Notes: Tom Sturm crashed his previous Corvair at Lakeland in '66. For '67, he built a new Corvair that used a fiberglass flip-top body from Fiberglass Trends. Sturm used a stock '65 Chevelle frame that he lightened. His words were, "A modified version of a stock frame will work just as well in my book," compared to an aftermarket tube-framed chassis. "I may have lost 50 lbs. on the deal, but I saved more than $1,500, that's for sure. "The engine was a 427 Chevy that put out around 800 hp on 80% nitro. The car's first appearance was at Phoenix for the AHRA Winternationals. The chassis wasn't working well there, but at his next appearance at Lions, the car ran 9.20/159.50 Ran 9.29 at NHRA Pomona Winternationals 2/67. |
