Notes: 1972 URC built his & my back motor AA/FD. I have been told mine was #1 with split 2 piece back wing. Dan Olson wing, Hanna Mag body, Tom Stratton paint. I still use same paint scheme now. Info from John Blanchard on Nitroland. ET and MPH run at Lions Last Drag Race. Quickest, fastest iron 392 in history. (When was 6.02 run during the race? Event results show 6.23 in qualifying and shut off loss in first-round. bp) (When & where was the 6.02 run?) | John Blanchard had this car built in three months at a cost of only $5,500. He built the 1,500 hp 392 Hemi himself. The block was bored .030" and a 1/2" stroker crank was used. Howards rods supported 8:1 Venolia pistons and Howards also supplied the cam. Cylinder Head Research got the nod for doing the cylinder heads. A Marc Danekas prepared GMC-6/71 sat on a Cragar manifold and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. A 11" triple-disc Hays clutch fed the power through a Speed Products Engineering direct drive to a 3.90 rear. |

Notes: Ran 6.69 at Orange County's Big 4 event on 5/12/73. Denver qualified in the bump position with a 6.63 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. In the first round, his 6.81 lost to eventual winner Frank Prock's 6.61. He then went to Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.47/219.51 qualified #20, but in the opening round, John Wiebe's 6.31/224 stopped his 6.60/215.82. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #9 in the 32 car field with a 6.94/223.32. In round two, he beat Don Prudhomme's 6.88 with a 6.71. Schutz had problems on the line in the third round, and eventual winner Don Garlits advanced with an easy 9.61. His next big event was the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #18 there, and in the opening round, he ran Jerry Ruth. Unfortunately, Schutz blew his engine in their race, and Ruth advanced at 7.10. Denver qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He lost to Herm Petersen in the opening round. Schutz did not race at the NHRA Gatornationals, but he was at OCIR on March 24 for the final All-Pro race. A 6.39 qualified him #5 in the sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 6.36/212.26 beat Rick Ramsey. An even better 6.35/229.59 in round two fell to Petersen's 6.28/229. |

Notes: Schultz was at Ontario Motor Speedway's New Year's Day race. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.24/217. In the first round, he beat Ray Stutz with a 6.25/204. In round two, he got a solo as Larry Dixon had broken some parts in his first-round race and could not return for round two. Denver ran 6.52 to advance. He had an excellent race against James Warren in the semifinals that saw his quicker 6.09/227 lose to Warren's 6.10/204. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.98/231.36 qualified #10. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Beck in the first round. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #20 in the 32 car field. A first-round 6.11/213.27 beat Jim Barnard, who had to shut down with lots of tire shake. In round two, Shorty Leventon fouled against him, and he blew the motor on a 7.36 pass. Due to the blown engine, Schultz could not return for his round three match against Dwight Salisbury. |

Notes: The team joined the NHRA tour at the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, where they were the first alternate with a 5.910/233.16. They made the show at the Cajun Nats, qualifying #7 at 5.767/236.22. Shirley Muldowney took them out in round one, 5.82/238 to 6.051/230.17. Schutz qualified #4 at Bristol in the eight-car field for the IHRA Springnationals. An opening round 5.74/226.70 beat Jack Ostrander, but he lost to Richard Tharp in the semifinal. The following week (June 12), Denver qualified #6 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.777/241.28. He improved to 5.700/245.90 in the first round, while beating Chris Karamesines' 5.90/238. But in round two, he fouled and shut down to a 6.18 loss to the eventual winner Tharp, who saw the red light and advanced with an 8.76. In July, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.717/245.23 but an off-pace 6.15/181.45 lost to Connie Kalitta's 5.81/244 in the opening round. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where a 6.013/231.36 was the first alternate for the eight-car show. The team was also the first alternate at the Golden Gate Nats with a 5.738/241.28. Denver qualified #9 at the World Finals at 5.689/241.28, but he lost in the first round, to Gary Beck, 5.43/257 to 5.770/233.76. An excellent year on the NHRA trail. Photo from 1983 Springnationals, Columbus, Ohio. This was purportedly a car using 'ground effects' for aerodynamics. Denver also ran 5.746/243.24 at IHRA Bristol Spring. |

This was purportedly a car using 'ground effects' for aerodynamics. | This was an M&S/Sherm Gunn car debuted at OCIR in mid-'82. There was adjustable T-lever along the top of the chassis, through a slot in the body, to adjust the ground effects. Never saw it with this paint job. This one clearly became the 2nd Harmon and Stuart dragster that replaced their original '81 Lucille Lee/Danekas car. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Denver ran one NHRA national event in 1984, qualifying #8 at the World Finals at 5.701/249.30. He beat Ralph Pearson in round one, with a 12-second shutoff after Pearson lost fire. Shannon Stuart defeated Denver in round two, 5.69/250 to 5.957/243.90. Assuming Denver was in the Raisin Express, but that needs confirmation. Former Jim Bernard Northwind. |

Notes: Low qualifier at Bakersfield March Meet 3/98 at 6.01. | That 6.01 was with a 205 mph clocking - the wheels weren't balanced properly - it should have been a 5 sec run which was a big deal at that time. - Mark Leigh |
