Notes: Don quit drag racing when he lost his Chrysler factory deal. He sold his Duster to Sox & Martin. Then he had a change of heart and came back as an independent with the hottest combo at the time - a 351 Cleveland-powered Ford Pinto. - Car Craft, July 1973. Ron ran 9.32 at LaPlace, 9.221/149.25 to qualify #10 at NHRA Indianapolis. Don then went two rounds, hitting best times on race day at 9.18/150.74. The 9.18 lost a close one to event runner-up Wayne Gapp's 9.15. We need to confirm the 9.05 at Dallas. |

Notes: Photo from the 1970 Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park by Jim Simmons. Best regular season ET was 10.01. Best validated NHRA speed was 136.98. Where was the 140 run? Humbert was at Dallas in the middle of June for the NHRA Springnationals. It was a 32 car field and after an easy first-round win, he beat Reid Whisnant in round two with a 10.30. But in the third round, he fouled against Wally Booth. On June 28 he was runner-up to Arlen Vanke at the NHRA Division 3 race at Milan. Humbert's transmission broke in the final. He was also runner-up to Vanke at the following Division 3 race held at Indianapolis on July 12. The following week (July 19), Dick was at York for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 in the sixteen-car field with a 10.15/134.93. An opening Round 10.11/136.57 upset Ronnie Sox's 10.29/135. He soloed with a 10.97/122.61 in round two when Dave Strickler broke, but in the semifinals, he was late off the line and his 10.11/136.98 lost to Herb McCandless' 10.14/138. At NHRA's fourth Division 3 race held at Tri-City on August 2, it was Vanke who stopped Humbert again. But not in the final this time, as the two met in the semifinals. There, Arlen's 10.11/134 beat Dick's 10.19/133.73. At the end of the month (August 31), he was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. An opening Round 10.33 advanced and in round two, his 10.42/122.61 beat Bev Chocklett's 10.68/131. He faced "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the semifinals and his 10.26/134.93 lost to "Dyno's" 10.16/137. |
