Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. The track was cold and slick. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Jim's 6.42/214 beat Tripp Shumake, who shut down in Joe Pisano's car. He got out of shape in the second round and shut off to a 10-second time to win over Billy McCahill. He went up against Kenny Bernstein, and his 6.32/210.28 finished runner-up to Kenny's 6.21/238. Jim qualified #10 at Pomona with a 6.229/236.22 for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.18/227.27 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/236 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/237.46. His 6.19/241.28 lost to his son Mike's 6.00/240 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. OCIR held its first of two 64 car shows early in April. Of course, Jim was there. In the first round, he had problems and shut down against Bruce Iversen. In the second round, he got out of shape and shut off again against Tripp Shumake, who was blasting to 5.74 in the other lane. A week later (April 9), OCIR held its second 64 car show. Jim ran a lot better this time. His 6.17/240.00 in the opening round beat Billy Meyer's 6.19/222. In the second round, his 6.05/231.36 beat Henry Harrison. This was one of those races where everyone made two runs, and the two Low ET cars would race in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05 was the third-lowest ET, and he didn't advance to the final. | Jim also ran 5.97 Orange County 10/16/83. | By summer '83, this car was red and ran a 5.90 single at the summer OCIR race that put him out for the night. - Joe Moore

Notes: Jim qualified on the "bump" with a 6.086/250.97 at Pomona for the Winternationals. in the first round, an off pace 6.189/226.47 lost to Rick Johnson's 5.66/259. On April 6, he was at Firebird Raceway for the Coors Funny Car Championships. His 6.08/245.23 in the opening round beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen. In his second race, he ran another 6.08 at 243.90, but he lost to John Force's blower popping 5.82/247. He was at Bakersfield in May for the "March Meet." Jim's 6.10/245.90 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with Rick Johnson, driving the "Hawaiian." Unfortunately, Dunn smoked the tires, and eventual winner Johnson advanced with a 5.76/252. Had tragic wreck at Nitefire Nationals in Boise, ID in '85 where a spectator was killed after the car went through the wire fence and throttle got hung up. We formerly listed 6.05 for Jim this year. Removing that until we get confirmation.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two.

Notes: Mike qualified #5 at Pomona with a 6.15/234.98. and in round one, he beat Gary Burgin's 6.47/229 with a 6.21/236.22. In round two, he was on the receiving end of Raymond Beadle's track record 5.93 in the "Blue Max." Mike lost with a 6.38/231.95. The team did not go to Bakersfield for the March Meet, choosing to run at Sacramento instead. Mike really opened some eyes when the car made a tire hazing 5.84 pass. This was the quickest time ever for a flopper, and it backed up the run Mike's dad, Jim, made in January at OCIR when Jim had driven the "Hawaiian" to a 5.85 while covering for his son behind the wheel. Mike's next pass at Sacramento was 6.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.10/231.95. His first-round 6.064/233.76 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/238. The team did not compete at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and all the Funny Car teams boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals that year. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.12/229.00 qualified #4. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.41 that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.31. Mike qualified #6 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.02/243.24. Roy Harris smoked the tires against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.04/241.28. In the second round, both he and Beadle smoked the tires hard, and Mike recovered first to win with a 6.56/231.95. Dunn blazed the tires again in the semifinal and shut off to a 9.48/79 loss against Dale Armstrong's 6.18/231. Shortly after that, he won the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, where his 6.28/227.28 stopped Burgin's 6.36/228 in the final. Yet another win followed at Brainerd Raceway for the fifth NHRA Western Regional. Mike qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/233.76. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.23/234.98 to defeat Glenn Mikres in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, a consistent 6.24/236.84 covered Tom Hoover's 6.75/222. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and Pickett had troubles and shut down while Dunn ran 6.50/234.37 for the victory. Martin, Michigan, held its U.S. 131 Funny Car Championships that had all cars make two runs and the two quickest cars meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" was strong, running 6.12/238.72 (Top Speed) to beat Frank Hawley's 6.13/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the second race, Mike set Low ET with a 6.09/236.22 over Mikres. He ran Hawley again in the final, but the "Hawaiian" broke and slowed to an 11.00 in a runner-up effort to Hawley's 6.15/216. Mike won the Golden Gate Nationals. His best NHRA times were 5.933 at Indy and 243.24 at the Summernationals.

Notes: Powder blue. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982. Mike qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/239.36. In the first round, he and opponent Dale Pulde smoked the tires with Mike's 7.48/225.56 getting the win light over Dale's 7.66/110. In the second round, he again went up in smoke, and he shut off to an 8.38/115.23 that lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/238 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Dunn qualified #4 with a 6.04/238.99. In the first round, his 6.31/232.55 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.29/237. Mike was at OCIR in April for the Coor's 64-car show. He set Low ET there, with a 5.96, but in the opening round, he got out of shape in his race with Kenny Bernstein and ended up smacking the guardrail. In May, he won the NHRA Division Six race at Baylands. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 6.15/235.60 (Top Speed). in the opening round, he beat Sherm Gunn and a 6.21/230.17 beat Tom McEwen in the semifinal. His final-round opponent was Gary Densham. Mike easily took the victory with a 6.28/234.37 as Densham slowed to 6.61/215. The "Hawaiian" team showed that they were making some serious horsepower at Columbus when Dunn ran 246.93 in qualifying. But the power wasn't hitting the ground, as the ET was only 6.14. That gave him the #15 spot in the field, and he lost to Dale Pulde in round one. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Although Mike only qualified #13, he beat John Lombardo, a tire-smoking Billy Meyer, and Gary Burgin, who broke, to reach the final. There he went up against Don Prudhomme. His final round, 6.15/237.46, finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.00/241. | 6.18 251.18 AHRA US 30 1982

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show that had all eight cars make two runs, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. He and Kenny Bernstein both got out of shape and shut off in their first race, and Mike crossed the stripe first with a 16.11. In the second race, he had to shut down again when the "Hawaiian" went up in smoke. He lost to Trip Shumake's 6.65. Mike attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.493/233.16 (fourth alternate) failed to make the show. After qualifying second, he won the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.08/240.00 behind John Force's 6.03/237. He set Low ET in the first round while beating his dad with a 6.00/240.64 to Jim's 6.19/241. A 6.07/240.4 in the semifinal defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he beat Henry Harrison with a 6.04/238.09. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 5.93/245.90. A 5.879/247.25 beat Billy Meyer in the first round, and he advanced into the semifinals when Force fouled against him in round two. But in his semifinal race, Mike's 6.06/233.76 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/240 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The "Hawaiian" team was at OCIR for its 64 Funny Car race in April. There were 22 FCs, and all made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05/243.24 time in his first race lost to Shumake's 5.93/233 in Joe Pisano's car, and his 6.32/230.76 over Bruce Iverson in his second race was still nowhere near quick enough to qualify for the final. The following weekend(April 9), OCIR did it again; they held another race run in the same format. Dunn still didn't reach the final, but he won both his races. A 6.27/234.37 beat Gary Densham in the first race, and his 6.24233.76 beat Mert Littlefield in the second one. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.05/243.90 best was the second alternate. Early in May, the team made a stop at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Mike's 6.81 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 6.53/230.17 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.22/236. In mid-June, things went bad at Columbus during the running of the NHRA Springnationals. Mike had the throttle stick wide open during qualifying, and the car's supercharger exploded. The car then went up in flames, and Dunn drove into the "catch net" at around 130mph. The right rear slick had blown out and the body shredded upon impact with the net. Mike was ok, but the car was wrecked. Car owner Roland Leong immediately purchased Steve Chrisman's BB/FC Omni for racing the following week. Mike ran his best NHRA speed while qualifying at the World Finals. Unfortunately, he crashed on the run and could not compete.

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team started their '84 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. The car was using a Ford EXP body after the Charger exploded at the '83 NHRA World Finals. This was the first and only time the "Hawaiian" was Ford bodied. He qualified with a 6.19, but he lost to John Force in the opening round. The car was still wearing the Ford body at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Dunn qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.35. He improved to 6.28/230 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 6.52/214. In the semifinals, he lost to Henry Harrison. By Pomona, car owner Roland Leong had enough time to put a Mopar body back on the car. Dunn qualified #14 for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.989/242.58, but he went out early, losing to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, of eliminations, 5.93/251 to 6.09/239. The car didn't respond too well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mike's 6.183/230.17 best failed to qualify. Things weren't much better at Atlanta, but at least he qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Southern Nationals sixteen-car show with a 6.051/243.24. He lost to Al Segrini in the opening round, 5.90/240 to a 10-second shut-off. The big Bakersfield Meet was held in May, and the "Hawaiian" always made a showing there. Only ten cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying was relativity easy. Mike's 5.93 qualified #4, but in the first round, he hurt some parts while beating Denny Savage. He was unable to return for the semifinals. Getting past that first-round was becoming quite the chore, and it continued at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. The team qualified #5 at 5.954/249.30, but Dunn's 6.08/249 in the first round, lost to Tim Grose's 6.00/239. That was still better than their performance at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a stuck throttle sent the car off the end of the track on a 6.102/236.84 qualifying attempt. The Daytona body was destroyed. By July 1, a new body was on, and the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mike ran a great 5.859/250.00 to qualify #4. He also got to go a few rounds, running 5.90s at 240 plus, finally losing to the eventual winner Billy Meyer, in the semifinal when they broke. The following week(July 8) saw them go one round farther at the AHRA Grand American race at Gary, Indiana's US 30. A final round 5.94/252 gave Dunn the runner-up spot to Frank Hawley's 5.85/250 in the "Chi-Town Hustler."At the NHRA Summernationals, Mike qualified #8 with a 5.833/252.10. He beat Segrini in the opening round (5.884/250.69 to 5.99/246), but his off-pace 6.15/218 in round two lost to Meyer's 5.88. A 6.05/241 qualified #11 at Denver, but Mike lost round one to Don Prudhomme, 5.99/234 to 6.07/243. That was Mike Dunn's last NHRA national event for 1984. By Brainerd, Mike had been injured and couldn't drive. Rick Johnson took over driving the Hawaiian.

Notes: Mike started the year by running 5.89/245.90 to qualify #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Billy Meyer's 5.85/242 in the first round, with a 5.91/241.28 before losing to John Force's 5.75/252 in round two with a 5.90/250.00. In May, he was at Bakersfield, where his 5.82/257.87 (Top Speed and new track record) qualified #2 behind Force's 5.76/243. Dale Pulde broke a transmission against him in the first round, and Mike advanced with a 5.81. He got out of shape in the semifinal, and his 7.87/117 lost to John Martin's tire-smoking 6.78/199. Dunn ran NHRA Bandimere CO 7/86. Best 1986 NHRA national event times of 5.656/265.72 at the World Finals. Ran in the first nitro match race at Ennis (against Billy Meyer himself). Both cars ran 262 to show the track's potential. Also ran 257.28 at Indy 1986. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Mike qualified #4 at Pomona with a 5.39/266.82. In the opening round, his 5.44/251.53 beat Tom Hoover's 5.51/269. He then beat Al Hofmann in round two with a 5.46/263.92. Low qualifier Glenn Mikres stopped him in the semi-final with a 5.28/284 to his 5.39/266.98. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.38/266.50. He beat Jerry Caminito in round one and got some "revenge" on Mikres in round two, where his 5.36/274 defeated Glenn's 5.35/280. But he lost in the semi-final, where another 5.36 at 263 fell to John Force's 5.30/270. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Mike's 5.33/270.51 qualified #6. He beat Hofmann in round one, and a 5.46/251.39 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.30/278. Shortly after that, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.31/271.98 qualified #4. Gary Densham lost to his 5.36/261.62 in round one. In the second round, Dunn's 5.34/264.93 dropped Mikres' 5.49/266. He had a close race against Mark Oswald in the semi-final that saw both drivers run 5.38 (Dunn at 269.62), but eventual winner Oswald got the "win" light. The team then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was just an eight-car field, and Mike qualified #3 with a 5.37/271.00. Oswald stopped him again, this time in round one, where Mike's 5.52/264.23 lost to Mark's 5.38/249. He was a little "off pace" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He "only" qualified #9 at 5.36/271.49. He beat Hofmann in round one before losing to Force in round two. He made up for it by winning the NHRA Mid-South Nationals held at Memphis in the first week of May. He had qualified #3 with a 5.31/273.97. A 5.35/269.86 beat Freddie Neely, followed by a 5.36/276.07 over Caminito's 5.59/258. In the semi-final, he defeated Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" with a 5.33. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Hoover had been running 5.4s. Mike picked up to a 5.30/275.31 in the final to claim the victory over Tom's 5.71/215. He then doubled it up by winning the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 5.28/273.39 qualified second to White's 5.25/278. These two would work their way into the final together. Mike also won the Mile High Nationals this year. His best times were 5.225 at Maple Grove and 279.50 at Sonoma. Photo from the 1991 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: Injected here but added a supercharger and went as quick and fast as 7.98/178. The Strip Blazer V Corvair was offered for sale by Durham in the 10/27/67 Drag Times, who described it as "one of the world's fastest unblown Chevy-powered machines, with a best of 8.35 at the ('67) Super Stock Nationals." Car was offered completely at the time, sporting Hilborn injection. – RT | On April 16, Durham was at Southeastern International for a best of three match against Phil Bonner's newly lengthened SOHC Mustang. Malcolm didn't do so well as he lost two straight, but the two raced there again on Sunday (April 17), and the tables were turned. Bonner won the first race, but in their second race, Phil was overly confident that he won, and he pulled the 'chute early only to watch the Corvair zoom past for the win. The Mustang blew its transmission and was done for the day, so Durham ran a solo 8.98/166.50 to win the match. On May 28, Durham was at Englishtown for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. Malcolm didn't run too well that day as he lost two straight when the Corvair kept getting out of shape. He made runs of 9.52/157.33 and 9.31/156.79, while Lawton was long gone with runs of 8.62 and 8.81 at 164.

Notes: Durham spent the off-season completing a new Logghe-chassised Camaro that proved to be one of his best rides. He clocked 7.5-second elapsed times regularly in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. - NHRA | Malcolm was at Orlando for the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships on February 18. He qualified for the show but hurt his motor and could not run. On May 5, he was at the Funny Car Invitational at Aquasco, but he fouled against Clare Sanders in the first round. Durham was at Cecil County for the Fuel Showdown on May 18. He was caught napping on the line by Arnie Beswick in the first round, when Malcolm's 8.16/180 lost to Beswick's 8.34/156. He faced off against Beswick in a best two out of three match race at Aquasco on June 16. Malcolm had a bad day losing two straight. In the first race, he lost fire, and Arnie soloed to a win. In the second race, his throttle linkage broke, and he lost to Arnie's off pace 9.74/124. He was at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine All-Star International race in July. In the first round, he ran an 8.43/176 that lost to Frank Federici's "Shark" at 7.95/187. Another match race was run on August 4 at Gary, Indiana. His opponent was Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger this time. Once again, Malcolm had problems and lost two straight. The first race saw Dyer's 7.74/180 just outright beat Durham's 8.35/150. In the second race, he blew a transmission and lost to Gary's 7.71/185. Durham did much better at Connecticut in early September when he faced off against Bill Lawton. Malcolm won the first race when Lawton's Mustang blew an engine. Bill could not run, and Durham soloed for the next race and won the match. The "Strip Blazer" Camaro became stronger and stronger as the season progressed. He won at his home track, Aquasco, for the first time on September 22. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but Clare Sanders arrived late and Tommy Grove had no car, so only six cars ran. An 8.03/175.43 in the first round, beat Mel Perry, while in the semifinal, Durham got the odd-lot single and ran 8.12/178.21. In the final, he faced Bobby Wood, and his 8.20/175.78 got him the victory over Woods' 8.26/174. On September 29, he ran a best of three match race against Larry Reyes in the super tough "Super 'Cuda" at Englishtown. Reyes won the first race with a 7.71/190 when Durham lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.60/117.34. In the second race, the Camaro won with an 8.03, and in the third race, Malcolm wrapped up the match with a 7.94/183.66. Early in October, he beat Shirl Greer two straight at Houston. Every pass he made beat the former track record. He ran 7.69/186 over Shirl's 7.81 in the first race and a 7.63/188 beat a crossed-up Greer in the second race. Malcolm made a solo third pass and set a 7.57 track record at 182.92. This photo was Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto.

Notes: This photo is Malcolm's first flip-top funny car, a '68 Logghe chassis, B&N Fiberglass Camaro, Bergler tin, supercharged Chevy 427, B&M Turbo-Hydramatic 3 speed auto. | Ran 7.50s at 190 plus in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. On February 16, an 8.43 qualified ninth at Miami-Hollywood's Winter Championships. He met number one qualifier Clare Sanders in the first round, and got crossed up and lost to Sanders' 7.84/183. He met Fred Goeske at Suffolk on April 13 for a best of three match race. An 8.20/173.74 won the first race when Goeske's 'Cuda got out of shape. A not so pretty 8.95/170.13 won the second race over Fred's troubled 11.48/110. But a blown head gasket kept him from winning three straight. Another match race was run on April 26 at Capitol where he faced off against Clare Sanders. Sanders beat him two straight with a 7.97/176 best while Durham ran a best of 8.38/176.81. On May 4, he ran at the Aquasco Funny Car Invitational, but a first-round 8.13/180.00 lost to Jim Liberman's 7.84/187. He returned to Aquasco for another eight-car show on May 27. Don Schumacher's 7.84/194 best Durham's 8.18/184.04 in the first round, but Malcolm had some great luck when Schumacher blew his transmission while winning his semifinal race over Ron Rivero. Liberman had beat a fouling Leonard Hughes, so the final should have been Liberman vs Schumacher. With the break rule in effect, Rivero should have filled in, but he too lost a trans. They went back to Low ET loser from the first-round. That was Durham. In the final Durham fouled away a 7.93/185.94 while Jim ran an 8.14/184 for the victory. Lew Arrington faced off against Malcolm at Budds Creek, Maryland, on June 28. Durham won his first race against Arrington, but then broke in the second race and lost. He couldn't fix it for the third race and Lew singled for the match race victory.

Notes: Malcolm was at Southeastern Dragway for its '70 season opener in March. It was a four-car race. Malcolm broke on the line against Shirl Greer in the first race. But he was reinstated for the final against Arnie Beswick when Greer broke on the run. In the final, he tied the track record with a winning 5.97 on the 900-foot track. Shortly after that, he set the Aquasco track record with a 7.27. On April 5, he was at York US 30 for an eight-car show. The race was run with all cars making two passes and the two lowest ET's meeting in the final. In his first race, the Camaro broke. In his second race, Durham really made up for it running 7.60/192.30 (Top Speed) to beat Beswick and gain access to the final. His competition in the final was Bruce Larson, who had run the second-best ET at 7.71. The two Chevy-powered cars had a good final round race that saw Larson set Low ET in winning with a 7.56/189 to beat Malcolm's 7.64/191.89. He was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He scored a big upset in the first round, where his 7.65 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.65. Unfortunately, he lost to Jay Howell in the next round.
