Notes: Cliff's Mustang used a 120" Romeo Palamides chassis. It used a Halibrand quick-change rear end with 4.52 gears. He switched to a high-gear-only setup from the Lenco 2-speed he had used previously. He still used a Lenco reverser. The body was from Fiberglass Ltd. The Stock Stroke Hemi used MT rods and 5.5:1 pistons. A Howard's cam was also used. Up top, the GMC 6/71 was reworked by Gary Dyer and was overdriven by 33%. Cragar supplied the intake manifold and blower drive. The engine was fed by Enderle injection. Mike Beard served as the crew chief. According to features from various car magazines at the time, Brown was said to have run some 6.8s at 210 with the car. Cliff ran a confirmed 7.22 at Miami.

Notes: Larry qualified #12 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the opening round. In May, he was at Houston for its Spring Funny Car Festival. There were fifteen cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field and Larry qualified #7. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Jerry Jefferson.

Notes: Larry had quite a stockpile of rare SOHC Ford engines. Gould competed at the eighth annual York Funny Car Nationals on April 29. It was a sixteen car show and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.19 lost to Paul Smith's 7.08 in the "Entertainer." He also ran at Union Grove for its three day Drag Racing Olympics held at the end of May. All cars ran with the four lowest ET cars running in the semifinal. He ran there all three days but his ETs were not strong enough for him to advance into the final four. In June at the AHRA Gateway nationals in St. Louis, Larry qualified seventh with a 6.91/211.77, but smoked the tires and lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. He then went 6.85 to qualify fifteenth at the IHRA Springnationals also in June. A first-round 6.73/189.47 wasn't enough to beat Dale Pulde. At the AHRA Ozark Nationals, a shutting off way early 7.02/185.96 qualified him sixth. In round one, the injectors loaded up with fuel and the car caught on fire. | ND: Gould appeared at the '77 and '78 Manufacturer's Meets at OCIR. - Joe Moore

Notes: Billy was at St. Louis in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 at 6.48/220.59. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Graham qualified #3 with a 6.45. A first-round 6.65 beat R.C. Sherman's 6.67, while in round two, his 6.43 beat a tire shaking Bill Leavitt. Billy slowed to 6.89 in the semifinals that lost to Larry Fullerton's 6.61. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.49/217.91 qualified #7 for the eight-car field. He improved to 6.35/222.22 in the opening round to beat Bob Pickett's 6.56/225 in the M/T Olds. But in the semifinals, his 6.55/217.91 lost to Tom Hoover's quick-leaving 6.58/221. A week later, the "Million Dollar Baby" was at Atlanta for the IHRA Nationals. Graham lost to Tripp Shumake in the second round there. Billy was disappointed at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, where his 6.28/220.97 best (fourth alternate) failed to make the show.

Notes: Hoover was still racing his Monza at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9, but his 7.23/202 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Tripp Shumake's 7.08/211. His Corvette debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a best of 6.43/218.97 (first alternate) failed to qualify. He made up for it by winning the Green Valley Raceway Opener. There he had run 6.25/225 to beat Billy Graham's quicker 6.21 in the opening round, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.11/232.77 that defeated Gordon Mineo's 6.45. Graham got back into the show on the "break rule," and Billy was Hoover's final round victim. Tom's 6.15/232.77 beat Graham who's Monza got out of shape. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 6.47/227. But in round one, he shut down with problems to an 11.29 against eventual winner Dale Pulde. The following weekend (March 19), he went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division Four opener. His 6.66/210.28 qualified #3. In the opening round, he beat Randy Lackey with a 6.72/206.42. A good light combined with a 6.80/205.47 beat low qualifier, Shumake's quicker 6.78/224. He then met up with Billy Meyer in the final. Meyer got the win, running 6.71/218 to beat Hoover's 6.81/204.08 runner-up effort. He was back at Green Valley on April 16 for the second NHRA Division Four race. A 6.29/223.32 qualified #3. Chip Woodall fouled against him in round one, and Tom advanced with a 6.40/214.79. But he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.97/91.00 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.26/215. On April 30, Hoover was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.50 and lasted until the semifinals before he smoked the tires and lost to Tom Anderson. He was at Tulsa the following week (May 7) for the AHRA Springnationals, where his 6.90/212.76 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A 6.81/214.28 in round one, beat Lee Beard, but in the semifinals, he and Shumake and a close race with Tripp's 6.71/218 coming out on top over his 6.73/216.34. His next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where a 6.61/219.52 qualified #3. He beat Larry Gould's SOHC-powered Mustang in round one, with a 6.62/220.05 (Top Speed). He and Tom McEwen smoked the tires in the semifinals, with McEwen's 7.16 winning over his 7.25. The NHRA Springnationals did not go well for Hoover. Tom had just made a qualifying pass at 229 mph when his blower backfired. It caused the fuel tank to explode, and the car turned into a fireball as it continued down the track. The fire burned up all the oxygen, and Hoover felt that he would pass out. So at 40 mph, he bailed out the side window of the car. The car must not have been burnt bad as he returned to competition at Alamo Dragway the following week (June 18) for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.41/215 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.48/205 beat Billy Graham. A 6.42 in the semifinals failed to beat McEwen's 6.36. His next stop was at Brainerd early in July for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Don Prudhomme and his 6.52/220.58 lost to the "Snake's" 6.54/227. On Sunday, the eight cars raced for the win. Hoover's 6.41/214.83 defeated Lee Beard in the opening round, and a 6.35/229.00 beat Bob Pickett's 6.65/218 in the semifinal. Once again, he faced Prudhomme, but it was in the final for all the marbles this time. Tom led wire to wire with his 6.27/231.36 getting the victory over Don's 6.30/230 in a close race. At the Byron Funny Car Championships, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" both ran 6.44 (Hoover at 230.17) in the opening round, but Colson got to the stripe first. He was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. And while he didn't win, he did run a best of 6.37 and set Top Speed of the meet at 222.70. Englishtown was the next stop on the calendar for the NHRA Summernationals. Hoover's 6.21/234.98 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he fouled against John Lombardo in the first round. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnational Molson. This was only an eight-car show, and his 6.20/228.42 qualified #3. But once again, he fouled in the opening round. This time he ran 6.41/229.59 while his opponent, Tom McEwen, won with a 6.23/225. The following week (August 12), found the "Showtime" at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars ran the first-round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing into the first-round of competition. Hoover's 6.28 got him the #7 spot for the show. In round one, he improved to 6.25/224.43 to beat Rick Johnson's 6.34/207 in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.10/210 put Hoover's 6.32/190.27 on the trailer. August 20 found Tom at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.37/222.76 qualified #3. An opening round 6.50/226 defeated Jim White's 6.72, and a 6.39/225.00 beat Billy Graham's 6.51/216 in the semifinal. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final. In their race, Tom's 6.36/221.12 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.29/229.
