Notes: In 1967, Pete got a new car that consisted of a leftover 1966 Comet fiberglass body on a brand-new Logghe chassis. The Gate Job was born. Pete won a few match races with the Gate Job, including the Memorial Day Olympics of Drag Racing at Great Lakes Dragway. In mid-year, Pete received a new 1967 Comet body. It was all red with two white stripes down the top, unlike the blended, saucy paint job of the original Gate Job. For 1968, Gates got a 1968 Cougar with a new Logghe chassis. Pete ran the Gate Job Cougar into 1969, then hung up his driving gloves. (Photo and text provided by Daryl Huffman). | 427 SOHC/Art Carr-prepped C-6 Ford combo. 4-page feature in 5/67 Popular Hot Rodding. | Pete Gates was relatively unknown throughout most of '66. It wasn't until he purchased "Dyno Don" Nicholson's '65 Comet and won the Super Stock Nationals with it that people began to take notice. Gates's new Comet for '67 used a 116" Logghe-built chassis. The engine was an Earl Wade-built 427 SOHC that used M/T rods and 10.5 pistons. Crane supplied the cams. The nitro mix was fed to the engine by Hilborn injectors. It used a three-speed C-6 automatic transmission and weighed 1,940 lbs. The Fiberglass Comet body weighed 200 lbs. and came from Plastigage. The body featured a safety trap door in the roof as a second exit. The car made its first appearance at Phoenix for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran a best of 9.29. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran in the S/XS class. In the first round of class runoffs, he fouled away an 8.76 against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, who won with a 9.00. On April 23, Pete was at Thompson, Ohio, for a best two out of three match race against Al Graeber. Pete won two straight over the Charger. On April 30, he was at Lakeland for the first annual Supercharged Showdown. The Comet was the only unblown car in the nine-car field. In the first round, Pete had transmission trouble and lost with a 9.44/140.40 to Bobby Wood's 9.02/165. Another best-of-three match race was run at Milan on May 7 against Bruce Larson. In the first race, Pete's 8.54/170 beat Bruce's 9.14/154, but Larson came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 8.71/157 over Gates' 8.84/158 and 8.78/158 over a slightly off track 9.30/147.61. Shortly after that, he was at US 30 for a UDRA race. He won the injected fuel Funny Car class with a final round 9.40/163.01 over Dave Pinta's 9.78/152. On June 17, Gates was at York US 30 for an eighteen car show. Unfortunately, his Comet turned into a fireball when his torque converter blew in the first round. He slowed to 9.24/116.12 in a loss to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Pete was OK, but the car was damaged. On August 29, Gates won the UDRA Circuit race at New York National. He ran a best of 8.61/166.66, beating Roger Lindamood in the final.
