Notes: Jerry attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his best of 6.560/229.59 failed to make the field. He also tried to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where a best of 6.621/229.00 also failed to qualify. His next national event attempt was at Englishtown, where a 6.328/233.76 did not make the cut, and his last national event attempt was at Indy, where he ran his best ET of the year, but also did not qualify at 6.201/233.16.

Notes: Caminito was at Maple Grove in May for its Spring Funny Car Nationals. All cars there ran two rounds, with the two lowest ET's meeting in the final. While he failed to reach the final, he did have an interesting run in the first round. His parachute had fallen out, and he still ran 6.36 at 149.50. Jerry went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.371/218.44 best failed to qualify. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a similar 6.317/222.22. Jerry ran his first "five" in attempting to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, his 5.949/247.25 ended up as the first alternate for the show. That was Jerry's last NHRA national event for the year.

Notes: Jerry started his season at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at 7.10/131. Jerry attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he was the first alternate with the best of 6.009/222.22. He failed to qualify at the NHRA US Nationals (fifth alternate at 6.033/242.58) and at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where the best he could get the car to run down the track was 16.46/31.80. He continued to have problems at Englishtown for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships when he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.85 in the first round, when he shut off to 11.21/75.50. Caminito later came back out in a consolation race and ran 6.10/221.13. | Can't remember where he ran the 5.86/250 numbers, specifically, only that it was listed in a "United Drag Racer" paper we picked up from Della Woods' trailer at Martin that year. - Curt Swartz

Notes: Jerry's early NHRA event record: 6.100/236.46 DNQ-3 at Gainesville; 6.004/244.10 Q11 at Columbus, R1 loss to John Force, 5.80/248 to 6.271/233.46; 5.900/241.02 Q14 at Englishtown, R1 loss to Johnny West, 5.82/250 to 5.916/241.54. Jerry qualified #12 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.864/256.04. In the first round, he could not appear, and Scott Kalitta took his place against Mark Oswald. At the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, a 5.915/245.70 qualified #14. Another 5.915 at 235.66 in the first round, lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.80/246. The following week (September 21), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. Caminito qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but in round one, he picked up to a 5.79/238 to beat Doc Halladay. In the semifinals, he lost to Dominic Santucci. On September 28, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.853/248.96 was good for the second alternate. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Listed times from the December 86/Jan 87 Drag Racing List. Notes: Jerry failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. During the week before the NHRA Gatornationals, Caminito was T-boned by Jerry Jefferson at a match race. He arrived at Gainesville with the damaged car, and chassis builder Murf McKinney came to the race to ensure the chassis had no damage. They redid the fiberglass on the right side of the car. They finished it Wednesday at 11:00 pm. Caminito then ran 5.840/250.55 to qualify #14. After all that work, he fouled away a 5.878/191.40 in the first round, against John Force. His next stop was at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza race in April. Jerry didn't reach the final, but he set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.88/241.93. At Maple Grove for its Spring Funny Car Nationals, Caminito failed to make the finals in the 12 car show that was run "Chicago Style." He did run 5.88/234.37 on one pass, but he blew the clutch on his other pass. rnAt the NHRA Grandnatinals, Jerry qualified #13 at 10.85 in a short field. In round one, he lost to Jim Head, 5.90/241 to 6.089/236.40. Jerry was the sixth alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 6.052/239.10. He qualified #15 at Indy at 5.786/246.17 and lost to Johnny West in round one, 5.75/257 to 5.879/249.44. He was the third alternate at the Keystone Nationals at 6.114/233.10 but qualified at Ennis at 5.551/254.38. In round one, he lost to Raymond Beadle, 5.72/255 to 9.86/83. That was Jerry's last NHRA national event of the year. Photo from Indy 1987.

Notes: Caminito's bad luck continued at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.62but in the opening round of eliminations, the car broke a couple of connecting rods, and the car caught fire. Jerry ended up with a badly burnt right hand but was otherwise ok. At Atco, for the IHRA Summernationals, Caminito qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 5.98/241.28. He faced low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round, and gambled on the tree. It came up red, and his 5.86 showed that he had to take the chance as Ed won with a 5.53. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he was on the bump, and this time he lost to John Martin in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 5.89/249.79 qualified #12. Only fourteen cars showed, so some cars took it easy in qualifying as the last car in was at 7.38. Jerry got a break in the first round, when Kenny Bernstein fouled against him, but in round two, he lost to Johnny West driving the "Hawaiian." Back stateside for the NHRA Summernationals, he ran 5.70/252.10 to qualify #15. Jerry was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23, but an off-pace 6.21/206.89 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.66/248 in the opening round. | Best NHRA times are shown. Notes: Caminito made the switch from Dodge bodied cars to Oldsmobile for '89. Jerry qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.56/248.07. He lost to Chuck Etchells in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals in June. A 5.66/252.66 qualified #13, but another 5.66/255.82 in the first round, lost to Tom Hoover's 5.57/251. He then went to Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 2. Jerry qualified for the eight-car show and then beat Art Hendey in the first round. In the semifinals, his 5.75/238.65 advanced when Tom McEwen broke. In the final, he met Doc Halladay. Both cars had problems, but Caminito's tire-smoking 6.56/155.24 won out over Doc's 8.98/95. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.485, but he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. That was his best NHRA national event ET of the year. He qualified for the show at Indy with a 5.529/261.24, his best speed of the year. 1986 McKinney chassis. Photo from Columbus 1989. Did this car run 5.45 in 1989?

Notes: Jerry started the season by qualifying #12 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.47/264.78. He fouled in the first round and lost to Scott Kalitta. At the Arizona Nationals, a 5.55/253.52 qualified #15, and he lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. At Houston for the Supernationals, a 5.453/271.00 qualified in the top half (#8) of the field. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Mark Sievers. Caminito went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He beat Gary Litton in the first round before losing to Frank Kramberger in the semifinals. He got past the first round at an NHRA meet at the Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.47/254.38, and his 5.50/255.75 beat Hoover's late 5.45/262 in the first round. He lost to John Force's 5.55/257 in round two with a sub-par 5.74/248.89. His next stop was at Rockingham in the first week of April for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was only an eight-car field, and he had nothing but problems in qualifying as the best run he could make was 7.89/106.20. That was far off the 5.51 "bump." He took another second-round loss at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He ran 5.403/260.41 to qualify #7 and beat a 5.55/256.48 Kramberger's 5.68/190 in the first round, before a 5.65/254.74 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.28/269.Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals in May and Jerry qualified #10 at 5.66/257.21. He lost to Richard Hartman in the first round. The following week (May 27), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He ran 5.84/245.23 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. But he was upset by Mark Sievers in the first round. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals where his 5.54/258.62 qualified #13. In round one, his 5.75/257.06 fell to Hoover's 5.57/252. Jerry's best times were the 5.403 at Alanta and the 271.00 at Houston. 1986 McKinney chassis. Photo from Columbus 1989.

In the first round his reverser got stuck in reverse after his burnout and he was unable to run his opponent,Jim White. He then went to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran 5.51/269.78 to qualify #11 again. He improved to 5.49/267.93 to upset favored John Force's 5.46/268 in the opening round. But in round two, his 5.59/258.64 fell to Mike Dunn's 5.36/276.

Notes: Jerry left to go to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But his transporter blew a transmission, and he had to wait for someone to come out and install a new one. After heading back out, the new trans also broke, so the truck had to get towed to a shop. Once again, he started on down the road only to have the rear end break. A whole rear end had to be installed. Thinking that that had to be it, he again started driving only to have the pinion support bearing burn out. After repairing that, he finally arrived at Pomona at 3 pm. Wednesday. There he qualified #11 with a 5.40/271.41. A 5.42/274.72 beat Gary Clapshaw's 5.57/248. He lost to John Force's track record 5.18 at 281 in round two with an off pace 6.12/173.04. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he ran 5.53/262.92 to qualify #13 but lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, he made the field with a 5.51/254.30 for the #15 spot. He picked up to a 5.46/244.89 in the first round, that beat Jim Epler. In the second round, he lost to Gordon Mineo. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.46/268.81 qualified #14, but his off pace 6.69/140.38 lost to Jim Epler in the first round. Unfortunately, Jerry's best of 5.58/263.85 failed to qualify (second alternate) at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He did better at Memphis, where a 5.75/243.17 qualified #15 for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Jerry improved to a 5.67/231.18 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.25/273. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals at the end of May. He qualified #8 in the eight-car field with a 6.31/210.37. He lost a close first-round race with low qualifier Del Worsham when his 5.64/267.93 narrowly lost to Del's 5.61/265. Caminito's next appearance was at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.47/269.94. In round on his 5.59/252.03 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.33/255. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.61/263.77. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.66/224 with a 5.64/266.03. In round two, his 5.67/244.23 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.41/274. Jerry ran at the IHRA Empire Nationals on July 5, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.00/250.13. A 6.02/241.41 beat Norm Wilding's 6.29/235 in the first round, while in the semifinals, he had problems and slowed to 9.58/89.10 in a loss to Worsham's 5.76/260. The ninth NHRA race of the season was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Caminito qualified #12 for the show with a 5.52/273.63. He lost in round one, to Mineo. The next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jerry made the show with a 5.68/256.19 (#13), but in the first round, the Cutlass broke, advancing Epler into round two.86 McKinney chassis. Curt Swartz photo from Bristol, TN, 1992.

Notes: Jerry qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.57/269.54. Unfortunately, he broke against Cruz Pedregon in the first round. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.56/262.39 qualified #15. He lost to John Force in the first round. Caminito really picked up at the NHRA Supernationals at Houston. There, he ran 5.35/277.60 to qualify #12. In the first round, a good 5.46/275.22 lost to Chuck Etchells' 5.14/286. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals. Once again, Jerry qualified well, running 5.39/272.31 for the #11 spot in the field. He slowed to a 5.60/258.24 in the first round, which lost to Pedregon's 5.29/280. He did not attend the NHRA Winston Invitational but was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He was on the "bump" with a 5.42/273.72, and he fouled in the first round against low qualifier Etchells. In mid-May, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Jerry qualified #15 with a 5.75/263.60 but again lost in the first round. This time Wyatt Radke's 5.49/268 beat his 5.63/264.93. He was #15 again at the next NHRA event, the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. A 5.37/272.64 got him the spot. In round one, he fell off to a 5.65/196.16 that lost to ETchell's 5.18/281. He lost in the first round at the next NHRA show as well, the Springnationals at National Trail. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.42/273.47 but lost to low qualifier Radke. I'm sure he was getting sick and tired of losing in the first round, but he was running pretty well to qualify at all these races. At the NHRA Western Nationals at the end of June, he ran 5.45/270.75 to qualify #10, but a 5.58/260.11 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.44/256 in the first round. On July 10, Jerry was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for a four-car race. He lost to Whit Bazemore in his first race. In the thin mountain air of Denver, Jerry ran 5.74/247.32 to qualify #13 at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Another 5.74 at 227.50 in the first round, lost to Gordie Bonin's 5.52/265. He failed to qualify for the first time at an NHRA race in '93 at Sonoma for the California Nationals. He was the first alternate with a 5.73/230.41 best. A week later, it happened again; his best of 5.56/257.21 was the first alternate at the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Things had to take a turn, and they did at the next race. A 5.45/248.20 qualified #9 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals, and he finally got past the first round when his 5.41/259.51 beat Kenji Okazaki's 5.59/225. In round two, an even better run of 5.38/273.97 lost to Pedregon's 5.25/284. After that good run, he was hoping for more at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.35/274.55 left him as the first alternate for the show. Qualifying wasn't a problem at the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove since only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Jerry ran a 5.39/269.78 to get the #12 spot in the field. He beat Bazemore in round one, with a 5.42/263.08, but in round two, his 5.54/263.08 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.22/278. At Topeka, his 5.41/268.41 qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. His 5.43/261.78 in the first round lost to low qualifier and eventual winner Etchells' 5.13/290. 1986 McKinney chassis.

Notes: After ending the '93 season with a blower explosion that wrecked his Cutlass body at the NHRA World Finals, Caminito hoped for better luck in '94. The season didn't start so well. Jerry attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.55/254.38 was good for the third alternate. He made the field at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, where his 5.36/272.06 qualified #14. Jerry improved to a 5.343/282.92 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat K.C. Spurlock's 5.30/285. He then went to Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals and failed to qualify. That also happened at the Gatornationals, where his best of 5.61/198.76 was good for the fourth alternate. Things were bad; Jerry was out of money and even had to borrow money for his mortgage. He parked his Funny Car. But he decided to go to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He ran 5.39 on his first qualifying attempt, came back out Saturday, and ran 5.35/274.80 to qualify #13. Unfortunately, on that run, he lost a clutch. He borrowed parts from other racers and pieced the clutch back together for eliminations. Chuck Etchells smoked the tires in the first round, and Jerry's 5.38/258.84 advanced. In round two, he got out on Jim Epler and led almost all the way. He didn't see Epler, so he clicked it off early (5.56/211.16) for fear of losing the clutch again. Jim roared past just before the finish line to win with a 5.49/263. Caminito earned $8,000 for his efforts. But things would get a lot worse. He went to Memphis in May for the Mid-South Nationals. Jerry ran 5.40/279.76 in qualifying, which was good enough for the #13 spot in the field. He came back out for another pass and lost control of the car. He crashed head-on into the guardrail at 275 mph. Caminito was seriously injured. He had a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and a fractured leg. 1986 McKinney chassis.

Notes: Jerry returned to racing at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston for the first time since his bad crash at the '94 Mid-South Nationals. He failed to qualify as his 6.56/146.10 best was the fourth alternate. He picked up by over a second at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 5.45/275.65 was still the second alternate. Atlanta was no different, as he was the first alternate for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.65/251.81. He was also the first alternate at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, but it came at a price. He unloaded and ran 5.84/206.18 but ended up with seven bent connecting rods. He returned and made two more runs, an 11.25 and a 6.40. Caminito was the first alternate at Richmond at the NHRA Virginia Nationals with a 5.57/234.13. Jerry had a tough year in 1995, failing to qualify at all the NHRA events he entered. His best times came at Indy at 5.353 and Gainesville at 275.65. Notes: Times and info from National Dragster, 6/27/75. Capp was at Edmonton, Alberta, on July 30 for the Funny Car Spectacular event. It was a 24 car show that had all cars make two passes. Capp did not have a good outing. In his first race, a 6.92/195 lost to Al Bergler's 6.85/186. In his second race, he lost to Dale Pulde, and in the third, he smoked the tires and lost to Norm Wilcox, who was driving the "Hawaiian."

Ed raced at an eight-car show at Lions on October 4. He lost to Rusty Delling's 7.48/193 in the first round, with a 7.56/187.89. Unfortunately, Rusty couldn't stop his car, and he did some damage when he hit the sand trap, so Ed was reinstated for the semifinals. In the semis, a 7.58/191.08 beat Johnny Wright's 7.82/183. In the final for the money, he met Mike Van Sant. In the dual Corvette final, Van Sant took the win. Long Beach CA 1969 (Drag Stat)

Notes: Rookie season as a fuel car. Les was runner-up to Jim Liberman at Maple Grove in June for the NHRA Division 1 race. He when to Suffolk on July 18 for its twice rained-out NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. In August, he was at Empire Dragway for its Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.60/185.95 beat Roy Harris' 6.78/207 in the "Brutus" Mustang II. In the semifinal, a troubled 7.18/131.19 lost to Dodger Glenn's 6.57/194 in the "Frantic Ford." Les ran 6.32 at New England in September 1976. A 6.18/200.00 shut-off run at New England in October 1976 was the quickest Donovan AA/FC pass in history (even with steel heads). Reportedly never ran faster than 207.85, running quickly but shutting off to save parts. AKA Sundance Kid.
