Notes: The Beachcomber Charger crashed at US 30 Dragstrip near Gary, IN in 1973 (I think). We used to have the whole side of the car, wheel well to wheel well, hanging in our basement after my brother brought it home after the crash. It had the car name with a surfer riding a wave on the side. |

Notes: Toward the end of the '66 season, after their popular altered-wheelbase 4/4/2 was damaged in a towing accident that destroyed the trailer and Olds 98 tow car, Lutz & Lundberg rolled up their sleeves and took the opportunity to update the 4/4/2. Damaged sheet metal was replaced, the engine was lowered in the chassis, and a new black paint job (with gold leaf lettering) replaced the red coat from the previous season. The car was raced through the '67 season and put up for sale at the end of that year's Indy Nationals. (Driver Jim Lutz later recounted sitting in staging waiting to run when a Mustang funny caught a gust of wind and went airborne in the lights, killing driver Del Heinelt). On its run, the 4/4/2 got loose on the top end too, leading to the immediate decision by the team to get out of funnies altogether.) The car was later found in an Indiana barn and restored in the early 2000s. (Note: Times quoted are for the '66. While fairly representative, they are not necessarily the car's fastest, quickest.) - RT |

Notes: 1971 Woody car replaced the heavy '70 Cuda. Qualified second at Indy 9/71 with a 6.59 and won the race, defeating Dale Pulde with an ET of 6.64 at 223.32 mph. The win at the 1971 NHRA Nationals was the first for Ed McCulloch and was a springboard for his dominating 1972 season. The photo was taken late in 1971 at Ontario during the NHRA Supernationals and shows the car shortly after signing Revell as a sponsor. |
