Notes: This clapped-out, black-primered Bug was the only exhibition car actually owned by the developer of the legendary Turbonique Supercharger and (more notably) the Turbonique Drag Axle. The latter was a liquid-fuel rocket motor that drove through the diffential and delivered over 850 tire-smoking horses to the rear wheels. The following year this car took flight and rolled up into a ball. The driver survived. - RT; Photo: Hot Rod (Mar. 2004), p. 60 - MB |

Notes: "The Black Widow was eventually destroyed when, during an exhibition run at Tampa, it went airborne at 183 mph and tumbled through the traps. Most companies today would avoid any association of their products with a violent wreck, but not Turbonique. Its 1968 advertising prominently featured the crumpled remains of the Black Widow with (driver) Drew standing alongside, flashing a 100 watt smile." - from blogger Iowahawk's "The Real Acme: The Glorious Insanity of Turbonique" |
