Notes: Raymond was the first to capitalize on selling merchandise such as T-shirts and halter tops (with free installation). They sold for between $5 and $10 each, and they sold lots (reportedly more than $100,000 of shirts, hats, and halters). The team started the season at Fremont for the sixth annual Nitro Bowl. All cars were to have made three runs, with the winner being based on the number of wins in competition. In Beadle's first race, he smoked the tires to a 10.40/92.30 loss to Bob Pickett's 8.56/148. In the second race, he improved to 6.56 to beat Jim Dunn's 6.66, and his best ET, a 6.48, beat Roger Garten's 6.51 "Warhorse."The team then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premier event. Beadle only qualified #13 with a 6.94/180, but in the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.27 at 216, then beat Bryan Raines. But in round two, the "Blue Max" had problems, and Raymond shut down to 8.35 in a loss to Tom McWen's 6.31/229. Then, it was off to OCIR for the season opener. Beadle lasted until the second round, where he lost a motor and the race to John Collins driving Tom McEwen's second Duster. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.21/200.01 qualified #3, but he lost to Tom Prock's 6.30/221 with a 6.45/215.31 in the first round. At the Gatornationals, Beadle again qualified #3, this time with a 6.34/222.22. Once again, he lost in the first round, when he smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 and lost to Bob Pickett's 6.57/225 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. In March, the team was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Beadle set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.37 at 206.89 over Paul Smith. In the semifinals, his 6.57/220.58 lost to Prock's 6.57/209. Then things clicked for the team: the "Blue Max" went on its longest undefeated streak. It started at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships on April 4, which he won over Russell Long in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Raymond also set Low ET at 6.22. The streak lasted until June 13 at the NHRA Springnationals, where he finally lost when he fouled against McEwen in the semifinals. It should be mentioned that he was at Irwindale on April 17 for the Coca-Cola Championships. While he didn't win, he didn't get beat either. All cars made two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Beadle soloed with a 6.51/188 in the first round, and his 6.45/172 beat McEwen in the second round. His times weren't good enough to reach the final. Between these races, he won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR over Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza with a 6.28/227.27 after earlier qualifying #2 with a 6.25/227. He won the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway. He qualified #1 with a 6.34 (Low ET) at 217.81 and beat Dale Emery in Mike Burkhart's Monza in the final with a 6.70/217.39 to Emery's 6.78/224. (Emery would eventually join the "Blue Max" team in a few years). On May 2, Beadle won the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo. He ran times of 6.55/205.82 and 6.37/219.61 (Top Speed) to get into the final, where he met and beat Long's 6.82/164 with a 6.36 (Low ET) at 216.16. He stopped at Fremont for a ten-car show and set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.14 that beat Dave Uyehara. His 6.26/215 beat Johnston in the second round, and he went up against Don Prudhomme for the title. It was as good as it gets as both ran 6.18 (Beadle at 229.00), but the win went to the "Max." Another IHRA win came on May 23 at Atlanta International for the Dixie Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and Beadle ran 6.41, 6.51, and a semifinal 6.49 that beat Gary Burgin's quicker 6.48. In the final, he ran 6.42 for the victory over Ron O'Donnell's 6.50. Still, another win came on June 5 when he won the NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/220.04 before running 6.40/220 to beat Shirl Greer in the final. Then came the Springnationals, where he fouled out. Raymond's best NHRA times were 6.075/229.00 at Indy. Did he run 235.60 somewhere this year? | Won the 64 FCs in August at Seattle. Beadle ran 6.31 and 6.34 to qualify for the final against Mike Miller (6.41). Last year of the CC Cavalcade. Miller beat the engine-losing Max to the finish line to drunken cheers but swerved outside the boundary line. Raymond also won the Fremont leg of the PDA series over Johnston/Pisano. At both the Fremont PDA and SIR 64, the Max tested a larger, rectangular, polished Crower injector, the same type used by Garlits in '78. "Bad Bob" Williams' sometimes Clarence Bailey-driven '76 Dart used one. - Joe Moore |

Notes: 1750 lbs. Shotgun motor. Crowerglide Direct Drive. | Car debuted at the AHRA Winternationals and ran 7.57/193.12 to qualify fifth. In the first round, Arnie was matched up against Danny Ongais, and the Maverick had problems getting down the track. At the NHRA Winternationals, another 7.57 qualified the car fourth. The car ran 203 at Pomona, but still lost in the first round, to Larry Arnold. The car was totaled soon after. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals on February 15. Behling set Top Speed at 208.32, and in the first round, he got a "bye" run and ran 7.28/205.00. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Dick Bourgeois in Don Cook's Corvette. He set a track speed record of 205 at Orlando on February 22. His ET was a 7.53. Magazines of the day had different times for the car. Super Stock had it running a 7.34 while one magazine claimed 7.11/209. Ran 6.99 at US 30 on May 31/1970, to become the second six second funny car in the sport. |

Notes: Bonin was driving this car at Martin, Michigan, on August 11 for the PHR Championships, where he failed to qualify after all cars ran the first-round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing to the second eight for the race. On September 29, he was Irwindale for its Grand Prix race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.79 qualified #6. Unfortunately, the Charger broke in the first round, allowing his opponent, Frank Rupert, a solo into round two. Gordie qualified the "Hawaiian" on the "bump" at Ontario with a 6.531/219.51. In the opening round, his 6.68/215.82 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.52/226. |

Notes: Late in March, Cain was at Cornhusker Raceway for a best of three match race against Doc Halladay, driving Bill Schifsky's Pinto. In their first race, Don's piston burning 7.93/192 lost to Doc's 7.66/197. Cain had to change pistons before their second race and could not get it done in time, so Halladay made a solo to win the second race and the match. Since the race was scheduled for three runs, the two came back for the final race, which Don won with his 7.80 beating the crossed-up Pinto's 8.32. On April 29, he was at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD, for a best of three against John Dekker. Don won the first two races with times of 7.69 and 7.37 before he lost the final race to a holeshot. His 7.23/188.96 lost to Dekker's 7.26/213. Cain was at Beech Bend on July 4 for its Independence Day Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.95/214.28 beat Preston Davis' 7.22/191. He improved on those times in the semifinal, where he ran 6.85/216.34 to upset Ron Colson's 7.00/200 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He faced Paul Radici in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Paul's 6.86/188 get the victory over Don's hard-charging, 6.88/208.81. Shortly after that, he won the NHRA Division 5 race at Cornhusker. He beat Byron Nelson in the first round, with a 7.26/214.28 and a 7.22/210.28 in the semifinals dropped Doc Halladay's tire-smoking 10.00/124. In the final, his opponent, Jere Wilson, had problems and shut off to 9.15/110 while Cain grabbed the victory with a 7.80/210.28. A couple of weeks later (July 22), he was in Minnesota for the next NHRA Division Five race. Unfortunately, he got crossed-up in the first round, and lost to Dekker. |

Notes: This car was destroyed in a top-end collision with Connie Kalitta's Bounty Hunter at Union Grove, Wis. This was Chadwick's last funny. He quickly transitioned into a Pro Stock Vega. - RT | Ran 6.64 at Dallas. Time had run out for the Chevy-powered Funny Car's by '73. Every once in a while, one might run a 6.7, but while they were doing that there were six Hemi powered cars running 6.40s. Chadwick was loyal to the end of his Funny Car career. This was his last funny car. Like all the others before, it was built by Don Hardy. The car featured a 118" wheelbase The Vega body came from J&E Fiberglass. The "Rat" motor now displaced almost 500 cubes thanks to a Delta Machine Crank and a .062 overbore. Venolia pistons sat on Howards rods and Howards also supplied the cam. A Cragar manifold held a 35% overdriven Larry Bowers blower. A Hilborn injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed transmission fed the power to a Dana rear end. You couldn't help, but root for him as he was almost all alone in a Chrysler dominated class. |

In round two, he beat Tom Hoover and, in the semifinals, a 6.34 beat Kosty Ivanof's out-of-shape 7.21. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Colson got out of shape and crossed the centerline, giving Pulde the victory. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Ron qualified #10. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.36/210.77 when the second qualifier Tripp Shumake had his steering go out. He got out of shape in round two and shut off against Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow. Ron was at the Seattle Opener in April. The race featured an eight-car fuel Funny Car show, and Colson won the event. In the final, he beat Tom McEwen with a 6.15/238.09; his final round numbers were good for Low ET and Top Speed. On April 27, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Ron qualified the "Hawaiian" #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.09/242.58. A 6.13/242 beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting." He was runner-up to Don Prudhomme at the Olympics of Drag Racing race at Union Grove. At the NHRA Springnationals, Colson qualified #1 with a 6.12/239.36 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, Prudhomme had a lousy time in qualifying and only qualified ninth, setting up a first-round meeting between the two. The "Snake" picked up to a 6.08/222 to get the win over the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237.46. A the NHRA Summernationals, Ron qualified with a 6.085. That was his best time until the Indy 6.000 in the new Corvette. Did the team run 6.032 somewhere this year? (It was not run in either the Omni or the Corvette at an NHRA national event). |

Notes: Confirmed 6.90 Portland, Well, this one is sorta rare. Mike is a nice guy, who had a dream. He wanted a funny car - not unlike others' dreams I s'pose. So, he built a BB/FC Vega and ran it for awhile, with Skipper's sponsorship. He suggested better "bang for their bucks" and this is what evolved. The chassis is from the former Pisano, former Green Elephant (Long Vega) rebodied and tinned as this Mustang with some Ford dealership help (they also provided a ramptruck which got a glass-sided body). It ran OK, but bucks-down Mike Cyr overspent the sponsor's $$ and was forced to park it. About that time, Jerry Ruth lost his similar Mach I in a horrific accident, leased this one and plugged Frank Hall in it to complete 1973. The car then sat for awhile before being sold to Gary Rogers who ran it sporadically in 1975. I lost track of the chassis, but the body then went to "Scotty" Knox who had Art Morrison build a suspended econo chassis for it and it received a 351 Cleveland for bracket racing. It evolved all the way back to blown alcohol for the Olympia, Washington racer. I've lost track of the body now because Knox moved on to newer bodies for his entries-Phil Elliot. |
