Notes: Grove took the hotly contested S/S trophy at the '63 Winternationals with a 12.37/114.94. (Though Cecil Yother adopted the Melrose Missile name in '65, when Grove began driving for Ford, Grove says he came up with the name in '63.) This exact car has been restored to reflect the '63 Pomona win. - RT |

Notes: 1964 Hemi Dodge factory S/S - A/FX converted in late 1964 to a fully adjustable wheelbase using all Chrysler parts. This was a project Landy worked with the factory on, and it was converted after the 1964 Nationals to a moveable Dodge van front axle that was legal in AHRA. The rear axle could also be adjusted. Landy drove this car through the end of that season. it still exists and owner Pete Haldiman has made a case that it could be considered the first 'altered wheelbase' funny car. Similar changes were made to a Plymouth by Bill Flynn of New England, though Landy's was the most substantial and was documented in Hot Rod magazine. |

Notes: Ford and Mercury contracted Dearborn Steel Tubing to build 11 A/FX Comets for the 1964 season: 10 hardtop coupes and one four-door wagon. Nicholson started the season with the wagon and drove it until April, when his coupe was finished. All these lightweights were T-10 4-speed cars. - RT | At Cecil County, Nicholson ran a 10.75/127.65, beating a 10.99 Bud Faubel challenge. These times were gas and carbs at 3200 pounds. |

Notes: Known as "The Ugly Duckling," the un-sexy 4-door wagon was a practical attempt to improve traction by getting more static weight over the rear tires. Of 11 '64 Comets modified for the factory by Dearborn Steel Tubing, all were hardtop coupes except this wagon. With it Nicholson set Low ET of 11.44 in a large field of A/FXers at '64 Winternationals. After a successful stint with the car Nicholson received a hardtop coupe. The grocery getter was handed off to Ed Schartman in April. The 7/10-64 National Dragster has pictures of this car, unlettered, running under a new non-Nicholson-affiliated sponsorship, driver in Honolulu, Hawaii in July '64, but photos elsewhere show Schartman driving this car at the '64 Nationals at Indy. The Comet wagon was built on a Falcon wheelbase of 109 inches - five inches shorter than the coupe and sedan. It weighed 3280 pounds with rear-mounted battery and fiberglass front body panels. Before Spring, Don had this wagon down to an 11.12. |

Notes: One of the original 11 (10 coupes, one station wagon) factory FXers contracted out to Dearborn Steel Tubing by FoMoCo for the 1964 season. Held NHRA class record (mph) and AHRA record (ET) in early 1964. - RT | Bill was from Mansfield, Ohio, but moved to Torrance in 1962. His parents remained in Mansfield and newspaper reports from that part of the country often attributed him to being from there, but it was never his hometown after 1962. - BP | Bill was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race on July 19. He won the A/FX class with a final Round 11.26/126.05 over Tommy Grove in the "Melrose Missile," who fouled away a quicker 11.10/128. - RH |

Notes: Chevrolet was officially out of racing, but independent racers stayed loyal to the mark. Chadwick followed the route Malcolm Durham and others followed when he went with the biggest gun he had, stuffing a '63 Z-11 427 mill into his first-year Chevelle. (The engine was a spare from fellow Southwestern racer Dick Harrell.) The result was a bowtie approximation of Ford's race-ready Thunderbolts. It wasn't an NHRA-legal A/FXer, but close enough for match race purposes. Injectors, fuel, and a lighter car would follow. - RT |

Notes: Dubbed "The World's Quickest Wedge," Bovan's '64 Polara ran a 484" mill (426 wedge with a half-inch stroker). He generally ran gas through two 4bbls, but for exhibition runs occasionally ran alky and under-the-hood Hilborn injectors. Trans was a TorqueFlite; car ran a full stock interior. At Half Moon Bay he set the official NHRA A/MP ET record of 11.45. Bovan's Dodge warranted the cover and four-page feature in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated 4/65. - RT |

Notes: While his better-known Mercury team members wielded 427 wedges in their lightened Cyclones, Doug Nash (successfully) followed the path less travelled, going the smallblock 289 route. He would later be known for his one-of-a-kind, lightweight "Bronco Buster" funny truck, and for developing the renowned Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. - RT |

Notes: Deaton took home the overall Factory experimental honors at the '64 NASCAR Winternationals in Daytona Beach. Like all 11 factory FXers built for the 1964 season, this lightweight racecar was built around a 427 wedge, 4-speed-9" rear combo. - RT |

Notes: Ronnie Sox only ran funny cars from 1965 to 1966, but he was one of the premier early funny car stars. After a stint with Chevrolet in 1962/63, Sox & Martin got a factory sponsorship in 1964 with this A/FX Comet, which won the title at Pomona that year. They were one of the American teams that visited England in 1964, but the car was likely match-raced in "less legal" trim throughout the South that season. Sox & Martin went to Plymouth in 1965 when a deal with Mercury on personal cars for the duo could not be reached for that season. - GS | Turned 10.84/123.79 early in season to win Factory Stock Eliminator at the 1964 Winternationals. Four-page feature in 11/64 SS&DI claimed an unattributed 10.84/128.50 best-of and car "very seldom slower than 11.1's." - RT |
