Notes: Darrell started the 1966 season in an injected fuel Fairlane. Then built this Mustang, first running it on injection with fuel, then blown alky, finally blown fuel. These times are blown fuel. In June, this car debuted at the NHRA Springnationals; it ran as a CC/FD. At the US Nationals in '66, Darrell ran 8.88/161 and an 8.77. On only the car's second outing, Droke ran a best of three match against Bob Sullivan at Detroit on April 17. He won the match running a best speed of 137. Darrell ran another best two out of three against Bobby Wood at Biloxi on May 14. The blown Mustang won the first race with a 9.30/140.34, but Droke fouled in the second race. In the final race for the match race win, Darrell's 8.99/149.50 beat Wood's Chevelle. He ran Arnie Beswick in a best of three at Cordova on June 25. Unfortunately, he lost two straight. In the first race, his 9.00/151.51 lost to Arnie's 8.90/160 while he fouled in the second race, and to add insult to injury, he also lost a blower belt. On August 7, Droke was at Bluegrass for a best of three match race against Walt Stevens, driving the "Piranha." Only one race between the two was run as Walt fouled, and Droke's 9.02/153.06 won, but a rod let go and damaged the engine. 8.65 at Wichita 66 (6/17/66 Drag News) | 161.29 MPH at Wichita 66 (6/17/66 Drag News). Blown fuel-113" AWB, glass body, 427 Cammer, C-6 trans combo in a rectangular-tube frame by Holman & Moody. |

Notes: Injected fuel AWB here, also ran car on gas. Both Mortimer and Koffel drove. Car was first run in 1965, and sold in 1967. This became the Mid Park Plymouth in 1967, and eventually was run by Dick Duecker as late as 1970 at least. AKA Flintstone Flyer. Atco NJ 1966 (7/01/66 Drag News) |
