Notes: Undefeated at SIR until McCulloch beat them on 8/05/72. Despite the loss, set 6.49/224 track records at SIR Seafair Funny Car Nats (14,000 fans watched.) Won the 1972 OCIR PDA Championships, beating Gary Burgin in the final. Also #1 qualifier, Low ET and Top Speed (6.551/223.32) at Tulsa PRA race. Ran 6.49 at Seattle on August 15/1972. Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | Art Whipple teamed up with Ed Wills for the '72 season. Wills was still the owner of the car, but Art came on board with his mechanical skills. The 118" Don Long car cost Ed $25,000 to build. It used a 1,700 hp Keith Black Hemi. The crank rods, and pistons all came from KB's shop. Engle supplied the cam. The blower was the work of Marc Danekas and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed with a Crowerglide flywheel and clutch was used. Wills built the Satellite body and Kenny Youngblood painted the realistic-looking grill. The lettering was done by Neil Aveill while the candy red and gold paint was sprayed on by Ron Schramek. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. and according to the January '73 Drag Racing USA issue, it had run a best of 6.40/225 up until that time (the magazine had three month lead time). Confirmed 6.48 at Lions. ET from (Drag Racing USA 1/73)

Notes: Beebe was driving the "Mr. Ed" car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 7.63/199.55 qualified #13 on the hard to get a grip Pomona track surface. An opening round 7.47 beat Leroy Goldstein's 7.69 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In the second round, he blew the clutch, and his slowing 12.69 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 7.50 in Ray Alley's Charger. He was still behind the wheel of this car on March 18, when he ran it at Fresno Dragway for the Winter Race of Champions event. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.47. The second qualifier was way back at 6.73! An opening round 6.56/219 beat Sush Matsubara's 6.85/211. Beebe got to solo in the semifinal when Mike Van Sant lost fire in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. Dave advanced with a 7.48/126. He went up against the second qualifier in the final, Jim Murphy. Beebe would not be denied as his 6.82/200.44 easily won over Murphy's 7.11/212. The following week (March 24), he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Dave qualified #6 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. in the opening round, Gervase O'Neil's 7.53/133 lost to Dave's 6.96/206.42. But Beebe had problems in round two with a shut-off 9.86/69.87 that lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.96/213.

Notes: 1750 lbs. Shotgun motor. Crowerglide Direct Drive. | Car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals and ran 7.57/193.12 to qualify fifth. In the first round, Arnie was matched up against Danny Ongais, and the Maverick had problems getting down the track. At the NHRA Winternationals, another 7.57 qualified the car fourth. The car ran 203 at Pomona, but still lost in the first round, to Larry Arnold. The car was totaled soon after. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals on February 15. Behling set Top Speed at 208.32, and in the first round, he got a "bye" run and ran 7.28/205.00. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Dick Bourgeois in Don Cook's Corvette. He set a track speed record of 205 at Orlando on February 22. His ET was a 7.53. Magazines of the day had different times for the car. Super Stock had it running a 7.34 while one magazine claimed 7.11/209. Ran 6.99 at US 30 on May 31/1970, to become the second six second funny car in the sport.

Notes: Drove the former Ongais car after wrecking Maverick. This car came to an end at Lions on June 21. A new engine was being tested and regular driver Danny Ongais had broken three fingers in the Baja 500 race. Behling stepped in to test the car. On the first pass the Mustang ran well, but on the second attempt, the front end came up. Arnie backed out of it and looked like he had it saved. Unfortunately, the car took a sharp turn and crashed hard into the guardrail. It bounced off and continued to roll about 100 feet downtrack before coming to a stop upside down on fire. Arnie was able to walk away from the crash, but the car was history. There were lots of other rumors about the Mustang's demise, but this was reported in a Drag News Magazine from '70. Ironically, this car was credited with a 6.96 way back in September of '69. The day before this crash, on June 20 at New York International, Leroy Goldstein ran the first "accepted" six second times.

Notes: The Logghe Bros built the "Ramchargers" new '72 ride. It used a 114" wheelbase and weighed 1,815 lbs. A Lenco two-speed transferred the 1,800 hp back to the magnesium 4.88 Dana rear end. The Hemi is stroked to 480, and it used Brooks rods, Venolia pistons, and General Kinetics cam. Enderle injection feeds the 98% nitro into the motor. The Demon body was made by J&E and painted by Customs Unlimited. Arnie was the 7th alternate at the NHRA WInternationals (times not reported). He was at Lakeland early in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.79. In the opening round of eliminations, Bobby Woods fouled against him, and Arnie advanced with a 7.08. He got another easy pass in round two when Fritz Callier shut off with a broken oil filter. In the semifinals, he faced eventual winner Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max." Arnie got out of shape, and Tharp ran 6.61 to win. The "Ramchargers" next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Behling would rather forget this race as the Demon broke a rear-end during qualifying, and Arnie hit the ditch at the end of the turnoff road. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By May, Jim Paoli was behind the wheel of this car.

Notes: First dual fuel pump car. Went 23 races without changing it. Dave moved to Washington in September 1980. In April, Benjamin was at Pueblo Motorsports Park for the NHRA Division 5 Opener. Only four cars showed. He beat Dan Lexa in the first round, with a 6.96/205.30 to move into the final against Rob Williams. Unfortunately, he lost a blower and even though Williams broke on the run, Rob coasted across the finish line first.

Notes: Ran revolutionary 3-valve heads. | Dave did not qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals when he hit the wall in qualifying. Benjamin returned to the NHRA tour at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. Only sixteen-cars showed so his 8.59/104.69 held up for the "bump” spot. He lost to Jack Holsey in round one, 5.994/228.54 to 6.595/212.46. Dave had trouble in qualifying at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals, where a best of 8.246/117.80 failed to qualify. At Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, his times improved to 6.146/226.01, but he joined 20 other funny car racers in failing to bump Gary Densham’s 5.851 out of the last spot in the field.

Notes: JP-1 with 3-valve heads. Dave attempted to qualify at the NHRA Northwest Nationals, but his 5.900/246.57 best failed to make the show (4th alternate). Dave was the eighth alternate at the NHRA Finals with an 8.855/105.68. Did Dave run 5.70 somewhere this year?

Notes: Pomona had 58 FC's show up to qualify for the sixteen spots available for the NHRA Winternationals. Al qualified #11 on the slippery track with a 7.60/201.79. To emphasize how horrible track conditions were, Bergler ran 7.73 and 8.00/201.34 to win his first two rounds and reach the semifinals. There his ailing 9.10 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 7.46 in Ray Alley's Charger. The NHRA Gatornationals didn't go so well. Al won the best appearing car, but the Vega burned to the ground against Pat Foster in the Setzer Vega in the semifinals. Al qualified #14 with a 6.599/225.56 and beat Pete Hill's 6.84/187 in round one, with a 6.536/220.04 and Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two with a 6.570/214.79. In the semifinal race, his engine let go, and the car went up in flames. Al was OK, but the same could not be said about the car. Al eventually got it fixed, and he was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division Three race. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He was back at National Trail in June for the NHRA Springnationals but could not qualify once again. (We didn't see Al on the DNQ list. We need to validate). At Milan for the NHRA Division 3 race, he qualified #1. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.76/218 beat Paul Radici's 6.88/211. He made an easy solo in the semifinal when Jackie Price's Vega broke. In the final, his 6.73/220 finished runner-up to Twig Zeigler's 6.51/225. Al was at Englishtown on July 4 for its Funny Car Spectacular event. He got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Don Schumacher. He later came back out for a consolation race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Bergler ran 6.58/218.97 to win their race. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. His off-pace 7.32/77.98 in the opening round lost to Tom Hoover's 6.72/209. He was back at Englishtown later in July for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.601/221.56 qualified #13, and in the opening round, his 6.77/210.77 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.78/207. Unfortunately, his 6.84/184.04 lost to Jim Paoli's 6.55/213 in round two. He next went to Tri-City for the fourth NHRA Division Three race. In round one, he ran an easy 7.02 to beat Jackie Price's 7.20. But in the semifinals, he got out of shape against Paul Radici, and Al's car slid off the track. He went back to Martin, Michigan, in August for the PHR Championships but failed to qualify. Al was one of dozens of DNQs at Indy with a 6.70/218.44 best. Shortly after that (September 8), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division Three final. A 6.62 qualified #2 behind Billy Meyer's 6.54. These two would eventually meet in the final. In round one, Bergler's 6.50/205 beat Stan Bowman's 7.32/187. He then beat Paul Day in the semifinal to set up a date with Meyer in the final. Al smoked the tires hard in their final race while Billy set a great 6.35/209 to win. He qualified for the World Finals at Amarillo and won round one over Ray Motes, 6.86/194.38 to 7.09/210. He broke against Frank Hall in round two. That was Al's last NHRA national event of the year. Al also ran 6.55/215.31 at Maple Grove.

Notes: Bergler's new Corvette debuted at Rockingham on April 30 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an easy sixteen-car field to qualify in, as only 16 cars showed. Bergler was on the "bump." He improved to 6.79/203 in the first round to beat Bob Beaulieu. In the second round, he shut off to a 15.46 loss to Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Al attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but his best of 6.440/217.39 was good for the second alternate. That was his only NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Al won the final NHRA Division One race held in New England in August. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.45 qualified #2 behind Dick Rosberg's 6.23 in the "Fighting Irish" car. These two would work their way into the final. Bergler really picked up in the opening round, where he set Low ET with a 6.22/220.58 to defeat Tim Kushi's 6.73/195. A semifinal 6.30/220.58 beat a troubled Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse." Rosberg's car had broken on its semifinal race, and Bergler ran a solo 17-second run for the victory.

Notes: Al debuted his new Corvette at the NHRA Gatornationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. In April, he was at Maple Grove's Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show and in round one, he ran 6.37/221.13 to beat John Speelman's 6.65/219. A 6.41/219.51 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Roy Harris' Low ET and Top Speed run of 6.12/241. Al was a DNQ at the NHRA Springnationals and the PHR event in Martin in August.
