Dave was runner-up to Garlits at Ontario 1974. It was in this car. He ran 6.101/241.93, but lost on a holeshot. Ran 6.023 and 6.097 at Ontario, shutting off early until the final. Ran 6.21 at Sanair, 6.16 at Gainesville, 6.13 at Columbus, 6.17 at Englishtown, 6.24 at Indy, 5.99 at Ontario. | Settles was the new driver of the "Candies and Hughes" Top Fuel car for '74. The team started the year by failing to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.40 best. They picked up considerably by the time they got to Gainesville for the Gatornationals in March. Dave ran 6.18/237.46 to qualify #2. A first-round 6.29 beat Billy Campbell and a 6.22 beat Mike Wagoner in round two. In the semifinals, a 6.16/221.67 advanced when Dale Funk broke a throttle cable and in the final he met up with two time US Nationals champion, Gary Beck. Dave beat Dan Rightsell and Mike Tarter in the first two rounds before setting Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.37/232.55 that beat Marshell Love's 6.44/228 in the Carroll Brothers car. A 6.13/234.98 qualified the team #3 at the NHRA Springnationals and in round one, Settles beat Clayton Harris with a 6.14/222.77. In round two, a tire smoking 6.50/230.76 lost to Jim Bucher's 6.46/225. Best NHRA times were 5.993/242.58 at Englishtown (Top Speed). Duplicated 242.58 at the World Finals). Where was the 5.98 run?

Notes: Ran at 1975 Winternationals. We need confirmation of best ET. qualified in the field that had a 6.09 bump. They went quicker than that, but need to know how much. | Dave started the '75 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals and although he qualified he lost early. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals a week later (February 2), the "Candies and Hughes" team had some problems in qualifying on Sat when they blew an engine. Another "bullet" was installed and Settles ran 5.98 to qualify #5. In the first round John Wiebe smoked the tires against him and Dave advanced with a 6.93. In the second round his 6.20/226.13 beat Paul Longenecker and a semifinal 6.25/211.00 took out Herm Petersen. He faced Don Garlits in the final and unfortunately, Settles had problems and shut off to 14.08/51.90 in a loss to Garlits' 6.23/223. The team did not compete at Bakersfield for the March Meet, but they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. They used up 28 pistons just in qualifying. Dave barely made the field, running 6.26/236.22 to qualify on the "bump" for the sixteen-car show. He soloed in round one, when Marshall Love failed to fire, but in round two he slowed to an off-pace 6.64 that lost to Marvin Graham's 6.16. Settles attempted to qualify at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis, but he ended up as the second alternate for the eight-car show. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.14/234.37 qualified #8 and in round one, Settles' 6.16/229.59 beat Ted Wolf's 6.28/227 in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car. In round two Clayton Harris' 6.06/227 stopped his 6.21/231.95. The team failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but they got a victory at Tri-City for the fourth NHRA Division 3 race. Dave qualified #1 with a 6.23 and then improved to 6.190215.31 in the first round, over Longenecker. He made an easy run in the semifinals before setting Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.17/236.22 in stopping Wolf. The team made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals and Settles made it into the semifinals before his 6.12/229.59 lost to eventual winner Garlits' 5.89/245.

Notes: Dave was at Tri-City in June for a six-car race. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In the first race, his 6.84/212.26 lost to Tom Prock's 6.40/221. In his second race, he improved to 6.46/224.43 to defeat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, his time was not good enough to advance to the final. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.29 qualified second to Denny Savage's 6.28. He lost fire in the first round, giving his opponent, Les Cassidy, a solo into round two. In July, he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Settles' 6.13 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. Another strong run of 6.14/217.91 beat Al Bergler's 6.44/216 in the opening round, but in the semifinals, Tom Anderson's 6.12/229 beat his 6.17/215.32. But the wait was worth it, as the car really performed. Dave Settles was chosen to drive and the team started off with a victory at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Dave qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.86/239.36. But that was the slowest the car ran on the weekend. He opened up with a 5.84 over Walt Barbin and in the semifinals, he set the track record with a 5.77 at 243.90 to beat Bobby Hilton in the "Jim and Allison Lee" car at 5.89/237. He faced #2 qualifier Johnny Abbott in the final and a strong 5.79/246.57 (new track speed record) beat Abbott's 5.90/240. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals at Denver, the high altitude slowed the car to a 6.16/233.16 during qualifying, but it was enough to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. Settles lasted until the semifinals before he lost to eventual winner Kelly Brown. Dave showed that his times from Bristol were no fluke as he qualified #1 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.82 (Low ET) at 246.57. Another 5.82 at 234 in the first round, beat Frank Bradley and in the second round Dave Uyehara lost fire, so Settles advanced with a 5.92 single. He beat Don Garlits' 5.98 in the semifinals with a 5.85/245. Dave was definitely the car to beat as no other car had run 5.8s in eliminations. His final round opponent was Jeb Allen who had run a 5.96 in qualifying, but was stuck in the sixes during eliminations. But in the final, the "Blue Max" broke a transmission and Jeb ran 6.17/227 for the victory. A week later (July 22), the team was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Once again Dave qualified #1, this time with a 5.81. He beat Rob Bruins in the opening round and in the semifinals, he set Low ET with another 5.77 at 241.93 in beating Clayton Harris' 6.07. He faced Garlits in the final and the "old man" showed he still had great reflexes by winning their race with a 5.88/245 over Settles' quicker 5.84/241.28.

Notes: Dave met Ray through some boat racing friends. Ray wanted Dave to build a car and Dave said he could tune it and drive it, too. Ray agreed and the deal was done. - Dave Settles, Racin & Rockin Radio, 7/01/13 | Dave qualified #2 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.81. A first-round 5.90 at just 210 beat Jody Smart's 5.99/242 while in round two his 5.96 beat Johnny Abbott's 6.13. He lost in the semifinals where his 5.94 fell to Jeb Allen's 5.86. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet that was run in February He qualified #7 with a 6.00/221.67, but the race was postponed one week due to rain and he was unable to run the following week. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.85/235.60 qualified #10. A first-round 6.02/216.34 beat Marvin Graham and in round two his 5.89/225.56 took out David Pace. For the second NHRA race in a row, Dave made it to the semifinals. Unfortunately, that was as far as he got as he had problems in his run against Shirley Muldowney and shut off to 7.64 while she moved into the final with a 5.79.

Notes: Joey qualified #5 in the 32 car field for the NHRA US Nationals at Indy with a 6.66/207.85. In the first round of eliminations, opponent Jerry Gwynn broke and Severance ran an easy 7.02/169.49 to advance. In round two, he ran 6.61/209.79 to beat Butch Osmon's 6.97/196. He dipped into the 6.5s in round three with a 6.58 over Joe Amato and in the semifinals, his 6.64/209.79 took out Ben Griffin at 7.02/199. This put him into the final against Billy Williams. Billy had run 6.5s in every round except for the first and was favored to win. Sure enough, another 6.57/209 beat Joey's 6.70/210.77 for the title. He then went to Jackson County Sports Park for the final NHRA Division 6 race. He defeated Bob Lundsford in the final with a 6.63/209.79, wrapping up the NHRA Division 6 title. That was followed by a trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Joey ran 6.47/212.21 to qualify #2 behind William's strong 6.42/211. These two would again meet in the final. An opening round 6.49/212.26 beat Ricky Ruiz and in round two, a 6.46/213.27 stopped Denny Martinez at 6.67/194. He fell off to 6.53/211.76 in the semifinals, but it was more than enough to beat Bucky Austin's 6.71/200. Once again, Williams had the advantage going into the final as his best in eliminations had been 6.40 and that came in his semifinal win. Williams did win again, but it was closer this time. Both cars ran 212.26, but Billy's 6.43 got there ahead of Joey's 6.50. It seemed like these two were headed for another showdown at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals when they again qualified one-two. Williams led the field with a 6.54/211, but this time he was more than a tenth ahead of Severance's 6.68/209.79. Joey beat A.J. Seruntine in the first round, with a 6.88/206.89, but in round two, he fouled away a 6.85/209.30 against Brian Raymer.
