Notes: Raced by Petty to "keep his hand in" during Chrysler Corp's 1965 boycott of circle track racing. Like many matchracers in 1965, a lack of formal NHRA classification often left them running as oddballs in the altered or gasser classes. Notes: Factory authorized and financed; the Dart wagon received a mid-mounted 426 Hemi engine using the same Hilborn outfit developed on the Little Red Wagon, with Torqueflite and a 17" wheelbase extension. Built by Cotton Owens at his shop in Spartanburg. NASCAR shoe David Pearson took a break from the roundy-round action during a factory NASCAR boycott, raced the car for a couple of months until joining US AC's US-Canadian circuit in July. Bud Faubel was given the car at that time, and he drove it as the 'Cotton Picker' that summer, running nitromethane in it for the first time in a match-race with Dick Belfatti's 'rocket fuel' dragster at York. It joined 'The Honker' team in paint late in the season. Crew chief George Weiler eventually bought it and ran it through at least 1969. The car survived and is owned by a Maryland collector. (We need to confirm: Trans and whether raced or exhibition runs only.) |
