Notes: Injected fuel. Dan Hicks rectangular tube chassis. Fiberglass Trends body with steel top and quarter panels. Bill started the season with Chevelle, then built this. Crashed at season rollout at Lions and repaired. It then was subsequently destroyed in a June crash at Union Hill. Brought Chevelle back out to complete booked dates. 427 Chevy was stroked to 480 cubes. - DD | Tom Sturm debuted his new Corvair at Lions on April 2. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Tex Darnaby's "Temptation" Hemi-Belvedere. Bill Churchfield was the driver for the Corvair. In their first race, Tex's 10.61/133 beat the Corvair's 10.94/133.92. Bill got badly out of shape in their second race but his 15.64/66.96 still won as Tex had fouled. Darnaby won the match in the third race as his 10.83/133 easily took the win as Bill had gotten out of shape with the Corvair and backed it into the chain-link fence. On April 16, Churchfield was at Dickinson, Texas, for a best of five match against Clester Andrews. The Corvair was handling badly, and Bill lost the first two races and broke an axle after doing some unusual backward wheelstands. The match race victory was given to Andrews. Bill raced Tommy Grove at Biloxi on April 30 for a best three out of five match race. Bill's 10.29/145.34 beat Grove in the first race, but Tom came back to win the next three races and the match when Bill first fouled, then got crossed up, and in the next race, the Corvair failed to fire. On May 7, Bill was at Lakeland for a rematch against Clester Andrews Mustang. In their first race, the Chevy got out first, and it held the lead right to the finish with a 9.71/155.84. In the second race, Clester got out ahead. The race was going well until Bill pulled second gear, and the Corvair started to wander into the Mustang's lane. Andrews moved over as much as he could until the rear tire it the dirt. The car then did a slide in front of Bill's fishtailing Corvair. The two didn't touch. The Mustang came to a stop off the track with front-end damage. Bill came back out later to make one mot=re run and ran 9.66/156.34.
