Notes: Fiberglass Trends body on a 118" Don Hardy chassis, 427 Chevy, 6/71, Enderle injection, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic, '58 Olds rear. A strikingly beautiful car, from the tinwork to the intricate Corky Larson paint. 7.79 Irwindale Mike Hamby drove the car at the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with an 8.25/187.89, but in the first round, his 8.58 lost to Larry Reyes 8.14 in the "flying Hawaiian. Mike had a ringside seat as the Charger got airborne and flew 200 feet before landing upside down. |

Notes: Dick Harrell finally switched to a Hemi in '71. He had stayed true to the Chevy cause in '70, but it was a losing battle. So, his new Vega used a 426 Hemi. He bought all the parts from the "Ramchargers" but continued to build his own engines. Larry Christopherson was tagged to drive the new 120" wheelbase Don Hardy built car. It used a Lenco two-speed and a Dana rear with 5.12 gears. |

Notes: Larry was at Pomona for the NHRA Division Seven opener in May. His 6.78 qualified #5 in the eight-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Pat Foster in the opening round. Unfortunately, the "Arizona Wildcat" didn't even make it to the line as the engine blew on his burnout, and he had to watch as Foster soloed into the semifinal. |

Notes: Gary's first NHRA race of the season was the Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.24/269.78. He beat Gary Cellone in the first round, when both ran 5.43 (Gary at 274.39), but Clapshaw got the win light. In round two, Gary was disqualified for taking too long in staging the car for his race against Cruz Pedregon. He followed the NHRA tour to its next event, the Western Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.64/246.91 was good for first alternate. Gary skipped the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.55/266.58 qualified #14. A first-round 5.52/265.01 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.38/267. A week later (August 8), he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Gary qualified #15 with a 5.37/282.66. He ran another 5.37 at 280.28 to beat Dale Pulde in the first round, before losing to Gordie Bonin in round two. |

Notes: Gary Clapshaw had a good year in '95. He won his first NHRA National event and ran well throughout the year. He started his season at Bakersfield in January for its warm-up race. Gary was the third quickest Funny Car, and he bettered the previous career-best of 5.24 with a great 5.12/255.75. A large part of the credit had to go to his new crew chief, Mike Kloeber. A week later (Feb. 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.24/244.89. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.23/274.97 beat Whit Bazemore's 5.41/258. But in round two, he lost to the eventual winner Cruz Pedregon. He had the only Mustang-bodied car to qualify at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where a 5.24/277.09 got him the #7 spot in the show. Unfortunately, the car's fuel system problems and Gary could not show for his first-round race against Jack Wyatt. Clapshaw would probably rather forget the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. He ended up as the first alternate with a 5.62/251.04 best. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did not run at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational event, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4 with a 5.21/289.85. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.46/228.31 beat Dean Skuza's 5.54/279. A second-round 5.20/269.46 defeated Whit Bazemore's 5.36/272. But in the semifinals, he faced John Force, and he smoked the tires to a 14.27/75.01 loss. Then came the highlight of his season. He went to Memphis early in May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.29/289.38 qualified in the middle of the field (#8). He and Kenji Okazaki had a great race in round one, that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Clapshaw at 278.72), with Gary getting the win light. The run came at a price as he blackened a crankshaft and the crew installed another for round two. There, his 5.53 stopped Jim Blake. He picked up the pace in the semifinal with a 5.31/251.11 to beat Al Hofmann. This put him in the final against Gary Densham. Neither had won an NHRA national event, so it was bound to be a first-time winner. As luck would have it, Clapshaw's 5.33/285.99 gave him the win over Densham's 5.45/276. Best NHRA national event times were 5.07 at Ennis and 295 at the World Finals. |

Notes: Photo from 1995. Gary was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.31/263.85 and in the opening round, he improved to 5.11/292.11 to beat Mark Oswald's 5.28/270. In round two, he fell off to 5.23/245.09, but it was still enough to beat Richard Hartman. He lost a close race to Al Hofmann in the semifinals. Both drivers ran 5.16 (Gary at 289.85). |

Notes: In mid-September, Collins faced Al Graeber's "Tickle Me Pink" Charger at Suffolk for a best of three match. The Maverick won the first two races and the match with times of 7.42/195.22 and 7.34/205.00. They ran a third race, but Collins fouled and shut off giving Al the last race win. He was runner-up at Lions on October 24 for an eight-car show that saw 25 cars attempting to qualify. He qualified and then beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a 7.19/189.47. In the semifinals, he advanced with an out of shape 8.13/153.06 when Dick Bourgeois shut off. In the final, he ran Dave Beebe. Collins tried hard with a 7.26/196.93, but Beebe got the victory with a track record 7.07 at 193. John drove the Maverick at Lions on November 21 for an eight-car show where he qualified #2 with a 7.11. He hurt the motor and was unable to run in eliminations. On December 12 he was at Irwindale's Toys for Tots race where he ran 7.39 to qualify #5. He shut off early in the first round, and lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. |

Notes: John was at OCIR in September for the East vs. West Championships. All sixteen cars were to make three runs. In Collins' first race, his 6.86/190.67 defeated Tripp Shumake in the "Sundance" car. John Dekker smoked the tires against him in his second race, and Collins won easily. A 7.18 in the third race beat Mike Halloran. Only he and Jim Dunn had won all their races, so they ran for the title. I have no times for their race, but Jim got the win as Collins had to settle for the runner-up spot. On October 20, he was at Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his opponent Billy Meyer failed to fire, so John advanced with a 6.56/194. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde's 6.44/201 in the M/T Grand Am. |
