Notes: After Shirley destroyed her Buttera built '72 Mustang at Dragway 42 during the second round of eliminations at the IHRA Summernationals (August 11/13), she borrowed Don Schumacher's 1970 Indy winning Buttera built Barracuda. She had the Cuda repainted and lettered and tried unsuccessfully to qualify for the field at Indy (L&M photo from IRP). At the 1972 IHRA Nationals (DIMS October 13/15), she qualified ninth (6.70/207) and lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round. |

Notes: Photo from the 2000 RT 66 Nationals, Joliet, Illinois. | This was the former Rex Nix car. Rex had run out of money this season and sold the car to Frank Oglesby, who asked if I would drive it. We went to Chicago 2000, but things didn't work out great. We didn't have a handle on the clutch tuneup. - Freddie Neely, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com, 11/02/15 (times from Joliet were 11.562 at 67.99. Did Fred run 296.94 mph in this car somewhere? Fred also was a DNQ at the Gators at 7.088/123.79. Was that in this car? |

Notes: This is Don's first Buttera Cuda that made its debut in late 1970 replacing his Ron Scrima built car. This car was originally painted yellow using the same design that was on Don's first Hot Wheels car. Don was low qualifier at the 1970 NHRA Hot Wheels Supernationals with a 7.044/200.00, losing to Richard Tharp in the first round, (Don's Top Fuel car also qualified number 1 with Butch Maas at the wheel). At the 1970 OCIR Manufacturer's Championships Don ran consistent 6 second ETs (6.93/6.91/6.89) and had Top Speed of the meet (217.91 mph) while helping Plymouth win the overall team championship. Don also won the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on 12/12/70, running a track record 6.92 ET at 192.70. This car was painted white with red flames for the start of the 1971 season and ran successfully for almost two years. |

Notes: This is the Snake's Buttera 'Cuda, built in late '72. Ran in black gel coat for a few races, including the Last Drag Race at Lions (where he was runner-up to Tom McEwen) and the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario. Don qualified #4 at the Lions last drag race with a 6.51. He beat Dale Pulde in M/T's broken Grand Am in round one with another 6.51. In round two, Don went 6.66 to beat Dave Condit's 6.73 in the LA Hooker. In round three, Don ran a consistent 6.67 to defeat Omer Carruthers 6.74. The Tentmaker, the Low ET loser of the second round, replaced Billy Meyer, who was late getting to the line. In the final, McEwen's great 6.39 beat Don's 6.97 in another Snake vs. Mongoose showdown. | The car was eventually painted yellow with Carefree Gum as the primary sponsor. He won Funny Car Eliminator at Indy in '73, running a 6.27 best. In '74, he painted it in US Army colors and won Indy again. - TN |

Notes: While still partners and running the "Eastern Raider" Pinto in 1974, Al Hanna and Joe Mundet commissioned Rollie Lindblad to build them a new Mustang II as a replacement for the old car. The new Mustang II made its debut in October at the 1974 NHRA Supernationals/World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway with Al Hanna driving. During late '74 or early '75, there was a split in the partnership when Joe Mundet decided to move to California and Al Hanna went back to Connecticut. Joe kept the new car and hired Dale Pulde as his driver and Al continued to campaign the old Pinto, both cars kept the name "Eastern Raider." So at the beginning of 1975, there were two "Eastern Raiders," the Connecticut based Pinto and the California based Mustang II. Dale Pulde was successful early in '75 with the western "Eastern Raider" Mustang II when he won the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified fourth at 6.39/208.81 and ran ETs of 6.63, 6.46, and 6.71 before beating Don Prudhomme in the final. Dale used a 6.53/196.63 to defeat Don's off pace 7.17/141.28. | Dale finished second in 1975 IHRA points to Raymond Beadle. Not sure which car he ran the most this year. |

Notes: This car was run with two different Vega bodies in 1972, both bodies were painted the same, but had slightly different lettering. The original body was destroyed at Dallas International Motor Speedway during the IHRA Longhorn Nationals (June 2/4). After losing to Ken Safford in the first round, the windshield deformed at speed and hung the throttle open, Paul hit the fuel shut-off which leaned the engine out and popped the blower causing the body to come off and disintegrate. The Tom West photo shows the R&W Vega posed with the "Hannibal Eight" of Professor Fate (Jack Lemon) from the 1965 movie "The Great Race." |

Notes: At the 1972 Lions Grand Premiere (January 15/16) Bobby made it to the final losing a close race to Gene Snow 6.55/226.13 against a winning 6.54/222.77. Bobby was at the wheel of the Hawaiian for only a short time in early 1972. Bobby left to drive for Don Schumacher and was replaced by Leroy Chadderton who was driving the Hawaiian at Bakersfield during the March Meet. |
