Notes: Jim showed up at Columbus driving this Cutlass rather than the Daytona-bodied car he had been running in the first half of the season. He had many problems, and his 7.84/117.89 best failed to qualify. Epler then went to Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where although he improved to 5.75/263.15, he still failed (third alternate)to qualify. He debuted a new McKinney-built Cutlass at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where his 5.49/241.15 qualified #5. He fell off to 5.68/215.82 in the first round in a loss to Bruce Nilsen's 5.56/257. He did not race at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, but he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.17/287.44. An easy 6.57/134.77 advanced in the first round when Gordon Mineo broke. In the second round, his 5.22/247.11 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.20/287. He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Jim's 5.25/291.54 (Top Speed) qualified #7. He improved to 5.23/263.85 over Paul Smith's 5.32/261 in the first round. Freddie Neely fouled against him in round two, and Jim took it easy at 7.38/117.61. In the semi-final, his 5.22/291.26 lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.19/270. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Epler qualified #6 for the Keystone Nationals with a 5.22/279.06. In round one, his 5.29 fell to Cruz Pedregon's 5.24. First funny car over 300 MPH and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Kan. |

Notes: Jim Epler started the '94 season by qualifying #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.15/296.24. An off-pace 5.61/199.68 lost to Del Worsham's 5.08/291 in the opening round. At Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals, Jim’s 5.13/288.92 qualified #5. But once again, he had first-round difficulties and his 5.61/190.47 lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.22/289. |

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona, where he qualified #11 with a 5.29/282.48. Another 5.29 at 288.27 advanced in round one, when his opponent, Ray Higley, broke. In round two, an off pace of 5.61/225.16 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.38/281. Epler qualified #2 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.19/290.97 behind Hofmann's 5.14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.26/288.73 beat Dean Skuza's 5.38/272. In the second round, Jack Wyatt fouled against him, and Jim's 5.81/180.46 advanced. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinal. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Jim's 5.32/280.51 "only" qualified #11. He had a close race in the opening round that saw his 5.31/289.85 beat Tony Pedregon's 5.32/282, but he lost to the eventual winner Hofmann, in round two. The NHRA Gatornationals was not a memorable outing for Epler. He only qualified #15 with a 5.35/285.26, and he lost to Skuza in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held in mid-April. His 5.31/286.98 qualified #9, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Chuck Etchells. Shortly after that, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There he ran 5.38/287.90 to qualify #11. An easy 6.34/150.40 advanced in round one, when Whit Bazemore got out of shape and shut down, but in round two, his 5.31/288.36 fell to Etchells' 5.20/293. |

Notes: This was definitely, 24-year-old Epperly's best season in fuel FC racing. The rookie was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Craig qualified #11 with a 6.22/233.16. His off-pace 7.20/132.74 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.15/224 in the first round. The team then went to Elroy Airport Drag Strip. This was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was poor. Craig qualified #1 with a 6.99/211.76. He beat Richard Day in the first round with a 7.27/205.46. Rod Hynes got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, so Epperly's 7.65 advanced. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, but Craig smoked the tires and shut off to 9.86 while Jim got the win with a 7.01/216. Craig qualified #4 at Bakersfield at 6.324/231.95 and, in round one, beat Ed Moore with a 6.16/227.84. In round two, he advanced with an off-pace 6.59/202.24 when Gary Ritter had problems, but in the semifinals, something in the driveline broke, and Dale Armstrong got the win. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 6.20/225.56 left him as the third alternate for the show. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.42/215.31 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but a 6.52/221.67 in the first round lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.17/238. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Another Western Regional race was run at OCIR on May 9. Craig qualified #4 with a 6.30/229.79. He made it to the final by beating John Lombardo with a 6.47/220.04 and Tom McEwen with a 6.17/227.27. Unfortunately, crew chief Amos Satterlee dialed in too much power in the final, and Epperly smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.01/167.91 that lost to final-round opponent Prudhomme's 6.56/227. His next race was on May 30 at Bandimere Speedway for another NHRA Western Regional event. In the opening round, his 6.64/151.51 beat Dan Lexa, but in the semifinal, his 6.62/220.58 fell to Gary Densham's 6.60/207. Then came his big win at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He had never even run there before. A 6.22/231.36 qualified #8, and he beat Tripp Shumake's 6.36/222 in the first round with a 6.27/224. He caught a good light in round two, and his 6.35/227 held on to win over Tom Anderson's better 6.32/228. In the semifinals, John Collins' 6.34/232 fell to 6.29/210. That put him into the final against the defending winner of this race, Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max." Both ran 6.21 in the final (Craig at 231.95), but the win light came on in Epperly's lane. It was an amazing upset. After such a great race, he was surprised himself when he failed to qualify on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. He was the first alternate at 6.61/217.92. The bad luck stayed with him the following week (July 4) when he was the first alternate for the eight-car field at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. His 6.48/215.31 missed the 6.42 "bump." Craig did finish in the NHRA top 10. |

Notes: Craig was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and he had famed engine builder Amos Satterlee turning the wrenches. The team qualified #6 with a 6.049/242.58. Unfortunately, Craig fell off to a 6.303/240.64 in the first round, that lost to Doc Halladay's 6.024/238.72. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified #7 with a 6.092/241.28. Again, they lost in round one, when a 6.422/227.84 failed to hold back Tim Grose's 6.263/231.95. NHRA held its Division 6 Opener at OCIR on March 28, and Epperly set Low ET at 6.03 before fouling in the final against John Force. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Craig ran 6.093/236.22 to qualify #6 in the eight-car field. After qualifying, the team headed back to California to do repairs. They never made it back to Atlanta for eliminations. Craig began driving for Joe Pisano in May, but returned to the seat of the HB Gold car at the OCIR Manfactuters Meet late in the year (Al Segrini drove for Joe Pisano there). Some details from Joe Moore. Lightweight, direct-drive match racer, former John Force car. | At the last nitro points race at OCIR in March '82, Force won over Epperly in an all-Citation final. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Craig Epperly began driving for Joe Pisano in May. At the second Division 6 race at Baylands, they set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.01/223.88. Craig lost early, falling to Tom McEwen in the first round. Epperly qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.13/229.00. He lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. At the Mile High Nationals, the team qualified #2 with a 6.205/231.36. Epperly defeated Tom McEwen in Round 1, 6.275/230.17 to 6.412/234.37, but fell to a Raymond Beadle holeshot in Round 2, 6.251/226.69 (.548 RT) to 6.192/230.17 (.619 RT) – a mathematical difference of four feet at the stripe! The team then entered a rough patch in NHRA competition with DNQs at Brainerd, Indy, and Fremont (6.126/229.00, 6.130/238.09, and No Time, respectively). Epperly bounced back at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County with a 6.002 at 247.25 (Top Speed). He lost in round one to Don Prudhomme, 6.03/241 to a shut off 11.19/66. Epperly drove the HB Gold car one last time at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, and Al Segrini drove for Joe there. Gorgeous candy apple red, black car. Details from Joe Moore. Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | At Firebird's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Epperly's best of 6.03/241.93 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Craig ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.80 at 240.19 to qualify #8 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. In the first round, he faced Ed McCulloch and both smoked the tires badly with the "Ace" recovering first to win with a 6.41/243 over Epperly's quicker 6.34/220.91. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Chuck qualified #6 for the show and in the first round, beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.65/266.11. He picked up to a 5.55/260.34 in round two, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.41/253. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #13 and lost in the first round. Things didn't look much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where his 5.55 qualified on the "bump" spot. But he got around low qualified Jim White and in round two his 10.66/71.63 advanced when Richard Hartman broke. In the semifinals, he ran 5.40/267.61, but lost to eventual winner Force's 5.32/270. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals where Chuck qualified #9. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. |

Notes: Etchells will always be remembered as the first to run a four-second time in an FC. His '96 season was good, as he was always competitive. Chuck qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.46/287.63. He improved to 5.33/252.17 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to John Force's 5.12/296. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.05/299.60 qualified second to Force's 5.04/301. A 5.12/295.27 in the first round beat Jim Epler, while he got to run a 5.36/290.69 solo in round two when Chuck Beal failed to show. An off-pace 5.41/289.85 still beat Whit Bazemore in the semi-finals, but fellow finalist force ran 5.14 in his semi-final win. The final saw Chuck slow to a 5.75/186.48 in a runner-up finish to John's 5.19/295. He always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '96 was no different. A 5.08/306.22 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and he was able to work his way into the final for the second straight race. He started by running a 5.18/294.50 over Gary Densham's 5.21/290. In round two, his 5.15/295.46 stopped Paul Smith's 5.17/285, and in the semi-final, he took out Del Worsham's 5.32/229 with a 5.07/305.18. Once again, the final would come down to Force vs. Etchells, and the results were the same as Force blasted out a track record 4.9301 for the win over Etchells' 5.23/302.01. NHRA's next race was the Supernationals held at Houston at the end of March. Chuck qualified #6 at 5.14/299.70. But he didn't hang around long in eliminations as Mark Oswald's 5.13/287 in round one beat his 5.20/244.96. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field. It's good that no points were awarded at this race as Etchells failed to qualify. He came off the truck and ran 5.37, but it all went downhill as tire shake did him in. His next three passes were 5.62, 9.13, and 7.68. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 9th at 5.10/303.23. He defeated Paul Smith in round one with an improved 304.25 before falling to John Force in the quarterfinals.
