Notes: Wild Willie's Chevy powered nitro funny car of 1973 was definitely not competitive on the national match race circuit. This was due to numerous minor "bugs." He spent most of the tour year sorting them out before getting any full passes worth recording. Being a master mechanic that could change his own pistons in his x-Don Garlits tow truck in the middle of nowhere Arizona desert was certainly a plus. But changing injectors from Hillborn to Enderle, fuel tanks that were not properly vented, losing blower belts and burning pistons among other things almost every run were some of his race car's problems. These constant disruptions prevented any match race wins. Despite the terrible year he was having, the worst of his NHRA top 50 driver career, The Wild Man lived up to his "handle." He surprised many of his opponents with great hole shots, come from behind "wins" to the eighth-mile mark :} and far out of shape two-handed driving, except when shifting of course somewhere in the mid range. However, his funny car "act" with ultra wild out of control smokey burnouts, sometimes in the other guy's lane, incredible wheels up launches and typical seat of the pants driving was extremely popular with the fans then. In my opinion, his "Nitro Act" was worth more than several of the more popular and powerful Chrysler stroked Hemi Funny cars of that day who were making twice as much or more booked in money than him. Willie was match racing that year on less than a dollar, a shoestring and a bucket of water. :} It was more like he was racing in the Funny Car Wars back in that day with nothing but a wing and a prayer. :} - Cliff Tarpy aka Pete Allen - greenhorn crewman.

Notes: My lifelong racing pal since 1957, Larry Rayl of Topeka, Kansas and I were at Orange County International's "Super Track" for their All Pro Championships on February 14, 1971. The late great "Big John" Mazmanian had two Funny Car entries. Rich Siroonian FC 717, Big John's late great nephew, drove the familiar Woody Gilmore chassied, Keith Black powered, candy red 'Cuda. And the all new Woody built mini 'Cuda with the gold trim shown in Larry's nice pit photo was driven by John's new No.2 driver, Larry "Pineapple" Reyes FC 201, who had already run this car at the recent 1971 NHRA Pomona Winternationals. Larry Reyes was my "pioneer main man" of Nitro Funny Cars at the time. Larry's "pioneer main man", Don the Snake Prudhomme stole the OCIR All Pro Funny Car show that day by saving his best for last and winning with a then mind boggling dragster time of 6.62 ET at 226.13 mph in his "Lil'John" Butera built, Keith Black 426 Hemi powered 'Cuda. In comparison, Big John's Keith Black 426 Hemi 'Cuda Funny Cars only ran in the 6.80's. And Tony Nancy's dragster had Low ET of the meet at 6.46 at 232.55 mph. However, Mr. "C" Gary Cochran's car won top fuel dragster. Mazmanian's two car plan for 1971, was for Reyes to tour back east with the new car and the late great "Sir" Rich Siroonian would join him at the many National meets with the older 'Cuda. After The March Meet at Bakersfield, CA. where Siroonian drove instead of Reyes; Mike Snively FC 707 took over the reigns of this same mini 'Cuda Funny Car, with all new Rueben candy red paint and lettering and Maz sold the old car. Larry and I again saw the new 'Cuda with Snively driving at Dallas, Texas at the NHRA Spring Nationals. Good memories. -Cliff Tarpy
