Notes: Photo from 1982 Milan Dragway. This is the first chassis that I built from scratch. It was first raced in 1975 and was raced for 12 years. It won two UDRA (United Drag Racers Association) National Championships in 1981 and 1982. The biggest race it ever won was in 1976 at the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove, Wisconsin. It also won the Snowbird Nationals at Bradenton, Florida in 1975 and 1977, the Turkey Trots in Orlando, Florida in 1981, and the Citrus Nationals in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1983. Notes: Don qualified #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.64 at 207.85 held for Low ET of the meet. He beat Scott Kalitta's A/FD in the first round, with a 6.71/204.08 and a 6.79/205.47 advanced in round two when Bill Canter broke. In the semifinals, his 6.71/205.47 lost to eventual winner Al DaPozzo's 6.67/203. He was at Beech Bend a week later (June 27) for the NHRA Sportsnationals. A 6.61/207.85 qualified #4. He beat Dan Nimmo in round one, with a 6.87/201.79 and a 6.63/206.89 in round two beat Hal Canode's 6.76/197. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 6.64/207.85 in the semifinals against DaPozzo. Notes: Frank debuted a new car that was 200 lbs lighter than his '80 car at Tucson for the opening event of '81, the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost to Jerry Ruth in the first round. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.94/241.28 but once again lost in the first round. This time, Shirley Muldowney beat him with a 5.92/241 to Frank's 5.94/241. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet and ran a 6.01/223.88 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, the race was rained out and ran the following week. Bradley was unable to stay as he had to go to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.84/245.23 qualified #9. He faced the task of meeting #1 qualifier Jeb Allen who had run an all-time best et of 5.62. Unfazed, Frank went out and ran a 5.79/243 to beat Allen's 5.80/248. It was a good race. In the second round, he slowed to a 6.04/241.93 and lost to Butch Osmon's 5.97/239. Bradley then qualified #7 in the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but due to another rain delay, he could not stay for eliminations, letting alternate Paul Romine into the show. He cracked the tough eight-car show in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.87 earned him the #7 spot in the field. People like Gary Beck, Dick LaHaie, Richard Tharp, Connie Kalitta, Osmon, Mark Oswald, among others, were outside looking in. Unfortunately, Jody Smart beat him in the first round. Frank next went to Rockingham on May 3 for the IHRA Pro-Am. He qualified #6, but the front tires wouldn't stay down in the first round, and he lost to Oswald's 5.82/241. He attempted to qualify for the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, but his best of 5.95 failed to make the show. Frank could not make the field again, this time on May 24, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The trend continued for the following two NHRA events. At the Springnationals on June 21, a 6.03/229.56 failed to get into the show. And on July 4, for the Mile High Nationals, a best of 6.23/227.27 could do no better than the seventh alternate. That all changed by the NHRA Summernationals, where a 5.86/240.64 (#10) got in easily. But a first-round 6.15/222.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 5.86/246. His next stop was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field and made it into the final by beating Don Garlits in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to Muldowney. Frank did not follow the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. At the NHRA US Nationals, a 5.78 got him into the show (#14), but he tossed a blower belt in the first round, and lost to David Pace. He ran even quicker at Fremont on October 4 when his 5.759/237.46 qualified #6 at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. A first-round 5.86/237.46 beat Jim Barnard, but a 5.98/227.27 in the second round was no match for Connie Kalitta's 5.76/240. He ended the season by running a stout 5.77/231.36 to qualify #7 at the NHRA World Finals. He lost a first-round clash against Lucille Lee with her 5.95/240 beating his quicker 5.94/227.54. Notes: Darrell qualified #8 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.77/203.16. A 6.91/203.61 in the first round, beat Dale Hall, but in the second round, he slowed to 7.03/201.34 and lost to Joe Amato's 6.81/201. Shortly after that (June 27), he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Sportsnationals. He set Low ET at 6.56 in qualifying #1 for the field. His speed on the run was 208.81. He must have had his competition worried as all his opponents fouled against him in eliminations. Paul Albers fouled against him in round one, and Darrell advanced with a 6.62/208.33. Gary Southern was the next to turn on the red light in round two, and Gwynn ran 6.60/207.85. A 6.59/208.33 got past Amato's fouling 6.74/195. He faced Al DaPozzo's tough Rodeck-powered car in the final. There was just no stopping Darrell on this day, and his 6.56/208.81 scored the victory over Al's 6.65/204. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was at Indianapolis in July for the NHRA Eastern Regional. It was an eight-car field, and he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.62/206.69. Unfortunately, he was upset in the first round, where his late 6.69/205.01 lost to Jim Jones' 6.72/198. He made up for that by winning the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Darrell's 6.56/209.78 qualified second behind Art Gallart's 6.55/209. Gwynn then ran 6.68/207.37 to defeat Frank Kramberger's 7.18/189, a 6.66/206.42 dropped Mike Kosky's 6.92/181 in round two, and a 6.63/203.16 beat Chet Rickard's 6.77/175 in the semifinal. He faced Amato in the final, and Gwynn got his second career NHRA National event victory with a 6.60/209.30 that stopped Amato's 6.65/206. On July 26, he went to Atlanta for its NHRA Eastern Regional. Darrell set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.67/206.89. He survived a close first-round race against Bill Wiggington that saw both drivers run 6.93 (Gwynn at 187.50), but Darrell crossed the stripe first. In the semifinal, he shut down to a 6.96/160.42 that lost to Bill Mullins' 6.72/200. Considering that Gwynn had one of the strongest, if not the strongest, Alcohol Dragsters of the year, it was surprising that he failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Maple Grove early in August for its Eastern Regional race. The "bump" was only a 7.20. He recovered from that hic-up by qualifying #1 at the NHRA Grandnationals with a 6.60 (Low ET) at 208.81. But he blew an engine on the line in the opening round advancing Gallant. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 6.72/204.08 qualified #1 for the eight-car show, but he had more bad luck in the first round, as his parachute fell out on the line, and his opponent, Al Kenny, got to single into the semifinal.
