Notes: Lew got a new car after running the same Firebird in '68, '69, and '70. He also changed engines from the early 392 Hemi to the newer 426 style Hemi. He must have taken a liking to the new Mustang as not only did the sleek body cloak his chassis, but he also went through the added effort of welding up a pair of valve covers to look like he was running a Boss 429 Ford engine. In April, Lew faced Jim Liberman in a best-of-three match race at Connecticut. Liberman won the first race with a 7.19/197 over Lew's 7.32/195.65. In the second race, Liberman went into a wheelstand and shut off, giving "Brutus" the win at 7.17/196.50. Jim could not run in the final race due to a blown transmission, so Arrington soloed for the match race win. He set a 7.02 track record at 203.61 on the final pass. Lew was at the Super Stock Nationals on May 9 at York US 30, but a first-round 7.35/208.33 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.88/199. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet. Also, 6.77 at New England Dragway on October 11, 1971. He crossed the country to race at Fremont in late October 1971 (6.75). Lew's best 1971 times are courtesy of Dennis Doubleday.

Notes: Jake's first time driving for "Jungle Jim" came at Englishtown in March. Liberman was supposed to appear, but he was sick, so Jake filled in. He did really well, running 6.74/219.51 in a first-round win over Arne Swensen in Jake's former ride. An off-pace 7.26/208.81 was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Tom Prock in the semifinals. In the final, he stepped up to 6.59/216.34 to beat Al Segrini's 6.71/218. He was at Englishtown for the Memorial Day Classic. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.63/210.77 beat Joe Jacono's 6.80/199. In the semifinal, his 6.69/200.00 fell to Kosty Ivanof's 6.57/191. Also 6.8/206 first-round win over Paul Smith at IHRA Rockingham Pro-Am Nats 1975.

Notes: 1972 World Champ and briefly had the quickest Funny Car ET of all time as well. Coming off an outstanding season, Fullerton hoped to have even more success in '73. Fullerton qualified #6 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.58/216.86. An opening round 6.58/217.91 beat Jim Nicoll's 6.77/221, but an off-pace 6.96/205.01 lost to Dave Condit's 6.57/216 in the "LA Hooker." Larry had one of 58 cars that attempted to qualify at Pomona for the sixteen-car field at the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best was good for the eighth alternate. On April 29, he was at Atco for its Funny Car Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.66/200.89 lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.50/223. He came back out later for a consolation race against Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max," but the "Trojan Horse" lost fire on the line. At the Warner Robins National Open in May, he and Harry Hudson had a tire-smoking dual in round one, that saw Larry's 7.71 come out on top over Harry's 7.86. But in the semifinals, the "Trojan Horse" broke on the line against eventual winner Tom Crevasse in the "Fireball Vega." New England held its Spring Funny Car Championships early in June. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, Larry's late 6.70 lost to Paul Radici's 6.75. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where a first-round 6.62 beat Paul Smith in the "Sir Wells" Charger. He beat Pat Foster in round two before losing a blower belt in the semifinals against eventual winner Bill Leavitt. From there, he went to New England for its fourth Funny Car Tourney event. He set Low ET with a 6.44, but his parachute fell out on the line in the first round, and he watched as his opponent, Foster, soloed into round two. His next stop was at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. This was another sixteen-car show. Everything went well for the "Trojan Horse" this day, right up until Larry got the "win" light in the final. He started eliminations by running 6.78/170.45 to beat the "Damn Yankee." In round two, he improved to 6.57/216.34 to defeat Dean Lapole's 6.94/204 in the Chevy-powered "King Camaro." His ETs continued to fall in the semifinal, where his 6.54/203.61 advanced when Pete Hill shut down. He faced Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car in the final. Larry got out on Prock, and his 6.51/221.67 held for the win over Prock's track records of 6.45/223. Then things went wrong. The Mustang exploded into a ball of flames just past the finish line. Larry was ok, but the car had seen better days. Fullerton got the car repaired and was at Englishtown on July 4 for its Funny Car Spectacular race. A 6.78/178.57 beat Fred Goeske in round one. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for the All-American race, but an off-pace 7.34/162.16 in the opening round lost to Al Hanna's 6.86/199 in the "Eastern Raider."

Notes: Dodger was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic on May 11. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.16/204.54 beat a tire-smoking Al Bergler. His 6.90 in the semifinal lost to Roy Harris' 6.82. Shortly after, the team was at Lebanon Valley for another eight-car show. Unfortunately, the "Frantic Ford" broke on its first-round race against Al Hanna, but Glenn came back to run a couple of consolation races and lost both. The first to Russell Long and the second to Paul Radici. At yet another eight-car event run in June, the Spring Funny Car Nationals held in New England; Dodger qualified last with a 9.59/142. Don't laugh; neither Kosty Ivanof nor Tommy Grove could better that time on the damp track to qualify. He burned a bunch of pistons in the first round while running Top Speed of the Meet at 213.77. He had beat Pete Hill but could not fix the car in time for the semifinals. He qualified last again on June 16 for the sixteen-car field at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.94 got him the spot. The car broke on the line in the first round against Bob Parmer. On July 25, the "Frantic Ford" was at Maple Grove for its All-American Series race. Unfortunately, his opening round 6.66/195.22 lost to eventual winner Kosty Ivanof's 6.61/165. A couple of days later (July 27), Glenn was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He ran well, beating Joe Jacono in the first round, with a 6.79/208.81 and a 6.99/204.08 advanced in the semifinals when Jimmy King crossed the centerline. He faced Ed McCulloch in the final, and an off-pace 7.53/154.63 finished runner-up to Ed's 6.69/209. Dodger was at Epping, New Hampshire, in September for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car show, and he won his first-round race with a 6.71/180 over Joe Jacono's close 6.74/190. Glenn got crossed up and shut off in the second round, advancing Kosty Ivanof. He returned later to make a run with some new rubber and ran 6.48/209.

Notes: Al was at Miami-Hollywood in February for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He beat Pete Miner in the "Gold Coast" Duster in the first round, with a 7.06/198.72, but he failed to get into the staging lanes on time in the semifinals and was replaced by Al Marshall. He was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 7.05 best failed to qualify for the field. In April, Hanna was at Atco for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 7.55/154.37 beat Tom Hall's motor-blowing car. But he lost to eventual winner Tom Prock in the semifinals when his car lost power and his coasting 14.33/53.53 lost to Prock's also coasting 8.78/150 when something also broke on the "Custom Body" car. Shortly after that, he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. In the opening round, he lost to Harlan Thompson. The "Eastern Raider's" next stop was at Cecil on April 15 for its National Open. It was another eight-car show, and Al's 7.17 qualified on the "bump." He improved to 7.09 in round one, but it wasn't good enough to beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.94. On May 6, the "Eastern Raider" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. Al's off-pace 7.70/192.38 lost to Tom Prock's 6.96/204 in the first round. The following weekend (May 13), he was at National Trail for the second NHRA Division Three race, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. In June, Hanna was at New England Dragway for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, Al's 6.89/207 beat Lew Arrington's 7.03/209 in the "Brutus" Mustang. But a round two 7.26/187 fell to Bobby Rowe's 6.59/205 in one of Don Schumacher's 'Cuda's. Shortly after that, the team was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Hanna survived the first-round easily, and in round two, he beat the "Boston Shaker." He came up against Ron Colson, who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinal and the little Pinto lost oil pressure, and Al had to shut off and watch as Colson soloed into the final. Al's first major funny car crash occurred at Maple Grove. It was for the "All-American Funny Car Championships" on July 25. Al had beaten Larry Fullerton in the first round, with a 6.86/199.55. But the car caught fire and burned pretty bad. The Pinto was a write-off, but Hanna was unhurt.

Notes: After playing around with alcohol for a while, Larson returned to the "wild side" and poured nitro back into the tank. He was at the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown, where he qualified for the eight-car show, but in the first round, both he and Pee Wee Wallace smoked the tires, and Bruce's 7.73/214.79 finished second best to Wallace's 7.30/207. The same thing happened at the next Division 1 race held at Cayuga. Both he and his first-round opponent George Johnson smoked the tires, and once again, Larson finished second. This time his better 7.37/208.33 lost to Johnson's quick-leaving 7.44/208. He did set Top Speed there, though, with his 218.97 from qualifying. Larson was at Maple Grove in June for yet another Division 1 race, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to eventual winner “Jungle Jim" Liberman. At the NHRA Summernationals, he was the second alternate with a 6.75 best. On July 24, he was at York US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. It was a twelve-car show, and in round one, his 6.88/204.08 beat Tommy Grove's 6.90/221. But in the next round, he lost to Tom McEwen. Shortly after that, he was at Lebanon Valley's Summer Funny Car Championships. All eight-cars ran three rounds, and in Bruce's first race, his 7.10/200.89 lost to Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. He beat a crossed-up Pete Hill in his second race with a 6.76/205.01, and he ran his best time (6.73/214.28) in a third-round solo. Later in August, he was at Empire Dragway for the Gold Cup Championships race. An opening round 6.93/203.61 lost to the race's eventual winner Kosty Ivanof's 6.74/191. Bruce was at the final NHRA Division One race held at Atco in September, but a shutoff,10.27 in the first round, lost to Ls Cassidy's 7.37. A week later (Sept 19), he was at Epping, New England, for its Funny Car Nationals. In the first round, his late 6.83/205 lost to George Johnson's 6.96/215.

Notes: The 1972 Challenger was the first Funny Car Roger ran with the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars. The Gold Agency handled bookings. This picture is from 1973, when the flames were added to the hood because of a fire at the NHRA Winternationals. Dennis Ricklefs painted the car in CA. Confirmed 6.73/223.60 at Lebanon Valley Coke race. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.61/225 bests. Lindamood was at Lakeland in September for a Coca-Cola race. He ran as well as 6.87/214 and reached the final. But in the final, he had to shut down as he had lost oil pressure. Roger watched as Charlie Therwhanger soloed for the victory.

Notes: Wayne started the '73 season off right by winning the Spring Drag Race held at Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in February. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.24 advanced when Cliff Brown broke. He then set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.90 that beat Ron Colson's 7.12 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final, he took out "Jungle Jim" Liberman for the money.

Notes: In June, Sam was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" at New England for its Spring Funny Car Championships. In the first round, he bounced it off the guardrail in his race against Pat Foster. Pat was having his own problems. Although he drove the Barry Setzer Vega to the win with a 7.78/135, he had blown the engine and was done for the day. The "break rule" was in effect, and Sam got back into the show for round two. There, his 7.45/145 beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini at 7.57/218. His run ended in the semifinal, where he lost to Bobby Rowe driving one of Don Schumacher's 'Cudas.

Notes: Won Epping Funny Car Nats in late 73 at 6.51/201.79. Also ran 6.44 at NED Epping. Prock qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.599/222.22. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.889/170.77 fell to Leroy Goldstein's 6.58/222 in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. He won over an eight-car field at Atco in April for an NHRA Funny Car Pro circuit race. Times were way off at this race. In round one, his 7.75/202.24 beat a tire-smoking David Ray at 10.40. In the semifinal, he won a coasting contest with Al Hanna when both cars broke. Tom's 8.78/150.50 beat the "Eastern Raider's" 14.33. He faced Roy Harris in the final, and both cars made troubled runs, but Prock got the victory with an 8.43/205.01 over Harris' 12.56/70 in the "Frantic Ford." Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for another eight-car show. He didn't stay long as his 7.08/181.08 in the opening round fell to Al Segrini's 6.68/219. He competed at the Atco Funny Car Factory Showdown race at the end of the month (April 29). His 7.36/154.90 advanced when Richard Tharp had a rear-end break in the "Blue Max" in the first round. But the car lost fire in the semifinal against eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. On May 6, he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. A 6.96/204.42 defeated Hanna's 7.70 in round one, but in the semifinal, Dale Emery's 6.48/222 beat his 6.85/198.67. In June, Prock was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Pete Hill. He then won the third NHRA Division One race held at Maple Grove on June 24. He got a solo in round one, when Lew Arrington broke. Tom advanced with a 6.69/203.16. He got another solo in the semifinal when Arnie Swensen's Mustang broke. This time Prock "cooled it" with a 9.41/83.17. He faced Joe Jacono in the final, and Prock's 6.89/216.86 scored the win over Jacono's 7.05/209 runner-up effort. His next stop was at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he beat the "Shark" with a 6.68/219.51. Tom continued to look strong in round two, where his 6.60/221.67 took out Fred Goeske's ailing Vega. An even better 6.55/221.67 defeated Hill in the semifinal. But in the final, he faced Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse" Mustang. Larry kept strides with him in eliminations and even ran a quicker 6.54 in his semifinal win. The two had a great final round race that saw Fullerton get out on Prock and lead all the way with his 6.51/221 beating Prock's 6.45/223.88. Larry's car exploded into flames just past the finish line to make the race even more exciting. Prock's times were good enough to reset both ends of the track record. On July 4, he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular. He lost to eventual winner Arrington in the opening round. But he returned for a consolation race against Fullerton, which he won with a 6.56/222.22 as Larry shut off early. Not long after (July 15), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A great 6.441/226.13 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.40/230. But he smoked the tires hard in the first round, and his 7.10/207.85 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.57/210. Prock got another win shortly after that at Lebanon Valley's Northeast Funny Car Nationals. His "Custom Body" Dodge was flying there as no one was anywhere close to his times. In round one, his 6.39/225 beat Liberman's 6.65/219. The closest anyone else came to his time in winning the first-round was 6.76! Prock just got quicker in the semifinal, running 6.37/226.40 over Hill's 6.78/204. In the final, Prock ran a track record 6.35 at 227.60 (Top Speed) to beat Tim Kushi's 6.86/209. He then won the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where his final round 6.74/218 beat Arrington's 6.91/210. Earlier, Prock had set Top Speed at 221.13. Things didn't go so well for him at the Atco World Funny Car Championships. He shut down on the line with problems in the opening round. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.812, but he didn't run in eliminations as alternate Stan Bowman took his place in the field. Another win came his way at the NHRA Division One race at Pittsburgh International. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.55/204.08 to beat David Ray in Mike Burkhart's Vega. Earlier in the race, he also ran 215.82 for Top Speed. He also won the New England Grand American Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he ran 6.48/211 in qualifying. Wayne Oxner fell to his 6.62/218 in the opening round, and in round two, Tom ran 6.49/226 to beat Ken Poffenberger. Arrington fried his tires against him in the semifinal, and he advanced with a 6.54/225. But Prock saved his best for the final, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 6.37/226.70 in stopping Liberman's 6.47/220. Prock had problems at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships. The car was acting up, and he was unable to run it in eliminations. After missing the show, he got the car sorted out and made a pass. His 6.63/220.04 was good enough for Low ET and Top Speed honors. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, Prock's 6.452/228.42 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. In their race, Tom ran career-best numbers of 6.301/229.00. Unfortunately, even that wasn't good enough to beat the "Snake's" 6.27/226. At the Amarillo World Finals, Tom qualified #2 for the Eastern Team and #5 overall with a 6.79. He beat Leroy Goldstein in round one, 6.64/218.96 to 6.69/191. In round two, Don Cain got to him with a holeshot, 6.66/207 to Tom's 6.60/221.67. The team did not run at the Ontario Supernationals.

Notes: Paul was driving the "Fireball Vega" in Jan at Miami-Hollywood's Funny Car Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.68/207 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he reset the track record with a 6.65 at 219 to defeat Cliff Brown. He got crossed up in the second round and lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman, but Jim blew his engine, so Smith got back into the show on the "break rule." This time, eventual winner Ron Colson, in the "Chi-Town Hustler," beat his 6.88/214.79 in the semifinal with a 6.67/216. Paul did not drive this car on the NHRA national event trail, but he drove Fred Wells' Charger at several events.

Notes: Arne was at Cecil County for its National Open on April 15. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 7.03. He faced alternate Pete Hill in the first round, and his 8.90-89.91 advanced when Hill lost fire. He also got to solo in the semifinal when Wayne Oxner's Charger broke. This time Swensen ran 11.26/61.98 to advance. And wouldn't you know it? Pee Wee Wallace had a blower belt come off in the final while Arne ran 7.06/200.00 for the victory. On May 6, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. Unfortunately, in the opening round, his 6.91/188.67 fell to Wallace's 6.65/216. He also competed at the Spring FC Championships in New England, where he lost to Jimmy King in the opening round. Swensen then went to Connecticut for its first sixteen car show of the year. He lost to the eventual winner, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, in the second round. There was no shortage of races to attend in '73, and the Swensen and Lani team made its way to Dragway Park at Cayuga, Ontario, for its Canadian All-Pro Championships in June. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 7.17 defeated Roy Harris in the "Frantic Ford." But in the semifinal, Liberman again foiled their plans when his 7.78/204 beat Arne's 7.85/197.36. At the third NHRA Division One race held at Maple Grove, Swensen ran 7.08/204.08 to beat Hill's 7.10/189 in the first round. The car hurt the engine on the pass, and he could not return for his semifinal race against Tom Prock. The team returned to Connecticut for its Summer FC Championships held later in June. Only now Jake Crimmins was driving for the team. In the first round, his 6.74/213.77 stopped Al Segrini's 6.87/210. In round two, he used a 6.77/212.67 to beat Bill Leavitt's 6.78/209. The car broke in the semifinal.
