Notes: Fuel-injected, AWB car. Al Eckstrand normally drove in 1965, but Dallafior also took some turns. These times are with John Dallafior driving. This car also went low 9's at high 140s in 1965, but unclear if Dallafior was onboard for these times. Info per 2/16/66 Drag News Columbus OH 6/65 (10/15/65 National Dragster) - DD |

Notes: This particular car was first built as a 2% relocation for the 1965 Winternationals, where Eckstrand drove it in A/FX class. He also raced it in this form at the 1965 AHRA Winternationals at Beeline Dragway. It was converted to full AWB specs soon after by the factory-employed Golden Commandos team members; it toured sparingly compared to some of the other Chrysler factory-authorized AWB entries. However, on August 7/1965, at York US 30 Dragway, Eckstrand won the legendary Super Stock Nationals 'Unlimited Fuel' class title over Dick Landy's Dodge. The Top Stock Heads-Up crown for the event went to Bobby Harrop's Dodge sometime after 3:00 AM in the morning. Eckstrand retired from driving after this event. The car ran low 9's-high 140s in 1965, uncertain if Eckstrand or Dallafior ran those numbers. Dallafior and the Commandos team drove the car through the end of 1966. It ended up being located by Steve Atwell through a chance acquaintance in the late 1980s, though in dilapidated form. In 2009, collector Mike Guffey completed a restoration begun by the late Dick Towers. That year, race car restorer Erik Lindberg drove the car to several 60-foot launches in Kearney, Nebraska. - GS | Elton 'Al' Eckstrand passed away after a short illness in 2008. A was at Cecil on July 31 for a best-of-five match against Phil Bonner and his Falcon. Eckstrand got to go home early as he only had to make three runs as he beat Bonner three straight. His first two passes were 9.93/138 and 9.91/138.46. Bonner fouled against him in the third race, and Al made an easy pass to win the match. |
