From the ad copy: "This blue sedan, acclaimed by many as the outstanding car at the National Championship Drags at Oklahoma City, dominated "B" Gas with this 371 ci, 4,150 pound Olds." The new record was 5 mph over the old record. Larry Davis' "Gasser Wars" reports that after he retired the car Adams' Olds engine went on to power K.S. Notes: Arend's cross-species mutant split-window is well-remembered by fans of mid-'60s drag machinery. With a ram-tubed 426 Dodge hemi feeding power to a quickchange rearend though a Torqueflite trans, straight front axle up front and slicks suspended in massively hogged-out rear wheelwells, it was hard to forget. It won Best Engineered Car at the '65 Nationals at Indy, where he set the BM/SP record there at 133.72 mph. |

Notes: The idea of Arend's crossbred '63 split-window Vette probably irks present-day Corvette purists, but so what? His 426 Dodge-powered, ram-tubed, straight tube axle, Torqueflite-equipped, quickchange rearended creation -- hogged-out rear wheelwells and all -- won Best Engineered Car at the '65 Nationals at Indy. He set the BM/SP record there as well -- 133.72 mph. (Posted times from the 5/66 issue of Car Craft magazine.) Also ran 135.13 at Pomona Winters 1966. |

Notes: Lew Arrington was one of the early funny car stars. Lew raced the infamous altered-wheelbase "Brutus" GTO out of the Northern California-based Goodies Speed Shop. A real big block Pontiac powered the modified steel-bodied GTO at first, but the Pontiac could not stand the excessive amounts of nitro. A 398 (0.30-over 392) Chrysler hemi with Pontiac stamped on the valve covers replaced the pure Poncho motor. Components: GMC 6-71 blower, Hilborn injection, Art Carr 3-speed Torqueflite trans, stock '65 GTO frame, straight-tube axle, rear-only drums, "Brutus" also was the first ride that made "Jungle Jim" Liberman famous, along with the "Samson," "Hercules," and "Hairy Canary" funny cars. The GTO ran high- to mid-eight second times. Arrington built a new Firebird in ‘67, while Don Williamson of "Hairy Canary" fame ended up with the much-modified GTO. Future fuel altered driver Don Trillo crashed the GTO bad enough to end its racing career. Times, not necessarily the season best, cited here from feature story in the 11/66 issue of Drag Race. |

Notes: Class A for Modified Sports Production (MSP) was modified sporty-type cars with engines of 292 cid and up. It's very possible this car was classified as an altered. In 1960 Modified Sports Production ran in Middle Eliminator with the roadster, altered coupe/sedan, and supercharged gas coupe/sedan classes. |
