Notes: By '78, few teams were using Vega bodies in AA/FC racing, and those that were, were more times than not, underfunded teams. This was one Vega that was feared by other teams. Anderson had the only Vega to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.41/221.67 put him in the dreaded #9 spot forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme, in the opening round. The "Snake" won their race with a 6.52/221 over Tom's 6.81/202.70. He made it into the final at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and, in the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him and shut off. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and this time Anderson smoked the tires while Pickett ran 6.61/219 for the victory. He was also runner-up to Mike Miller at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Tom also had the only Vega that made the field for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 6.36/228.45 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. But in the first round, the car got out of shape against John Lombardo, and he shut off to a 7.72/113.06 loss. Anderson got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. A final round 6.25/222.77 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16/237. He was at Edgewater for the next Division 3 race, where he qualified #2 with a 6.43/218.97. A first-round 6.46 beat Murf McKinney's 6.91, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Larry Fullerton. Of course, he had the only Vega in the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but this Vega was laying down some numbers. His 6.17/230.76 qualified #9 and put him up against Prudhomme for the first round again. Prudhomme's 6.13 won their race, but Anderson's 6.25 in losing was nothing to be ashamed of. Tom did not race at any IHRA races until the Northern Nationals at Milan in July. At Milan, his 6.35 qualified #3. An opening round 6.25/227.27 beat Fullerton's 6.69/211, and a strong 6.12/229.59 in the semifinal beat Dave Settles' 6.17/215 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced Denny Savage in the final. Savage had run 6.11 in his semifinal race. But the hoped-for close final never came about as Anderson's wheelie bar broke, causing suspension damage to the Vega and forcing him to shut off. Savage had his own problems, as his on fire 7.28/134 got him the trophy. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. His speed in qualifying was 225.56, but he blew his engine and was replaced by Kenny Bernstein in eliminations. Things didn't go so well back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and all just got one crack at it. Unfortunately, Anderson failed to run quick enough to qualify. He was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 2 race. In the opening round, his 6.40/219.51 defeated Ray Moats' 6.75/215. But he had damaged the engine and couldn't make his semifinal date with eventual winner Billy Meyer. He then went to Baton Rouge for the Division 4 final, where he finally picked up a victory. He was long overdue. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Anderson had the only Vega that qualified for the field. His 6.19/224.59 got him the #13 spot. He ran 6.25/224.43 in the first round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.16/236.

Notes: Kenny Bernstein's car was awarded "best appearing" at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He also showed up with a new crew chief, Leroy Goldstein. Bernstein ran 6.21/231.36 to qualify #13, but he lost to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was the first alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.39 best. But #8 qualifier Tom Anderson blew his engine during qualifying, and Kenny took his spot in the show. In the first round, he had problems against Gary Burgin and shut off to an 8.59 loss. At the NHRA World Finals at Ontario, Bernstein qualified #10 with a 6.19/232.55. In the first round, a tire-smoking shutoff 10.73/71.77 lost to John Collins' 6.13/221.

Notes: Donovan-powered FC's were few and far between by '78. The Cassidy brothers did their best to stay competitive. Cassidy started his season at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #15, and in round one, his 7.33 lost to John Collins' 6.42. He then went to Green Valley Raceway's Funny Car opener. There was an opening-round 6.62 lost to Tom Prock's 6.27. The next stop for him was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and the track wasn't great, so his 7.50/205 held up for the #5 spot in the show. He improved by almost a half-second to a 7.06/184 in the first round, but it wasn't good enough as the eventual winner Dale Pulde, beat him with a 6.49/224. Les took a big win over an eight-car field at Suffolk in April. His final-round opponent, Dodger Glenn, crossed the centerline in the final, giving Les the win. He ran a pro-stock like 9.07 at 91mph to qualify #14 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Larry Fullerton failed to fire for his race against him in the opening round of eliminations, and Cassidy ran a solo 7.24/145 to advance. In round two, he slipped and slid to a 9.32/95 loss to Denny Savage's 6.49/216. On July 2, Les was at Empire Dragway in New York for the NED Gold Cup Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.77/189.48 in the opening round lost to Tom Prock's 6.44/213. A couple of days later (July 5), he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular race. Twelve cars were competing, and all were to run two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, Les's 6.69/173.09 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.17/218. In the second race, he beat Jim Adolph with a 6.63. His ET was not good enough to advance into the final. On July 22, Cassidy went to Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division One race. He didn't stick around long as his crossed-up 7.59/131.19 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.70/208 in the opening round. $600 junk Monza body on venerable S&W chassis. AKA Sundance Kid.

Notes: Monster 5.973/245.23 statement in round one, of the US Nationals over Pat Foster's 6.13. Dominant performance throughout, but Don dropped three tenths in the final, and Tom McEwen earned an emotional victory. Also 241.28 at 78 Summers and 240.64 at Springs. Third qualifier at Winters at 6.177/240.67. Won at Fremont over Ivo on 3/08/78 to repeat their Winters final, 6.15/234.37 to 6.25/230.17. Prudhomme had a new Arrow built for the '78 season. It was built by Pat Foster and Jim Hume of H&H Racecraft. The biggest difference between the Arrow and the '77 car was the new torsion bar front suspension. The old version used a solid front end. Foster stated, "Other than that, the car will just be a little lower and a little slipperier than last year's car." Don started his season on the right track by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He "only" qualified #5 with a 6.83 (traction was bad!). A pick-up of two-tenths in the first round, saw his 6.63/227 beat Bryan Raines' 7.34. His 6.65/228.42 (Top Speed) beat low qualifier Tripp Shumake in the second round. Don's 6.60 in the semifinals sent John Collins home, and a final round 6.61/227.27 beat Gene Snow for the title. As if that wasn't enough of a good way to start the year, he did it again at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 6.17/240.67 (Top Speed) qualified #3. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.30/236.22 beat Ed McCulloch. Snow had problems in the second round against him and the "Snake" advanced with a 6.56/205. He faced his buddy, Tom McEwen, and the "Mongoose" smoked his tires in the semifinals while Don ran 6.41/229. Prudhomme raced another old friend in the final," TV Tommy" Ivo. Unfortunately for Ivo, his car broke in the final, and Don soloed for the win with a 6.36/234.98. He looked well on his way to win a third major race at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Championships. Only one driver had out-qualified Prudhomme at the first two events, and he did it again at Beeline. Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow, qualified #1 at every race, and he did so again; his 6.23/232 got the pole while Don's 6.24/239.36 (Top Speed) followed close behind. These two would work their way into the final. Don ran 6.48, 6.56, and 6.86. Tripp had the edge, and both overpowered the track in the final, but Shumake recovered first with his 6.75/218, picking up the victory over Prudhomme's shut-off 8.91/114.00. Gainesville was the next stop on the calendar, and this time Don qualified #1 with a 6.23 (Low ET) at 238.09. A 6.52/221.13 beat Tom Anderson's 6.81/202 in the first round, followed by a 6.42/232.55 that topped Gary Burgin's 6.71/201. But a funny thing happened in the semifinal, the "Snake" got beat! Eventual winner Dale Pulde ran 6.37/236 to put Don's 6.54/212.76 on the trailer. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/239.36 in qualifying #1 for the Bakersfield March Meet. In round one, he ran 6.13/234.98 to stop Jake Johnston's 6.66, but in the second round, a quick-leaving McCulloch stole a 6.09/231 to 6.07/234.37 win from the "Snake." Don skipped racing the NHRA Division Seven race held at Fremont on April 2 to go to Long Beach and race at a celebrity road race. He finished third in the 20-mile race behind Gordon Johncock and Dan Gurney. He then went to Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. His 6.30/228.4 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.19 in the first two rounds of eliminations before really getting on it and running Low ET and Top Speed in the final at 6.11/238.09 to beat McEwen's 6.18/217 for the victory. The following week (May 13), he won the NHRA Division Seven race at OCIR. He qualified #1 with a 6.08/240.64. An opening round 6.04/240.64 beat Shumake's 6.38/231. Don set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.00/242.58 that took out Dave Hough's 6.35/230 in the "Super Shops" car. A final round 6.04/242.58 (Top Speed) beat Henry Harrison's 6.37/229 for the title. | At the Seattle National Open, Prudhomme ran an experimental, after dark 6.56. - Joe Moore

Notes: Lee qualified #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with an 8.81/154.10, but unfortunately for him, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bob Glidden. Hunter improved slightly to an 8.770 at 153, but he lost to eventual winner Glidden's 8.56 (Low ET) shot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, an 8.780/155.17 qualified the car in the #14 spot. In the first round, he faced the lone AMC car in the program, the Hornet of Wally Booth, and an 8.85/154 lost to Booth's 8.79/156. Lee ran well at the rain-delayed Bakersfield March Meet. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.86 advanced when his opponent, Ray Cunningham, fouled. Tom Chelbana fouled against him in round two, so Hunter's 8.85/153.06 moved into the semifinals. There he faced Sonny Bryant. Sonny's big-block Camaro had been running 8.6's on every pass, so he knew that he was tough to beat. Hunter picked up over a tenth in their race, but it still wasn't enough as his 8.74/154.63 lost to Bryant's 8.63/155. On April 2, he scored a victory at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. Hunter qualified #4 in the eight-car field with an 8.72/153.06. Another 8.72 at 152.80 beat Chelbana's 8.84/153 in round one. A semifinal 8.71/154.37 beat Mark Yuill's 8.75. He faced Bryant in the final, and this time, he got some revenge from his loss to him at Bakersfield. Both ran 8.75, but the "win" light came on in Lee's lane. After winning at Fremont, it was surprising to see Lee's name among the non-qualifiers for the next NHRA Division Seven race held at OCIR. Hunter was at Sacramento on June 18 for the third NHRA Division Seven race. His 8.71/154.11 qualified #6, but he fouled away an 8.85/151.01 in the opening round against eventual winner Sonny Bryant who advanced at 8.61/156. The next NHRA Division Seven race was run at Bonneville Raceway early in July. Lee ran 9.20/144.24 to beat Dale Falk in the opening round. In the semifinal, his 9.17/146.35 fell to Kevin Rotty's 9.11/148. Lee was the first alternate at NHRA Indy at 8.800/154.90 and at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a best of 8.852/153.58.

Notes: Jim was at Orlando, Florida, on June 18 for the third NHRA Division Two race. Unfortunately, in round one, his troubled 10.01 lost to Charlie Peppers' 9.18. He debuted a new Duster at Suffolk on July 9 and won the fourth NHRA Division Two race. The car was consistent, running 8.84/152.80 in round one, to beat Carl Hobson's 9.05/149 and another 8.84 at 153.84 to defeat Richie Zul's quicker 8.75/155. He faced Dempsey Hardy in the final, and his 8.91/152.80 won when Hardy fouled. Kinnett qualified #13 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 8.71/154.37 lost to Richie Zul's 8.70/155 in a very close race in the opening round of eliminations. Jim was at Miami-Hollywood on July 30 for the final NHRA Division Two race. He ran 8.92/154.90 (Top Speed) in the opening round before his 8.95/154.30 lost to Bob Glidden's new Fairmont at 8.71/153. Shortly after that (August 13), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 8.82 was the fastest Mopar, qualifying #6. But he hurt the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, he had one of three Mopars that made the field. His 8.77/154.90 got him the #14 spot in the show. In the first round, his 8.78/154.77 lost to Lee Shepherd's 8.67/153. The following week (September 9), he was at Cumberland International Raceway for the NHRA Country Boy Open. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 8.82/151.57 beat Art Gravatt's 9.32/145. He did not receive an ET in the semifinal, but his speed was 151.77 while defeating Sam Carroll's 9.34/121. He went up against Wally Booth's AMC in the final, and the two had a good race that saw the Hornet's 8.84/152 get the victory over the Duster's 8.89/154.90 (Top Speed). He did not race at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. Jim scored a big win near the end of the year (November 19) at the Turkey Trot Nationals in his new Volare. Former Fun City Flyer, former Arlen Vanke car. We also have 8.63/155.70 times for this car at match race weight. Best NHRA National Event times were 8.710 at the Summers and 154.90 at Indy.

Notes: This was one of the last pro stock cars that began life as a genuine factory-built car. Kevin Rotty started his season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Sonny Bryant. Rotty easily won his first race over Don Campanello, but he had a tough semifinal race against Larry Lombardo driving Bill Jenkins' Monza. Rotty won the race with an 8.99/150.50 edging Larry's 9.01/146. He then faced low qualifier Bryant in the final. Kevin improved to 8.91/151.51 to get the victory over Sonny's 9.00/152. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #5 with an 8.74/156. In the opening round, opponent Jean Batteux fouled and he advanced with a 9.27/129. But in round two, his troubled 9.54/123 lost to eventual winner Bob Glidden's 8.67/153. A week later, he was at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Championships. He qualified #2 behind Warren Johnson and the two would both make their way to the final where Rotty's 8.90 finished runner-up to Johnson's 8.74. He really ran well in qualifying at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There his 8.607/159.29 qualified #3, but his brakes failed in the first round, and he rolled through the lights and fouled. In April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field and his 8.76 (third alternate) failed to qualify. He still had Top Speed for the Pro Stock cars. He then won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR by beating Bryant in the final. A strong 8.68/157.06 qualified #2 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but an opening round 8.83/155.70 fell to Joe Satmary's quick-leaving 8.84/154. The following week (June 18), he was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with an 8.59/157.07. Randy Humphrey fouled against him in the first round, and Kevin advanced with an 8.70/153.85. In the semifinal, his 8.69/154.11 lost to Mark Yuill's 8.67/155. Early in July, he went to Bonneville Raceway for the fourth NHRA Division Seven race. In the opening round, his 9.07/148.77 beat Gordie Rivera. In the semifinal, Kevin's 9.11/148.52 defeated Lee Hunter's 9.17/146. He faced Sonny Bryant in the final and Bryant had been running about a half tenth quicker throughout the race. Rotty gambled on the tree and fouled away a 9.07/149.01 while Sonny ran 9.01/146 for the victory. Kevin ran 8.59/157.07 at NHRA Division 7 Sacramento, but lost to Mark Yuill on a holeshot in the final, 8.69 to Kevin's 8.67. The Gainesville numbers were Kevin's best national event times of the year.

Allen qualified #1 at the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Mich., with a 5.94. A first-round 6.01/209.79 beat LaHaie's 6.20/211. In the second round, he and Bill Pryor ran 6.04 (Jeb at 239.36), but Pryor won. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The same thing happened at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals, where he again failed to make the show. He ran well at Indy for the US Nationals, where he lasted until the semifinals. Ran best of 5.99/233 in eliminations at Indy 1978 after a 5.89/238.09 qualifier. Runner up to Don Garlits.

Notes: Lost in round one, at Indy 1978 with a 6.20/220. | Baca failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, running 6.109/236.22 for the 4th alternate slot. But he turned around and won the Bakersfield March Meet. Baca qualified #5 with a 5.97 in the 32 car field. He lost a blower belt in the final and slowed to a 7.14/130.43 but still held off Graham Light, who smoked the tires and lost. On April 2, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. His 6.11 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.29 lost to John Kimble's 6.13. He took another win at the NHRA Division 7 points race at OCIR. He didn't look too strong in qualifying as he only qualified #12. But a first-round 6.06/217.91 beat Larry Sutton followed by a 6.00/212.76 that beat Jim Murphy in round two. He won a major battle in the semifinals where Baca ran 6.03/215.82 to beat James Warren's 6.21/187. He soloed for the victory when Gary Beck was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Baca still ran 6.06/233.16 on the solo pass. Dennis qualified #14 at Indy with a 6.092/236.22, equalling his Pomona Speed. He lost to Gary Beck in round one, 6.09/233 to 6.20/220. Dennis finished as the second alternate at the Ontario World Finals (times not available).

Notes: Gary qualified at Pomona Winters at 5.976/242.58. We need to confirm that this is the car that ran at the Summers (247) and not the silver car. Beck started his '78 season by running a 6.26 to qualify #3 at the AHRA Winternationals. Against Jim Plummer, the car got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round. He then traveled to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the abovementioned times qualified Gary #7 in the field. A first-round 6.18/221 lost to Dick LaHaie's 6.09/230. Great 5.855 ET at Columbus and 247.25 at Englishtown, but Gary dominated Ontario before breaking in the final. He ran amazing 5.763/250.00 numbers there in qualifying. We are listing these times here, but they may apply to the other 1978 entry for Gary. That shows blank times for now, but adjust when we get confirmation of which car ran which event. Gary became the 5th member of the NHRA 250 MPH club with that pass.

Notes: NHRA Champ 1978. Ran 5.93/240 in eliminations at Indy 1978. Qualified number two at Pomona 78 at 5.871/238.72. Kelly Brown was in the right place at the right time in '78. He was driving Jim Brissette's Donovan-powered car, and the Donovan engine was making a comeback. At the NHRA Winternationals, the top three qualifiers were running Donovans, and Kelly's one-shot qualifier of 5.87/238.72 put him in the #2 spot behind Don Garlits' 5.77. Brown's opening round effort of 5.94/235 beat Jeb Allen's 6.06/236 and a 6.06/239 in round two-beat Shirley Muldowney's 6.13/236. He picked up to 5.88/237 in the semifinals to turn back Rick Ramsey's 6.25/219. His final round opposition was unheralded Gordon Fabeck. Kelly scored the victory with a 6.12/226 over Fabeck's 6.48/217. At Bakersfield's last 32 car Top Fuel field, Kelly's 6.10 qualified #15. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Once again, he and Garlits took the top two spots in qualifying. This time Brown's 6.00 (Low ET) at 235.60 led the field. These two would work their way into the final. In the first round, Kelly ran another 6.00/240 to take out Dick LaHaie's 6.30/221. Yet another 6.00/224 in round two beat Richard Tharp's tire-smoking 7.41 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He slowed (?) to a 6.06/238 in a thumping of Marvin Graham's 6.32/236 in the semifinals, and he looked like a sure bet to get his second NHRA win in a row. Garlits had only run a best of 6.16 in eliminations. However, bad luck set in as Brown lost a motor just off the line, and he had to watch as Garlits smoked the tires to 6.55 for the victory. Brown didn't have to wait long before winning again. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals in April, he beat Mike Tarter in the final with a 6.11/235.68 over Mike's 6.28/234. Earlier, he almost matched Tharp's 6.04 Low ET of the meet with a 6.05 run in the semifinals over Johnny Abbott. On May 7, he won the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Seattle. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #2 in the eight-car field. He beat Rob Bruins in round one, with a 6.03/232.55 to Rob's 6.06/236. In the semifinals, his 5.93/236.84 (Low ET) beat Fabeck's 6.03/240, and in the final, his holeshot 6.26/211.76 beat Graham Light's quicker 6.15/238. The following week, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. He was late in arriving after towing from his win in Seattle. The team was lacking parts for their Donovan, and they were forced to make things do. After they showed up, Kelly cracked off a 5.97/236.22 to qualify low for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, the car lost fire on the line, and after he got it restarted, he had to run without the benefit of a burnout. He beat Stan Shiroma's 6.39/216 in with a 6.21/200.00. In round two, the same thing happened; he lost fire, restarted it, and ran without the burnout. This time his 6.39/179.64 lost to Rick Ramsey's 6.01/230. His winning ways continued at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. But his transporter let him down on the way to National Trail, and he got there just before tech closed. After two failed attempts to qualify, a last-ditch effort of 5.96/236.84 qualified him #5 in the show. After that, it was smooth sailing. A 6.10/233.76 beat Muldowney's 6.15/238 and a 6.12/233.16 in round two beat Light's 6.34/206. A consistent 6.11/234.37 in the semifinals turned back Tharp's 6.14/241 and put him into the final against Frank Bradley. The two had a great race, but Brown showed that he could cut a light as his 6.09/238.72 beat Frank's 6.05/238 for his third NHRA National event win of '78. Things did not go so well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He only qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.15, and he lost to Paul Longenecker in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he scored yet another win. It was an eight-car show, and seventeen cars attempted to qualify. Brown was on the "bump" with his 6.01. But during eliminations, he picked up. A first-round 5.91/233.16 beat Garlits' 6.16/222, and a semifinal 5.97/230.17 stopped Light's 6.19/225. He faced Abbott in the final, and an off-pace 6.31/220.58 was enough to win Abbott's equally troubled 6.40/213. Before the NHRA US Nationals, Kelly went to the Car Craft Magazine Awards show, awarded "Person of the Year." Did Kelly run 5.809 somewhere this year? We formerly listed that, but he did not run it in NHRA competition.

Notes: Tom started the season at Tucson, Arizona, for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify there, too (times unavailable). Bret Kepner crewed for the team some.
