Notes: Bill started his season with a big win at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On Friday, his 11.07 was the second quickest Mustang behind Len Richter's 10.94. They were all chasing "Dyno Don" Nicholson, who had run 10.90 in his Comet. Thirteen cars showed for the Factory Stock Eliminator. Lawton was paired against Nicholson in the first round, as luck would have it. The Comet broke, and Lawton advanced with an 11.59. In round two, he improved to 10.95, and in the semifinal, his 10.93/127.84 beat Tommy Grove's 10.95/126.05. He faced Richter in the final, and Len's car failed to fire, so Bill ran 10.92/128.20 for the victory. The "Tasca Ford" was not run again until March 28, when Lawton showed up at Connecticut's opener. Ford had put a hold on match race competition for 30 days, and Bill was here for some text passes. His best times were 10.66/130.93. On May 30, Dover held a three-car race. Lawton came off the trail and warmed up with a 10.36. In his first race, his 10.35/134.20 easily covered Doc Burgess' 10.70/132 in the "Black Arrow." He ran the "Larsen Ford" Mustang driven by Bob Hamilton in the next race. Once again, Lawton made it look easy as his 10.37/136.20 covered Bob's 10.92/123. For the final race, he lined back up against Burgess' Plymouth. Lawton really laid down a number as his 10.31 beat Doc's 10.63. He ran Eddie Schartman's Comet at Connecticut on June 13, where he won all three races with a best of 10.53/132.25 compared to Ed's best of 10.82/125. Lawton was at Maple Grove on July 30 for what was supposed to be a match race against Bob Harrop's "Flying Carpet" Dodge. This was in the midst of the factory war between Chrysler's altered wheelbase cars and Ford's SOHC-powered Mustangs. Ford wanted the Dodge to run with more weight, and Chrysler said no. So Bill had no competition. But Malcolm Durham was there with his altered wheelbase Chevelle and said he would race in Harrop's place. So the two lined up for the first race, Durham fouled, but Lawton stopped and said they would try again. This time they left together, but Malcolm lost a clutch. The next race saw Malcolm foul again, and once again, Bill showed he was a sportsman by letting the two line up again. This time the Chevelle broke its rear end. After several hours to fix, the two came back for their last race. This time, there were no red lights, and Lawton's A/FX track records on 10.49/132.15 beat the Chevy's 11.16/125. Notes: Phil Bonner reset the NHRA A/FX record to 10.90 in April. On May 1, Phil was at Cecil County. He was supposed to run Malcolm Durham in a best of three match, but Malcolm failed to show. Phil ended up running his Mustang against three sportsman racers. Bonner ran a best of 10.46/132.45 in winning all three races. On June 25, he raced Dick Harell at 75/89 Maryland. Phil won all three of their races with times of 10.67/132.35,10.42 and 10.52. The next day, Durham showed up for his match against Bonner at York, but the Chevelle had problems on all the runs, and he lost the match to Phil's Mustang, which ran 10.52/132.35 and 10.45/133. |

Notes: While his better-known Mercury team members wielded 427 wedges in their lightened Cyclones, Doug Nash (successfully) followed the path less travelled, going the smallblock 289, 4-speed route. He would later be known for his one-of-a-kind, lightweight "Bronco Buster" funny truck, and for developing the renowned Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. |

Notes: Leal had been driving Super Stock 409 Chevies in '62 and '63. For the '64 season, he switched to the Ford Thunderbolt with the 427. While he ran well with the Ford, he saw just how strong the Hemi's were and wanted one for the '65 season. Plymouth was quite happy to have Leal join their team as it got one of its main competitors on its side. Notes: Delorean received one of the four 427 SOHC-powered factory Comet A/FXers produced in 1965. The others went to Nicholson, Beswick and Proffitt. Aditional cars were built and furnished with the tried-and-true 427 Hi-Riser mill, with some of these converting to Cammer power later in the season. With the ascendancy of the AWB Mopar teams it was common for the once-dominant Comets to undergo wheelbase alterations and ad Hilborn injectors to stay competitive. Delorean's car was reported to have sported Hilborn injectors on fuel later in the season, but this picture seems to show a still-carbureted racecar. - RT |

Notes: Four factory '65 Comets with the 427 SOHC engine went to Nicholson, Proffit, Beswick and DeLorean. A number of others (like this one) were outfitted with the 427 Hi-riser wedge. Some were retrofitted with the Cammer as that engine became more available. This entry reflects the car in season-opener, legal A/FX trim. - RT |

Notes: Jenkins first national win was at the '65 NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, where he took both S/SA trophy and Top Stock Eliminator too. His winning 11.39 ET was quickest stocker time of the meet. Jenkins had a falling out with the Chrysler reps during the year because he would not share all his tuning secrets with them. This led to his return to Chevrolet racecars, and the start of his most celebrated era. - RT | Photo is of car as it appears in 2013. Replace with photo from original year when available. |

Notes: Neal purchased his new 1961 Corvette and started his drag racing career at Vargo Dragway near Perkasie, Pa. from 1961 to 1965. He won his class over 25 times and street eliminator over 12 times. After modifications for 1966 The Red Baron with a 350ci. Ran as a CM/SP at Kel Reca, a 1/8 mile track near Hometown, Pa. Neal won his class, street eliminator, top time and speed there many times in 1966 and 1967. This was the first Corvette Neal ran as The Red Baron. He still owns the car and it has a 427 big block in it. Vargo Dragway reunion organizers chose the 61 Vette to be the poster car for the 2017 show. Neal installed new lettering on the Baron for the show and it was displayed on the starting line. |

Notes: Car dealer Harry Baker bought this '64 440 from George Cutler in Nov. '64 after it took a class win at the US Nationals. He got Jim Hall to do the driving until Hall left his employment in April. After that, his 17-year-old son, Tim, took over driving duties.
