Notes: Late hemi, TorqueFlite combo. This car, with an early hemi, was originally built and raced by Brad Anderson of Colorado. A feature on the Dart in the 11/70 issue of Rodder & Super/Stock said Bush sometimes ran fuel so was able to race as a Gasser or fuel funny car. - RT | Yes, this is true. Here's a shot of him racing Kalitta at Sears Point. These stat upgrades are from that race, late in 1969. - DD |

Notes: Plymouth welcomed Leal into its racing team for the '65 season, and he got one of the altered wb cars. He started the season by winning the Ultra Stock class at the AHRA Winter Championships held in Phoenix, Arizona. He had run a best of 10.76 there. As the season progressed, his times dropped into the 9.90s. He then hit the 9.80s and 9.70s on gas. The car was injected; Leal was wary of blowers. The quickest and fastest the car ran on gas was 9.69/144.92 (from Butch's website). Confirmed 9.75 at Lions 11/18/65 Drag News and 142.4 at Fremont 6/12/65 Drag News. - DL | He converted his legal S/S car to injected, AWB match race configuration in mid-season. - RT |

Notes: AKA Trouble Maker Too. - DD | Bitten by the funny car bug, Lunati lengthened the chassis of his home-built A/MSP Devin to fit a '65 Corvair, casting the shell himself in fiberglass. The Devin's injected 377" Chevy was retained; the car was said to weigh 1,700 pounds, very light for the day. The car was said to be capable of high 8's. - RT | Lunati faced Preston Honea at Lakeland in September for a best-of-five match race. Joe won the first race with a 9.81/143.71, while in the second race, Honea won with a 9.85/145. But Joe came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 10.09/142.44 and 9.78/147.38. |

Notes: Chi-town's Bud Roche and Don Mattison of "GuZler" rail fame bought both of the former "Dodge Chargers" factory exhibition cars that had debuted in 1964. They replaced the blown gas-burning 480" wedge, TorqueFlite combo with a fuel-burning 392 Chrysler direct-drive recipe. One car was destroyed at Cordova, IL, late in the '65 season. The second survived a decades-long disappearance and has recently been fastidiously restored. - RT | Bud Roche drove it once at its debut at Cordova, Ill., did a 360 just off the line, and immediately retired. Guest rail shoe Doc Halladay then spun it on the second attempted run. The car initially had a Positraction rear end, which made it uncontrollable. It was replaced with a solid rear, and Caudle took it to this 10.21/150 in October 1965. On the very next run, the car went end over end at least four times, demolishing the car for good. Earlier drivers who attempted to handle the car in 1965 were Ron O'Donnell and John Kranenberg. - DD |

Notes: Photo shows the car with a teardrop hood before he added Hilborn injectors (late in the year). If running fuel, that would've relegated it to match races, but previously this car was a successful NHRA-legal B/FXer. According to Charles Morris' book "Total Performers: Ford Drag Racing In The 1960s," this was the only 1965 Fairlane commissioned by FoMoCo to be built to '64 T-bolt specs. As with the others, work was done by the Dearborn Steel Tubing Company. The 3,800-lb car was initially equipped with a 427 hi-riser and then moved to a Cammer. Notes: Injected, wheelie-prone 2,900-pound AWB 4-speed car. Ran alky or nitro. These times are nitro. The earliest version of this car (as featured in 5/65 SS&DI) used the 409-based 427 cid engine out of his Z-11 '63 Chev. (This was the same engine he had also used in his '64 Chevelle match racer.) Harrell soon switched to the new 427 semi-hemi. ET Ark Valley KS 1965 (10/23/65 Drag News) MPH Union Grove WI 1965 (10/23/65 Drag News) |
