Notes: Roberta was at Maryland International on June 21 for the second NHRA Division 1 race. A 7.40/186.33 qualified to the "bump" for the eight-car field, and in the first round, she lost fire on the line against Carol Burkett. AKA Baby Imp. Note this car has Night Wind on the spoiler. |

Notes: Roberta was driving her Firebird by May when she showed up at Cecil County for an eight-car show. In the opening round, her 7.47/171.42 beat Paul Hall's 7.77/169 but in the semi-finals, her 7.36/166.60 lost to eventual winner Leroy Dewdney's 6.69/207. | Schultz qualified on the bump for the 8 car field at NHRA WWCS at Budds Creek with a 7.183/194.80 & in the first round drew #4 qualifier Bunny Burkett where Schultz's 7.15/189.07 was no match for Bunny's 6.87/202.93. |

Notes: Ron Pellegrini built this Charger for Don Schumacher. He ordered an R&B chassis and a fiberglass Charger body. The 426 Hemi was built by Walt Ulrich, who had worked for Roger Lindamood in the past. With just a 60% load of nitro, Schumacher ran 8.89/163.86 on an early run. Late-model hemi, Torqueflite trans. One of the nicest first-gen AWB Chargers. This car preceded his first flopper. Photo from late '66. Confirm aspiration and fuel. - Danny White | I don't believe this car ever ran with a blower. - RT |

Notes: One of the backflip funny cars that Romeo Palamides built, see Beswick for another. Listed times from early in 1968. | Don Schumacher's new ride for '68 was this 120" Romeo Palamides built, rear-engined Charger. The body was full sized built by Fiberglass Ltd. It used a 426 Hemi filled with M/T rods, Forgedtrue pistons, and a Crane cam. The heads were reworked by Gary Brown. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and the GMC 6/71 was prepared by Don Hampton and used a Pete Robinson case. Up top sat a Hilborn injection unit. The TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Mopar rear with 3.54 gears. An early run on 45% nitro got Don an 8.12 time slip. | Also ran 8.19 at Minnesota Dragways. |

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight cars. But at one time, he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of fuel funny cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Bros. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides-built cars, including a front-hinge flip-top funny car. - BS | Don Schumacher really started to run well when crew chief John Hogan came on board in July. Things didn't start so well when Don drove the car into the ditch during the Super Stock Nationals, and the team showed up at Detroit on July 26 with the front of the car wearing primer. A blown transmission on a warm-up run was followed by an off-pace 8.90 in the opening round of the eight-car show that lost to Bruce Larson. The next day (July 26), Detroit ran them again, only now they expanded the field to twelve cars. In the first round, Don's 7.82/182.18 beat Bob Fulp in the "Limefire." He got to solo in round two and made an easy 13.02 pass. In the semi-final, he had trouble and shut down to 11.73/78 in a loss to Larson's 8.27/166. Sunday was the last day for the three-day event at Detroit, and this time Schumacher went all the way. An off-pace 8.42/170.77 defeated Fulp's equally troubled 8.46/172 in the first round. In the second round, his 7.89/181.80 took out Mike Burkhart's 7.91/153. He got some revenge over Larson in the semi-final by running 7.78/183 over Bruce's 7.79/182. In the final, he faced Kelly Chadwick, and his 7.93/184.42 got the victory over Chadwick's 8.27/145. |

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight-cars. But at one time he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of AA/Funny Cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Stamping Co. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides built cars, including a front-hinge flip top funny car. The Barracuda ran a best of 7.22/205 in 1969 as No. 1 qualifier, Low ET at NHRA Nationals, Indy. - Danny White | Don started the year by qualifying #1 with a 7.50 at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A first-round 7.59/195.64 beat Lew Arrington's 8.06/195. In the second round, a 7.52/198.66 took care of Jim Liberman's ailing Nova and in the semifinal he set a 7.44 track record at 198.66 over a fouling Dick Bourgeois. In the final, a blown trans stopped his march to victory. He again qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.67/194.38. He was upset by a new car in the first round, Danny Ongais. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, Don could only muster an 8.02/195.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying second. A first-round 8.24 beat a crossed-up Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, but an 8.10 by Rich Siroonian in round two stopped his 8.12/191.08. On February 9 at OCIR for the second All-Pro race, he qualified fourth with a 7.63/192.30 and he made it into the final, meeting Siroonian who dropped a 7.39/195 bombshell on him. The following week on February 16 for the Stardust Open at Las Vegas he made it into the semifinal before Ongais' 7.88/193 put him on the trailer. He set Top Speed at 7.72/199.11 in qualifying fourth at Riverside for the HRM Championships, but he lost fire in the first round. On March 29 he competed in the final OCIR All-Pro race and had an easy first-round when Dave Beebe broke. In the semis against Ongais, both cars ran 7.71, but Don was disqualified for crossing the centerline. Jim Liberman faced Schumacher at a match race at Connecticut on April 6 and Jim beat Don three straight. A rematch was set for April 19 at Blaney. Liberman won the first race and Don's 8.00/191 won the second over JJ's 8.07/182. So both were loaded for bear for the final race. Jim's 8.00/182 won over Schumacher's track records of 7.94/190. At Aquasco's fourth annual Funny Car Invitational on May 4, Don ran a first-round 7.95/189.86 over George Reese, but Liberman's Low ET 7.81/189 shot in the semifinal beat his 7.98/191.88. Another match race was run on May 10 at York US 30 against Eddie Schartman. Don beat Schartman two straight before racing the backup car of Al Graeber and setting track records of 7.42/196.92. On May 27, Aquasco held an eight-car show and Don won his first-round race with a 7.84/194.38 and in the semifinal his 8.02/189.06 beat Ron Rivero who lost a transmission. Unfortunately, Schumacher also lost a trans so he was unable to make the final. He went to US 131, Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 29, but he got out-of-shape in the first round, and lost to Gary Dyer's 7.55/193. Minnesota held a six car show on June 1, and Don broke against Hedrick (7.75/188) in his first race. In his second race, he beat Clare Sanders' 8.31/175 with a 7.58/194.80 (Top Speed). In his third race, he got out-of-shape and lost to Dick Loehr's 7.59/193. He got a big win at Aquasco on June 22 for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Malcolm Durham's 8.05/186 in the first round, with a 7.77/194.38. Don singled in the semifinal with a 7.98/196.50 (Top Speed). In the final he set Low ET at 7.68/195.22 in beating Liberman's 7.75/194. On July 19, Don raced at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. He beat the ailing Colt 45 in the first round, with a 9.80/126.93, but lost to John Dekker's 8.74/173 in the semifinal with a 9.00/155.70. At the Cars Magazine meet, he ran a first-round 7.54 at a track speed record of 201.34 over Frank Federici, but he lost fire on the line against Frank Oglesby in the second round. He had a rare (for him) first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Randy Walls' 7.69/180 beat Don's 7.86/191.08. At the next event, the AHRA Nationals at York on August 17, he more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the race with a final 7.39/198.22 over a fouling Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian. He set Top Speed at 200.88 and had beaten Terry Hedrick in the second round and ran a 7.30 in the semifinals while beating Dick Harrell's 7.39. At the US Nationals on September 1, Don qualified second with a 7.27 at only 189.47, and a first-round 7.22/204 over Jess Tyree's 7.46/199 was good for Low ET of the meet. But against Bruce Larson in the second round, he lost a transmission putting him out of the show. A big match race against Rich Siroonian was run at Irwindale on October 4 and Don won the first race with a 7.72/195.64 over Rich's 7.80/191. But Siroonian came back to win the next two races with runs of 7.63/201 and 7.43/204 over Schumacher's 7.65/197.26 and 7.69/200.44. On October 11, OCIR held its Funny Car Invitational event with eight-cars going for the win. Don advanced past the first-round when Ed Lenarth fouled and in the semifinal, a 7.52- 201.79 lost to Pat Minick's 7.40/200. He didn't do very well on October 18 at the Irwindale East/West meet when he lost to Ron Leslie's 7.84/185 in the first round, knocking him into the consolation round where be again lost in the first round. This time a 7.40/200 by Gas Ronda beat his 7.83/183.83. He ran much better the following day (October 19) at the Fremont Fallnationals, where a first-round 7.50/185.56 sent Terry Hedrick's 7.75/175 to the trailer. A semifinal 7.58/196.92 advanced when Siroonian lost a trans. In the final, a 7.53/198.22 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.71/186.32 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang. That was followed by another win on October 25 over a sixteen-car field at Lions for the East/West Championships. A first-round 7.49/188.67 beat Randy Walls' 7.59/188, and a round two 7.52/182.92 advanced when Lenarth broke. In the final he met Siroonian and a 7.32/193.96 beat Rich's ailing 9.54/79. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but failed to get to the finals. A 7.55 on November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet qualified him first on the Chrysler team. But the following week (November 16) he won only one of his three races. A 7.57/197.80 beat Danny Ongais' 7.62/191. In his second race Terry Hedrick's 7.46/188 beat Don's 7.50/195.65. In his final race he exploded a trans against Mike Van Sant in the Invader. He ran well on November 9 at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions. He ran a 7.60/188.10 over Liberman's 7.60/191 and a semifinal 7.56/187.50 beat Snow who had driveline problems. In the final, Larry Reyes 7.46/195 was too much for Schumacher's 7.84/166.66. - Ron Howard |

Notes: This is the car that Don began the 1970 season with, it was replaced in August by the Buttera built Cuda that won Indy. - TN | Schumacher had his new 'Cuda at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. Things didn't go so well as in his first-round race against Dick Bourgeois he broke a rear end and was done for the rest of the day. On Jan 4 he was at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He ran two cars at the meet, his old 'Cuda with Arnie Behling driving, and his new car driven by himself. The new car failed to qualify, but eighth qualifier Gas Ronda had blown a transmission and was unable to run so Don replaced him in the show. Unfortunately, in the first round, he broke a driveshaft and lost to Charlie Allen. The Behling driven car lasted until the semifinals, but did set Low ET at 7.43. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25, Don qualified with a 7.64. He beat Tom Prock's 7.72 in the first round, with a 7.70, but in round two, a transmission let go and Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" advanced. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but due to a tricky track surface, he failed to qualify even though the "bump" was only a 7.74. |

Notes: This car made its debut in August and made shakedown runs at OCIR before heading east for the NHRA Nationals. At Indy Don used consistent low seven second times to capture his first NHRA National Event. He beat Leroy Goldstein (Ramchargers) in the final 7.001/214.79 to a losing 7.14/211.26. | Don debuted this car at OCIR on August 29 for an eight-car show. He ran really well, qualifying #1 with a 7.02/211.76 (Top Speed and a track record), well ahead of Mike Snively's 7.19 in the #2 spot. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.93 (track record) at 210.28 to beat alternate Johnny Wright in the "Fiberglass Trends" Javelin. Unfortunately, on that pass, Don shelled a rear axle and was unable to compete in the semifinals. A week later (September 7), he got his big win at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Things didn't start out so well as on a Thursday qualifying attempt, Don lost a motor. But after installing a new one he qualified with a 7.07 and in the first round, his 7.17 beat Leonard Hughes quicker 7.10. In the second round, he ran another 7.07 at 210.28 to beat Jay Howell's 7.64/152 in Don Prudhomme's 'Cuda. Schumacher picked up to a 7.01/212.26 in the semifinals to beat Bobby Rowe's 7.18/205 in the "Super Duster" and in the final, he was just a tick of the clock away from the "sixes" with a 7.00/214.79 (Top Speed) that beat Leroy Goldstein's 7.14/211 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger for the title. It should also be noted that Schumacher had hired back his former crew chief, John Hogan, to help with his new car. | Best NHRA time was the 7.001/214.79. |
