Notes: In the Fall of 1971, photojournalist Jon Asher made initial runs at Orange County International Raceway in an attempt to obtain his NHRA fuel funny car license. At OCIR, he made a couple of half-track shots and a pair of timed runs an 8.71/175.78 and an 8.09/183.29. More runs would need to be made, and plans for attempts in California in early 1972 were tentatively set. The California runs never materialized, and it was decided to make the passes in March at Gainesville Raceway after the completion of the Gatornationals. Jon made three runs at Gainesville, an abbreviated run where Jon's fire boot got caught under the throttle pedal, a good straight as a string pass of 7.47/192.70, and an engine exploding, on fire pass of 8.92/82.94. Fuel funny car drivers Gary Henderson (Super Duster) and Cecil Lankford (Brand-X), along with track manager Terry Earwood signed for Jon's license. Jon also agreed that before he made any runs in competition, he would make some additional passes to get within the NHRA required National Record plus ten percent rule, which required a new licensee to make a full pass within ten percent of the current National Record. Two different articles about Jon's experiences were published in Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, "Update: Driving A Funny Car" March 1972 and "It's On Fire" July 1972. |

Notes: At the 1972 NHRA Gatornationals, Butch qualified at 6.636/209.79 and ran 6.65/215.82 in a first-round win over Tom Hoover. He lost in the second round to eventual runner-up Larry Arnold, 6.67/219 to 6.82/200. During the first weekend in May at New York National, he won a 16-car booked-in show with a best of 6.55/220. Butch qualified #8 at NHRA Columbus (times unavailable) and won a first-round matchup with Ron Potter, 6.84/191 to 7.24. He lost. He beat Don Schumacher in round two, 6.74/203.16 but lost in the semis to Leonard Hughes, 7.38/212 to 10.00-82. Butch won the Mr. Chevrolet event at Capitol Raceway, MD, and he qualified at 6.728/218.44 at Tulsa PRA in August (was that in this car or the Hawaiian?) | Al Bergler's '72 Vega, Logghe Chassis, J&E body, Kirby paint, Keith Black Hemi with a Lenco 2 speed. Butch Maas drove the car that year, winning Mr. Chevrolet at Capitol Raceway. I got the et and speed info from "Ben Brown on Funny Cars" in the August 1972 issue of Car Craft. - Tom Nagy |

Notes: This car was completed on Saturday, November 18, and made one full qualifying pass at the NHRA Supernationals that same day. The resulting 6.70/210.00 run was not good enough to make history's quickest funny car field. Kelly qualified #14 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown). He broke against Billy Meyer in round one. Although initial runs were promising, handling problems, which were eventually traced to the poor aerodynamics of the Vega Panel body, kept this car from ever reaching its potential. Every Vega Panel tried in funny car was evil handling. A lack of downforce caused them to get loose on the top end, and many were lost in crashes. |

Notes: Photo from the 1999 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Did Ron run 315.45 at the 1999 Pomona Finals? We had that speed archived for 1999, but it might have been for Ron's 1997 best. |

Notes: Omer ran at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He was the first alternate but got into the 16-car show when Pat Foster's chutes got tangled on a 6.36 Low ET qualifier and went into the sand traps. He made the best of the opportunity. In round one, Omer left on and beat Gordie Bonin in the Pacemaker Vega. Both cars ran 7.10. In round two, Omer ran an excellent 6.62 but got nipped by eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.60. But that made Omer the Low ET of all the losing cars in round two. In the semis, Billy Meyer was late getting to the lanes to face Don Prudhomme, so Lions management reinstated Omer to face the Snake. Prudhomme got the win with a close 6.67 to 6.74 decision. |

Notes: Phil, while filling in for regular driver Tom Prock, was the low qualifier at the 1972 NHRA Summernationals with a 6.508/222.77. He lost to Ron Potter (Golden Nugget Mustang) in the first round, after he lost the coin flip for lane choice and was forced to take the bad lane. Went 6.550/221.13 at Indy 9/72. Suffered complete body destruction after blower explosion on a winning 6.60/187.11 first-round pass at Indy 9/72. Came back and ran 6.88 to qualify #5 at the World Finals, but lost round one to Gordie Bonin. |

Notes: Terry was the third alternate at the Gatornationals at 5.448/276.52. He was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.280/280.66. Terry qualified #15 at Brainerd at 5.312/258.57. He lost to Ron Capps in round one, but it was a great race. Capps put a one tenth of a second holeshot on Terry, but had troubles and barely held him off, 7.42/245 to 7.341/175.05! Terry was a distant DNQ at Indy at 9.212/90.12, and was the third alternate at Maple Grove at 7.542/123.23. That was his final event of the year. Notes: Frank's first event this year was Indy, where he was the seventh alternate at 6.57/227.84. At the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas, Frank ran well. He started that race by qualifying #2 for the West at 6.67 and then ran 7.10/142.63 in round one when Joe Jacono did not show. In round two, Al Bergler broke against him, and Frank claimed a 6.72/207.85 victory. He improved to 6.42/225.56 in the semis to beat Shirl Greer's 6.64. He became the 1973 NHRA World Champion by running a 6.39/224.43 to beat Bobby Rowe's 6.38/228.42 on a holeshot. Frank qualified #7 at the Ontario SUpernationals at 6.441/223.32. He beat Billy Meyer in round one at 6.48/219.51 when Meyer lost fire. In round two, his otherwise excellent 6.37/224.43 lost to Dale Emery's killer 6.28/229.59. Where did Frank run 6.29/228.42?
