the Southern California Championships on July 1. He won Top Eliminator at San Gabriel on July 4. He set a track ET record at San Gabriel on Oct. 7. Notes: The team of Bill Butters and Don Porterfield ran a succession of Deuces (a coupe and a roadster) and dragsters under the Groh's Texaco (Rivera, Calif.) banner throughout the Fifties. I have dated pics of this car running at the second NHRA Nationals (Kansas City, Mo.) in 1956. Unclear whether the roadster ran a flathead or OHV Caddy mill (photos show three pipes per side). - RT; Drag News report of Colton race results (10/19/56) states they ran a Merc. Notes: Interviewed in Drag Racing Online, Karamesines said his first rail was built in 1955. It had a short 92-inch wheelbase, not unusual for the time. First ran an Olds as he was familiar with it, later replaced with his signature Chrysler. "The Greek" recounted that he first hooked up with Don Maynard in 1956, starting a longtime racing association. His first fuel car ran six two-bbl carbs in '56. - RT |

Notes: Mid-mounted Ranger V-770 engine was oriented upside-down (valve covers up) rather than inverted as it was in WWII-era training planes. A rear-wheel-drive car, GM #5, is usually seen with a prominent "Buck Rogers" dorsal fin (11/56 Hot Rod). As with many Arfons cars, it was modified over its life. It has been restored with an Allison V-1710 for contemporary Cacklefests. - RT; Photo: George Klass Collection - MB |

Notes: Newspaper drag race results for drag strips throughout California never gave driver's names for members of the Shortblocks car club. A Corvette engine replaced the Merc engine in the summer when the car raced at San Gabriel Valley Drag Strip on Aug. 12, 1956, clocking a disappointing 96.98 mph. Notes: Grimes may have driven this car at a few races in 1956, but he had the best times in it with other drivers doing the driving. Jack Moss drove it at an NHRA regional meet in Amarillo on Aug. 19, clocking 116.88 mph. Bert Kessler, from Matton, Illinois, drove it at the ATAA World Series of Drag Racing event at Lawrenceville, Illinois, on Aug. 26, running 117.493 mph. But Everett Goosic recorded the fastest times in the car, with runs all over 120 mph at meets at Perryville in November and December. Photo: Arizona Republic, Aug. 19, 1956 - MB |

Notes: Buddy Sampson partnered with Bill Gundy, of Tucson, in racing this dragster at a Perryville race on Aug. 5. They won the A/D class using an Ardun Merc engine on gas, clocking 109.09 mph. Shortly after, the Merc engine was blown during a race. Sampson then installed a fuel-injected Desoto in time for a race at Davis-Monthan AFB on Oct. 21. He used the Desoto engine at the race at Perryville on Nov. 3. Photo: Just curious (Phx. Hist.), p. 24, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. - MB |

Notes: Dick Stern and Fritz Schmitz shared ownership in this dragster. While in the military service in California, Stern raced around the Southland. He was released from the service before summer. He returned home to Arizona with the dragster. He entered a race at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson on July 15, but blew his engine. The car's best speed while competing in California was 132 mph. Notes: They garnered Top Eliminator at Morrow Drag Strip at least twice in 1956. On Aug. 19, they share Top Eliminator with John Bradley in the Gene's Brake Shop Special, both getting the same top time. On Sep. 22, they were the outright winners of Top Eliminator at Colton.
