Notes: Dunn was the third alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.79/253.09. At the Bakersfield March Meet (now held in April), Jim qualified #6 in the ear field. In the opening round, his 6.34/171 lost to eventual winner John Martin's 5.74/245. Shortly after that, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals. He qualified #13 with a 5.63/254.52, but he lost in the opening round of eliminations. His best NHRA times were 5.505/267.14 at the World Finals. Photo from Indy 1987. |

Notes: Talk about a bad way to start your new year. John was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. On Friday the 13th, he crashed his Camaro into the guardrail during qualifying. He was OK, but the car was not as he failed to qualify. The damage was not too bad as he had the car running at Firebird Raceway at the end of the month for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He didn't reach the finals there, but he ran well enough to beat the "Hawaiian" with Mike Dunn onboard. He was one of four cars running at Sacramento's East-West meet, where he was declared the winner after beating Gary Densham, who had his reverser explode in the final. At Pomona, his 5.92/249.30 qualified #9. He and Kenny Bernstein had a close first-round race that saw Force's 5.89/247.93 come out on top over Kenny's 5.90/251. He got to solo in round two when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems. John advanced with a 5.92/249.30. In the semi-finals, he lost a tire-smoking dual with Al Segrini. He stopped at Carlsbad and drove the "L.A. Hooker" in an eight-car show but lost to Bryan Ranes in the opening round. The week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. His 6.19/239.36 qualified #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.54 in a loss to Segrini's 5.88. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.89/247.93. Once again, the car went up in smoke, but his 6.55/245.90 still beat Tim Grose, who blew an engine at 6.79/142. In round two, he lost to John Collins. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Qualifying wasn't a problem as only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Force ran 5.95 for the #5 spot in the field. In round one, a 5.96/242.55 beat Jim Head, but a 6.00/241 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.93/241 in round two. Things did not go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Force failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. In the first week of May, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors 32 car show. Denny Savage was supposed to run John in the final but he had hurt his engine and Gary Thompson took his place. It didn't make a difference to Force, who had set Low ET at 5.98 and then ran 6.07 for the victory. He then won the Bakersfield March Meet that was now held in May. He "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.98, but he beat low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round with a 5.95/245. He smoked the tires in the final, but his 6.49/239 held up to win over a crossed-up Tom McEwen. John also ran 5.80 at ADRA Eunice LA in 9/84, 5.92/245.90 at Gary US 30, and 5.94/252.80 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. Photo from Indy 1984. | Ran 5.76 over Jim Dunn's 6.02 at a Carlsbad match race in May 1984. Frazier and Force were surprising non-qualifiers at Indy, running 5.958/249.30 against a 5.939 bump spot. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Warren was at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Day race. He failed to qualify but got into the show when Fred Goeske's Road Runner broke. Unfortunately, the car developed problems in the first round, and opponent Gordon Mineo soloed into the second round. On March 28, Warren was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.01/177.86 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.74/157. Gunter was back at OCIR on May 2 for its Big Four Championships. It was not a good outing. Warren stuffed it into the guardrail just past the finish line during qualifying. He was ok, not so much the car. | Very early picture of the first chassis under the original body. C&O TorqueFlite and Chrysler rear end. It was a real handful and ended up along the fence at OCIR, and new chassis was built. The original car weighed less than 1800 lbs. Even with the new lower and stronger chassis, the car still wanted to make a quick "jog" at about half-track. Every run was a surprise. I spent two years on tour back east and will never forget the good times. - Warren Gunter |

Notes: Halladay was at St. Paul, Minnesota, for a best-of-three-match race against "Flash Gordon" Mineo. In their first race, his 7.00/189.87 lost to Mineo's 6.93/207. In the second race, Doc was late of the line, and his 6.77/209.79 lost to the Vega's 6.90/211. Things did not go well in the final race either as the Pinto broke a fuel pump, and Mineo made a solo run to win the match. Doc set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.96 at the NHRA Divisional race at Cornhusker Raceway in July. He soloed in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 10.00/124.65 that lost to eventual winner Don Cain's 7.22/210. Also ran 6.87 at NHRA D5 Omaha NE. |

Notes: Tom had a great season in '86. The season started on a bad note when his 5.93/212.26 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82/253.52. A 5.86/247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round, and in round two, a 5.86/249.03 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. He faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65/255 with a 5.677/256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke, and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His best of 6.11/238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot, and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. McEwen qualified second to Mark Oswald, and in the opening round, his 5.78/255.68 advanced over Scott Kalitta, who crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, his 5.77/257.87 lost to Kenny Bernstein's track record 5.58 at 246. He sure ran well at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winner’s circle. It started with a 5.70/257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99/242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78/249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89/239. In the semifinals, a 5.85/236.71 beat Oswald's 5.94/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78/249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77/252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43/143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72/255. The following week (June 22), he was runner-up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85/240.77 and a first-round 5.82/233.28 beat Jim Head, but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79/259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.99/227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.69/254.66. He got payback by beating McCulloch in the first round, but in round two, he had problems and shut off against Oswald. A week later (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He ran well, qualifying #2 for the show, but failed to reach the finals. His best NHRA times were the 5.677 from Gainesville and 257.87 at the Cajuns. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Photo from Milan, Mich., 1986. |
