Notes: This had to be Gary's best season behind the wheel of a flopper. Although it sure didn't start that way. He was at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race, where all the cars made three runs. In his first race, his 6.67/204.08 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.55/207. In his second race, he was to run Roger Garten, but Burgin's car failed to fire. He finally won his third race, where his 6.63 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He ran at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson, where he qualified #3 with a 6.47/205.47. He lasted until the second round when his 7.02 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.99. The following week, he was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #1 with a 6.27/233.76 and an opening-round 6.47/220.04 beat Twig Zeigler. Shirl Greer fouled against him in round two, so Burgin took it easy and advanced with a 7.11/175.43. He set Top Speed at 236.84 in the semifinals while running 6.28 to beat Dale Emery. He faced Prudhomme in the final. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline, and the "Snake" got the win. Burgin qualified #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.29/223.32, but the car went into a wheelstand in his first-round race, and he lost to Tom Prock. At Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals, Gary again made it into the final. He made runs of 6.59 and 6.46 to meet with Prock; this time, he took a little nap, and his 6.43/222.22 finished runner-up to Tom's 6.52/219. He was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did set Top Speed at 228.00. On May 23, he was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Burgin made it into the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 6.49 in the "Blue Max" with a slightly quicker 6.48. Gary lost to Beadle at the NHRA Springnationals, as well. Gary qualified #8 with a 6.53 and a first-round 6.59/214 beat Tom Hoover's 6.60/218. The two met in the second round, and Burgin smoked the tires while Raymond went 6.60/219 for the win. The next week (June 20), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He won the race by beating R.C. Sherman's 6.58/226 in the final with a 6.29/233.32. Earlier in the day, Gary reset the IHRA ET record to 6.14. On July 4, he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. Gary won this one as well, and he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/236.84. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals as well. A 6.22 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. A first-round 6.18 beat Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. In round two, a 6.29 beat Pee Wee Wallace's "Virginian," but in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Opponent McEwen cruised into the final with a 6.62/202. Gary won Englishtown's Funny Car and Halter Top Nationals later in July. He ran a best of 6.52/226 and beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. In August, he won the Race of Champions event at Maple Grove. He set Top Speed and low et at 6.27/228 (track record). In the final, he beat R.C. Sherman. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The front end came up on every one of his qualifying passes, and he had to get out of it. He then competed at the IHRA US Open. He qualified #1 with a 6.38/230.76 but failed to reach the finals. The next win is the one that makes the year. At Indy for the US Nationals, Gary qualified #4 with a 6.127/233.76. A first-round 6.123/221.67 beat John Lombardo, while in round two, a 6.21/238.09 (Top Speed) beat Prock's 6.52. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.21/231.95 when Beadle's car had fuel injector problems and shut off. In the final, he faced Prudhomme's all-conquering Monza. Gary was up to the task, beating the "Snake's" 6.46/226 with a 6.25/237.46. There was no love lost between Prudhomme and Burgin at this time, so the win was especially sweet. Shortly after that, he went to Epping, New Hampshire, for its Funny Car Nationals. Gary looked like he was well on his way to another win as he beat Dale Creasy in the first round, with a 6.49/212. Another 6.49 at 229 (Top Speed) beat Fred Dename in round two, and a third-round (32 car show) 6.40/207 advanced when George Johnson broke. Unfortunately, the win was costly as he blew his engine and was replaced by Al Bergler for the semifinal. On September 26, he made the final at the IHRA All-American Championships at Bristol. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire, and Larry LaDue soloed for the victory. Formerly listed a 6.11 for this year, but we need confirmation on that.
