Notes: Quickest ET at the time, Beeline AHRA. Chris qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with the 7.42 but lost to Tom Hoover's 7.78/193.96 in the first round, with a 7.80/196.92. He also qualified #1 with a 7.76 (Low ET) at Pomona on March 28 for a sixteen-car UDRA meet. Bill Leavitt's 7.89/192.70 stopped him in the first round, but Chris' losing 7.95/203.16 held for Top Speed. In June, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 7.67/202.70 qualified Chris third, and on Saturday's AA/FD class runoffs, a 7.80/200.88 beat Danny Ongais (7.99/192.70), who fouled. A second-round 7.67/202.70 advanced when the Ramchargers broke, and a 7.93/202.70 got him into the class runoff with Maynard Rupp. There Chris' engine let go, and Rupp won with a 7.99/142.40. Made the finals at NHRA Bristol 65 with a 7.67/202.70 best. Photo from 7/67. |

Notes: Bill Walsh took over driving for Don Schumacher at Ennis Fall and Houston Fall in 2000. That was because Tony Schumacher had a horrific crash at Memphis on a qualifying pass when his wing broke near the finish line sending the car into and over the right side retaining wall. The car disintegrated except for the cockpit which continued flipping through the grass and nearly hit a huge tree. Remarkably Tony's only major injury was his broken left leg. Since Tony was leading Gary Scelzi in a fairly tight points race for the Championship, Tony attempted to run the Houston race just 3 weeks after the Memphis crash. Dallas was rescheduled, due to weather, from the weekend prior to Houston until the weekend after Houston. After his solo qualifying attempt, Tony said that he didn't feel comfortable enough in the car to risk his or, more importantly, another driver's life and voluntarily withdrew himself from competition. Tony returned at the finals that year and still finished second in the points to Scelzi. - Mitch Osika |

Notes: Despite being slower than many alternate entries, Chip took advantage of an NHRA rule that allowed the defending champ to make the field. Chip ran 6.739/186.33 for the 16th slot, leaving Dick LaHaie outside the field at 6.501! Even worse, the 15th qualifier went 6.501 as well but had gone three MPH faster than Dick. In round one, Chip had problems and did not start, sending Marvin Schwartz on to round two. This was Chip's only NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: In 1982, Johnny ran 5.54 in Gary, Indiana (AHRA), then ran 5.58 in Spokane, Washington (AHRA). Ran speeds of 253.62 at Spokane and a questionable 262.40 at Gary. NOTE: The 262 predated Joe Amato's 262.39 Gainesville run by two years, so it is not listed as John's official speed for 1982. | Abbott was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals on August 15. He qualified for the eight-car field, but in the first round, of eliminations, his 6.05/231.27 lost to Shirley Muldowney's 5.89/238. The following week (August 22), he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. He made it to the final by running 5.75/231.95 over Bill Beitscher and 5.90/243.24 over Frank Bradley's 5.92/249 in the semifinals. This set up a final round race between him and Don Garlits. Garlits was hard to beat at an AHRA race in the early eighties (or any time for that matter!), and he proved why. Garlits' 5.66/251 got the victory over Johnny's 5.91/244.56. Lived in the 5.80s and high 240s in NHRA competition, hitting best numbers of 5.808/248.61 at the Gators. | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. - Joe Moore |
