Notes: Strickler's Bill Jenkins-tuned "factory issue" 409 ran in the new-for-'62 SS/S (Super Super/Stock) class. Reflecting NHRA's constant penchant for class shuffling, this would revert to simply S/S the following year. When equipped with the special Z-11 heads and two-piece aluminum manifold introduced in late summer this car ran B/FX (also new for '62). - RT

Notes: In August Chevrolet released a very limited number of Z-11 engine components (special heads and a two-part aluminum intake manifold) that was part of the full-on 427 W-motor package in '63. When outfitted with these parts Strickler's Bill Jenkins-tuned Belair moved from SS/S class to FX, both classes new for '62. (Factory experimental was intended for cars with optional factory equipment not generally available to the public.) According to Larry Davis' book, Strickler set the B/FX record with this car in Z-11 trim (112.80), but reverted back to SS/S trim for the Nationals, and put the FX parts on a '62 Impala which ran B/FX at that meet. - RT

Notes: Sturm walked away with the 1962 NHRA Stock points race with his unique '62 Bel Air, a unique and masterful combination of winning parts, but not a vehicle that you could actually find on any dealer showroom. Working the liberal rules of the Factory experimental class, which allowed mixing and matching engine parts so long as they were available individually from the factory, he built a Rochester fuel-injected (Corvette option), 301-cube (swapping a 283 crank into a 327 block), 4-speed Chevy coupe. (Five years later Chevy would appropriate this by-then-common hot rodder practice when it rolled out the Z-28 Camaro, calling the high-revving engine a 302.) Sturm held the C/FX record with this car from late '62 into 1964. - RT

Notes: Strickler debuted this car at the '62 Indy Nationals. It utilized the Z-11 engine pieces from his B/FX-record-setting Belair (Old Reliable II, reconverted to SS/S trim) and a lightweight aluminum front end. His competition in the class final was Don Nicholson in an identically appointed Impala. Nicholson eked out a narrow win in the bang-shift final. - RT

Notes: Dean was still in high school when, with the help of his dad, he built his street roadster. His dad had friends who helped, including Frank Kurtis, Vic Edelbrock, Harry Weber, Don Nicholson, Ak Miller, and Jack Lufkin. His dad knew people! In the 1961 season, he began with a 265ci Chevy motor, but after a few months of mediocre performance, he switched to a 283ci Chevy. In prepping for the '62 Winternationals, he swapped out the carb setup for a '57 Corvette fuel injection unit. Don Nicholson advised young Lowe how to drive the car to get the lowest ET possible. It worked. Not only did Lowe win the B/SR class, but he set both ends of the national record. Dean recalled, "I was the happiest kid in school Monday morning. My roadster had won a class at the Winter Nationals, set a new class record, and lost to a car already becoming a legend [Doug Cook in the Stone-Woods-Cook B/GS Willys in a round of street eliminator]". Notes: Ran A/MP with Chevy backed by S&S Racing Team. | After moving from the repair department to car sales, Durham was able to devote more time to racing. He campaigned the first 427-cid Z-11 '63 Chevy available in Washington, D.C., under the name Strip Blazer I and improved from his 409 best of 12.26 to 12.01 his first time out at 75/80 Drag-A-Way. Later that year, he defeated both Dave Strickler's A/S Chevy and Bill Jenkins' S/S entry. Before long, Durham was regularly booked at match races on the East Coast, campaigning against Don Nicholson, Sox & Martin, the Ramchargers, Hayden Proffitt, Strickler, and Jenkins. - From "#48: Top NHRA Drivers of All Time"

Notes: One of 57 Z-11 Chevys built for the '63 model year. Z-11 was a stroked 409 (427 CID) with other race-only improvements in a body whose aluminum components included hood, front fenders and front and rear bumpers. Leal successfully switched to a Ford T-bolt the next year, and then made a long-term commitment to Plymouth in 1965. Unattributed times quoted below from Leal's recollections and may be approximate. - RT

Notes: Pontiac built 13 lightweight 421 SD Tempests for the '63 race season - seven coupes and six station wagons. All were provided coupled to a unique four-speed automatic/transaxle. Arlen Vanke went a different route, buying his own car off a dealer lot, then installing the lightweight parts and the potent 421 SD, but forgoing the transaxle for a 4-speed stick and narrowed Catalina rear end. This combination, considered by many the formula for the GTO introduced the following year, secured him the A/FX class record in September '63, which he held into 1964. - RT

Notes: Nicholson was at Detroit Dragway on June 22 for a best of five match race against the "Golden Commando" Plymouth, driven by Bill Shirley. Don's 409 wasn't up to the challenge of the Mopar. He made a time trial run at 116.27, but Shirley made one at 3 miles an hour faster. In the first race, Don's 12.82 lost to Bill's 12.17. Nicholson got off the line first in the second race, but Bill drove around him to win with a 12.37 to Don's 12.57. He also lost the third race to give the match to the Mopar. Nicholson came back out later for another run and ran 12.38/116.12.
