Notes: Del Nero and Patterson spent a few months building this dual-engine dragster, only to race it (as far as research could find) once-at the 2nd annual Smokers, Inc. - Drag Racers, Inc. World Championships at Bakersfield on Sep. 1/2 in A Open Gas. It won the A Gas Dragster class and Top Gas Eliminator. It ran two in-line Merc flathead engines. The front engine displaced 298 c.i., and the back motor was 268 c.i. They returned to their old single-engine set-up with an Olds engine a month later. Research could not find out why the twin-engine dragster had such a short life when it had been so successful at Bakersfield. - MB |

Notes: The team of Sampson, Dillon, and Mudersbach spent three weeks building a completely new dragster after setting a new world record in Sampson's old dragster at Perryville on Apr. 14. Sampson was the driver, Dillon, the engine builder, and Mudersbach built the chassis. They got a brand new '57 Olds engine from Bill Money and spent $1,000 turning it into a racing engine. The new car was ready for its first outing at Perryville on June 2. It set a new A Open Gas national record of 140.61 mph. In its first outing, it broke that record with a run of 141.78 mph. With impressive times, they towed to Long Beach Drag Strip for the Drag News Invitational. They set a new track and world record for unblown dragsters with 10.34 and 141.95 mph. They also copped Top Eliminator at the big event. It seemed that every time they ran, they set new national marks. At Perryville, on July 7, they upped the world record to 145.16 mph. Then, on Aug. 4 at Perryville, they set a new official world record of 147.53 mph. At the 2-day ATAA regional championships at Lions Drag Strip on July 20/21, he set a new national record of 9.935. All this success in the new dragster set them up for even greater success at the NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City in September. They won Top Eliminator at the 1957 NHRA Nationals at Oklahoma City over LeRoy Mackey from Corpus Christi, TX, driving an A/MR. They turned 10.42 at 141.50 mph. In addition to the trophies, they won a '57 f.i. Chevy engine, washing machine, and a $350 cam. Buddy Sampson took the Chevy engine and left the trio to go out on his own. In the months after the Nationals win, Dillon and Mudersbach competed with the dragster in Arizona and California. Notes: His first outing was at Santa Ana on Mar. 20 in his dual flathead-engined, four-wheel drive dragster. The four-wheel drive set-up used Jeep components. His first outing was simply run as a test, but on Apr. 17, after making a run in the 70 mph range, he tried it out for speed and turned 109 mph. Research couldn't find any other results for this early twin-engined dragster. Photo: Drag News, Apr. 1, 1955 - MB |

Notes: In the latter part of 1955, Harold Stephan raced his white '55 Corvette convertible at Lions a few times. In the first half of 1956, his 34-year-old Canadian-born wife took over the driving duties and did very well. She won the C/SP class nine times. In 1957, Harold, who owned a plumbing business, installed a blower in the Vette and raced in A/MSP. Harold passed away in 1960 at age 39. In 1961, Madeleine married Norman Freligh in Santa Cruz. Her drag racing days were brief but noteworthy. When racing at Lions, she looked very sporty in her sunglasses and scarf. Photo: Drag News, April 13, 1956 - MB |

Notes: Harris started driving Art Malone's J-46 engined jet dragster in 1965. He was scheduled to run at Sunshine Drag Strip in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Jan. 21 in a match race against Dan Jones's AA/D. When that got rained out, they rescheduled it to Feb. 2. He then towed to California for a couple of dates at Kingdon Drag Strip. On Feb. 27 he beat Johnny Batto's AA/FD in two straight runs with a track record best of 6.95 at 235.60 mph. On March 20, he was beat by J. D. Zink, driving Romeo Palamides's "Untouchable" jet dragster at Kingdon's third annual Grand Nationals race. His given name was Hubert, but preferred to be called Roger. Although his nickname was Lucky, but his luck ran out on June 3 when he was killed driving the jet dragster. He was making a run on Islip Speedway's 1/8th-mile strip in New York. After crossing the finish line, he released the chute and hit the brakes hard on the short strip. Art Malone had been in Indianapolis when this happened and flew to New York when he was told about the accident. In looking at the scene, Malone assessed what may have happened. "When he hit the brakes it locked up all four wheels. Where he is sitting, up front of the machine, you can't tell you are getting sideways until it is too late. He was probably running about 80 miles an hour when the car went off at a 45 degree angle. There was a grandstand on the side, facing another track. On the back of the grandstand there was a pole, a brace. The nose of the car went under the pole and just slapped his head." He suffered severe fatal head injuries, but the car aluminum body was only slightly damaged. No one else was injured. Photo: Drag News, Feb. 26, 1966 - MB |

Notes: Research hasn't been able to uncover much about this unique gas dragster other than the little bit written about a tune-up run it made at Fremont on Oct. 25. Don Jensen, past president of the Hayward Head Hunters, wrote me: "Palamides bought Jack Friedlands' dragster in the early '60s and did numerous modifications including this two-blower setup on the Chrysler powerplant." The photo caption in Drag News stated that it had turned a best speed of 165.90 mph prior to its tune-up run at Fremont on Oct. 25. The Drag News article didn't mention who did the driving. In 1961, Palamides had several drivers at the wheel of his "California Kid" A/FD the next year, minus the 2 blowers. They included Archie Liederbrand, Bob Smith, and Bob Sbabaro at various times.
