Notes: Chevrolet dropped out of racing at the end of 1963, prompting Durham to drop the '63 Chevy Z-11 engine into a mid-size '64 Chevelle, which he called "Strip Blazer II." The result was the closest a Chevy man was going to come to approximating Ford's race-ready Thunderbolt. Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin ('64 Comet) won the A/Factory experimental title at the 1964 Winternationals, but Durham's Chevelle beat them on consecutive evenings at the 75/80 and Cecil County drag strips, then defeated them three more times at a New York match race, according to NHRA reports. - RT |

Notes: Schartman took over driving chores of the "Ugly Duckling" from Nicholson around April, when Nicholson's hardtop coupe was finished. This was the only A/FX Comet wagon constructed; the idea being to get more static weight over the rear tires than the Cyclone hardtop afforded. The entire front end, including bumper, was fiberglass. There's a multi-page interview with Schartman in the 3/65 issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated. Times quoted are from that article. By July '64 the wagon had been shipped to Hawaii and was being run under the Pflueger Lincoln-Mercury (Honolulu) banner, with Earle "Safari" Char driving. This was apparently a short-term lease arrangement, as Schartman was back to driving the wagon at the Nationals in Indianapolis later in the year. - RT |

Notes: Like Malcolm Durham and other Chevy racers, Harrell pulled the then "top dog" 409-based 427 motor out of his full-size Z-11 '63 and plunked it in the new, lighter Chevelle to go match racing. It's said he won 31 of 38 races with this car during the '64 season. This car took the experimental Stock class at '64 AHRA Championships. It was sold at the end of the season to the team of Cooley & Foster. This was a dual-quad, 4-speed car. - RT |

Notes: One of the original 11 1964 A/FX factory Comets and the sole station wagon. James Pflueger owned a Honolulu Lincoln Mercury dealership and was also the owner of Hawaii Raceway Park. He apparently brought "Dyno" Don Nicholson's "Ugly Duckling" wagon over for the track's opening day ceremonies on the Fourth of July weekend-1964. It's been claimed this was a one-time deal, but how long it stayed in Hawaii is in question. While this photo shows it lettered, a National Dragster pic (7/10-64) from this early July race clearly depicts an unlettered car. We do know that Ed Schartman raced this same car (once more re-lettered) back on the mainland at the '64 Indy Nationals. Driver Earle "Safari" Char got his monicker from his involvement in the famous African "Safari" Comets durability run. Hawaii Raceway Park 7/05/64 - RT |

Notes: Original Thunderbolt S/S car. Lawton reset the NHRA Super Stock record to 11.60 at Connecticut on September 20. The speed on the run was 126.05. Earlier set 11.69/122.64 National Records at Cecil County 1964. Lawton's Thunderbolt was tearing up the Hemis in October. He beat Al Eckstrand's "Lawman" three straight, and then the following week (October 18), he was at Charlestown Dragway in Rhode Island where he met up with Bill Flynn in the "Highlander" Plymouth. Lawton once again won three straight with a best of 10.9/130.61 (both track records). (It should be noted that match race times involved significant 'super tuning' - the 427 T Bolt S/S times were behind the Race Hemi ETs by the Indy Nationals - Lindamood in a Hemi won Top Stock with an 11.31). |

Notes: One of two '64 A/FX Falcons built by DST at the behest of Ford. The first went to Dick Brannan. Match racer Phil Bonner had purchased his own car and was aiming to replicate this effort when Ford decided it made sense to bring him into the fold. These Falcons served as the test bed for the soon-to-come '65 Mustang factory experimental effort. - RT | Bonner faced Malcolm Durham for a best of five match race at 75/80 Dragway on September 11. He won the first two races with runs of 11.09/124.21 and 11.07/125.81 before Durham got one back in the third race. Phil wrapped up the match in the fourth race. On September 20, Phil was at Richmond Dragway for a best of five match race with Durham. Bonner warmed up for the match with a 10.85/125.52. Phil needed only three passes to win the match as he won three straight with times of 10.76/126.22, 10.75/125.69, and 10.95/126.75. |

Notes: Dodge Coronet as a model ended in 1959 and picked up again in 1965. If this was a Coronet in 1964, it must have been an early version of the 1965 model year. |

Notes: The original Little Red Wagon was built by Jim Schaeffer and John Collier, along with some engineers from the Dodge Truck Division, with Dick Branstner and Roger Lindamood responsible for the design and installation of the then-unique engine subframe. They were responsible for tuning as well. The quoted time was the shakedown run, with the Ramchargers' Jim Thornton at the wheel. The truck swapped out a slant-six for a new 426 Dodge hemi with dual quads and a Torqueflite trans. Weight was 2,670 pounds, but that was expected to drop slightly with the adition of lightweight fiberglass doors. Note the white-painted steel wheels used early on. The truck was built to run in the A/FX class, but an early tendency to pull accidental wheelstands caused those plans to change. The rest, as they say, is history. |
