Notes: Given the aerodynamics knowledge of the time as well as how the speeds rocket dragsters attained left little room for driver error and no room for structural failure or mechanical malfunction, relatively slower less expensive rockets might have been the type most suitable for dragstrip operation. Arvil Porter had Paul DeRossett construct just such a car and displayed it in the pits during the 1973 Gatornationals. This was a medium-sized red and gold dragster with an enclosed cockpit and a motor developing only about 1,600 pounds thrust. - Franklin Ratliff - This is one of the cars my father Paul DeRossett built. I remember this all too well because it was a last minute decision to go to the Gatornationals that weekend. Arvil didn't have a trailer to transport the rocket dragster and we had to borrow Zonie Guilbert's trailer. I believe that Mike Tackley's Auto Body in Clearwater up the road from us painted the car. He had also worked with Arvil on the go-kart prior to this. Anyway, the dragster was never run as I remember and was later sold and converted into a regular dragster for someone else. (Dad totally disliked doing this as he looked at his builds as works of art). This was actually the very last dragster he ever built for anyone and he just seemed to drop out of the drag racing scene totally after that. - Tim DeRossett

Notes: ND article indicated that Maas, who had finally recovered from burns sustained driving the Hawaiian funny car, debuted the car with Garlits at the AHRA Grand American event at Orange County in early 1973. He did not qualify but ran 180 mph. Garlits was also there in his more conventional shorty dragster. Don Cook drove the car at IHRA Lakeland, Florida. Garlits said, "Both Maas and Cook said it was doing something funny, so I got in the car myself for a ride." Body by Jocko. Photo from Lakeland 73.
